Abstract:In this study, a mathematical model for the laminar falling film is presented in order to simulate the evaporation heat transfer characteristics in falling liquid oxygen films. The model takes into account the effect of the interfacial shear. The values of the film thickness, the heat transfer coefficient as well as the interfacial shear are obtained under given conditions by solving the model with an iteration method. The influences of the inlet Reynolds number, channel length and the interfacial shear on the flow and heat transfer characteristics of the falling film evaporation are analyzed in detail. Effects of key factors on the circulation ratio of the inlet fluid mass flow rate to the generated vapor mass flow rate, an important design parameter for reboilers/condensers, are particularly analyzed. In addition, the variations of the average vapor velocity and interfacial film velocity are also discussed. The analysis results could provide theoretical guidance for the simulation and design of downflow reboilers/condensers applied in air separation units.

Abstract:Abstract The vertical tube falling film evaporation experimental platform was built, and the falling film evaporation heat transfer experiment was carried out. Comparative study was carried out between two types of enhanced heat transfer tubes, which are converging-diverging tube and the transversally corrugated tube, to explore their heat transfer characteristics of falling film evaporation. The results show that the falling film evaporative heat transfer coefficient of the two tubes increases with the increase of the unit peripheral flow rate, the heat transfer temperature difference, heat flux and the Reynolds number of the flash steam. The falling film evaporation heat transfer coefficient of the converging-diverging tube is about 1.09 times that of the transversally corrugated tube. According to the experimental data, the falling film evaporation heat transfer correlations of these two types of tubes were obtained. These results provide a useful reference for the using of transversally corrugated tube and converging-diverging tube in vertical falling film evaporator.

Abstract:The heat transfer in evaporating falling film of fatty acids in the vertical tube was investigated. The principle effects such as feed flow, heat flux, operating pressure on the heat transfer were analyzed. The experimental results showed that the heat transfer coefficient of falling film evaporation decreased as the feed flow increased during laminar flow, and the increase of heat flux and operating pressure was favorable for the heat transfer coefficient. The practical formula for the heat transfer coeffcient of falling film evaporation in the vertical tube is represented as h*=4.107Re-0.947 7.

Abstract:The falling film flow has attracted much attention recently due to its advantages of low temperature difference, low flow rate, high heat transfer coefficient and high heat flux density. In this paper, a series of experiments were carried out to investigate the falling film flow and heat transfer characteristics outside the vertical tube based on the established experimental system. Flow patterns, the trend of heat transfer coefficients along the tube as well as the falling film breakdown phenomenon were described. Two new correlations were obtained to predict the heat transfer coefficient and falling film dry burning based on experimental data, and the maximum deviation between the experimental data and predicted values were −13.36% and 16.81%, respectively. The new correlations can provide a reference for the design of the heater in the Mechanical vapor recompression systems.

Abstract:As an efficient and energy-saving heat exchange technology, horizontal tube falling film evaporation has a great application prospect in refrigeration and air conditioning. The three-dimensional models of falling film flow evaporation outside horizontal single tube and inside evaporator were established, and the accuracy of flow and heat transfer simulation process was verified by comparison. For horizontal single tube, the results showed that total heat transfer coefficient was low and increased with larger spray density and evaporation temperature. The thickness of liquid film outside tube decreased gradually with the increase of tube diameter, and the total heat transfer coefficient of small tube diameter was significantly greater than that of the large tube diameter. The total heat transfer coefficient presented an increasing trend with larger liquid distribution height and density. In addition, the fluctuation of tube axial liquid film thickness distribution decreased with larger liquid distribution density. For evaporator, the results indicated that part of liquid refrigerant was carried into the vapor outlet. The temperature of tube wall and fluid presented a gradually rising trend in vertical downward direction, while tube wall temperature within the same horizontal and transverse row had little difference. The high-temperature zone on the outer wall of heat exchange tube moved towards the inlet and gradually decreased, and the outlet temperature of water in the tube also gradually decreased with the increase of refrigerant spray density. The local heat transfer coefficient of heat exchanger tube in the vertical direction presented a downward trend which was more obvious with the smaller spray density and it was obviously higher located in the middle of upper tube row and both sides of lower tube row for horizontal tube rows.

Abstract:Falling film evaporators are commonly employed in a wide range of industrial applications, with a particular emphasis on the management of vapor generated during operations. It is widely recognized that vapor streams have a significant influence on falling film flow and heat transfer. In this paper, we conducted numerical investigations of this issue in the presence of vertical vapor streams and validated the present numerical results against previous experimental data. The results indicate that the length of the liquid tongues and the interaction time between two liquid films are affected by both downward and upward vapor streams. The effect of vertical vapor on the film thickness is dependent on the vapor's orientation and position on the tube. Typically, is decreased by 25 % at z * = 0 and v g = 4.0 ms −1 and is increased by 20 % at z * = 0 and v g = 4.0 ms −1 . The downward vapor enhances heat transfer on the top half of the tube's periphery while weakening it on the bottom half, while the upward vapor contributes to heat transfer enhancement mainly in the detachment zone. Overall, the vertical vapor stream causes substantial redistributions of the heat transfer coefficient, velocity vector, and liquid film thickness in three distinct zones. Downward and upward vapor streams predominantly impact the upper and lower parts of the tube, respectively. Within the current velocity range, it is evident that vertical vapor streams consistently lead to an average enhancement in heat transfer.

Abstract:Evaporative cooling equipment has advantages of energy and water conservation and compact structure, is widely used in various industrial sectors. To better characterize the heat transfer capacity of the evaporative cooling process, the falling-film evaporation heat transfer process outside horizontally closed arranged tubes (horizontal tubes plate) was analyzed. A theoretical model was established to divide the total heat transferred by the tube wall into two parts: the convective heat transfer of the air and that of the liquid film. The latter was divided into three parts: the heat transferred by the convective heat transfer between the liquid film and the air, the mass and latent heat transfer between the liquid film and the air, and the heat absorbed by the rise in temperature of the liquid film. Experiments were performed with both smooth and ribbed tubes. Correlations of the heat transfer coefficients between the tube wall surface and the air and between the tube wall surface and the liquid film and the coverage rate of the liquid film were obtained. The experimental results indicated that using ribbed tubes effectively enhanced the liquid film coverage on the tubes, resulting in a maximum reinforcement of 122.73% compared with that of smooth tubes. Moreover, the experimental results verified the correlation equations, with the deviation between the calculated and experimental results was within ±10%.

Abstract:Numerical simulations based on the MARS (Multi-interface Advection and Reconstruction Solver) developed by one of the authors have been performed in order to understand the heat transfer mechanism of falling film flows along a vertical wall. In the present study, we focused on an internal structure, i.e. velocity profile and heat transfer. In this study, the velocity profiles in a failing film are categorized into three regions: substrate film region, solitary wave region, and capillary wave region with each characteristic. Moreover, small vortices can be found in the capillary wave region. Additionally, numerical results indicate that heat transfer mechanism is different for these three regions. We proposed new heat transfer evaluation manner as a function of the Prandtl number for these regions. This manner could contribute to a design work of failing film flow device.
Falling Water Film Evaporation on Horizontal Finned Tube Arrays at Low Pressure

Abstract:Experimental studies have been done on falling film evaporation of water on four types of finned tubes arrays at the pressure of 1000 Pa. The Reynolds numbers are in the laminar range of about 10 to 110. Results show that the finned tubes that can distribute liquid longitudinally have the best performances in the partial dryout regime, and those with high fins could enhance heat transfer most in the fully wet regime. High heat fluxes will make more liquid evaporate, but also generate more dry patches on the tubes. Additionally, the inner enhancement of the tubes will also improve the overall heat transfer coefficients. And four heat transfer enhancement methods of falling film evaporation are summarized in the paper.

Abstract:A falling film heat transfer test facility has been built for the measurement of falling film evaporation in a vacuum of about 1000 Pa. At this condition, only convective evaporation occurred in the liquid film. The Reynolds numbers of falling film over a range from 21.6 to 108.1 were tested on six-tube arrays made of enhanced or smooth tubes. Results show that the tubes with both enhanced outer and inner surfaces give high heat flux. Besides, as the Reynolds number increases, the heat transfer enhancement ratio of falling film evaporation decreases. A semi-analytical correlation is established to predict the heat transfer coefficients of falling film evaporation on smooth tube arrays, considering the contributions of partially dryout and fully wet regimes, respectively. For enhanced tubes, the heat transfer enhancement ratios to the smooth tubes were also correlated.
Falling Film Evaporation Of Water On Horizontal Configured Tube Bundles

Abstract:This paper reports an experimental study on falling film evaporation of water on 6-row horizontal configured tube bundles in a vacuum. Three types of configured tubes, Turbo-CAB- 19fpi and -26fpi, Korodense, including smooth tubes for reference, were tested in a range of film Reynolds number from about 10 to 110. Results show that as the falling film Reynolds number increases, falling film evaporation goes from tubes partial dryout regime to fully wet regime; the mean heat transfer coefficients reach peak values in the transition point. Turbo-CAB tubes have the best heat transfer enhancement of falling film evaporation in both regimes, but Korodense tubes' overall performances are better when tubes are fully wet. The inlet temperature of heating water has hardly any effects on the heat transfer, but the evaporation pressure has controversial effects. A correlation with errors within 10% was also developed to predict the heat transfer enhancement capacity.

Abstract:The velocity characteristics of falling film on horizontal tube affect the heat transfer efficiency. To date, experimental studies on velocity distribution of liquid film on tube surface are very scarce. In this paper, the mean velocity of liquid film is measured using particle tracking velocimetry (PTV). A simulation is also conducted to investigate the flow characteristics of falling film. Results show that the spreading of liquid film undergoes two stages: circular spreading and circumferential flow. In circumferential direction, the liquid film tangential velocity shows different law in planes of L * = 0–0.3 and L * = 0.4/0.5. The tangential velocity decreases and then increases as axial distance increases. Simulation results agree well with the experimental results within experimental angle range. The liquid film axial velocity is always zero at L * = 0. When L * = 0.1–0.5, the axial velocity decreases as circumferential angle increases and gradually tends toward zero.

Abstract:Three-dimensional heat transfer during falling film evaporation was numerically investigated with spray densities varying from 0.0183 kg/(m⋅s) to 0.17 kg/(m⋅s). The flow characteristics and the heat transfer coefficient distribution were investigated for droplet flow, column flow and sheet flow over the tube. The simulations agree well with previous experimental data. The heat transfer coefficient with droplet flow is improved by each droplet impact and the resulting saddle-shaped waves. At lower spray densities, dryout patches appear that reduce the heat transfer until parts of the dryout patches are rewet. The local heat transfer coefficients for column flows have non-uniform three-dimensional distributions with the smallest heat transfer coefficients at φ = 165 ∼ 180° for l *=0 or 1. For sheet flows, the local heat transfer coefficient first decreases and then increases with increasing circumferential angle, while it varies only a small amount in the axial direction.

Abstract:Porous surfaces often exhibit exceptional performance in liquid spreading and heat transfer, making them promising candidates for enhancing falling film heat transfer on solid surfaces. This paper delves into the flow and heat transfer characteristics occurring within falling films on horizontal tubes coated with a porous layer. To achieve this, a three-dimensional numerical model that couples the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method with porous media considerations was employed. The investigation comprehensively covers film spreading behavior, flow patterns, film velocity, film thickness, temperature distribution, and heat transfer coefficients, for both plain and porous tubes. Furthermore, we delve into the effects of key parameters, such as porosity, layer thickness, and material properties, on the overall heat transfer process. The results demonstrate the accuracy of our model in reproducing film thickness and heat transfer coefficients within falling films on horizontal porous tubes. When comparing plain tubes to porous ones, some key differences emerge. Specifically, the liquid film on porous tubes spreads more slowly, leading to increased film thickness and fewer occurrences of dry patches. Additionally, porous tubes result in lower film velocity and a more uniform temperature field compared to plain tubes. Interestingly, the findings reveal that smaller porosities yield thicker films and higher heat transfer coefficients, particularly when the porosity is below 0.4. Moreover, thicker porous layers result in thinner films, higher wetting ratios, and increased heat transfer coefficients. Among the materials we tested, aluminum and copper porous layers exhibit the highest heat transfer performance, while steel demonstrates the lowest.

Abstract:In order to design the vertical falling film evaporators applied in the sewage source heat pump systems, a numerical study employing the VOF (Volume of Fluid) method has been carried out to determine the thickness and the wave behavior of falling liquid film outside a vertical tube. The effects of the annular gap, tube diameter, tube length, spray density, viscosity and surface tension are discussed. The simulation results demonstrate that spray density and the fluid viscosity are the two most influential factors affecting the film thickness. Besides, when spray density is larger than 0.100 kg/(m∙s), the film thickness decreases slightly with the increase of the flow distance. So the influence of tube length on film thickness cannot be ignored and it also should be considered in the film thickness prediction model. On the other hand, the tube diameter and the surface tension have little effect on the film thickness. It mainly have a significant impact on the wave amplitude of the liquid film at low flowrate. Besides, the annular gap provides a limited effect on the outlet section of the falling film. On the basis of the simulation results, a new correlation incorporating the tube length is developed to effectively predict the falling film thickness. Compared with the experimental data, it is found that the prediction accuracy of the correlation can be controlled within ±15%. The present research provides a theoretical basis for designing falling film evaporators.

Abstract:The heat and mass transfer process of the laminar falling liquid film along a vertical heated plate with constant heat flux is studied. Through thermal equilibrium analysis, the energy conservation equation is established and solved by the parametric variation method. The analytical solution considering evaporation is in good agreement with the experimental results. Based on the model, the temperature distribution of liquid film with or without evaporation is obtained. It is demonstrated that the thickness and average temperature of liquid film show decreasing and increasing trends linearly in the flow direction. Along with the increase in the evaporation rate, the average temperature decreases and the share of evaporative heat dissipation in the total heat flux increases, which demonstrates that evaporation is an important physical factor for heat dissipation when the falling liquid film flows on a hot plate.

Heat Transfer and Fouling Performance During Falling Film Evaporation in Vertical Porous Tubes

Abstract:An experimental investigation was conducted on falling film evaporation along two porous tubes, which were sintered by stainless-steel powder with a diameter of 0.45 and 1 um, respectively. The test section is a 2 m long sintered tube with an outer diameter of 25 mm and a wall thickness of 2 mm. During the experiment, the pressure inside the tube was maintained at 1 atm, the inlet temperature was 373 K, and mass flux ranged from 0.51 to 1.36 kg/ (m s). Conditions of the steam outside the pipe, which was the heat source, were fixed, while the fouling tests were carried out at a constant mass flow of 0.74 kg/ (m s) using high-concentration brine as work fluid. The overall heat transfer coefficient under different working conditions was tested and compared with the stainless steel smooth tube of the same dimensions. The heat transfer coefficient of the two porous stainless tubes are about 35% and 20% lower than that of the smooth one, showing an inferior effect because the steam in the pores of the pipe wall during the infiltration process will reduce the heat conductivity. The heat transfer coefficient of the smooth tube deteriorated severely due to the deposition of calcium carbonate, which had little effect on the sintered tubes. Besides, the fouling weight of porous tubes is 2.01 g and 0 g compared with 5.52 g of the smooth tube.

Abstract:Column flow is the most widely used flow pattern in horizontal-tube falling-film evaporators. Ideally, the liquid column is in the center plane of horizontal tube. In the actual falling-film evaporator, the installation deviation of nozzles, the steam sweep, as well as the disturbance caused by flash evaporation make the liquid column deviate from the center plane. The heat transfer characteristics of deviated columnar flow and its influencing factors were experimentally studied and analyzed in this paper. The results are as follows: The vertex of heat transfer coefficient curve shifts to the negative angle interval as the deviation distance increases. Meanwhile, the maximum value decreases with the increase of liquid column deviation distance. The heat transfer coefficients in the negative angle interval are greater than those at corresponding position in the positive angle interval. The heat transfer coefficients increase with the increase of evaporation temperature, spray density, and tube spacing, respectively.

Abstract:The Kelvin–Helmholtz instability of phase-change interface during flow film condensation in vertical mini-diameter tube was studied here by means of energy analysis. According to the interfacial boundary conditions, the film thinning effect and the phase-change area enlarging effect by interfacial waves on heat transfer enhancement were analyzed for flow condensation in tubes with different diameter. It is indicated that, in mini-diameter tube, more obvious heat transfer enhancement due to interfacial waves can be expected than that in normal-sized tube, and the interfacial waves enhance the heat transfer mainly by film thinning effect.

Abstract:The Kelvin–Helmholtz instability of evaporating thin falling film flow in vertical tube is studied by method of energy analysis. Based on the rules that the interfacial capillary waves come from the balance of works done by inertial force, surface tension on phase-change interface, and also capillary force on tube wall, the stability behaviors of falling film with different Reynolds number and different perturbation wavelength are explored in detail. The analysis indicates that the main reason of film breakup by increasing tube wall heat flux is that, the stability effect of capillary adsorbability on tube wall is weakened as surface tension waving is enhanced by improving tube wall temperature.
