Abstract:Green phosphor of (Lu1–xTbx)3Ga5O12 was synthesized via high temperature solid state reaction in a reducing atmosphere. The crystal structure, luminescent properties and the influence of Tb3+ on the performance of the phosphor were investigated. The X-ray diffraction patterns show that the phosphor is a pure garnet phase, and the size of the crystal cell increases with Tb3+ content (i.e., x). In the excitation spectra, there are two 4f 8→4f 7 5d1 broad bands centered at 267 nm and 306 nm and weak 4f 8→4f 8 transition lines located in the region of 330–380 nm and at 487 nm. The two 4f 8→4f 7 5d1 broad bands shift to a longer wavelength and their wavelength interval decreases with the quantity of Tb3+. Under UV light, the phosphor has the Tb3+ characteristic emission corresponding to 5D4→7FJ and 5D3→7FJ typical transitions of Tb3+, respectively, with the most intensive emission at 543 nm assigned to 5D4→7F5 transitions. The concentration quench of 5D4→7FJ transitions occurs when x is beyond 0.08 due to the exchange interaction. Compared to 5D4→7FJ transitions, the quenching concentration of 5D3→7FJ transition emission is lower. The mechanism of the concentration quenching is the cross-relaxation, which is mainly realized through the dipole–dipole interaction between Tb3+ions.
