Abstract:The Giuffre-Menegotto-Pinto constitutive model of reinforcement (MP model) will develop an unrealistic sudden change of the strain and stiffness, and overestimate the stress under a circumstance of reloading subsequent to a small-amplitude unloading history. The definition of the elastic range radius and the reassignment of reversal points were proposed to overcome the defect of MP model. The criterion of small strain vibration was determined and divided into two different cases based on the radius of elastic range. A nonlinear analysis program of the reinforced concrete structure was developed based on the fiber beam element, in which the modified MP model and the Mander concrete model were included. The accuracy and applicability of the improved method were verified by both the analysis of steel bar’s hysteresis characteristic under small strain vibration and the simulation of the load-displacement curve for a pier through pseudo-static test. Results show that the stress-strain curve predicted by the modified MP model is more rational, and the overestimation of the horizontal bearing capacity and the stiffness of structures can be successfully avoided. The accuracy of hysteretic curve of reinforcement was significantly improved by the modified model in the reinforced concrete structural elasto-plastic analysis.

Abstract:An anisotropic elastic-damage coupled constitutive model for plain concrete is developed, which describes the concrete performance degradation. The damage variable, related to the surface density of micro-cracks and micro-voids, and represented by a second order tensor, is governed by the principal tension strain components. For adequately describing the partial crack opening closure effect under tension and compression for concrete, a new suitable thermodynamic potential is proposed to express the state equations for modeling the mechanical behaviors. Within the framework of thermodynamic potential, concrete strain mechanisms are identified in the proposed anisotropic damage model while each state variable is physically explained and justified. The strain equivalence hypothesis is used for deriving the constitutive equations, which leads to the development of a decoupled algorithm for effective stress computation and damage evolution. Additionally, a detailed numerical algorithm is described and the simulations are shown for uni-axial compression, tension and multi-axial loadings. For verifying the numerical results, a series of experiments on concrete were carried out. Reasonably good agreement between experimental results and the predicted values was observed. The proposed constitutive model can be used to accurately model the concrete behaviors under uni-axial compression, tension and multiaxial loadings. Additionally, the presented work is expected to be very useful in the nonlinear finite element analysis of large-scale concrete structures.

Abstract:As a kind of elastic-plastic medium, it is very difficult to describe cement-stabilized soil by usual elastic-plastic models. A series of damage relationship curves obtained from the damage experiments of cement stabilized soil are analyzed. The constitutive relationships of elastic damage and plastic damage are established, respectively. The elastic-plastic damage model of cement-stabilized soil is established. Through the comparison with the experimental results, the elastic-plastic damage model of cement-stabilized soil is verified.

Abstract:The ultra-low cycle fatigue (ULCF) fracture initiation caused by cyclic large plastic strain in structural steels is often the governing limit state in steel structures when subjected to strong earthquake actions. Based on the author’s previous work, this paper presents the improved cyclic void growth model (CVGM) and degraded significant plastic strain (DSPS) model considering the dependence of cyclic damage degradation parameters on stress triaxiality. To this end, tests on circular notched specimens and coupon specimens made of Q345qC steel were conducted, and scanning electron microscopy studies were performed on fracture surfaces of specimens, analysis results of which show that the ULCF fracture of Q345qC steel exhibits the typical behaviour of “void nucleation, growth, and coalescence.” The cyclic damage degradation parameters of CVGM and DSPS model were calibrated at different stress triaxialities based on experimental results of specimens and complementary finite element analysis, and empirical formulas were subsequently established between cyclic damage degradation parameters and stress triaxiality. Finally, detailed finite element analysis results demonstrate that the improved CVGM and DSPS model can predict ULCF fracture behaviour with higher accuracy in comparison with original models.

Abstract:A novel elastoplastic damage model describing the complex mechanical behaviors such as stiffness degradation and irreversible deformation of concrete under cyclic loading is constructed and the complete procedure for numerical implementation is presented. To solve the key problems including multi-axial stress states, asymmetry in tension and compression and conversion between tension and compression under cyclic loading, a series of approaches are put forward. A scalar equivalent strain based on the Hsieh-Ting-Chen strength criterion in the framework of strain space is used to convert the complex multiaxial stress state to the simple uniaxial one. Correspondingly, the equivalent strain obtained by the characteristic strength curve addresses the asymmetry in tension and compression, so that the stress–strain relationship in both uniaxial tension and uniaxial compression can be represented by the same curve, and a single damage scalar is available to characterize both tensile damage and compressive damage. To overcome the difficulty of conversion between tension and compression owing to the non-negative equivalent strain, a net equivalent strain is defined to keep the curve proceeding in the first quadrant under reverse loading. Meanwhile, a nominal damage variable is proposed to ensure that the reloading curve can return to the original stress–strain envelope. A new framework of the model with a concise mathematical form has been numerically implemented and is independent of the selection of fundamental governing equations. Typical experimental tests involving three-point bending test, mixed-mode bending test, cyclic uniaxial test, and reciprocating loading test are used for verification. The results calculated by the proposed model are all in good agreement with the tests. As a result, the correctness and reliability of the novel model are demonstrated.

Abstract:A new plastic-damage model for concrete subjected to cyclic loading is developed using the concepts of fracture-energy-based damage and stiffness degradation in continuum damage mechanics. Two damage variables, one for tensile damage and the other for compressive damage, and a yield function with multiple-hardening variables are introduced to account for different damage states. The uniaxial strength functions are factored into two parts, corresponding to the effective stress and the degradation of elastic stiffness. The constitutive relations for elastoplastic responses are decoupled from the degradation damage response, which provides advantages in the numerical implementation. In the present model, the strength function for the effective stress is used to control the evolution of the yield surface, so that calibration with experimental results is convenient. A simple and thermodynamically consistent scalar degradation model is introduced to simulate the effect of damage on elastic stiffness and its recovery during crack opening and closing. The performance of the plastic-damage model is demonstrated with several numerical examples of simulating monotonically and cyclically loaded concrete specimens.

Abstract:Applying the theory of damage mechanics, supposing the numerical values between the ratio of unloading elastic modulus to the initial elastic modulus and the ratio of residual elastic strain energy after unloading to the total strain energy are equivalent, this paper presents a new damage constitutive model for concrete under uniaxial stress conditions. Thus the elastic modulus damage is combined with energy damage, and the numerical value of damage variable of concrete under uniaxial stress conditions is determined by numerical method. Based on the unified calculation method of stress-strain relationship of various strength of concrete under uniaxial stress conditions, through numerical integration and regression analysis, the evolvement law of damage and damage constitutive model for concrete under uniaxial stress conditions are proposed.The results show that the model can describe the response of concrete under uniaxial cyclic loading. It is indicated that the analysis results of the damage constitutive are in good agreement with the experiment ones. This work is a base for the further researches on the nonlinear element analysis of concrete structures under reversed cyclic loading. 2 tabs, 4 figs, 12 refs.

Abstract:A coupledplastic damage model with two damage scalars is proposed to describe the nonlinear features of concrete. The constitutive formulations are developed by assuming that damage can be represented effectively in the material compliance tensor. Damage evolution law and plastic damage coupling are described using the framework of irreversible thermodynamics. The plasticity part is developed without using the effective stress concept. A plastic yield function based on the true stress is adopted with two hardening functions, one for tensile loading history and the other for compressive loading history. To couple the damage to the plasticity, the damage parameters are introduced into the plastic yield function by considering a reduction of the plastic hardening rate. The specific reduction factor is then deduced from the compliance tensor of the damaged material. Finally, the proposed model is applied to plain concrete. Comparison between the experimental data and the numerical simulations shows that the proposed model is able to describe the main features of the mechanical performances observed in concrete material under uniaxial, biaxial, and cyclic loadings.

Abstract:The damage of concrete cover in reinforced concrete structures induced by reinforcing steel corrosion is investigated in this study. The damage process of the concrete cover can be divided into two distinct stages: the non-cracking stage and the partial cracking stage. An analytical model based on damage mechanics and elastic mechanics is developed to predict the concrete cracking due to steel corrosion. Based on this model, the expansive pressure and the radial loss of steel bar are discussed. Parametric studies are carried out to examine the effects of the correlative factors on the expansive pressure and the steel loss.

Abstract:A novel damage model for concrete has been developed, which can reflect the complex hysteresis phenomena of concrete under cyclic loading, as well as other nonlinear behaviors such as stress softening, stiffness degradation, and irreversible deformation. The model cleverly transforms the complex multiaxial stress state into a uniaxial state by equivalent strain, with few computational parameters and simple mathematical expression. The uniaxial tensile and compressive stress-strain curves matching the actual characteristics are used to accommodate the high asymmetry of concrete in tension and compression, respectively. Meanwhile, an unloading path and a reloading path that can reflect the hysteresis effect under cyclic loading of concrete are established, in which the adopted expressions for the loading and unloading characteristic points do not depend on the shape of the curve. The proposed model has a concise form that can be easily implemented and also shows strong generality and flexibility. Finally, the reliability and correctness of the model are verified by comparing the numerical results with the three-point bending beam test, cyclic loading test, and a seismic damage simulation of the Koyna gravity dam.
Application of Smeared Cracking and Damaged Plasticity Models in FEA of CFT

Abstract:This paper carries out finite element analyses (FEA) of the axial strengths of square and rectangular concrete filled steel tubular (CFT) stub columns with and with no binding bars by adopting two models respectively——smeared cracking and damaged plasticity, discusses the features of each model, and makes comparison between the results from FEA and the existed experiments. Comparison shows that both models are suitable for simulation of the axial strengths of CFT. And the axial strengths predicted by FEA using smeared cracking model with associated flow rule underestimating the dilation angle and confinement stress of core concrete are slightly lower than the experimental results. But damaged plasticity model with non-associated flow agrees better with the experimental results.

Abstract:In this paper a constitutive model based on an internal variable-formulation of plasticity theory for the non-linear analysis of concrete is presented. The model uses a new yield criterion which matches experimental data quite well and it accounts for both elastic and plastic stiffness degradations effects. Onset and amount of cracking can be studied by a simple postprocessing of the finite-element plasticity solution. The accuracy of the model is checked with some examples of application.

Abstract:The strength enhancement effect of rock and concrete under dynamic loading is one of the significant response characteristics differing from quasi-static loading. Typically, current dynamic constitutive models describe this phenomenon by adopting strain/stress rate dependent functions. In this study, a novel elastoplastic damage constitutive model that captures the dynamic strength increase through the equivalent stress history is developed by coupling the incubation characteristic time (ICT) criterion and the unified strength theory (UST). Specifically, the ICT criterion substitutes the stress history for the strain/stress rate to predict dynamic yield strength of rock and concrete. And the equivalent stress expressed by the UST provide an appropriate selection of the stress history in the ICT criterion under complex stress states. Furthermore, based on the non-associated plastic flow rule and the plastic-damage evolution law, combined with the equation of state, the proposed constitutive model is established and implemented numerically. The dynamic stress-strain curves of granite were reconstructed by a series of numerical tests on a single element, which verified the accuracy of the proposed constitutive model and the reliability of the numerical algorithm by comparing the experimental data. The proposed model was applied to the numerical simulation of dynamic compression-shear tests on inclined sandstone specimens loading by the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) and fragmentation experiments of single borehole granite specimens under blast loading, respectively. And the experimental dynamic crack patterns on the specimen surface captured by high-speed cameras match the simulated damage distribution well. In addition, several common concrete constitutive models and the proposed model were employed to simulate the dynamic response of reinforced concrete beams under near-field blast loading. The damage patterns and the mid-span residual displacement calculated numerically by the proposed model are more consistent with the experiments than other concrete models. As a conclusion, the proposed model, coupled the ICT criterion and the UST, provides a new perspective and paradigm for characterizing the responses of rock and concrete subjected to intense dynamic loads.

Abstract:A plastic-damage constitutive model for concrete complying with the laws of thermodynamics is proposed based on continuum damage mechanics theory. The expression of plastic Helmholtz free energy that contains the plasticity and damage is used to describe the plasticity and damage degradation behavior of concrete. Moreover. the Weibull distribution hypothesis of damage index and damage energy release rate is introduced in the damage evolution equations, with the effects of damage considered in elastic stiffness. The damage constitutive equations, damage evolution equations and plastic deformation of concrete are derived. The results of the proposed model agree well with the experimental data. An effective three dimensional fiber beam-column element model is developed, for the seismic damage analysis of a high-rise structure on explicit dynamic numerical platform, with the uniaxial damage constitutive relations of concrete proposed in present paper being used, and the structure analysis results are compared to the data from shaking table test. The present work shows that the seismic damage assessment based on the proposed model and strategy is reasonable and reliable in the seismic performance analysis of high-rise RC structures.

Abstract:Based on Irreversible Thermodynamic Theory and continuum damage mechanics, accounting the coupling relation of plastic stain and damage, an internal variable function was supposed between the plastic Helmholtz energy and the elastic Helmholtz energy. The expression of plastic Helmholtz energy was confirmed by proposing an expression of the internal function. Accounting the shape of Weibull distribution, the damage evolution equation of uniaxial compression concrete was deduced by establishing the relation of damage variable and damage energy dissipation rate, which was redefined by the new expression of plastic Helmholtz energy. And an empirical expression of plastic strain was given based on the plastic characteristic of the material. Uniaxial compression test results were used for verification of the model, which can reflect well the nonlinear feature and damage evolution of concrete.
The Visco-Elastic Plastic Damage Model Based on the Principle of Minimum Dissipative Energy

Abstract:Based on two kinds of visco-elastic plastic damage constitutive equations according to "hypothesis of strain equivalence" and "hypothesis of complementary energy", the principle of minimum dissipative energy is applied to visco-elastic plastic damage theory of solid materials. The nonlinear evolution equations of visco-plastic strain, damage variable and strengthening or softening parameter of damaged materials are presented. Visco-elastic plastic damage constitutive equations and three nonlinear evolution equations of damaged material, are considered and two different visco-elastic plastic damage models A and B of solid materials are established, and these two model are examined. Finally, the visco-elastic plastic dynamic damage problem of a concrete gravity dam due to earthquake load are analyzed by adopting visco-elastic plastic damage models A. Results show that this model can be used to analyze the dynamic damage of concrete gravity dam.

Abstract:Firstly, a plastic-damage constitutive model for concrete complying with the laws of thermodynamics is proposed based on continuum damage mechanics theory. The damage constitutive equations, damage evolution equations and plastic deformation of concrete are derived. Secondly, Fiber damage analysis model(FDAM) for RC beam-column member is established by analyzing section of fiber beam column element, which was developed with VUEL subroutine based on ABAQUS/Explicit platform, with the uniaxial damage constitutive relations of concrete proposed in present paper being used. The member damage index is defined, which can describe the nonlinear damage behavior of RC members under any loadings. Accuracy of the model is identified preliminarily by comparing with the analysis results of solid element. Finally, a numerical analysis model based on finite element program ABAQUS combined with the proposed damage model is built to analyze the seismic damage of a high-rise structure, and the structure analysis results are compared to the data from shaking table test.
Rate-dependent Endochronic Damage Constitutive Model for Concrete

Abstract:Concrete is a type of rate-dependent material. In order to describe the strength and detormanon characteristics of concrete under impact loads,an endochronic damage constitutive model with the effect of strain rate taken into account is proposed. In this model,the elasto-plasticity of concrete is described by endochronic theory,so that the concept of the yield surface is not needed. And the behavior of stiff- ness degeneration due to microcrack propagation is described by damage theory. Based on the dynamic experiments,incremental evolvement law of damage is introduced. The comparison of numerical and ex- perimental results shows that the model can well represent the uniaxial and biaxial dynamic behavior of concrete. Finally,the proposed model is used to analyze a simply supported beam loaded by an impact dis- placement load at the middle of the span. The analyzing result shows that the strain rate dependence of the material can have a great effect on the strength and stiffness of concrete structures subjected to im- pact loads.
