Abstract:Resin matrix composite materials have characteristics such as high strength ratio and modulus ratio,good anti-fatigue properties and technology performance,able to design and so on.In the industrial it has always been attached importance.Various composite materials products have been applied to all walks of life,especially the aerospace field.The process from raw material to create products of composite materials need all to cure and form.The ways of curing and forming have been dozens.We introduce major matrix solidification methods and forming processes of composite materials domestic and foreign,and related researches.Solidification methods mainly include heat-curing,radiation-curing and microwave-curing.Forming processes mainly include die pressing forming,penetration forming,winding forming,draw and wring forming.The prospect of processes research and application are described.

Abstract:The preparation of graphene-reinforced metal matrix composites is promising. Graphene has many excellent properties as a reinforcement. However, easy reunion and poor wettability are the challenges for the preparation of graphene-reinforced metal matrix composites. Aiming at the problems of graphene being uniformly dispersed in the matrix and the interface bonding strength between the graphene and the matrix, this article will discuss the influence of powder mixing method and molding process on composite materials during the preparation of graphene-reinforced aluminum matrix composites.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) with ultra-high mechanical properties are attractive reinforcements to fabricate light weight, high strength metal matrix composites. In this paper, research progress on CNTs/GNPs reinforced magnesium matrix composites is systematically reviewed. This review focuses on the recent development of the preparation techniques, strengthening and toughening mechanism, interface structure of magnesium matrix composites reinforced by carbonaceous nanomaterials. Four kinds of preparation techniques are introduced, including powder metallurgy, stirring casting, disintegrated melt deposition and friction stir process. The yield strength of composites increases with the addition of GNPs/CNTs. Several possible factors can contribute to this: (1) grain size refinement; (2) load-transfer effects; (3) generation of the dislocation density due to strain generated by the thermal expansion mismatch between the matrix and GNPs/CNTs; (4) Orowan strengthening caused by the resistance of closely spaced GNPs/CNTs to the passing of dislocations. In addition, hydrogen storage behaviors, thermal properties and corrosion resistance of composites are also briefly introduced. In the end, this review summarizes the limitations of magnesium matrix composites at present stage as well as the prospect of its future development.

Abstract:Significant progress has been made in magnesium-based composites during recent decades, especially for the appearance of magnesium matrix composite reinforced by nanoparticles. The nanoparticles added not only exhibit a good strengthening effect, but also maintain the initial toughness of the matrix, effectively balancing the contradiction between the strength and plasticity in the traditional magnesium matrix composites. The magnesium matrix nanocomposites with excellent mechanical properties have pushed the development of magnesium matrix composites to a new stage. However, it is very difficult to disperse the nanoparticles in metal melt especially in magnesium melt which is different from other metal melts and dangerous during the cast processing. This means that the preparation of magnesium matrix nanocomposite is extremely challenging. Further, the magnesium matrix nanocomposites possess a distinctive characteristic in deformation behavior, strengthening and toughening mechanism due to their special size effect of nanoparticles. Accordingly, this review will focus on the new preparation technologies, deformation behavior, mechanical properties and strengthening and toughening mechanisms. The potential applications, development trends and future research ideas of magnesium matrix nanocomposite are also prospected.

Abstract:AZ91 magnesium matrix composite was fabricated by squeeze infiltration process. The aluminum silicate short fibers were used as reinforcement, and aluminum phosphate was adopted as binder, fabricating process was improved as well as reducing fabricating cost effectively. The optimum technique of squeeze casting, that was, preform-body temperature of 6600C, mould temperature of 5600C, pouring temperature of 7600C and pressure of 30~50MPa. The reaction products were investigated by optical microscopic, XRD and SEM. The results show that an ideal stronger interface is formed by the chemical reaction between magnesium alloy matrix and aluminum phosphate binder due to the produce of MgO particles and a little MgAl2O4 particles in the interface. AZ91 magnesium matrix composite is well-organized, and its grain size is significantly smaller than that of the matrix. The structure of AZ91 magnesium matrix composite is uniform without casting defects such as shrinkages and inclusions.

Abstract:As a new type of carbon material reinforcement, graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) have excellent mechanical, electrical, thermal and optical properties. Adding GNPs with a large specific surface area to the magnesium matrix can significantly improve the mechanical properties, the thermal and electrical properties of the magnesium matrix. However, so far, few reports focused on GNPs reinforced magnesium matrix composites, especially for lack of feasible fabrication technologies. Thus, in the present work, a new method for fabricating GNPs reinforced magnesium matrix composites is presented. First, the GNPs were dispersed by ultrasonic dispersion. Subsequently, the AZ91D magnesium alloy particles and the uniformly dispersed GNPs were mixed in a V-type powder mixer. Finally, GNPs reinforced magnesium matrix composites were prepared by semi-solid thixomolding. The effects of GNPs contents (0.3%, 0.6%, 0.9%, mass fraction) on the microstructure and properties of magnesium matrix composites were studied. The results show that the GNPs were uniformly distributed in the matrix, which were well combined with the matrix, and the addition of GNPs could refine the grain size and reduce porosity. Compared with AZ91D magnesium alloy, the addition of GNPs improved the tensile strength and hardness of the material. When the content of GNPs was 0.6%, the mechanical properties of the composites were the best, and the hardness and tensile strength reach up to 92.3 HV and 245 MPa.

Abstract:Graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) have been considered as ideal nano-reinforcements for magnesium matrix composites (MMCs) owing to their excellent mechanical properties. It is necessary to develop efficient fabrication method for reality application of GNPs reinforced MMCs. Here, AZ91D magnesium alloy-graphene nanoplatelets (AZ91D-GNPs) composites were fabricated by thixomolding process for the first time. OM, SEM, EDS, HRTEM, XRD, and Raman spectroscopy were used for characterization of the composites. GNPs were well-dispersed in the Mg matrix and a strong interfacial bonding had been formed between GNPs and alloy matrix. Based on response surface methodology, quadratic prediction models had been developed for the ultimate tensile strength (UTS), elongation (δ), Vickers hardness (HV) and porosity (P) of composites, respectively. The interaction effects between two explanatory variables, the content of GNPs (C) and the barrel temperature (TB), on microstructure and mechanical properties of composites were investigated using dimensional response surface. The optimization for thixomolding process was investigated using “Numerical optimization process”. The optimal UTS, δ, HV and P achieved for AZ91D-GNPs composites were 38.4%, 85.7%, 29.9%, and 33.3% higher than those obtained for AZ91D magnesium alloy, respectively. The utilized preparation technology is a very promising technique for mass-scale production and application of GNPs reinforced MMCs.

Abstract:Magnesium matrix composites are essential lightweight metal matrix composites, following aluminum matrix composites, with outstanding application prospects in automotive, aerospace lightweight and biomedical materials because of their high specific strength, low density and specific stiffness, good casting performance and rich resources. However, the inherent low plasticity and poor fatigue resistance of magnesium hamper its further application to a certain extent. Many researchers have tried many strengthening methods to improve the properties of magnesium alloys, while the relationship between wear resistance and plasticity still needs to be further improved. The nanoparticles added exhibit a good strengthening effect, especially the ceramic nanoparticles. Nanoparticle-reinforced magnesium matrix composites not only exhibit a high impact toughness, but also maintain the high strength and wear resistance of ceramic materials, effectively balancing the restriction between the strength and toughness. Therefore, this work aims to provide a review of the state of the art of research on the matrix, reinforcement, design, properties and potential applications of nano-reinforced phase-reinforced magnesium matrix composites (especially ceramic nanoparticle-reinforced ones). The conventional and potential matrices for the fabrication of magnesium matrix composites are introduced. The classification and influence of ceramic reinforcements are assessed, and the factors influencing interface bonding strength between reinforcements and matrix, regulation and design, performance and application are analyzed. Finally, the scope of future research in this field is discussed.
Study on Preparation and Properties of Al_2O_3-SiO_2/AZ91D Magnesium Alloy Composite Materials

Abstract:Al2O3-SiO2/AZ91D magnesium composite materials with compacted structure were prepared from aluminium silicate fibre and AZ91D magnesium alloy.The preparation technique for the composite materials was introduced.The suitable conditions for squeeze casting technique are as follows: 650 ℃ substrates temperature, 550 ℃ die temperature,760 ℃ moulding temperature and 30～50 MPa pressure.The materials were characterized by XRD,SEM,OM and EDS.The results showed the materials were mostly composed of Mg,β-Mg17Al12、MgO、AlPO4、3Al2O3·2SiO2 and Mg2Si crystals and so on.MgO and Chinese-character-type Mg2Si phases were produced by the reaction between the magnesium alloy and aluminium silicate fibre crystallized.Meanwhile,a closely-bonded layer was formed at the interface between the matrix magnesium and the fibre.The hardness and oil lubrication properties of the composite materials are higher than those of the magnesium alloy.

High-performance lightweight materials give rise to a demand for magnesium-based composites. Magnesium metal matrix composites have found extensive applications in the aerospace and automotive industries due to their remarkable mechanical properties. Limitations in dispersion, strength, and interface strength of magnesium-based composites are seen through the addition of some hybrid reinforcements and different fabrication techniques. In this regard, previous studies have demonstrated the ability of various reinforcements such as graphene, carbon nano tubes, silicon carbide, and titanium carbide to a magnesium matrix for the enhancement of its metallurgical properties. There are still several challenges in the development of magnesium metal matrix composites, such as non-homogeneous distribution, poor creep resistance at elevated temperatures, limited cold work ability, and low corrosion resistance. The challenges that need to be overcome and suggestion for improving the wear resistance and frictional properties of magnesium metal matrix composites were studied and discussed. This review evaluates the importance of different reinforcement percentages as well as the development of magnesium metal matrix composites. The different types of fabrication techniques that are well suited to overcome the challenges of poor dispersing, non-homogeneous distribution, interfacial problems, and poor wettability are discussed. Microstructure analysis, the agglomerating effect, and matrix bonding strength are also discussed. The challenges and future scope of research are discussed for the demonstration of the importance of more scientific studies in magnesium metal matrix composites.

Abstract:Magnesium matrix composites have been prepared on pure magnesium and AZ31 alloy matrix by a combination of friction stir processing (FSP) and high-energy ball milling (HEBM) techniques. Microstructures and mechanical properties of as-fabricated samples are systematically investigated. The research shows that reinforcement HEBM particles disperse in the stir zone (SZ) as agglomerated streamline clusters and separated particles. In addition, the nano particles less than 100 nm can be directly observed in the SZ. The HEBM particles effectively refined the grains in SZ and probably resulted in high-density dislocations by pinning effect. The results observed by electron back-scattering diffraction (EBSD) also reveal that HEBM particles addition brings positive effect on the grain orientation randomization in the SZ. As for mechanical properties, macrohardness of powder aggregation in pure magnesium matrix is more than twice the value of neighboring normal SZ. In AZ31 alloy matrix composites, HEBM powders addition increased both yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of SZ samples by more than 30% while maintaining high ductility.

Abstract:Currently, many gratifying signs of progress have been made in magnesium (Mg) matrix composites (MMCs) by virtue of their high mechanical properties both at room and elevated temperatures. Although the commonly used reinforcements in MMCs are ceramic particles, they often provide improved yield and ultimate stresses by a significant loss in ductility. Therefore, hard metallic phases were introduced as alternative candidates for the manufacturing of MMCs, especially titanium (Ti). It has a high melting point, high Young's modulus, high plasticity, low level of mutual solubility with Mg matrix, and closer thermal expansion coefficient to that of Mg metal than that of ceramic particles. It is highly preferable to provide both high ultimate stress and ductility in Mg matrix. However, many critical challenges for the fabrication of Ti-reinforced MMCs remain, such as Ti's homogeneity, low recovery rate, and the optimization of interfacial bonding strength between Mg and Ti, etc. Meanwhile, different fabrication methods have various effects on the microstructures, mechanical properties, and the interfacial strength of Ti-reinforced MMCs. Hence, this review placed emphasis on the microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties of Ti-reinforced MMCs fabricated by different techniques. The influencing factors that govern the strengthening mechanisms were systematically compared and discussed. Future research trends, key issues, and prospects were also proposed to develop Ti-reinforced MMCs.

Abstract:Magnesium is the lightest metal used as the source for constructional alloys. Today Magnesium based metal matrix composites are widely used in aerospace, structural, oceanic and automobile applications for its light weight, low density(two thirds that of aluminium), good high temperature mechanical properties and good to excellent corrosion resistance. The reason of designing metal matrix composite is to put in the attractive attributes of metals and ceramics to the base metal. In this study magnesium metal matrix hybrid composite are developed by reinforcing pure magnesium with silicon carbide (SiC) and aluminium oxide by method of powder metallurgy. This method is less expensive and very efficient. The Hardness test was performed on the specimens prepared by powder metallurgy method. The results revealed that the micro hardness of composites was increased with the addition of silicon carbide and alumina particles in magnesium metal matrix composites.

Abstract:Magnesium matrix composites have been extensively investigated due to their light weight and machinability. The interfaces are the most important part of these composites, and their properties determine the properties of composites to a large extent. However, there are still many problems with interface bonding. The reinforcements are faced with the dilemma of poor dispersion, bad interfacial reaction, and poor wettability, which limits further improvements in the mechanical properties. Surface coating treatment of reinforcements is considered to be one of the effective methods to protect reinforcements and modify the interface. This review presents an overview of different coating materials on various reinforcements. The major roles of coatings in the composites and the properties of the composites are discussed. Future directions and potential research areas in the field of magnesium matrix composites reinforced with coated reinforcements are also highlighted.

Abstract:Magnesium matrix composites reinforced by TiC particulates was prepared using in situ synthesis method. The mechanical properties and damping capacity of the composites was examined. The experimental results revealed that the TiC particulates play an important role on mechanical properties and damping capacity of the composites. In our study, compared to AZ91 magnesium alloy, damping capacity and tensile strength of the composites improve. The mechanical characterization is explained with the strengthening mechanisms as grain size and Orowan bowing. The damping characterization is explained with dislocation motion, twinning, grain boundary slip and interface slip.
