Abstract:Objective This study was to determine whether laser induced fluorescence(LIF) could be used to diagnose gastric carcinoma and to determine the major characteristics of this LIF. Methods LIF of 43 gastric carcinoma surgical specimens was tested. Results In 36 of 43 specimens(83 7%), the intensities of the first and second wave peak were 4 695 u±3 063 u and 1 453 u±1 537 u, respectively, and the wave trough was 1 428 u±1 529 u. But in normal tissues, they were 12 259 u±3 547 u, 4 385 u±1 967 u and 3 021 u±2 072 u, respectively. The ratio of normal tissue/cancer were 2 6∶1, 3 0∶1 and 2 1∶1, recpectively. In cancer lesions, the wavelength of the first wave peak shifted to red and that of the second wave peak shifted to violet. The diagnostic sensitivity was 83 7%. Conclusions The results showed, there were obvious differences between the LIF of carcinoma and non carcinoma tissues. The use of LIF may have a bright prospect in earlier cancer detection as a non traumatic examination method.
