Abstract:In long-term observations, the attitude drift of a coil vector magnetometer caused by mechanical deformation will directly affect the accuracy of magnetic direction measurements. To solve this problem, we propose a characterization model and calibration method for the measurement error associated with attitude drift. The proposed model uses an attitude matrix to define a mapping from the unmeasurable characteristic angle to the measurable magnetometer attitude. We propose a new coordinate system to establish a characterization model linking the characteristic angle of the magnetometer attitude to the measurement error of the magnetic direction, thereby permitting quantitative analysis of the attitude drift and real-time suppression of its negative influence on the measurement accuracy without complex manual operations. The proposed model shows that in the presence of small attitude changes, the measurement error of the magnetic inclination is mainly determined by the south–north nonlevelness of magnetometer, and the error of magnetic declination is mainly determined by the magnetometer orientation and east–west nonlevelness. Our simulations show that when the east–west nonlevelness, south–north nonlevelness, and orientation angle of the magnetometer are , , and , respectively, the measurement errors (baseline shift) of the magnetic inclination and declination are and , respectively. To ver- fy the results, we designed an experimental platform and conducted a comparative experiment. The results show that in the presence of the aforementioned attitude parameters, the measurement errors of the magnetic inclination and declination can be reduced by 97.8% and 88.6%, respectively, through error calculation and baseline correction.

Abstract:The method of obtaining attitude angle by the comparison of the magnetic field vector from actual measurement using 3-axis magnetometer with the data calculated from orbit propagation and International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF) model is suitable for pico-satellite application of small volume, light weight, and low power consumption. The attitude angle error consists of magnetic field vector measurement error and magnetic field vector calculation error. After the analysis, it was clear that A/D converter, magnetic sensor error, temperature, nearby ferrous materials, etc. will result in measurement error up to 1.74°. And the calculated magnetic field vector error is about 0.5° when Kepler orbit propagator and IGRF model was used. Therefore, the total attitude angle error is 2.24°.

Abstract:Misalignment error is one key factor influencing the measurement accuracy of geomagnetic vector measurement system, which should be calibrated with the difficulties that sensors measure different physical information and coordinates are invisible. A new misalignment calibration method by rotating a parallelepiped frame is proposed. Simulation and experiment result show the effectiveness of calibration method. The experimental system mainly contains DM-050 three-axis fluxgate magnetometer, INS (inertia navigation system), aluminium parallelepiped frame, aluminium plane base. Misalignment angles are calculated by measured data of magnetometer and INS after rotating the aluminium parallelepiped frame on aluminium plane base. After calibration, RMS error of geomagnetic north, vertical and east are reduced from 349.441nT, 392.530nT and 562.316nT to 40.130nT, 91.586nT and 141.989nT respectively.

Abstract:This paper presents a method for the measurement of relative vertical error motions with respect to vertical misalignment error of a bench center by using an optical micrometer. A roll is used as a reference object and the optical micrometer are employed as a measurement device. In order to achieve an accurate evaluation, a measurement method is proposed to remove the straightness error and the concentricity error of the roll. Through experiment, the relative vertical parallelism error motion with respect to the misalignment error was evaluated to be 1.44 μm and the vertical straightness error was evaluated to be 14.01 μm.

Abstract:Geomagnetic field is widely used for remote sensing, environment observation, geoscience and geology research. A portable geomagnetic field vector measurement system is designed, but misalignment greatly influences measurement accuracy. It is calibrated by establishing interim coordinate without measuring the projection of geomagnetic field and gravity. In addition, earth's magnetic dip, the accurate attitude of equipment and careful operation in collection process are not need. It is easy to implement the experiment, and misalignment angles between sensors are calculated. Magnetometer, inertial navigation system, host platform frame and perpendicular platform are used in experiment. After calibration, North, Vertical and East vector measurement error are reduced to 3.9%, 4.7% and 6.6% respectively. Inclination and declination error are reduced from 4.374 degrees and 4.974 degrees to 0.173 degrees and 0.309 degrees respectively. Thus, it is convenient and effective for misalignment calibration. Abstract:The misalignment errors of magnetometer array are vulnerable to vibrations, which deteriorates the magnetic anomaly detection performance severely and brings strong demands for real-time calibrations. We propose a real-time calibration method of magnetometer array’s misalignment errors, which utilizes a standard three-axis coil to generate an alternating current magnetic field with varied magnitudes and directions. Then the misalignment errors are calibrated by minimizing the difference between experimentally calibrated magnetic fields of magnetometers and theoretically calculated magnetic fields of coils with the Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm and Biot-Savart’s law. It does not require the expensive high-precision non-magnetic rotation platform, homogenous magnetic environment and additional scalar magnetometer compared to the conventional methods, which facilitates the real-time calibration with ambient magnetic fluctuations. The investigations demonstrate that the X-axis magnetic field gradient is decreased from 3665 nT to 68 nT and localization error is reduced from 1.6 m to 0.11 m with the proposed calibration method.

Abstract:Coil vector magnetometer is an advanced instrument that can perform integrated multielement geomagnetic measurements and has excellent prospects for geoscience research and resource exploration applications. The attitude deviation is one of the main error sources of magnetic direction measurements of the coil vector magnetometer. The existing attitude determination method requires the use of additional auxiliary instruments (e.g., a spirit level). Furthermore, this method cannot be used to perform direct determination of the directional shift of the bias field caused by attitude deviation, and the magnetism of the detection instrument inevitably introduces new measurement errors. Therefore, it is difficult to achieve high-precision attitude deviation correction. To address this issue, we propose a novel electrical method to enable direct, high-precision determination of the attitude deviation and the corresponding correction indicator for the coil vector magnetometer using only a single rotation of the magnetometer and applying bias fields, thereby realizing comprehensive high-precision hard and soft corrections of the attitude deviation via indicator alignment without relying on auxiliary detection instruments. In addition, we developed a dedicated experimental platform and then validated both the practicality and the performance of the proposed method in a geomagnetic observatory. Comparative experimental results for two coil vector magnetometers indicate that when the correction indicator's alignment inaccuracy is less than 1 nT, the magnetic direction measurement error caused by the attitude deviation can be less than 6 in.

Abstract:<p>The geomagnetic vector field is always measured by a strapdown triaxial magnetometer on a vehicle. We propose a comprehensive calibration method of strapdown triaxial magnetometers with the aid of external attitude information from a gyro. The temporal misalignment between the two sensors will introduce unexpected measurement errors. The traditional calibration method was expanded to include a temporal misalignment error model for a multi-sensor system, and it was further improved to overcome the ill-posed problem in practical applications. Additionally, the inherent errors of the magnetometer and the vehicle-generated magnetic inferences can be effectively calibrated. Simulations and experimental results demonstrated the success of the method. In comparison with the traditional method, the improvement ratio values of the magnetic field components for the proposed method approximately doubled. This indicated that the algorithm can effectively enhance the measurement accuracy of a strapdown triaxial magnetometer, especially for vector field measurements.</p>

Abstract:The triaxial magnetometer is an essential device for measuring the weak magnetic field in space. Although the three axes of the ideal magnetometer are entirely coincident with the marked axis, they are not strictly coincident due to the sensor manufacturing limitation. Moreover, the effects of zero drift and long-term magnetic offset make it not ideal for measuring magnetic field. Thus, an error correction model is required. In this paper, the three-axis non-coincident error, zero deviation error, and sensitivity coefficient error of a single sensor are re-modeled, and the triaxial non-coincident correction model is proposed for the first time. Moreover, trigonometric function fitting is utilized to determine the triaxial sensitivity coefficients kx, ky, kz, zero deviation coefficients Bx0, By0, Bz0, and triaxial non-coincident angles α1, α2, α3, β1, β2, β3 and verify the three-axis integrated error correction. Besides, the feasibility of the calibration model is evaluated through simulations. Ideally, the corrected absolute error of the triaxial geomagnetic field reduces from 103 nT to 10-11 nT, which is almost negligible. The maximum absolute errors under the measurement noise levels of 5nT, 15nT, 30nT, 50nT, are obtained as 3nT, 6nT, 18nT, 35nT, respectively. This means that the general experimental correction requirements are fulfilled. finally, the feasibility of the calibration model is verified by experiment, and the fluctuation of the total magnetic field intensity is 60 nT, which is reduced by about 40 times.

Abstract:Multifunctional magnetometers enable high-precision observations of the geomagnetic direction and total magnetic field, which have broad applications in geoscience research and space weather forecasting. However, inconsistencies still occur between the optical and magnetic axes of classic multifunctional magnetometers, and few studies have investigated their direct detection. To address this issue, we propose a novel method for the detection of the optical-magnetic axis inconsistency. The magnetic azimuths for the magnetic axis and the optical axis of the multifunctional magnetometer are determined through the bias field loading and fluxgate theodolite, thereby allowing direct detection of the inconsistency. The proposed method is also modeled to quantify the detection errors introduced by the total-field sensor and the observation operation. In addition, we develop a dedicated experimental platform and conduct comparative tests at a geomagnetic observatory to validate the practicality and performance of the method. The experimental results show that the proposed method can significantly reduce the deviation of the declination curve measured by the multifunctional magnetometer relative to the curve measured by the fluxgate theodolite from to , achieving a 99.5% reduction rate.

Abstract:This article proposes a nonlinear correction method for the magnetic gradient tensor system, aiming to mitigate single-sensor errors and misalignment errors within the sensor array during measurement. Initially, this article establishes a sensor error model based on the mechanism of sensor error generation. Subsequently, the total least-squares (TLS) ellipsoid fitting method is employed to solve the sensor error compensation parameters. Following this, this article introduces the differential evolution (DE) algorithm for the nonlinear correction of misalignment errors within the sensor array. The DE algorithm, when utilized for correcting errors in the magnetic gradient tensor system, demonstrates the ability to adaptively adjust parameters, effectively addressing complex optimization problems to minimize errors. Experimental findings reveal that even under nonuniform magnetic fields, the sensor outputs exhibit significant improvements in overlap and coaxiality post-correction. Moreover, after undergoing ellipsoid fitting correction, the root-mean-square error (RMSE) of the total magnetic intensity (TMI) for each magnetic sensor is reduced to below 100 nT. In addition, the average RMSE of each component within the actual tensor system drops from 6079.15 to 55.11 nT/m, thereby confirming the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:An in situ method has been proposed for measuring all nonorthogonal angles of the beams and triaxial coils in a three-axis vector optically pumped magnetometer (OPM). Based on the combination and alignment of two pump beams, each of which can achieve biaxial transverse measurement in a time-sharing regime under modulated magnetic fields, a 3-D orthogonal coordinate measurement system is obtained, and the measurement models for three categories (six types) of nonorthogonal angles are established theoretically. On this basis, we experimentally measured the nonorthogonal angles along with related uncertainties at different modulated frequencies and strengths of the magnetic fields. The nonorthogonal angles were (3.65° ± 0.52°) between the two pump beams before compensation. They were (7.05° ± 0.23°) between the $X$ - and $Y$ -axis coils, (8.89° ± 0.21°) between the $Y$ - and $Z$ -axis coils, (5.23° ± 0.27°) between the $X$ - and $Z$ -axis coils, (7.24° ± 0.24°) between the $x$ -direction pump beam and $X$ -axis coil, and (9.10° ± 0.22°) between the $z$ -direction pump beam and the $Z$ -axis coil. This study measures the magnitudes of six types of nonorthogonality, without making an assumption of ideal orthogonality or using auxiliary calibration equipment. Moreover, this method can be extended to several other kinds of OPMs with simple modifications. This study is critical for evaluating and reducing the misalignment error to improve the accuracy of three-axis vector OPMs.

Abstract:The three-axis coil system is most commonly used in magnetic field measurement. The coil constant is an important parameter. We demonstrate a method to measure the coil constant based on the Larmor frequency. An elliptically polarized light is used to simultaneously excite the spin orientation and spin alignment via synchronous optical pumping. And then the coil system can be calibrated by measuring the magnetic resonance frequency of Bell-Bloom magnetometer. The advantage of this method is that the coil constants of all three directions can be obtained without any active adjustments. It is important for some applications, such as measuring the biological magnetic field with the integrated magnetometer. The method for calibration of a three-axis coil system is experimentally exploited. The experimental results show that the calibration accuracy of pT level can be achieved.

Abstract:The magnetic gradient tensor systems using vector magnetic sensors are easily affected by single sensor error and sensor array misalignment, significantly affecting target localization accuracy. To address this problem, based on the differential measurement theory of magnetic gradient tensor, a vector sensor error model was established, and the single sensor errors were corrected using the total least square (TLS) ellipsoid fitting method. Besides, a misalignment error correction model for the sensor is obtained by constructing a rotation matrix for the magnetic sensor's three-axis orthogonal coordinate system transformation, and the tensor system can be aligned by performing the TLS estimation of the rotation angle. After calibration, the experimental results show that the outputs of each sensor have high coincidence and coaxiality. The root mean square error (RMSE) of the total magnetic intensity (TMI) is reduced to within 100 nT, and the RMSE of the tensor component is reduced to within 85 nT/m. Within a range of 5 m, the magnetic target positioning error is reduced to less than 25.1 cm. This technology can improve the measurement accuracy of the magnetic gradient tensor system with high stability and reliability.

Magnetic Sensor Error Compensation Algorithm Based on Ellipse Rotation

Abstract:According to the magnetic compass error compensation problem under hard and soft magnetic interference, this paper proposes a magnetic sensor error compensation algorithm based on ellipse rotation. It analyzes the reason of generating magnetic compass error and builds the elliptic rotating model, uses nonlinear least-square fitting algorithm to derive the error compensation parameter formula, and verifies the error compensation algorithm using the measurements of Honeywell biaxial reluctance sensor. Experimental results show that, compared with the traditional elliptic error compensation model, the maximum course angle error reduces from 2.0° to 0.4° by using the proposed elliptic rotation error compensation model.

Integrated Error Compensation Method for Three-Axis Magnetometer in Geomagnetic Navigation

Abstract:In the process of geomagnetic field measurement, the three-axis magnetometer is affected by various interference factors and produces various errors, which have an impact on the measurement accuracy. In this paper, the joint estimation iterative algorithm is used to calibrate the three-axis magnetometer, and the performance of the method is compared with the EKF algorithm and the nonlinear least squares algorithm. The simulation results show that in the three methods, the error average and the standard deviation of the joint estimation iterative algorithm are the least and the convergence rate is the fastest, which proves that the method is effective and usable. The experimental results show that the joint estimation iterative algorithm reduces the mean average of the measured value of the three-axis magnetometer from 69.5211nT to 9.241nT, the standard deviation is reduced from 122.0014nT to 19.941nT, and the suppression ratio reaches 86.71%. The result suggest an effective way for the calibration of three-axis fluxgate magnetometers.
Sources of heading error in optically pumped magnetometers operated at Earth's magnetic field

Abstract:When optically pumped magnetometers are aimed for the use in Earth's magnetic field, the orientation of the sensor to the field direction is of special importance to achieve accurate measurement result. Measurement errors and inaccuracies related to the heading of the sensor can be an even more severe problem in the case of special operational configurations, such as for example the use of strong off-resonant pumping. We systematically study the main contributions to the heading error in systems that promise high magnetic field resolutions at Earth's magnetic field strengths, namely the non-linear Zeeman splitting and the orientation dependent light shift. The good correspondence of our theoretical analysis to experimental data demonstrates that both of these effects are related to a heading dependent modification of the interaction between the laser light and the dipole moment of the atoms. Also, our results promise a compensation of both effects using a combination of clockwise and counter clockwise circular polarization.

Abstract:Magnetic sensor array is usually designed for object detection and localization, where sensor coordinate is required to be consistent. Misalignment angles between coordinates should be calculated and calibrated. A new calibration method is proposed in order to calibrate the misalignment error between host frame and sensors. Host platform frame and perpendicular platform are used to obtain misalignment angles of sensor array. Experiment results show that it can estimate all angles of magnetic sensors and suppress misalignment error. Misalignment rms error is a reduction from 1109.7 to 27.6 nT, which means 2.48% indeed, thus improving the remote sensing accuracy of array which is unified to host frame coordinate.

Abstract:Commercially available anisotropic magnetoresistive (AMR) magnetometers exhibit on the order of 1 nanotesla (nT) sensitivity in small size, weight, and power (SWaP) packages. However, AMR magnetometer accuracy is diminished by properties such as static offsets, gain uncertainty, off-axis coupling, and temperature effects. This work presents a measurement of the magnitude of these effects for a Honeywell HMC1053 magnetometer and evaluates a method for calibrating the observed effects by multivariate non-linear regression using a 24-parameter measurement equation.
