Abstract:Experiments with both qualitative and quantitative factors occur frequently in practical applications. Many construction methods for this kind of designs, such as marginally coupled designs, were proposed to pursue some good space-filling structures. However, few criteria can be adapted to quantify the space-filling property of designs involving both qualitative and quantitative factors. As the uniformity is an important space-filling property of a design, in this paper, a new uniformity criterion, qualitative-quantitative discrepancy (QQD), is proposed for assessing the uniformity of designs with both types of factors. The closed form and lower bounds of the QQD are presented to calculate the exact QQD values of designs and recognize the uniform designs directly. In addition, a connection between the QQD and the balance pattern is derived, which not only helps to obtain a new lower bound but also provides a statistical justification of the QQD. Several examples show that the proposed criterion is reasonable and useful since it can distinguish distinct designs very well.

Abstract:A uniform design scatters its design points evenly on the experimental domain according to some discrepancy measure. In this paper all the design points of a full factorial design can be split into two subdesigns. One is called the complementary design of the other. The complementary design theories of characterizing one design through the other under the four commonly used discrepancy measures are investigated. Based on these complementary design theories, some general rules for searching uniform designs through their complementary designs are proposed. An efficient method to check if a design has repeated points is introduced and a modified threshold-accepting algorithm is proposed to search uniform or nearly uniform designs without replications. The new algorithm is shown to be more efficient by comparing with other existing methods. Many new uniform or nearly uniform designs without replications are tabulated and compared.

Abstract:Discrete discrepancy has been utilized as a uniformity measure for comparing and evaluating factorial designs. In this paper, for asymmetrical factorials, we give some linkages between uniformity measured by the discrete discrepancy and other criteria, such as generalized minimum aberration (Xu and Wu, 2001) and minimum projection variance (Ai and Zhang, 2004). These close linkages show a significant justification for the discrete discrepancy used to measure uniformity of factorial designs, and provide an additional rationale for using uniform designs.
Randomized Benchmarking Using Unitary t-Design for Average Fidelity Estimation of Practical Quantum Circuit

Abstract:Randomized benchmarking is a useful scheme for evaluation the average fidelity of a noisy quantum circuit. However, it is insensitive to the unitary error. Here, we propose a method of randomized benchmarking in which a unitary t-design is applied and by which the unitary error estimation can be converted to analysis of pseudo-randomness on a set of unitary operators. We give a bound on the number of randomized benchmarking sequences, when performing a unitary t-design on n-qubit d-dimensional system. By applying local random unitary operators, a decomposition of a unitary t-design, the bound is more practical than the previous bound for multi-qubit circuit. We also give a rigorous bound of a diamond norm between arbitrary and uniform distributions of a set of unitary operators to form an ϵ-approximate unitary t-design. It can be used to quantitatively analyze the corresponding average fidelity and errors in a large-scale quantum circuit.

Abstract:The theory of uniform design has received increasing interest because of its wide application in the field of computer experiments. The generalized discrete discrepancy is proposed to evaluate the uniformity of the mixed-level factorial design. In this paper, the authors give a lower bound of the generalized discrete discrepancy and provide some construction methods of optimal mixed-level uniform designs which can achieve this lower bound. These methods are all deterministic construction methods which can avoid the complexity of stochastic algorithms. Both saturated mixed-level uniform designs and supersaturated mixed-level uniform designs can be obtained with these methods. Moreover, the resulting designs are also Χ 2 -optimal and minimum moment aberration designs.

Abstract:Chen and Cheng (Ann. Statist. 27 (1999) 1948) got the relationships between a blocked symmetrical factorial design and its residual design. In this paper, we extend the study to the case of blocked mixed-level factorial designs. By introducing a concept of blocked consulting design and using MacWilliams identities and Krawtchouk polynomials in coding theory, we obtain combinatorial identities that govern the relationships between the partitioned wordlength patterns of a blocked regular mixed factorial design and that of its blocked consulting design. Based on these identities, we furthermore establish some general rules for identifying minimum aberration blocked mixed factorial designs in terms of their blocked consulting designs. Abstract:This paper provides a technique for designing truthful mechanisms for a combinatorial optimization problem, which requires composition algorithms. We show that the composition algorithm A o B is monotone if the algorithm A and the algorithm B are both monotone. Then, we apply this technique to the two-dimensional orthogonal knapsack problem with provable approximation bounds, improving the previous results in [5].

Abstract:Uniform designs have been widely applied in engineering and sciences’ innovation. When a lot of quantitative factors are investigated with as few runs as possible, a supersaturated uniform design with good overall and projection uniformity is needed. By combining combinatorial methods and stochastic algorithms, such uniform designs with flexible numbers of columns are constructed in this article under the wrap-around L_2 -discrepancy. Compared with the existing designs, the new designs and their two-dimensional projections not only have less aberration, but also have lower discrepancy. Furthermore, some novel theoretical results on the minimum-aberration, uniform and uniform projection designs are obtained.

Abstract:In 2003, Tuan showed a finiteness theorem for block-transitive point-imprimitive 3- (k(k−1)2+1,k,λ) designs. As a generalization of this result, we consider the block-transitive point-imprimitive 3- (v,k,λ) designs with v . Let D=(P,B) be a 3- (v,k,λ) design admitting G as a block-transitive point-imprimitive automorphism group, and G preserve a partition C of the points into d imprimitivity classes of size c , here v=wk(k−1)s+1 , s,w are two positive integers with gcd(s,w)=1 and 2w . We prove that, for a given positive integer s , there are only finitely many numbers v such that there exist nontrivial block-transitive point-imprimitive 3- (v,k,λ) designs with c,d≥3 . Moreover, we obtain the classification for this type of designs when s≤10 .

Abstract:More than 30 years ago, Delandtsheer and Doyen showed that the automorphism group of a block-transitive 2-design, with blocks of size k , could leave invariant a nontrivial point-partition, but only if the number of points was bounded in terms of k . Since then examples have been found where there are two nontrivial point partitions, either forming a chain of partitions, or forming a grid structure on the point set. We show, by construction of infinite families of designs, that there is no limit on the length of a chain of invariant point partitions for a block-transitive 2-design. We introduce the notion of an 'array' of a set of points which describes how the set interacts with parts of the various partitions, and we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions in terms of the 'array' of a point set, relative to a partition chain, for it to be a block of such a design.

Abstract:We consider sliced computer experiments where priori knowledge suggests that factors may have different levels of importance, and so some factors need to be paid more attention than others. A new class of sliced space-filling designs are proposed to deal with this type of sliced computer experiments, in which the whole design and each slice may have different levels of two-dimensional uniformity for different factors, besides they all achieve maximum stratification in univariate margins. They are generated by elaborately randomizing a special type of asymmetric orthogonal arrays, called asymmetric balanced sliced orthogonal arrays, which can be partitioned into several slices such that each slice is balanced and becomes an asymmetric orthogonal array after some level-collapsing. Several methods are developed to construct such asymmetric balanced sliced orthogonal arrays. Simulation study shows that the proposed designs perform well compared with other sliced designs for computer experiments.

Abstract:In many industrial applications, follow-up experimental designs are often used to explore the relationship between inputs (factors) and outputs (responses) step by step. Some extra factors with two or three levels may be added in the follow-up stage since they are quite important but may be neglected in the initial stage. In this paper, mixed-level column augmented uniform designs are proposed under the uniformity criterion, wrap-around L 2 -discrepancy (WD). The multi-stage augmented procedure is also investigated. We present the analytical expressions and the corresponding lower bounds on the WD of the column augmented designs. It is shown that the column augmented uniform designs are also the optimal designs under the non-orthogonality criterion, E ( f N O D ) . Furthermore, a construction algorithm for column augmented uniform designs is provided. Some examples show that the lower bounds are tight and the construction algorithm is effective.

Abstract:In many practical experiments, the number of possible levels for each experimental factor is often limited to a finite number. Various discrepancies, like discrete discrepancy and Lee discrepancy, have been proposed to measure the uniformity on the discrete experimental domain. However, these two discrepancies can yield unreasonable results when multiple levels are involved. In this paper, a new discrepancy, termed absolute discrepancy (AD), is proposed as a more reasonable measure of uniformity on a discrete experimental domain, particularly for discrete-numerical factors. Moreover, connections between AD and other design optimality criteria, such as generalized minimum aberration and orthogonality, are established. These connections provide strong statistical justification for AD. Some lower bounds of AD are also obtained, serving as important benchmarks for the design uniformity. In addition, uniform designs based on the AD criterion have produced better prediction performance by fitting statistical surrogate models of complex surfaces compared to their competitors. Furthermore, the application in hyperparameter optimization for machine learning algorithms also validates the superiority of uniform designs with the proposed AD criterion.

Abstract:There are two different systems of contrast parameterization when analyzing the interaction effects among the factors with more than two levels, i.e., linear-quadratic system and orthogonal components system. Based on the former system and an ANOVA model, Xu and Wu (2001) introduced the generalized wordlength pattern for general factorial designs. This paper shows that the generalized wordlength pattern exactly measures the balance pattern of interaction columns of a symmetrical design ground on the orthogonal components system, and thus an alternative angle to look at the generalized minimum aberration criterion is given.

Abstract:Blocking is often used to reduce known variability in designed experiments by collecting together homogeneous experimental units. A common modelling assumption for such experiments is that responses from units within a block are dependent. Accounting for such dependencies in both the design of the experiment and the modelling of the resulting data when the response is not normally distributed can be challenging, particularly in terms of the computation required to find an optimal design. The application of copulas and marginal modelling provides a computationally efficient approach for estimating population-average treatment effects. Motivated by an experiment from materials testing, we develop and demonstrate designs with blocks of size two using copula models. Such designs are also important in applications ranging from microarray experiments to experiments on human eyes or limbs with naturally occurring blocks of size two. We present methodology for design selection, make comparisons to existing approaches in the literature and assess the robustness of the designs to modelling assumptions.

Abstract:A fundamental and practical question for fractional factorial designs is the issue of optimal factor assignment. Recently, some new criteria, such as generalized minimum aberration, WV-criterion, NB-criterion and uniformity criterion are proposed for comparing and selecting fractions. In this paper, we indicate that these criteria agree quite well for symmetrical fraction factorial designs.
