Abstract:Mechanical properties of bulk nanocrystalline metals are summarized and compared with those of coarse-crystalline metals in terms of elastic and anelastic hardness, strength, tensile and compressive plasticity ,fracture toughness,creep,superplasticity,fatigue,wear,etc. The intrinsic and extrinsic factors which affect the mechanical behaviour are analyzed. Deformation mechanisms in bulk nanocrystalline metals are also discussed.

Abstract:The Al63Cu25Fe9Cr3 quasicrystalline was prepared by conventional casting method. The microstructures and phase composition of Al63Cu25Fe12 quasi-crystalline and Al65Cu20Fe10Cr5 phases were characterized by XRD and SEM. Aluminium based composites was fabricated by using the Al63Cu25Fe9Cr3 quasicrystalline particles as the reinforcing phase and ZL101 as matrix with mechanical stirring. The effects of quasicrystals content, on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the obtained composite, were investigated. The results show that the as-cast quasicrystalline material is composed of d-phase(Al65Cu20Fe10Cr5), I-phase(Al63Cu25Fe12), lambda-Al3Fe, beta-AlFe3 and a small amount of eta-AlCu, theta-Al2Cu phases. After heat treatment, the quasicrystalline intermediate alloy composition tends to quasicrystal phase. In the composite material, the diffusion between the quasicrystalline and the matrix alloy caused the decomposition of the structure of quasicrystalline phase. With the increase of quasicrystalline content, the tensile strength of the composites increases. However, addition of the Cr element changes the acicular beta-Fe(Al80-85Fe6-9Si10-15) phase into a manlike or bone-like alpha-Fe(Al80-85Fe4-8Si6-8Cr3-5) phase which increases the elongation of the composite. The best comprehensive mechanical properties corresponded to the 7 wt% quasicrystalline particles. Strengthening mechanism of quasicrystal reinforced aluminum matrix composites, a model that model considers the dislocation strengthening mechanism and the effect of load transfers mechanism on the tensile strength of composites. This theory calculates the tensile strength of quasicrystalline reinforced aluminum matrix composites and verifies the effectiveness of the model through experiments.

Abstract:We are generated using metal alloys, which are melted and then hardened quickly by quenching it in cold water. The intensity of the reflection peak of quasicrystals is observed by X-ray diffractometry. The results will expand the scope of the study on the phase change of quasicrystals and provide theoretical basis for applications of quasicrystals.

Abstract:The recent research progress in nanocrystalline materials by mechanical alloying has been reviewed. With the focus on the preparation, microstructure characterization and properties of mechanically alloyed nanocrystalline materials such as high strength aluminum alloys, copper alloys, refractory metallic compounds, metallic hydrogen storage materials and rare-earth permanent magnetic composites are illustrated. on this basis, summary remarks are presented on the advantageous aspects and prospects of mechanical alloying as a means to prepare nanocrystalline materials. 2024, Al-Fe-Ni, Al-Ni, Cu-Nb, Cu-Cr, FexCu100-x, Mg2Ni and so on are take as examples in the research and analysis.

Abstract:This article provides a detailed review on the generalized dynamics of soft-matter quasicrystals developed recent years. Comparing to solid quasicrystals consisted mainly with metallic alloys, soft-matter quasicrystals have been observed in liquid crystals, polymers, colloids, nanoparticles, and surfactants, which indicate quite different formation mechanism. Based on Landau-Anderson theory and group representation theory, we have studied the symmetry, symmetry breaking and elementary excitations for the observed and possible soft-matter quasicrystals. We further proposed one more elementary excitation: fluid phonon additional to the phonon and phason for solid quasicrystals, to quantitatively describe the dynamics of soft-matter quasicrystals. The general governing equations and the solutions of the dynamics evolution on the distribution, deformation and motion of the new phase are studied, which reveal quite distinguishing dynamic behavior with those of conventional fluids and solid quasicrystals. Some applications are introduced, which show this is an important field of new materials and materials science.

Abstract:In this paper the latest research progress in the three dimensional bulk nanocrystalline materials is smumarized. Both the ordinary preparation methods and novel fabrication techniques for bulk nanocrystalline materials are overviewed. A comprehensive comparison is made between these synthesis methods,with respective advantages and disadvantages and the corresponding applied materials system being pointed out. The various property perfor-mances of three dimensional bulk nanocrystalline materials are presented. Finally,the future research direction and the prospect of potential applications for the three dimensional bulk nanocrystalline materials are proposed.

Abstract:An in situ bulk Zr58Al9Ni9Cu14Nb10 quasicrystal-glass composite has been fabricated by means of copper mould casting. The microstructure and constituent phases of the alloy composite have been analyzed by using X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Icosahedral quasicrystals were found to be the majority phase and the grain size is in half-μm scale. In between the I-phase grains is a glassy phase. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy revealed that the as-cast alloys were pore-free. The microhardness of the composite is about 5.90±0.30GPa. The room temperature compression stress–true strain curve exhibits a 2% elastic deformation up to failure, and a maximum fracture stress of 1850MPa at a quasi-static loading rate of 4.4×10−4s−1. The mechanical property is superior to the early developed quasicrystal alloys, and is comparable to Zr-based bulk metallic glasses and their nanocomposites. The quasicrystal-glass composite exhibits basically a brittle fracture mode at room temperature.

Abstract:Quasicrystals are of interest because of their unique nonperiodic structures and physical properties. Motivated by naturally occurring icosahedral AlCuFe- and decagonal AlNiFe-phases hosted in a shocked meteorite, different laboratories have undertaken a series of shock recovery experiments to understand their formation mechanism. Shock experiments generate a complex series of processes and conditions, including a near-instantaneous excursion to high pressure and high temperature, large shear stresses, local melting, rapid decompression, fast quenching and post-shock annealing. This highly dynamic scenario offers a very useful but imperfect tool for exploring the stability of novel alloys, such as quasicrystals. So far, all the shock-synthesized quasicrystals differ considerably in composition from any thermodynamically stable or metastable quasicrystals synthesized by metallurgical techniques at low pressure, leaving plenty of questions to be answered about their formation conditions and their nucleation and growth mechanisms occurring during shock experiments. In this Perspective, we summarize the previous studies of shock-synthesized quasicrystals and discuss the advantages and difficulties caused by the experimental complexity. We also propose a few directions for future experiments to better control the shock conditions and understand the properties of quasicrystals.

Abstract:Quasicrystals have been observed in a variety of materials ranging from metal alloys to block copolymers and represent an "intermediate" form of matter between crystals and amorphous materials (glasses and liquids) in that their structural and dynamical properties can not readily described in terms of conventional solid-state models of liquids and solids. In the present work, we present a comprehensive analysis of basic thermodynamic and dynamic properties of quasicrystals to better understand the nature of the atomic motion underlying diffusion and structural relaxation in these materials. As our model system, we investigate a dodecagonal quasicrystal using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations in two dimensions (2D), subject to periodic boundary conditions. We observe a two-stage relaxation dynamics in the self-intermediate scattering function $F_s(k,t)$ of our quasicrystal material involving a fast $\beta$-relaxation on a ps timescale and $\alpha$ relaxation process having a highly temperature dependent relaxation time whose activation energy varies in concert with the extent of string-like collective motion. Multi-step relaxation of the intermediate scattering function and string-like collective atomic motion have similarly been observed ubiquitously in glass-forming liquids at low temperatures and in crystalline materials at elevated temperatures where structural relaxation and diffusion are both non-Arrhenius. After examining the dynamics of our quasi-crystalline material in great detail, we conclude that its dynamics more closely resemble observations on metallic glass-forming liquids, in qualitative accord with previous neutron scattering studies.

Abstract:Compared with the normal materials with the same composition, nanocrystalline materials possess much higher strength but lower ductility. Nanocrystalline materials can exhibit superplasticity at lower temperature and higher deforming rate. Based on the research results up to date, it is suggested that some real properties of the nanocrystalline materials might have not been understood due to the defects introduced during materials preparation and treatment followed. So further study is necessary. In the papaer, the mechanical properties and deformation mechanism of nanocrystalline materials are reviewed and the developing tendency is discussed.

Abstract:Photonic crystals are a new type of synthetic microstructure materials which have periodical refraction index variations in the space and produce photonic band gaps similar to electronic band gaps produced by the crystal potentials of semiconductors. In recent years, intensive research efforts have been devoted to the studies of photonic crystals due to their unique abilities to manipulate and control photon behaviors. It presents a brief introduction to the photonic crystal and structure characteristics. Some major fabrication methods are demonstrated and various applications of photonic crystals, such as photonic crystal fiber, photonic crystal waveguide, photonic crystal laser, are also discussed.
