Abstract:This work addresses an enrichment technique for the three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) analysis of a vertical drain foundation because (1) 1D and 2D simulations are insufficient to integrally describe the consolidation behaviour and (2) drains are small both in spacing and size, resulting in enormous computational costs for a traditional 3D FE analysis. Based on the idea of the semi-analytical finite element method (FEM), which combines general FEM with the high accuracy of a closed-form solution, a new spatial element that contains a drain well and its neighbouring smear zone is presented. This new combined element is depicted by eight global independent nodes and two local dependent nodes, and a classical analytical theory is introduced to set up the relationship between the two kinds of nodes. Because permeability diversity between the drain and the smear zone is considered, both the effects of smearing and well resistance are taken into account with the composite element method (CEM). A detailed derivation of the CEM is performed using the weighted residual method. The accuracy of the proposed method is validated with a totally penetrating, single-drain ground analysis for seven calculation conditions. Additionally, the proposed CEM saves 1/4–1/2 mesh elements and helps to avoid slender elements for the FEM analysis of the drained foundation.
A Method for Determining Critical Thickness of Base Soil of Foundation Pit Subjected to Confined Water

Abstract:The change of pore water pressure and soil effective stress in foundation pit base, subjected to fast increase of confined water pressure due to sudden rise of the influent river during flood peak, have been analyzed. Based on soil permeability and its two damage mechanisms (i.e. tensile failure and shear failure), a new method for determining critical thickness of base plate of foundation pit is presented based on elastic theory. The new method is compared with traditional method to calculate the critical thickness of base soil of foundation pit by case study. Results show that the new method considering indices c(u), phi(u), and the size of foundation pit base, is more reasonable than the traditional method. However, the results calculated by the method in this paper reduce to the results by traditional method as for highly permeable soil like sand.

Abstract:Taking Yunleng reservoir for example,based on three row of actual saturation lines of the dam,the elasticity theory in temperature field is applied to the dambody 3-D seepage analysis,and through the inversion analysis,the permeability coefficient in dam body is obtained,then saturation lines under other operating conditions are calculated,so it provides the basis for the dam stability analysis.

Abstract:The normal use of the finite element method in the analysis of earth and rock-fill dams involves troublesome modifications of the finite element mesh. In the present paper it is pointed out that in problems of steady seepage it is not necessary to determine in the iteration process the entire free surface, but only the elevation of the release point. It is shown by several examples that the proposed method can simplify the seepage analysis to a certain degree, and also give satisfactory results.
Virtual Node Method for Seepage with Free Surface Problem

Abstract:A new fixed mesh method, named virtual node method, is put forward for seepage with free surface problem. In this method, the elements crossing the free surface are divided into several triangular or quadrangular domains, each domain is completely above or below the iterating free surface. The element transmit matrix can be integrated domain by domain, but without the domains below the free surface for no contribution. The elements, which are above or below the free surface,are treated as a special case, one domain occupies the whole element, and only the elements below free surface are concerned. The transmit matrix of element with overflow boundary is modified to fit the boundary condition change. Comparing with other fixed mesh method, the proposed method can describe transmit matrix exactly and no new node or element is generated, the overflow boundary is treated in element, no mesh boundary conditions is changed. The case studies show that the numerical results are in agreement with that of analytical solution.

Abstract:It remains challenging to determine the unknown free surface in three dimensional unconfined seepage in earth dams. A number of iterations are frequently required which make the problem computationally expensive. In the present research, a weak form quadrature element formulation is presented for three dimensional analysis of unconfined seepage which is an extension of the recently established method for two dimensional seepage problems. "Free points" are introduced by the interpolation of which the free surfaces are smoothly approximated. Grid lines are constructed in the element and the "free points" are confined to the lines when updated. An interpolatory scheme for locating the exit points is proposed. Formulations and procedures of the method are given in detail. Results of numerical examples are compared with available analytical solutions and numerical solutions in the literature and agreement is reached demonstrating the efficiency and reliability of the present formulation. Abstract:Siphon drainage using inclined borehole and 4 mm inner diameter pipes is an efficient and stable measure for long-term landslide drainage. In order to compare alternative drainage arrangements more efficiently, a numerical method is proposed for siphon drainage process simulation. The novelty of this method is to simulate the dynamic process of siphon drainage by a series of iterative seepage analyses. The whole drainage process is divided into many small time steps and each one corresponds to an independent seepage analysis. The iterative operation is fully automated by reading and rewriting the calculation document with Python code. The siphon flow rate in each analysis is determined by the total head at the siphon pipe inlet obtained from the previous analysis result. An empirical formula based on experimental data is used for flow rate calculation. SEEP3D is adopted to perform the three-dimensional seepage analysis. BUILD3D along with computer-aided design software is used to build the three-dimensional model with a realistic topographic surface. The proposed method is illustrated and validated with a case, the Shaqiucun landslide, China. A parameter study is carried out and the influence of parameter setting on the drainage effect is discussed.

Abstract:Parallel 2D finite element method for computations of free surface seepage flows is presented in this paper. Computations are carried out by using a cluster of PCs under control of Linux operating system and an MPI library. Preconditioned conjugate gradient method combined with element-by-element strategy is used for solving algebraic equations to reduce storage space and execution time. In order to improve the performance of the cluster, several techniques such as pre-processing and post-processing parallelism and load balance are used. The performance of simulating the free surface seepage flow through a earth dam is analyzed. The experimental results show that the model presented herein not only is reasonable and feasible, but also has expandability and scalability when the large-scale free surface seepage flow through projects is simulated.

Abstract:To avoid the disadvantage of the previous fixed mesh method (FEM) for free surface (FS) seepage calculation and analysis, a method, called the element-free method (EFM), for seepage is presented. Making use of the mutual independence of the elements and the nodes, EFM can solve the modifications problem of the surface FE mesh with successive iterations, and make the element fixed throughout the iterations.

Abstract:This paper describes the discarding element method of 3D finite element seepage analysis, established corresponding computer program SYSDQ according to the concept of discarding element method, and uses this program to carry out the analysis of one example. The analysis results showed that the calculation results basically tally with the test results. The discarding element method to determine the free surface location could make up insufficiency of the traditional fixed grid method and could ensure the convergence and accuracy of calculation results, which could be used for reference for the similar researches.

Abstract:Implemented, based on practical engineering projects, is a statistical analysis of strata soil characteristics and geological columns sampled from the main embankment of Yangtse Rive in southern Jingzhou zone of China. Furthermore, it was verified under Kolomogorov-Smirnov theory that this assumption, namely, the statistical hypothesis of Gaussian probability distribution for random permeability tensors of soils to be submitted into the stochastic seepage field simulation would be accepted by the statistical testing. By the help of numerical analysis for stochastic seepage fields simulations using three dimensional finite element method as well as the rationality of simulated stochastic results, investigated were various statistical characteristics and random natures in random seepage fields of the main embankment of Yangtse Rive in southern Jingzhou zone of China. Meanwhile, the developed model was also examined through statistical testing. Especially, as a stochastic boundary condition, the random variation of upstream and downstream water level was taken into account of three-dimensional finite element model in practical analysis for the random seepage field simulations, by which, it has been realized deeply to describe disturbed effects of the boundary randomness due to variability of downstream and upstream water level over variabilities of simulated results presented by vector series of the random seepage field. Furthermore, the function of some safeguards to set up against the seepage problem, such as sheet-pile breakwater and catch-water, as the turbulence of complex boundary condition together with the effects of variability of soil permeability has been analyzed for description of influence of them on the hydraulic potential distributed in the random seepage field and the random evolution of stochastic seepage field under these comprehensive aspects has also been compared with the result obtained by determinate analysis for the corresponding steady seepage field problem. Philosophy deduced in this paper presents the necessity, feasibility and practicability of employing stochastic studies in seepage field problems. Meanwhile, sensitivities of random seepage field hydraulic gradient and downstream exit height were studied upon the variation of permeability and boundary conditions of the main embankment of Yangtse Rive in southern Jingzhou zone of China, by which, broadened is the research domain on seepage field evolution under uncertain numerical coverage.

Abstract:There are many practical problems in the rapid development of the concrete face rockfill dam, which mainly focus on a large number of cracks and extrusion breakages in the face slab caused by temperature-induced stress, shrinkage stress, deformation of dam and other reasons, which eventually lead to leakage, threatening the safety of the dam. To solve this problem, the three-dimensional finite element analysis method is combined with the block equivalent continuum method to calculate the three-dimensional seepage field of the dam area, in order to study the seepage characteristics of numerous and unevenly distributed cracks in the concrete face rockfill dam; then, the corresponding head distribution and seepage characteristics, including the phreatic line, the hydraulic gradient and the seepage discharge, were obtained. The findings of this paper validate the accuracy and reliability of the block equivalent continuum method. It not only meets the requirements of simulation accuracy, but also can obtain the characteristics of the local seepage field near the crack. At the same time, it greatly simplifies the finite element model and significantly improves the efficiency of seepage calculation. This method provides a reference for the seepage analysis of similar projects.

Analytical solutions to seepage field of underwater twin parallel tunnels

Abstract:The previous studies have made some research achievements on the seepage field of a single tunnel, but the researches on twin parallel tunnel are seldom.Based on the Darcy's law and the laws of conservation of mass, the problem of steady seepage field of twin parallel tunnels is solved using the conformal mapping technique and the method of superposition.The analytical solutions of hydraulic head distribution and water inflow of tunnels are obtained.The software COMSOL is used to verify the analytical solutions, and a good agreement is found between the two methods.Incorporating examples, discussion is given about the effects of tunnel distance on the seepage field of twin parallel tunnels, the hydraulic head distribution outside the linings and the tunnel water inflow.It is found that when the twin tunnels are simplified as a single tunnel, the hydraulic head around tunnels and the tunnel inflows would be overestimated.And the phenomenon is more obvious in case of small tunnel distances.

Abstract:Based on the patterns of the hydraulic head outside the lining layer obtained from numerical simulation, a new boundary condition for the tunnel is proposed that the hydraulic head appears sinusoidal distribution on the lining’s external circumference. The analytical solutions about the hydraulic head and water ingress are derived rigorously, which could consider the effect of the lining property such as the lining thickness and permeability. The new solution is compared with another three classic analytical solutions in the existent literature. It is found that the traditional assumption that the lining layer is an equipotential surface could overestimate the water ingress especially when the tunnel is buried shallowly.

Abstract:Considering the material non-uniformity and time-varying mechanics performance in seepage development of soil levee, the particle flow code (PFC) method and the fast Lagrangian analysis of continua (FLAC) approach are combined to implement the numerical analysis and evaluation for seepage behavior and its control effect in soil levee engineering. Based on the coupling characteristics of particle and water in soil levee, a PFC-based numerical simulation method of seepage development is introduced. To improve the accuracy and efficiency of above method, the soil particle generation technology according to soil grading curve is presented. An approach, which refers to geotechnical centrifuge test and similarity principle, is developed to build the scale model of prototype levee. The calculation restriction of PFC method, which is integrated into FLAC tool, is broken. Lastly, the numerical simulation for seepage behavior of one actual levee engineering with seepage control measures is implemented by the proposed method. The seepage control mechanisms of selected measures are analyzed. The macroscopic and mesoscopic effects of selected measures on different levee foundations are evaluated. It is indicated that the seepage control effect can be described more finely with the average coordination number and the vertical effective stress which are obtained by the proposed numerical method.

Abstract:This paper presents a numerical model of 3D seepage flow for non-uniform medium. The governing equations of saturated-unsaturated flow are introduced and the finite element method is applied to discretize them in space. The techniques of determining the seepage faces and computing the discharge rate through a specified section are proposed. Therefore, this model describes processes in relatively smaller space and time units. It has been tested and implemented in the research of complex 3D seepage flow. The results reveal that both the seepage flow rate and the level of groundwater are affected by the scale of impervious wall.

Abstract:Piping is a dangerous situation of levees in flood period.This paper proposes a new method that uses pipe flow theory for the piping channel,and conventional seepage theory for the other region.At their common boundary the two regions share water head and discharge rate with opposite sign.The coupling mechanism of seepage-pipe flows allows this method to simulate the advancing pattern of piping.Critical flow rate is evaluated by the theories of sediment incipient motion for the cases of horizontal and vertical piping channels,and a threshold velocity is used to determine whether piping channel advances in the erosion course.The proposed method is on a better physical ground than traditional finite element method,while it induces little extra computational cost.
