Abstract:Drawing on an analogy between discourse and syntactic trees, this paper chooses 359 Wall Street Journal articles with multiple paragraphs from the Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST) Discourse Treebank, and converts each discourse tree into three additional dependency ones, at discourse, paragraph and sentence levels, with exclusively elementary discourse units of clauses, sentences and paragraphs, respectively. It empirically tests and visually presents the genre-specific "summary + details" or "inverted pyramid" structuring of news discourse. It further extends the idea of inverted pyramid structuring to the paragraph and sentence levels. It proves that the body of the report also has a similar schematic top-down installment organization with macro-propositions on top. It also visually and statistically presents the rhetorical structures at sentence level, which differ to some extent from grammatical structures. Operated in line with the compositionality criterion and hierarchy principle of RST, the converted trees provide unique analytical advantages and constitute new research prospects.

Abstract:Reading English news will help the readers to improve the capabilities of application,but it's not easy to have a good understand of the English news.Firstly,one should go on reading without halting in case that there are some new words in the news.Secondly,one must understand its headline and lead.The style and structure of a news story help the readers to catch the meaning in its form,and what's more,the language characteristics of the headlines,the characteristics of vocabulary,the grammatical characteristics of the English news help the readers to read more smoothly and understand it more accurately.

Abstract:Since the emergence of newspaper,the headline has been the necessity of a news report.The Newspaper headline which takes the crucial part in a news report has been given the responsibility to capture readers,especially in the environment of highly intense competition of this industry.Even with the application of high technology in the news industry,the significance of the headline is enormously strengthened rather than weakened.On the one hand,the mission of the headline determines its significance.And on the other,its characteristics help to achieve the responsibility.Therefore the particular language adopted in the headline,namely 'headlinese',must contain certain features which could appeal readers’ attention.This paper will focus on the characteristics of the English newspaper headline and find out how it captures readers.

Due to the differences between English and Chinese in cultural background, rhetoric tradition, and linguistic expression, news translation is confronted with the challenge of overcoming language barriers in information transmission. The headline is the soul of news and determines the attention of news. Mastering the headline information can help readers effectively understand the gist of the news. Therefore, when translating English news headlines, we should first understand the characteristics of the headlines and apply translation strategies in a targeted way. By analyzing the characteristics of news headlines, this paper studies the principles and strategies of translation of English news headlines.

Abstract:As the main means of transmitting financial information, financial news has been delivered to people daily with different carriers such as financial news websites, financial pages of major newspapers, and so on. Language is an important tool for newspapers to spread the news effectively. The use of language and its characters in newspapers of the party plays an exemplary and guiding role for the reader. For the deficiency that most studies focus on English financial reports, this study is carried out to investigate the characteristics of its language use in People’s Daily. The reasons for choosing topics, the current research status of economic news, and the language characteristics of economic news of People’s Daily are investigated by using the method of text analysis and the combination of description and interpretation. The characteristics of words, sentence patterns, and rhetorical devices are also explored.

Abstract:Automatically generating macro research reports from economic news is an important yet challenging task. As we all know, it requires the macro analysts to write such reports within a short period of time after the important economic news are released. This motivates our work, i.e., using AI techniques to save manual cost. The goal of the proposed system is to generate macro research reports as the draft for macro analysts. Essentially, the core challenge is the long text generation issue. To address this issue, we propose a novel deep learning technique based approach which includes two components, i.e., outline generation and macro research report generation.For the model performance evaluation, we first crawl a large news-to-report dataset and then evaluate our approach on this dataset, and the generated reports are given for the subjective evaluation.

Abstract:What matters for a learner of English for academic purposes is to possess the ability to present results and achievements in international top journals. The ability is related to degrees of informality, vocabulary richness, and lexical complexity in academic writing. This study takes Chinese master degree candidates and advanced writers as research objects and concentrates on two research questions: (1) To what extent do Chinese master degree candidates and advanced writers differ in the use of informal features in their writings? (2) In what ways do Chinese master degree candidates and advanced writers differ in vocabulary choices? The results are based on studying two datasets of the research objects. However, our results show that there is a complex picture for each informality indicator. Finally yet importantly, advanced writers show a higher level of vocabulary richness and complexity.

Abstract:This study makes a Critical Discourse Analysis of the ecological and non-ecological features of Chinese English news reports and holds that news reports ultimately serves the interest groups it represents and cannot get rid of its ideological influence. To achieve this, with Fairclough’s three-dimensional model as the theoretical framework and from the perspective of ecolinguistics, this study, based on 29 English news reports on the northward migration of Asian elephants from China Daily and by building up a small corpus, combining qualitative and quantitative research methods, aims to analyze the selected corpus with the help of AntConc 3.5.9 (windows) 2020. Finally, through the analysis of text analysis, discourse interpretation, and social interpretation, it is found that Chinese and English news reports have ecological and non-ecological features. At the same time, English news reports in China also try to express and build a harmonious relationship between man and nature. It reflects that China follows the ecological order concept of “harmonious co-existence between man and nature” and the ecological basis of “man and nature are the community of life”.

Abstract:Multimodal discourse analysis is the analysis of different symbolic modes within a text, which breaks through many limitations of traditional discourse analysis to a great extent. This paper takes the visual grammar of Kress and Leeuwen as the theoretical framework, which gives a good explanation of the reproducing meaning, interactive meaning and composition meaning of image discourse, which is also suitable for the analysis of news picture discourse. This paper expounds how other symbolic resources interact with each other, so as to construct a complete text with linguistic symbols, and then convey more social interactive meaning. The results show that visual grammar is feasible and operational in the analysis of multimodal news texts. The background and text of news discourse can be effectively supplemented and explained, and it is of great significance to improve readers' pictures’ reading ability.

Abstract:Based on the theory of speech function and mood, mood metaphor and multimodality in systemic functional linguistics, and analyzes 20 award-winning works in the “2022 Excellent Works Collection and Exchange Activity of Foreign Language Microlecture” of China Foreign Language Microlecture Network, aiming to explore the types of multimodal teacher-student exchange structure in English microlecture. This study shows that there are two main exchange structures in the analyzed corpus: teachers' self-questioning, teacher-student question-and-answer. The results of this study are helpful for English teachers to understand the characteristics and advantages of different exchange structures, improve students' interest in English learning, and create an efficient English microlecture classroom.

Abstract:As environmental topics have become the focus of attention in recent years, this study conducts a study of transitivity system on news reports about Fukushima nuclear-contaminated water in the English version of People’s Daily from the perspective of ecological discourse analysis, aiming to find out how the process of transitivity is distributed in news reports about Fukushima nuclear-contaminated water in Japan, as well as what kind of ecological awareness is reflected in news reports. By manual selection of the corpus with the help of UAM Corpus Tool 6, the study found that the proportion of material process in such reports is high, while the proportion of behavioral process is low. The study aims to call on people to raise awareness of environmental protection, promote harmonious coexistence and sustainable development of human beings and nature, and protect the common home of the earth.

Abstract:Before we are able to understand the function of citizens news,it is necessary to investigate citizens news as a collective action instead of an individual one,to transcend the representation of citizen news in specific cases,and to observe the significance of citizen news practice in its entirety at the macro-level. Judged from observations of the reality,there are mainly three typical relationships involved in citizens’ news activities: the first refers to the transmitting network composed of netizens’ social networks; the second refers to the leagues netizens have formed for various purposes; the third refers to the power division shaped naturally in the process of citizens’ news action. These are also three mechnisms which affect citizens’ news activities. The first relationship may be understood by means of the theory of social network; the second one may be investigated from the angle of self-organization; the research focus of the third one consists in the formation of the stratum of leaders with their own ideas and their influence.

Abstract:The paper comments on the latest research of information structure ,especially on the study of Mary Dalrymlpe & Irina Nikolaeva(2011) .Referring to the factor of discourse ,the article thinks that there are much more complicated situation in the expressions about focus and topic of Chi‐nese objects ,and also provides some pieces of evidence to prove that there are subtopics in the location of ordinary Chinese objects .There are some important constraints on the interface between informa‐tion structure and syntactic structure of Chinese .By elementary investigation , the article supposes that there is one unmarked hierarchical pattern of salient degree of topics in Chinese .T he nominal syn‐tactic elements all have the potential function of topicality .Under the situation of unmarkedness ,the elements of higher topicality are arranged ahead ,and relatively the ones of lower topicality are ar‐ranged behind .Finally ,the article proposes one series of problems about Chinese objects that should be explored in future .

Abstract:This research aims to discover the discourse features of English electronic news reports (EENRs) on environmental sustainability which are lexical, grammatical and textual features in light of critical discourse analysis (CDA) by Fairclough [3]. A combination of mixed research methods was applied with the qualitative method including a descriptive analysis and the support of the quantitative approach. 69 EENRs on the topic concerned were collected from the UN News website. The study results reveal that words and expressions related to the topic of environmental sustainability, formal words, content words and metaphors are typical lexical features of the discourse. The transitivity, passive and active voices, modes of sentences, relational modality, pronouns, expressive modality and cohesion are also recorded as grammatical features of the discourse.
