Abstract:Objective To investigate the correlation of hypertension duration with asymptomatic cerebral arterial pathologic changes through transcranial Doppler sonography (TCDS) in patients with hypertension. Methods 254 Patients with primary hypertension admitted into the hospital were divided into 3 groups: the duration of illness was less than 5 years, 5-10 years and more than 10 years. Stroke or stroke history, other intracranial diseases and diabetes meliitus were all excluded. The pathologic changes of cerebral arteries were evaluated by TCD and the results were analyzed with SPSS10.0 on the correlation with the hypertension duration. Results No correlations of hypertension duration with mean peak blood flow velocity (Vp) of all intracranial cerebral arteries were found. There was no difference in total TCD-RAAs between the group of less than 5 years duration and the group of 5- 10 years duration, however, the group of more than 10 years duration showed significant higher TCD-RAA than the other two. Except for anterior and posterior cerebral artery, the TCD-RAAs of main intracranial cerebral arteries were linearly correlated with hypertension duration. Among them, the rates of elevated blood flow velocity in middle cerebral artery and internal carotid artery, which mainly represents stenosis, were most obviously correlated with hypertension duration. Conclusion Hypertension duration is a key factor for asymptomatic cerebral arterial pathologic-changes in patients with hypertension.
