A Systematic Review of the Correlation Between HPV Infection and Salivary Gland Tumors

Abstract:Objective This study was performed to explore the association between human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and salivary gland tumors (SGT).Methods A comprehensive literature search for relevant studies was performed using PubMed,Web of Science,Cochrane Library,EMbase,CNKI,CBM,Wanfang and Chongqing VIP Databases.The association between HPV infection and SGT was estimated by the pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95％ confidence intervals (95％ CIs).Statistical analyses were performed using Stata 11.0 software.Fixed or random effects model were used to calculate ORs and 95％ CIs according to heterogeneity.In addition,publication bias was assessed through funnel plot analysis.Results Eight eligible studies that met the criteria were included in meta-analysis with 142 malignant SGT patients,220 benign SGT patients and 37 healthy control subjects.In this meta-analysis,the results showed that the prevalence of HPV in malignant SGT patients was significantly higher than benign SGT patients (OR=2.92,95％ CI 1.57-5.40,P＜0.001).The prevalence of HPV in SGT patients was significantly higher than healthy control subjects (OR=19.24,95％ CI4.08-90.79,P＜0.001).Conclusions This meta-analysis showed that HPV infection was associated with SGT attack and might increase the risk of malignant SGT.However,additional high quality of studies with larger sample sizes are needed to do further research on the relationship between HPV and SGT.
