Abstract:AbstractElectro-optic (E-O) polymers have drawn great interest in recent years because of their potential applications in photonics devices such as high speed modulators and switches, optical data storage and information processing1–2. In order to have suitable materials for device fabrication, it is essential to design and develop polymeric material systems (active and passive polymers) with matched refractive indices, large E-O coefficients, good temporal and photochemical stability3–8 The E-O response of an active polymer commonly arises from the electric field induced alignment of its second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophore, either doped as a guest/host system or covalently bonded as a side-chain. Because of the strong interaction among the electric dipoles, the poled structure is in a meta-stable state; the poled NLO chromophores which possess large dipole moment will tend to relax back to the randomly oriented state. As a result, the stability of the poled structure strongly depends on the rigidity of the overall material system. As it might be expected, the continuous increases of the rigidity and Tg of poled polymers imposes constraints on the selection of suitable chromophores that can survive the hightemperature poling and processing conditions. To circumvent this problem, we have developed a series of chromophores that possess conformation-locked geometry and perfluoro-dicyanovinylsubstituted electron-accepting group which demonstrate both good thermal stabilty and nonlinearity. This paper provides a brief review of these highly efficient and thermally stable chromophores and polymers for device applications.

Abstract:Recently,much attention has been paid to the development of photorefractive materials for their potential applications in optical data storage,image processing and phase conjugation.In this paper,the characteristics and applications of photorefractive materials are briefly reviewed.Photorefractive properties,recent progress and development trend of inorganic crystals,polymers and inorganic-organic hybrid materials are discussed in detail.Research significance and advantage of novel inorganic-organic hybrid photorefrative materials are summarized,and the prospect is forecast.

Abstract:Holographic polymer-dispersed liquid crystal. (HPDLC) is a kind of switchable volume holography. It can be manufactured according to the photo-initiated polymerization-induced phase separation. HPDLC is composed of parallel, periodic polymer-rich and liquid crystal-rich planes. The diffraction efficiency can be modulated by the application of electric field. HPDLC devices are potentially useful for optical communication, information storage and display. How to increase the diffraction efficiency is the key to application. We investigated the dependence of diffraction efficiency on the refractive index of the polymer, exposure intensity, liquid crystal loading and temperature. The best conditions were found to make the diffraction properties optimized. Now the highest diffraction efficiency was 80.2%. The HPDLC morphologies were also observed and analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM).
Photorefractive Polymer with Self-orientated Polarization

Abstract:Fairly strong photo-refraction was observed of the PVK-PBA/DRI/INF composite polymer,prepqred by vacuum hot-pressing plus vapor dispersion,in the two-beam coupling and four-wave mixing diffraction measurement with no external electric field applied.Second-harmonic generation induced by laser irradiation was also observed.To account for our observations,we propose a self-orientated polarization mechanism,in which charge separation induced by laser irradiation results in formation of the push-electron and pull-electron radicals at the two ends of a DRI molecule.And interaction of these radicals and the traps leads to polarization of a DRI molecule and the build-up of an internal periodic electric field,which is responsible for the photo-refraction.The holography storage with the composite polymer was also performed with good results.

Abstract:Photodeformable polymer materials have a far influence in the fields of flexibility and intelligence. The stimulation energy is converted into mechanical energy through molecular synergy. Among kinds of photodeformable polymer materials, liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) photodeformable materials have been a hot topic in recent years. Chromophores such as azobenzene, α-cyanostilbene, and 9,10-dithiopheneanthracene have been widely used in LCP, which are helpful for designing functional molecules to increase the penetration depth of light to change physical properties. Due to the various applications of photodeformable polymer materials, there are many excellent reports in intelligent field. In this review, we have systematized LCP containing azobenzene into 3 categories depending on the degree of crosslinking liquid crystalline elastomers, liquid crystalline networks, and linear LCPs. Other structural, typical polymer materials and their applications are discussed. Current issues faced and future directions to be developed for photodeformable polymer materials are also summarized.

Abstract:The photorefractive properties of PVK-based polymeric composites doped with three liquid crystals, 4OCB (4-pertyloxy-4 '-cyanobiphenyl), 5OCB (4-pentyloxy-4'-cyanobiphenyl) and 8OCB (4-octyloxy-4'-cyanobiphenyl), were investigated by using the two-beam coupling experiment at 633mm. A gain coefficient over 34 cm(-1) at an applied field of 60 V/mum was observed. Among the three materials, the 8OCB-doped composite demonstrated a stronger orientational effect and the influence on charge field became apparent.

Abstract:The refractive index modulation (Δn) of photopolymers is a key performance indicator in determining their application potentials in holographic optical elements (HOEs). In this study, four fluoroelastomers (HT-HS, HT-F185, HT-L80, and HT-F197) containing hydroxyl groups as active functional groups are selected to construct low refractive index host matrices with isocyanates. Through a combination of them with high refractive index monomers, a series of transparent photopolymers are obtained. Among them, one containing 16 wt % HT-F197 has the highest sensitivity, which can record a transmission volume holographic grating (VHG) with high resolution (3600 lines/mm) and diffraction efficiency (95.76%) under exposure of a 532 nm laser. Its Δn is up to 0.054. Furthermore, a reflection VHG with high performance (4900 lines/mm resolution and 92.32% diffraction efficiency) can also be achieved. After photobleaching, its transmittance within 400–800 nm reaches 96.21%, showing great potential in the fabrication of transparent HOEs.

Abstract:The organic photorefractive (PR) materials and devices have attracted much interest due to the wide potential applications. In this talk, we report the recent study on PR materials and PR physical property in our group. To overcome the disadvantages (e.g. instability and critical environment requirement) of the multi-component PR composite, two novel three-component PR systems were fabricated based on a series of azo dyes and liquid crystals as both EO chromophore and plasticizer, respectively, and the excellent PR performances were obtained. More recent, mono-component PR sample based on a fully functional polymer, poly(9-(2-ethyl-hexyl)-3-[2-(4-methanesulfonyl-phenyl)vinyl]-9H-carbazole), was reported to exhibit two-beam coupling coefficient more than 100 cm−1 at 632.8 nm wavelength at applied electric field of 100 V/μm. The fast response time was obtained from composite doped with β,β-diacetyl-4-methoxylstyrene (DAMST). Besides, DAMST also is the more suitable selection to operate at short wavelength.

Abstract:The photorefractive effect is a phenomenon in which the refractive index changes at the interference fringe, forming a diffraction grating (hologram). Photorefractive materials are composed of a combination of electro-optical materials and photoconductive compounds. Liquid crystals mixed with a photoconductive compound are useful as photorefractive materials because of their large birefringence and fluidity. Various applications are expected, such as amplifying optical signals, dynamic holograms, and Fourier optical elements. This article describes the development of high-performance photorefractive materials using liquid crystals and their applications in laser ultrasonics.

Abstract:. The photorefractivity of a photorefractive composite consisting of poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) doped with a non-room-temperature liquid crystal, 4-butyloxy-4’-cyanobiphenyl (4OCB), and C 60 was studied by means of measuring the two-beam coupling coefficients. The results show that the photorefractivity is enhanced by phase separation.

Abstract:The holographic characteristics of a novel greenlight-sensitive photopolymer with high diffraction efficiency and refractive index modulation are discussed. The influence of the exposure, recording intensity, intensity ratio of reference and object wave on the diffraction efficiency are studied. The shortage to the high-density recording of over exposure is displayed.

Abstract:Photochromic polymer is defined as a series of materials based on photochromic units in polymer chains, which produces reversible color changes under irradiation with a particular wavelength. Currently, as the research progresses, it shows increasing potential applications in various fields, such as anti-counterfeiting, information storage, super-resolution imaging, and logic gates. However, there is a paucity of published reviews on the topic of photochromic polymers. Herein, this review discusses and summarizes the research progress and prospects of such materials, mainly summarizing the basic mechanisms, classification, and applications of azobenzene, spiropyran, and diarylethene photochromic polymers. Moreover, 3-dimensional (3D) printable photochromic polymers are worthy to be summarized specifically because of its innovative approach for practical application; meanwhile, the developing 3D printing technology has shown increasing potential opportunities for better applications. Finally, the current challenges and future directions of photochromic polymer materials are summarized.

Abstract:Polymer dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) have kindled a spark of interest because of their unique characteristic of electrically controlled switching. However, some issues including high operating voltage, low contrast ratio and poor mechanical properties are hindering their practical applications. To overcome these drawbacks, some measures were taken such as molecular structure optimization of the monomers and liquid crystals, modification of PDLC and doping of nanoparticles and dyes. This review aims at detailing the recent advances in the process, preparations and applications of PDLCs over the past six years.

Abstract:The bright, dark and grey soliton solutions for optical wave evolution equations are presented in photorefractive polymer under a steady-state condition. The polarization property of these different soliton states and the dependence of the width of these polymeric solitons on external bias field are discussed in detail.

Abstract:Polymer-templated nematic liquid crystal (LC) holographic gratings via visible-light recording are presented in the presence of reactive mesogens (RMs) and rose bengal (RB)/N-phenylglycine (NPG) photoinitiation systems. By optimizing the concentration of RMs in the polymer-templated LC gratings, the template after being washed out can be refilled with suitable fluidic components. And the dependence of the first-order diffraction efficiency (DE) on the concentration of RB and NPG molecules was discussed in detail. The polarization-dependency of diffraction properties was also investigated. It is revealed that the diffractive behaviors of polymer-templated LC gratings can be dynamically reconfigured by varying temperature or refilling organic solutions with different refractive index (RI). Furthermore, the potential for recording holograms using green light is explored. We expect that the reconfigurable polymer-templated LC gratings fabricated via visible-light interference would provide a facile approach to regulate the diffraction properties of holographic gratings apart from electric field, thus paving a way towards a class of novel anti-counterfeiting devices.

Abstract:We present an experimental study on the optical polarization properties of the phenanthrenequinone-doped poly(methyl methacrylate) photopolymer materials. We discuss the diffraction efficiency with different weight ratios of phenanthrenequinone that was dissolved in the materials. In addition, we observe the diffraction efficiency difference between polarization holography and traditional holography.

Abstract:Holographic storage is considered a promising successor to currently available optical storage technologies. Enabling significant gains in both data transfer rates and storage densities,holographic storage has gained a great deal of recent attention.One of the primary challenges in the advancement of holographic storage has heen the development of suitable recording materials.In this article,we provide a brief introduction to holographic storage and its potential advantages over current technologies,outline the requirements for recording materials,and survey candidate materials. We end by highlighting recent progress in photopolymer materials,which can satisfy the requirements of practical holographic data storage systems.

The combination of photoresponsive properties of azo polymers hierarchical supramolecular characteristics and functions. and structures of liquid crystalline block copolymers leads to their unique Research in this field has generated a number of new block copolymers and recorded some newly discovered properties of the copolymers. In this review, a few examples were chosen to discuss the recent developments in this area with emphasis on the photoinduced morphological changes and holographic properties of this type of polymers and materials.
