Abstract:Poetry translation is a formidable task for the difficulty of achieving unity of form and content. This thesis analyzes two English versions of Bai Juyi’s Song of a Pipa Player from the perspective of translation aesthetics of Liu Miqing, one is Xu Yuanchong’s and the other is Witter Bynner’s. It is found that translation aesthetics theory is a thread running through two translations, and reasons of different translation choices can be explained from translators’ translation idea, thinking pattern and sensitivity of expressed emotion of the ST, which can be a guidance for poetry translation.

Abstract:Poetry is the creation of beauty and thus aesthetics is an important translation criterion for poetry. By fully understanding the two English translated versions of Qiangjinjiu respectively by Xu Yuanchong and Burton Watson, the thesis will make a comparative analysis of the two versions from the perspective of translation aesthetics. In order to better illustrate the connotation of poetry translation and translation aesthetics, the essay will mainly compare the poetic representation of the two English versions from the aspects of rhythm, form, image, culture and content, targeting to present the differences between the two English versions and offer some suggestions on poetry translation.

Abstract:Poetry is quite personal in the sense that it is mainly written for the expression of the poets’ personal emotions, feelings, attitudes, point of views, etc. Therefore, it is endowed with strong subjectivity. Poets resort to different linguistic devices to realize their subjectivity in their poetry, which is termed as subjectification. Consequently, poets’ subjectivity constitutes an essential part of the meaning of their poetry. Thus, in the translation of poetry, it is vital for the translator to reconstruct the poets’ subjectivity. This paper attempts to conduct a contrast of thirteen English versions of Ru Meng Ling by Li Qingzhao from the perspective of subjectivity and subjectification. It will first make an analysis of Li Qingzhao’s subjectivity and subjectification in her Ru Meng Ling from the three dimensions, perspective, affect and epistemic modality. Then, a contrast is provided among the thirteen English versions. It is found that it is difficult to achieve a complete equivalence of subjectification due to the translators’ subjectivity in their translation. However, a good translator attempts to eschew his/her own subjectivity and reconstruct the poet’s subjectivity as much as possible.

The Comparison and Exploration of the Subject Difference between Lamentations and Lament of Capital Ying

Abstract:Lamentations and lament of capital Ying are models of city lament in ancient Hebrew-and Chinese classical literary traditions respectively. A comparative study shows that there are significant subject difference between lamentations and lament of capital Ying . Lamentations is the collective works, and its compilation and inheritance function as emotional expression of sufferings of the past, present and future of the Jewish people, reflecting their infinite belief of transcendent God . In contrast, lament of capital Ying is the creation of Qu Yuan, and under the influence of the sage's commitment to the mandate of heaven by his individual virtue. The poetry expresses Qu Yuan’s personal grief through a special literary technique and its succession and experience in later generations are mainly individual. The subject difference of two poetry is a reflection of different development trajectories of the humans-transcendent relationship in Hebrew- and the Chinese civilizations of the Axial Age.

Abstract:In Chinese classical literature, female consciousness means that authors can restore the true, natural and vivid state of female in their description. Li Qingzhao's three pieces of ci in different periods all portray the image of an independent female, who expresses the feelings of complaint and sorrow. By reviewing the development of female images and comparing the female images in ci written by male and female writers in the Song Dynasty, it is found that female consciousness always exists in Chinese classical literature, though it has never become the mainstream.

Abstract:This paper focuses on Sun Shaozhen's new works A Lecture on Literariness, deeply analyzes Sun's study on the logic of feeling and the literary formal principles, and compares it with Susan Langer's formalist aesthetics in detail. As a conclusion, we consider that Langer's study on art forms achieves a considerable height and strength, but it is a little empty because of its metaphysical character, while Sun deepens, particularizes, reifys and operationalizes the metaphysical concepts and principles which Langer cannot discuss deeply with his unusual abilities of induction and abstraction. The difference between Sun and Langer shows they both inherit and exceed each academic tradition, and construct their own theory proceeding from each theoretical aim and interest.

Abstract:In view of The Spyring or Lust, Caution has already become one of the modern Chinese classic novels as one of the representative works by Eileen Chang with strong influence in China to a deep degree for sketching China’s historical situation and cultural characteristics. Since its publication, it has been translated into several languages and appreciated by readers of all works of many countries. In view of the English version as a success, Eileen Chang, the author In fact, the subjectivity of the Chinese and English translators like Eileen Chang and Julia Lovell in particular, plays a pivotal role in the translation process. From an interdisciplinary perspective, a comparative analysis can be made in four aspects: the translator’s subjective consciousness and sub-consciousness, subjective creativity, intentionality and selectivity, and the choice of obedience or resistance in the translation process. Moreover, since the author is the translator in fewer cases, it is of great research value to study the comparison between the author-translator and the reader-translator, which can help culture exchange and communication and set up a sample for the channels to make works of china more adaptable to the acceptability of foreign readers while spreading Chinese literature and culture of high quality.

Abstract:A Dream of Red Mansions and Gone with the Wind both feature many prominent female characters. Among them, Jia Tanchun in a Dream of Red Mansions and Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind both have independent female thoughts. In spite of different time backgrounds and cultural tradition soil, the characters they portray have certain similarities. Comparing the similarities and differences of their independent thoughts can reveal the influence of social background on the development of feminism. The objective of the study is to make a comparison of these two characters and explore the inner link between the development of feminism and social background.

By describing their violation of normal standard and carrying forward female talents, the author expre'ssed their strong discontent with the traditional feudal ethics, and reflected their wishes to free themselves at that time. The difference is that caizijiaren - style novels tend to describe talented females in their dream, categorization in their figures, simplicity in their character, lack of hard basis of life. Abstract:Shui Hu Zhuan is one of the four great classical novels of Chinese literature, and the cornucopia of culture-loaded words contained in it has now become the focus of translation research. This study delves into the translation of culture-loaded words in Shui Hu Zhuan by meticulously examining three renowned English translations by Sidney Shapiro, Pearl S. Buck, and Dent Young. Adopting a qualitative research approach with descriptive interpretation, the study conducts a descriptive comparative analysis of the translations from four dimensions: official-title words, religious-related words, historical-culture words, and nicknames. From the perspective of functional equivalence, it is found that Buck's version frequently employs literal translation. Dent-Young’s version is characterized by strong readability and flexibility that transcends rigid translation strategies. Shapiro, on the other hand, skillfully combines liberal translation with literal translation, demonstrating a nuanced approach that captures the essence of the original text.

Abstract:A comparative criticism of HAN Yu's classical prose and SIMA Qian's Shi Ji,as an important part of the history of HAN Yu's criticism,had been concentrated on such issues as their works' differences in sentiment,temperament and showing their hands of mastery after their straitened life,particularly in their style and grammar,with the focuses of attention dispersed a bit too much at the early stage.Since middle Ming Dynasty,directed against the sole reverence for the grammatical arrangement of the Qin and Han Dynasties and imitating the outer-appearance but neglecting inner-essence,the style of concurrently taking in Tang and Song Schools had begun to form the self-consciousness of comparison with SIMA Qian's Shi Ji as the reference,and with quintessence and distinctive character stressed most.This shift is an act of succeeding to the right tradition of classical prose and a product of basing prose on the Tang and Song Dynasties and getting to the root of the Qin and Han Dynasties.This idea both was an important methodology of research,but also formed the core content of the theory of classical prose writing on the basis of the theory of comparison emphasizing the literary tradition and imitation.
