Abstract:A new type hybrid optical electronic current transformer (EOCT) with rated voltage 220 kV and rated current 1 200 A, was developed. The Principle of this current transformer as well as the general construction was studied. And the first prototype instrument was built and tested.

Optical fiber-based power and data delivery system for high voltage electronic current transformer

Abstract:This paper describes a prototype power delivery system developed for high voltage electronic current transformer (ECT) that uses laser light to transfer power to and communicates with the primary converter. The design is based on optical-to-electrical power converters, solid-state diode lasers and optical fibers. Command signals are transmitted via the same up-fiber used to send power from secondary power supply to primary converter. The upward data transmission is completed during the brief interruption of power delivery without affecting steady power-supply. A simple comparator added to the primary converter can take the command data. Experimental results show that the fibers can provide reliable up-link for data transmission at 200 kb/s from the secondary to the primary converter. Based on the delivery system, the secondary converter can control three auxiliary channels to provide additional information. These monitoring channels are used in a time-multiplexing mode to provide information about the operation temperature, voltage and current at the remote unit for monitoring the ECT. This preventive maintenance or built-in test can increase reliability by giving early warning for necessary maintenance request.

Abstract:The characteristics of optic fiber current transducer are introduced. Compared with the traditional transducer, it has higher measuring precision, better transient characteristic, simpler insulation structure, smaller size, lower cost and better scalability. Optic fiber current transducers can be divided into two groups: opto-electronic current transducer (OECT) and magnetic optical current transducer (MOCT). The principles and structure characteristics of these two types of optic fiber current transducers are presented. It has broad prospects to apply the optic fiber technique integrated with computer technique in the power systems, in particular, in the integrated substation automation system.

Abstract:A digital optical fiber current transformer (OCT) based on Rogowski coil and optical fiber transmission for use in high voltage systems is described in this paper. The technologies of signal sampling, processing and communication for the optical current transformer are introduced. The paper analyzes the present supply power techniques on high voltage side, and puts forward a new closed-loop regulating method through tailor-made small CT to obtain stable supply power. The experiment results verified that the designed power supply can operate normally as the current of bus is above 8A. The accuracy of current measurement is 0.2%.

Abstract:Abstract Based on the transverse electro-optic effect of lithium niobate crystal, combined with polarizers and Faraday rotator, this paper presents a collinear closed-loop fiber optic current transformer with spatial non-reciprocity modulation method, and the feasibility of the scheme is verified by both the theoretical and experimental evidences. The detection scheme avoids the limitation of the transition time of the sensing fiber coil on the phase modulation frequency, improves the sensitivity and stability of the system, and reduces the volume and cost of fiber optic current transformer. The sawtooth wave modulation scheme is adopted to realize phase bias modulation and feedback modulation through phase shift of sawtooth wave to achieve closed-loop detection effect, which enhances the signal to noise ratio and simplifies demodulation mode. The experimental results show that the current ratio errors measured at room temperature range from 1% to 120% of rated current meet the requirements of national standard GB/T 20840.8-2007 and reach the accuracy level of 0.2S. The temperature stability of the current transformer is also tested, and the ratio error measured at the rated current does not exceed ±0.2% in the range of -30 °C to 50 °C.

Abstract:We present a novel hybrid electro-optic current transformer based on a fast variable optical attenuator (FVOA) with the features of ultra-low power consumption and polarization insensitivity. An optic-electro feedback loop with a PID control algorithm is designed to compensate the nonlinearity of the FVOA. In addition, the impacts of the power drift of the optical source and variance of fiber loss have been investigated and eliminated. The transformer is built with a verified power consumption of 0.85 mW. Experiments were made in which the linearity, the robustness, the accuracy and the temperature stability of the transformer were tested. The results show that the ratio errors and the phase errors are below 0.07% and 5 min, respectively, when the primary current increased from 25 to 600 A. In addition, the maximum error drifts of 0.17% and 2.8 min were recorded over the −20 to 80 °C range.

Abstract:Conventional electromagnetic induction-based current transformers suffer from issues such as bulky and complex structures, slow response times, and low safety levels. Consequently, researchers have explored combining various sensing technologies with optical fibers to develop optical current transformers that could become the primary choice for power systems in the future. With the maturation of optoelectronic technology, optical current transformers have emerged. They offer outstanding advantages, including high sensitivity, integration, stability, and the ability to operate in complex environments. This review categorizes optical current transformers based on different principles, including all-fiber current transformers, those based on magnetostrictive effects, magneto-optic effects, and thermal effects. It also discusses their principles, structures, manufacturing techniques, and signal processing, while forecasting their future development trends.

Abstract:Measuring corona discharge current directly on the high voltage side is essential for the discharge mechanism research of test object. The corona discharge is so weak that the amplitude of the current is in the level of muA and its frequency ranges from DC to MHz. An optical micro-current transducer used for the measurement of this current is described in this paper based on an amplitude modulation principle. It uses a fiber optic link for data transmission from the remote module (high voltage side) to the local module (ground potential side) and a battery for supplying power to the electronic circuitry of the remote module at high voltage side. The uncertainty of the transducer is estimated to be less than 0.5% in ratio and its response frequency range is from DC to several MHz.

Abstract:It is an inevitable trend to develop new kinds of reliable current transformers for high accuracy measurement,such as hybrid optical-electronic current transformer(HOCT).The key problem of HOCT is the power supply of current transformer.A voltage raise circuit to make the optical cell at high efficiency was designed.This method resolved the problem that the output power of optical cell changed with the load resistant.And the smart battery monitor sent the data to ground part by the electric-optic module,which avoided the data disturbed by the magnetism and high voltage in the transmission.The system was controlled by micro-control unit(MCU),which altered the current of laser based on the data from smart battery monitor.The system can realize the stable power.Experimental results indicate that the voltage of the system is stable when the resistance of load is changed.

Abstract:An innovative dual-channel fiber optic current sensor (FOCS) based on two-carrier modulation technique is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The system enhances standard reflective FOCS by incorporating an additional sensing channel, thereby effectively using key optical devices without incurring significant additional costs. By rationally designing the relationship between the frequencies of the two carriers and the transmission fiber length of two channels, simultaneous current measurement without crosstalk can be achieved. The experimental results demonstrate that the current measurements from both channels are highly independent and exhibit a linear variation with respect to the applied current, with an coefficient exceeding 0.9999. In the experiment, the two channels have a maximum current sensitivity of 1.1 and 0.8 mV/A, respectively. In addition, the system has excellent long-term stability, as evidenced by signal fluctuations of 2.68 and V for the two channels over a 30-min duration. The proposed scheme offers a promising solution for advancing the development of multichannel current measurement and holds potential for practical applications in the power grid.

Abstract:A fiber-optic current sensor implementing the differential measurement to measure currents up to tens of megaamperes is proposed. The sensor is based on a reflective interferometer with a sensing coil made up of two spliced highly birefringent spun fibers with different sensitivities and wound in opposite directions around the current conductor. Mode coupling occurring at the splice has been shown to disturb the output signal, requiring modifications to the signal processing. The 50 MA range sensor has been experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract:Optical fiber sensors are of particular interest for applications in the high-voltage environments of the electric power industry due to their characteristic properties including a dielectric nature, immunity to electro-magnetic interference, and small size and weight. We review our fiber-optic sensors for current and voltage and describe their applications in high-voltage substations. The current sensor employs the Faraday effect in a thermally annealed coil of sensing fiber. The current-induced differential phase shift of two-circular light waves is recovered by means of a novel polarization rotated reflection interferometer. The voltage sensor is based on the converse piezoelectric effect in a cylinder-shaped quartz crystal. An elliptical-core dual-mode fiber senses the crystal's piezoelectric deformation and is interrogated using low-coherence interferometry.

Abstract:This paper reports on the testing and evaluation of a passive autoranging (AR) method designed to dynamically extend the measurement range of a photonic current transducer (PCT) to pave the way toward a realization of a combined metering- and protection-class current sensor. The PCT utilizes a current transformer (CT), a piezoelectric transducer (PZT), and a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) to enable current measurement at multiple points in an electrical power network whereby multiple sensors are deployed and interrogated serially using a single optical fiber. The autoranging technique relies on incorporating static MOSFET switches to instantaneously short individual serially connected CT burdens in response to a measured current magnitude exceeding pre-set thresholds. The AR circuit switching events produce distinctive signal features that are used by the proposed switching algorithm to apply appropriate scaling factors to reconstruct the measured current from the optical signal. It is shown through laboratory experiments that the AR circuit correctly reacts to pre-set burden current thresholds of 130% of the nominal value and 22 times the nominal value, signifying its "metering" and "protection" range boundaries. The circuit reaction time is below 4 ms, rendering it suitable for standard power system protection purposes. Moreover, the operation of the AR circuit is demonstrated for burden currents of up to 100 A for over 1 s, satisfying a test procedure for the secondary CT circuit, as required by some power system operators. It is demonstrated that the proposed switching algorithm allows for a correct reconstruction of the burden currents from the optical signal acquired by the FBG interrogator, offering the potential to realize a dual-class optical current sensor.

Abstract:A fiber optic current sensor utilizing orbital angular momentum (OAM) beam is proposed in this paper. The superposition principle of composite OAM beam is deduced, and the current sensing process is derived by Jones matrix. The current is measured by detecting the rotation angle of petal-like patterns formed after the composite OAM beam through the polarizer. The reflective structure of the sensor doubles the rotation angle, which improves the measuring sensitivity and the reciprocity of the system. Through simulation analysis, we verified that the rotation angle changes linearly with the increase of current, and the sensitivity of the proposed sensor is 0.1254°/A. Finally, on this basis, the angle recognition method is optimized, and the final measurement error is less than ±0.2% in the range of 50A-1500A. .

Abstract:The designs and tests of a hybrid-optical direct current transformer (HOCT) are demonstrated, which consists of a shunt, a coil, an opto-electric transmission system and some electronics. The experiment results show that the DC measurement meets the 0.2 accuracy class standards and the harmonic measurement confirms with GB/T 14549-93 for harmonic of public power. (4 pages)

Abstract:Diamond nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center has been widely employed in experimental magnetic field measurement using continuous wave optical detection magnetic resonance (ODMR), which makes it possible for current sensing. An optical fiber current transducer prototype using an NV center is built for electric power application. The DC measurement with an error of less than 4% within 500 A is realized, in which the error of 50 A to 450 A is better than 2%, and the low-frequency AC measurement is preliminarily realized. In this essay, the accuracy of low current measurement is primarily affected by system noise, while the accuracy of heavy current is mainly affected by the width of the ODMR resonance peak. Optimizing the optical path as well as sensing structure meanwhile updating the demodulation algorithm of the measured data is the following work to improve the measurement accuracy.

Abstract:An electronic current transformer based on a low-power current transformer (LPCT) is developed to overcome the disadvantages of traditional current transformer for the complexity of insulation, magnetic saturation of coils as well as the measuring accuracy of Rogowski coils that can be influenced by temperature characteristic and manufacturing technology. The output of the LPCT is converted to digital light pulse signal using an active electronic circuit at the high-tension side; the signal is then transmitted to the control room through a cable of optic fiber; the measuring and relay channels are provided after the signal processing unit in the control room. Testing results show that the electronic current transformer can meet the accuracy requirement of IEC 60044-8 0. 2 class for measuring current transformer and 5P20 class for protective current transformer. Temperature test results show that the ratio error changes within ±0.1% and phase error within ±2′ at-30℃-70℃ .

Abstract:Current measurement is a key part of the monitoring system for power transmission lines. Compared with the conventional current sensor, the distributed, self-powered and contactless current sensor has great advantages of safety and reliability. By integrating the current sensing function and the energy harvesting function of current transformer (CT), a time-multiplexed self-powered wireless sensor that can measure the power transmission line current is presented in this paper. Two operating modes of CT, including current sensing mode and energy harvesting mode, are analyzed in detail. Through the design of mode-switching circuit, harvesting circuit and measurement circuit are isolated using only one CT secondary coil, which eliminates the interference between energy harvesting and current measurement. Thus, the accurate measurement in the current sensing mode and the maximum energy collection in the energy harvesting mode are both realized, all of which simplify the online power transmission line monitoring. The designed time-multiplexed working mode allows the sensor to work at a lower transmission line current, at the expense of a lower working frequency. Finally, the proposed sensor is verified by experiments.
