Abstract:Batch processes are flexible to meet the needs of the fluctuated market and have become very important in the modern chemical industry. Two-level control structure is widely adjusted in the operation of batch process. The higher level is the end-point property control and the low level tracks the time-varying reference trajectories designed by the high level. The two-level control structure does not take the dynamics of the low level into consideration in the high level that the low level cannot track the given trajectories perfectly because of model-plant mismatches. Also, this structure does not take the duration of the batch process into consideration which may lead to economic loss in the end. An integrated control structure is proposed in this paper to deal with the drawbacks of two-level structure. Also, different from the traditional objective of the high level, it is a pure economic objective in the integrated control structure using average profit criteria. In order to gain higher economic performance, the predictive horizon is relaxed here to achieve larger feasible region.

Abstract:The methods for batch processes monitoring based on multivariate techniques always have two assumptions. One is that batches must have equal duration. The other one is the normal distribution of batch process data. However, those are not always satisfied in practice. In order to overcome those problems, a novel monitoring method based on the dissimilarity index for batch processes is proposed without any assumptions on the lengths of batches and distribution of process data. The proposed method is applied to a simulation fed-batch penicillin production. The application results show that this method is effective.

Abstract:Wort evaporating process is one of key processes in brewery workshop. It's very important to model the process for control the evaporating intensity and product quality. A novel modeling method for wort evaporating process was introduced and the control system was designed based on the plant characteristic. According to compensation principle, a factor named fouling-compensator for controller was calculated by estimating the wort fouling resistance. The controller using fouling-compensator has a better performance against the fouling disturbance when system mode changes from dirty to clean and against the recipe disturbance when recipes change from one batch to another batch. The new method realized the automatic tuning of control parameters. The accuracy of evaporating intensity increased from /spl plusmn/1% to /spl plusmn/0.3%.

Abstract:The evolution of Autonomous Mobile Robot's (AMR) pipeline navigating system is incapable of being described by ordinary physical and natural science theorems, but subordinated to certain complicated, artificial rules. And the dynamic transition process, which is a typical Discrete Event System (DES), is therefore determined by the interaction of the nonlinear and discrete events. In this article, the DES model is established, and the further qualitative and quantitative analysis from logic and algebra hierarchy has been researched. In logic hierarchy, the Petri net is applied for qualitative analysis. And in algebra hierarchy, the Max-Plus algebra is introduced for system modeling, which transforms the nonlinear system to Max-Plus algebra linear system. At last, veracity of the Max-Plus algebra linear model is validated in proving ground environments.

Abstract:Run-to-run (R2R) process control has attracted much attention in research and has been widely used in practice. It has been proved effective at compensating for process disturbances by using R2R controllers at a single stage. However, most manufacturing processes span across multiple stages; variation in earlier stages can be magnified stage by stage if they are not properly eliminated. In addition, products are processed batch by batch in certain manufacturing processes. In such cases, the traditional EWMA controller might not effectively reduce the variation. This paper focuses on developing a process control strategy for batch production in a multistage process. In the newly proposed framework, a batch-allocation operation is introduced to group products into similar clusters before each stage; an R2R controller is then implemented to generate customized recipes for each batch. This framework emphasizes better coordination among the stages in a multistage process. Simulation results show that the proposed strategy is effective for the reduction of variation.

Abstract:Batch processes are often characterized by piecewise linear dynamics due to varying operating conditions. Multiphase and multimode modeling of batch processes is a common technique that offers insight into the process operation and improved online monitoring. However, existing monitoring methods have several drawbacks such as neglecting process dynamics, requiring separate treatment of transient behavior, and relying on uniformity between batches. These challenges are addressed here by proposing a new strategy to construct a dynamic model for monitoring multimode and multiphase batch processes. A linear dynamic system partitions phases and describes local dynamic behavior before modes of operation are clustered based on the global differences between batches. Lastly, an expectation maximization algorithm for multibatch data in the same mode is applied to estimate phase parameters. Process monitoring results on a benchmark penicillin fermentation data set suggest a significant improvement over previous methods.

Abstract:Traditional methods of open equation modeling have great limitations in the maintenance and reuse of models, especially for large-scale modeling problems. Legacy models could not be inherited and reused easily. Open equation technique and object-oriented method are deeply investigated and integrated. A new modeling approach is presented based on that. The framework structure of the new modeling environment is proposed and designed. The new modeling approach is used for formulating simulation and optimization problems of chemical processes. The taxonomy, definition, and organization of chemical engineering class library are proposed and implemented. The validity, usability and efficiency are demonstrated in modeling an adiabatic flash process.

Abstract:Owing to the natures of batch processes, such as high nonlinearity, time-varying, and limited batch time duration, their control remains as a challenge to modern industries. This paper takes a typical batch process, injection molding, as an example to present a set of control schemes for batch processes. Advanced control algorithms such as adaptive control and model predictive control have been adopted to deal with the inherent process nonlinear and time-varying characteristics. These control algorithms are all focused on single cycle control performance. A multi-cycle two-dimensional model predictive learning control has been developed for batch processes control to take advantages of batch process repeatability. In this presentation, besides showing the control results/methods, the authors wish to illustrate the development evolution with their understanding of the natures of batch processes in general, injection molding in particular.

Abstract:In batch process, operating conditions change to meet the requirements of market and customers. For different combinations of operating conditions, data based modeling process has to be repeated for the development of a new prediction model, if common process characteristics are ignored. Obviously, this is inefficient and uneconomical. Effective using and extraction of certain common process behaviors and characteristics can allow fewer numbers of experiments for the development of new process model, resulting in savings of time, cost and efforts. With this as the key objective, a modeling method is proposed for batch process modeling in this paper.

Abstract:Batch processing is common in mass manufacturing industries due to its high productivity, such as aerospace, semiconductor, and automotive. Based on the analysis of a Bernoulli production line consisting of a discrete machine and a batch machine, this paper investigates a general scenario of batch-batch lines. Utilizing a systems approach with theoretic and experimental analysis, the system properties, such as the monotonicity and reversibility, are analyzed, and the impact of batch size on the performance is studied. Based on them, continuous improvements of the batch-batch lines are explored which include constrained improvement and bottleneck analysis. This paper provides an effective method to analyze batch-batch manufacturing systems, which is also a building block for studying multi-machine systems.

Abstract:Two-dimensional control has been considered as an effective strategy to accomplish high-accuracy tracking for batch processes because of its excellent learning ability and time-domain stability. However, being a model-based control method, the performance of the two-dimensional control system will inevitably decrease due to unknown uncertainties or unmodeled dynamics. In addition, the high computational cost and complex design process of the control system severely limit its application in batch processes. For this reason, this paper proposes a new data-driven two-dimensional integrated control (DDTDIC) method for nonlinear batch processes. In the presented control scheme, the P-type iterative learning control (ILC) is adopted along the batch-axis to ensure the convergence of the system, and the proportional-integral-differential (PID) control is used in the time-axis to reject the influence of real-time disturbance. The parameters of the PID controller are obtained by utilizing the virtual reference feedback tuning (VRFT) method. The entire design process of the control system only requires the input and output (I/O) data of the batch processes and does not depend on any explicit model information. The simulation results show that compared with the ILC and the two-dimensional control, the presented control method not only has faster convergence speed and smaller tracking error, but also the computational efficiency is improved by more than 40% and 50% respectively.

Abstract:Batch processes are of great importance in process industry. However, the control algorithm design is difficult for those with constraints. This is because stability and recursive feasibility along directions of time and batch should be guaranteed simultaneously. In this paper, a stable model predictive control strategy with zero terminal state constraints is proposed. Stability and recursive feasibility along two directions are guaranteed and proved. Simulation results are given to show the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Abstract:The paper first presents a comprehensive description of some hot problems in statistical modeling, online monitoring, and quality prediction for batch process based on multivariate statistical techniques, including the develop-ment of various solutions and their advantages and disadvantages. Then, phase-based statistical analysis strategies are addressed with a focus on the multiplicity of operation phase and phase transition behaviors. This part analyzes the phase-basod process characteristics and their effects on product quality, discusses the inherent basis, and reveals their significance. Finally, from the viewpoint of solving practical problems, the existing problems are explored and their prospective development is discussed. Phase-based statistical analysis for batch processes is important in both theory meaning and application, which will benefit further process monitoring, fault diagnosis and quality prediction.

Abstract:In batch process, it is very important to closed-loop control the key process variables in the quality insurance system. The early studies can be classed to the direct application of advanced continuous control strategies, such as adaptive control and feed-forward control, to deal with the inherent process nonlinear and time-varying characteristics. These control strategies does not make use of the repetitive nature of batch process. Recently, two-dimensional (2D) control strategy has been developed for batch processes control. It is an integration of iterative learning control and feed-back control to handle the repetitive uncertainty and non-repetitive uncertainty, respectively. Both simulation and experimental test results to injection molding, a typical batch process, have shown the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.
