Abstract:Nonlinear conductivity dielectric is widely used today to solve high energy discharge problems in many fields (such as spacecraft charging and motor insulation).This paper summarized the research about the nonlinear conductivity theory of composite materials.In particular, the key issues about nonlinear conductivity studies of composite materials are proposed.The nonlinear conductivity mechanisms of two typical filler particles (SiC and ZnO) are introduced.In addition, two kinds of nonlinear conductivity theory, including the traditional dielectric conduction theory and the polymer conduction theory, are reviewed.Several mechanisms in each of the conduction theories are analyzed, and also, the advantages and disadvantages of these theories are presented in detail.Thus, the purpose of this paper is to let the researchers know the nonlinear conductivity research status fully.We believe this paper is of great significance for the nonlinear dielectric conductivity researchers.

Abstract:Samples of conductive composites, prepared by alkyd resins, fillers, solvent and additive needed, showed that surface resistance R_s decreased down to 70 Ω unit square of surface. Study of the effects of carbon fillers on R_s of the conductive composites showed that the particle size of fillers, the filler content, the curing process for filler, the dispersities of fillers, and mixed fillers have different effects on R_s. The conduction mechanism for polymer composites filled with different ratios of graphite content to carbon black (CB) content was discussed and the result was supported by scanning electron microscope(SEM).

Abstract:An overview of the microstructure evolution, mechanical properties, electrical conductivity and microalloying is presented and some further research fields are suggested for Cu-Ag microcomposites. The nanostructures of filamentary morphology in these microcomposites can be obtained by heavy deformation. Both the mechanical and electrical properties depend upon the material composition, strain degree, intermediate heat treatments and final annealing processes. These factors strongly affect the phase proportion, microstructure morphology, precipitate volume, hardening level and filamentary distribution. Optimum technology of materials preparation makes the microcomposites possess high strength and conductivity. Some third constituents added to the alloys improve the strength but generally decrease the conductivity. It is considered that relative mechanisms and processes should be further investigated for the development and application of the microcomposites.

Abstract:Field grading composite dielectrics with good nonlinear electrical properties can function as smart materials for electrical field control in a high-voltage apparatus. Besides the well-documented nonlinear conducting behavior, the field-dependent effective permittivity of field grading composites were also reported; however, in-depth research on the mechanism and influencing factors of this nonlinear permittivity are absent. This paper theoretically discusses the origin of the nonlinear effective permittivity, and the mechanism is illustrated through the waveform analysis of the nonlinear response of ZnO microvaristor/silicone rubber composites under a pure AC field. The field-dependent effective permittivity and loss property of the ZnO composites are measured by a dielectric spectrometer in both DC and AC fields under different frequencies. Through comparison of measurement results and theoretical models, the influence of the filler concentration, frequency, and time domain characteristics of the applied field on the nonlinear permittivity of the field grading composites are well explained. This paper provides insight into the nonlinear permittivity of field grading composites, and will be helpful for further tuning the performance of field grading composites.

Abstract:As the electrification of society towards higher power density and efficiency, new generation power and electronic apparatus place urgent demands on insulation strength and electrical stress management. Nonlinear materials have drawn great attention from academia and industry for their field-depended conductivity, which endows them with the potential virtue of electric overstress mitigation. In this paper, a system of the needle-plate electrode, simulating the condition of a conductive tip in the solid composites system, was used as the experimental framework. The conductivity behavior of ZnO/SiR composites with different filler concentrations in inhomogeneous electric field were measured. The percolation phenomenon was discussed based on the micromorphology obtained by scanning electron microscope. To verify the electric stress management capabilities of nonlinear materials, a discharge detection experiment was set up, and a corresponding finite element model was created to analyze. The results show that nonlinear materials can well grade the electric field, which increased the initial discharge voltage of the overall system by more than 58% and reduced the highest electric field by 81% compared to the conventional method.

Abstract:Nonlinear composite dielectrics can function as smart materials for stress control and field grading in all fields of electrical insulations. The percolation process is a significant issue of composite dielectrics. However, the classic percolation theory mainly deals with traditional composites in which the electrical parameters of both insulation matrix and conducting fillers are independent of the applied electric field. This paper measured the nonlinear V-I characteristics of ZnO microvaristors/silicone rubber composites with several filler concentrations around an estimated percolation threshold. For the comparison with the experiment, a new microstructural model is proposed to simulate the nonlinear conducting behavior of the composite dielectrics modified by metal oxide fillers, which is based on the Voronoi network and considers the breakdown feature of the insulation matrix for near percolated composites. Through both experiment and simulation, the interior conducting mechanism and percolation process of the nonlinear composites were presented and a specific percolation threshold was determined as 33%. This work has provided a solution to better understand the characteristics of nonlinear composite dielectrics.

Abstract:The nonlinear conductivity of polymer composites is helpful in regulating electric field distribution and dissipating surface charge and/or space charge. In this article, silicon carbide (SiC) nanoparticles are used as the nonlinear filler and added to epoxy resin. The filler loadings were 0, 1, 3, 7, and 10 wt%. The glass transition temperature, dielectric spectroscopy, and nonlinear conductivity are investigated. The results show that the glass transition temperature and the real part of the complex permittivity are closely related to the interaction zone surrounding the nanoparticles. The epoxy/SiC nanocomposites present distinct nonlinear conduction characteristics. By considering the effect of the interaction zone around the nanoparticles, a theoretical model is used to qualitatively explain the field dependence and temperature dependence of the nonlinear conductivity.

Abstract:Composite systems may be obtained through chemical-physical incorporation of various components, and if the components are inorganic or largely inorganic, the composites are designated inorganic composite systems. The properties and functions of inorganic composites can be tuned through controlling the composition, the structure and the morphology of the composites. The inorganic composite systems usually include the host-guest composites, coordination polymers and a variety of nanocomposites and so on. The functionalization of these inorganic composites is very important for develop and application of the new materials and energies. This article briefly reviews the recent advancement in design and preparation of inorganic composites such as the functional host-guest composites, functional nanocomposites as well as functional coordination polymers with the luminescent, magnetic and catalytic properties. And the relevant recent results achieved by our own research group have been summarized. The practical application of functional inorganic composites and its impact on the advancement of science and technology are also discussed.

It is pointed out that these models have their own range of application. Particular regulations of conductivity change of composite materials with filler concentration can be explained by using the conduction current due to interfacial charge accumulation.

Abstract:Nonlinear electrically conductive composites are widely used for electric field grading in HVDC systems. However, the composites prepared using current methods can rarely simultaneously meet the requirements of a high nonlinear coefficient, low switching field and low filler content, which limits their application scope. In this work, by applying a 10-kHz AC electric field during the preparation, the prepared tetra-needle-shaped ZnO whisker / carbon fiber / liquid silicone rubber (T-ZnOw/CF/LSR) composites can be implemented in a manner to meet the above three requirements. The electric field-assisted LSR composites filled with 20 phr T-ZnOw and 5 phr CF can have a switching field of as low as 420 V/mm and a nonlinear coefficient of up to 11.7. The mechanism for the electric field-assisted enhancement of the nonlinear characteristics of the T-ZnOw/CF/LSR ternary hybrid system was explained based on the electromechanics of the suspended particles. The nonlinear characteristics and the filler content do not present a positive correlation, and a low (<10 phr) or high (>30 phr) filler content leads to decreased nonlinear characteristics in the composites. Compared with LSR, the electric field-assisted composites introduce a large number of shallow traps with increased trap density and reduced trap energy levels.

Abstract:As the temperature of electronic devices continues to rise, the quest for high-efficiency heat dissipation has emerged as a critical concern, particularly when it comes to ensuring device performance and longevity. A high thermal conductivity is usually dependent on the ability of fillers to provide thermal conduction channels within composites. In recent years, the development of three-dimensional (3D) interconnected structures using high thermal conductivity fillers in composites has emerged as a promising approach. Compared to the traditional isotropic distribution and directional arrangements, 3D interconnected filler structures improve the thermal conductivity. We review research progress on metal matrix composites with a 3D interconnected carbon filler that have a high thermal conductivity. The thermal conductivity mechanisms and models of composites are elaborated, and important factors relevant to improving the thermal conductivity are considered. Ways of constructing 3D interconnected carbon networks and their effects on the thermal conductivity of their composites should serve as a reference for the advancement of high-performance metal matrix thermal conductivity composites.

Abstract:Nonlinear current-voltage (I-V) behavior is a typical feature of polymeric composites containing conductor or semiconductor fillers, which are desired to handle the transient voltage and electrostatic discharge (ESD) of microelectronic devices. In this paper, the mechanism of nonlinear behavior of carbon nano tubes (CNTs) filled polymer composites in the applied electric field was explored. The I-V curves of the composites exhibited three regions. The variation of current at low voltages (region I) is linear. Under relatively higher voltages (region II), the variation is nonlinear and grows rapidly with voltage. As the voltage is further increased, the I-V curve is still non-linear (region III), but the growth rate is significantly slowed down. The I-V characteristics in the above three regions were analyzed systematically based on the calculation of the electrons hopping from the conduction band of CNTs to epoxy, the induced current under electric field, as well as Joule-heating and tunneling effect. Abstract:The main problems in high-dielectric-constant polymer composites are reviewed.The composites of polymers with ceramics,conductive particles(metal particles,graphite and carbon nanotubes) are summarized.The review also narrates copper phthalocyanine and polyaniline modified all-organic high-K composites.Meanwhile,problems facing the traditional high-K polymer composites are discussed.At last,the prospects of the possible developments in the future are proposed,that is to enhance the dielectric constant,energy density,and to decrease the dielectric loss and production cost.

Composite Interfaces

Abstract:Carbon/Carbon composites are advanced materials composed of carbon fibers and other carbon materials (graphite, graphene, carbon nanotubes, pyrolytic carbon, etc.). Due to the diverse structures and excellent properties of carbon fibers and other carbon-based materials, they have attracted widespread attention from scholars at home and abroad. Copper-carbon/carbon composites have gained widespread application in aerospace, electronic packaging, thermal management materials, high-speed rail transportation, and biomedical fields. Current laboratory studies indicate that these composites exhibit a friction coefficient of approximately 0.3, with flexural and tensile strengths reaching 150 MPa and 500 MPa respectively, and an overall thermal conductivity of about 600 W/m•K. Future research is expected to further optimize and enhance their fabrication methods, as well as their physical, mechanical, and biological properties. This review article provides a comprehensive overview of copper-carbon/carbon composites formed by combining copper with carbon fibers and other carbonaceous materials. It introduces several novel fabrication techniques, offering valuable references for research on copper-carbon/carbon composites. Additionally, the article discusses the future development trends of these advanced composite materials.
