Abstract:The organic light-emitting diodes have been considered for applications in backlights of liquid-crystal displays,ultrathin plat full-color display,efficient illuminators and electro-pumped organic solid laser,etc.The process responsible for electroluminescence requires the injection of electrons from one electrode and holes from the other,the electron-hole pairs form excitons in emitting layer,and then the light generate through the radiative recombination of the excitons.In the past near upon twenty years,great progress has been made in electroluminescent devices and materials.Up to now,the three primary colors of red,green and blue,which are required for full-color displays,have been achieved.Among these,the green emission is the most perfect and the corresponding device almost reaches to commercial criterion.However,the blue and red emissions are more challenging,and there are many activities to be focused on efficient blue and red light-emitting ma-(terials.) This paper reviews our recent works on blue organic light-emitting diodes,including blue materials,such as the metal chelate complex,(2,3-methyl-8-hydroxy-quinoline) lithium(LiMMq),and derivates of polyfluorene,dendritic polyfluorene(PDFA),and blue electroluminescent devices based on exciplex emission formed at the interface between 9,9-Dibutyl-N,N,N′,N′-tetraphenyl-9H-fluorene-2,7-diamine(DTFD) and 2,2-[1,2-phenylenebis(oxy)] bis(N,N′-diphenyl-acetamide)(PBD).The performances of the blue emitting materials and the devices have been studied by photoluminescent,electroluminrescent spectra and characteristic of current-brightness-bias voltage etc.The life-time and color-purity of blue organic light-emitting(diodes) are required to be further improved for the commercial production.

A timely review into the current state of blue LECs is deemed imperative, as a full understanding of the molecular and device design strategy and identification of the major challenges that must be addressed to realize practical applications is necessary. A specific summary of recent progress on blue LECs is provided, with the focus placed on design strategies for blue emitters for LECs and device structures with respect to color tuning, efficiency enhancement, and stability improvement. Finally, the direction of development strategies in the future is suggested.

Electroluminescent and Displaying Devices Based on Semi-Conducting Polymers

Abstract:This paper involves a review on the advancing history of electroluminescent and displaying devices based on semi-conducting polymers(PLED), a series of main breakthroughs in this field in recent years. The different PLED structures and their features of nowaday ongoing research works are compared, the basic working principle of PLED are briefly introduced to the point, a precise defination of PLED quantum efficiency is given and the methods about how to improve the quantum efficiency are comprehensively described. The design, synthesis of charge transport polymers and their application in PLEDs are presented taking the prevalent multilayer PLEDs as examples. The application fields, existent problems, and future development of PLEDs are commented as a conclusion remark.

Abstract:Although organic light-emitting devices have been commercialized as flat panel displays since 1997, only singlet excitons were emitted. Full use of singlet and triplet excitons, electrophosphorescence, has attracted increasing attentions after the premier work made by Forrest, Thompson, and co-workers. In fact, red electrophosphorescent dye has already been used in sub-display of commercial mobile phones since 2003. Highly efficient green phosphorescent dye is now undergoing of commercialization. Very recently, blue phosphorescence approaching the theoretical efficiency has also been achieved, which may overcome the final obstacle against the commercialization of full color display and white light sources from phosphorescent materials. Combining light out-coupling structures with highly efficient phosphors ( shown in the table-of-contents image), white emission with an efficiency matching that of fluorescent tubes (90 lm/W) has now been realized. It is possible to tune the color to the true white region by changing to a deep blue emitter and corresponding wide gap host and transporting material for the blue phosphor. In this article, recent progresses in red, green, blue, and white electrophosphorescent materials for OLEDs are reviewed, with special emphasis on blue electrophosphorescent materials.
High Fluorescence Rate of Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Emitters for Efficient and Stable Blue OLEDs

Abstract:A lack of an efficient and stable blue device is a critical factor restricting the development of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology, which is currently expected to be overcome by employing thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). Here, we investigate the TADF and electroluminescence (EL) performance of six carbazole/triphenyltriazine derivatives in different hosts. A good linearity between lg(LT50/kF2) and the EL emission wavelength is found, where LT50 is the half-life of the devices and kF is the fluorescence rate of the emitters, suggesting the dominance of the singlet exciton energy and lifetime in the device stability. An indolylcarbazole/triphenyltriazine derivative (ICz-TRZ) with the capability to suppress solid-state solvation exhibits blueshifted emission and an increased kF (1.5×108 s-1) in comparison to the control emitters in doped films. ICz-TRZ-based devices realize a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 18% and an EQE of 5.5% at a very high luminance of 7×104 cd/m2. Ignoring the poor electrochemical stability of ICz-TRZ, the device offers an LT50 approaching 100 hr under an initial luminance of 1000 cd/m2 and CIE coordinates of (0.14, 0.19). The findings in this work suggested that computer-aided design of high kF TADF emitters can be an approach to realizing efficient and stable blue OLEDs.
Highly Efficient Organic Blue Electroluminescent Materials and Devices with Mesoscopic Structures

Abstract:Due to the difficulty in achieving high efficiency and high color purity simultaneously, blue emission is the limiting factor for the performance and stability of OLEDs. Since 2003, we have been working on organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), especially on blue light. After a series of molecular designs, novel strategies have been proposed from different aspects. At first, highly efficient deep blue emission could be achieved through molecular design with highly twisted structure to suppress fluorescence quenching and redshift. Deep blue emitters with high efficiency in solid state, a twisted structure with aggregation induced emission (AIE) characteristics was incorporated to inhibit molecular aggregation, and triplet-triplet fusion (TTF) and hybridized localized charge transfer (HLCT) were adopted to increase the ratio of triplet exciton used. Secondly, a highly efficient blue OLED could be achieved through improving charge transport. New electron transport materials (ETMs) with wide band gap were developed to control charge transport balance in devices. Thirdly, a highly efficient deep blue emission could be achieved through a mesoscopic structure of out-coupling layer. A mesoscopic photonic structured organic thin film was fabricated on the top of metal electrode by self-aggregation in order to improve the light out-coupling efficiency.

Abstract:Phenanthro[9,10-d]-imidazole(PI) unit has attracted extensive attentions in organic optoelectro-nic field due to its intrinsic wide band gap, high luminescence efficiency, good thermal stability, balanced charge carrier injection and transport property as well as low fabrication cost. In this manuscript, the recently reported blue electroluminescent PI derivatives were reviewed. The structure characteristics of PI were demon-strated, and the structure-property relationships of some PI derivatives were summarized systemically. At last, all the reported highly efficient nondoped deep blue emitters were summed up in order to comprehensively evaluate the potentials of PI derivatives in organic light emitting diodes( OLEDs) in the future.

Abstract:The development of organic electroluminescence (EL) materials has attracted much attention from academic and industrial groups due to their potential for application in full-colour flat panel displays.The dis- plays have many merits,such as low operating voltage,wide viewing angle,fast video response,and so on. The three primary colors,red,green,and blue,are essential to achieve full color displays.Although the red and green EL materials seem to have attained sufficiently high efficiencies and lifetimes for commercial appli- cations,many challenges remain for improvement in the blue spectral region in terms of efficiency,durability in air,and spectral stability (color purity).In recent years,polytluorene and its derivatives have been exten- sively studied for blue LEDs due to their wonderful performance in organic electroluminescence,exceptionally high solubility,high photoluminescence quantum yields in the solid state,good charge transport properties and easy designing synthetic route.So they are very promising candidates for blue Organic Light-Emitting Diodes (OLEDs),and can be used as light-emitting layers,hole-transporting layers,hole buffer layers,etc.This paper reviews the development of polyfluorene and its derivatives used in OLEDs,it is divided in four parts. The first part is the background and the basic principle of organic electroluminescence.The second part intro- duces the blue,red,green,and white light-emitting polyfluorene and its derivatives,and the common synthe- sis methods including paUadium (0)-mediated Suzuki polycondensation,Ni(0)-mediated polymerization, Gilch polymerization method,Ullmann condensation,and Yamamoto polycondensation,etc.The third part reviews the development of devices based on polyfluorene and its derivatives,including doping EL devices, exciplex emitting OLEDs,and the influence of structure of EL devices on the EL performance.The last one gives a prospect of the development and application of the organic ehctroluminescence devices.
Highly Efficient Deep-Blue Electroluminescence Based on the Triphenylamine-Cored and Peripheral Blue Emitters with Segregative HOMO–LUMO Characteristics

Abstract:To obtain highly efficient and stable blue electroluminescence, two novel star-shaped compounds are purposefully designed and synthesized, which are composed of two functional groups, central triphenylamine (TPA) and peripheral anthracene (AN) or phenanthrene (PA) with obviously segregative electronic density distribution characteristics between the highest occupied molecular orbital and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO and LUMO). As a light-emitting layer, they exhibit not only highly efficient deep-blue electroluminescence, but also good stability in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) due to the combination of several advantageous properties (electrochemical, thermal and morphological stability). In particular, for triphenylamine-cored phenanthrene (TPA-PA), the external quantum efficiency of 7.23% is the best reported result for non-doped deep-blue OLEDs, and the lifetime of the device is also improved, being twice that of 2-methyl-9,10-di(2-naphthyl) anthracene (MADN) under the same device conditions.

Abstract:The combination of electrooxidation and photooxidation efficiently decomposes the high-energy triplets of emitters, which is the main reason for the unavailablilty of stable blue thermally activated delayed fuorescence (TADF) OLEDs. The lightning represents photooxidation and the stream represents electrooxidation. The process of electrooxidation and photooxidation in TADF emitters can be suppressed though molecule design and device engineering, as reported by C. Adachi and co-workers on page 7620. Finally, the sky-blue TADF OLEDs realize an increase of three orders of magnitude in device lifetime following these principles.

Abstract:For several decades,the progress of full-color inorganic electroluminescent display technology has been hampered by the low luminance of blue-emitting phosphor.Therefore it has become the subject of intense world-wide research efforts in the field of inorganic electroluminescence to develop blue-emitting phosphors with high luminance,high efficiency,good chromaticity and practical life time.Since its breakthrough discovery in 1999,the rapid improvement of the new generation of blue phosphors represented by europium-doped barium thioaluminate finally re-wrote the history of inorganic EL displays with flying colors.Efforts made in recent years in the improvement of EL performance of europium-doped barium thioaluminate phosphors have been reviewed in this article.These include composition optimization,deposition methods,post-annealing conditions,anti-moisture treatments,oxidation control and passivation layers.The challenges and the prospects of the new blue phosphors in EL display application are also analyzed.

Abstract:Abstract Luminescent metal halides, as a type of luminescent semiconductor material, offer advantages that fulfill the requirements of emerging light source devices, such as high luminescence efficiency, good thermal stability, and tunable colorful emission. Blue light being one of the three primary colors plays a crucial role in the field of lighting and colorful displays. However, the progress in device performance of blue‐light materials lags behind that of green and red‐light materials. Currently, there have been numerous reports on metal halide perovskite blue‐light materials, but a comprehensive review on the development and performance control of blue‐light metal halides is yet to be found. This paper provides a comprehensive summary of the design strategies and luminescence mechanisms of blue‐light perovskites with various luminescence centers, as well as their application progress in the fields of light‐emitting diodes (LEDs), X‐ray scintillators, information anti‐counterfeiting and encryption. It also explores possible directions for subsequent performance improvement. This work aims to offer valuable insights and recommendations for the future development of blue‐light metal halides, with significant implications for the fabrication of novel blue light devices and advancements in detection technology.

Abstract:By placing a hole blocking layer between the polymer and the metallic electrode, we have achieved improved efficiencies for blue electroluminescent devices fabricated with poly (N-vinylcarbazole) doped with 1, 1, 4, 4, -tetraphenyl-1, 3-butadiene as the emitter layer and with aluminum and indium/tin-oxide as the electron and hole injecting electrodes. This bilayer device yields bright blue emission having intensity of 300 cd/m(2), in same case the devices without hole blocking layer have luminance of only 44 cd/m(2).

Abstract:A new light-emitting copolymer [poly(distyrylbenzene-block-tri(ethylene oxide)) (DSB-TEO)], containing alternating rigid, conjugated distyrylbenzene as light-emitting units and flexible tri(ethylene oxide) as ionic conductive units, was synthesized via Wittig reaction. The polymer has fairly good solubility in chloroform and excellent film-forming ability. Single-layer and double-layer light-emitting diodes with indium tin oxide anodes and calcium cathodes were fabricated, and the photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL) properties were investigated. Single layer light emitting diode with DSB-TEO as the active layer(ITO/PEDOT:PSS/DSB-TEO/Ca) showed bright blue emission with luminance over 450 cd/m(2) and efficiency of 0.1 cd/A. Inserting a thin layer of Alq3 between the copolymer and the cathode improved the device performance, luminance over 1000 cd/m(2) and efficiency of 0.5 cd/A could be achieved. The enhanced emission in the longer wave part due to Alq(3) contribution is negligible. This polymer may also be a good candidate material for light emitting electrochemical cells (LECs).

Abstract:Abstract: Organic light emitting diode (OLED) is a device that uses organic semiconductor materials to emit light under the action of an electric field. Compared with traditional luminescent materials, they have the advantages of good softness, low-temperature resistance, wider field of vision and low energy consumption, and have been widely used in the field of display and lighting in recent years. In addition, compared with red and green light-emitting materials, the maximum external quantum efficiency of blue-light materials-based devices is high, but the CIE coordinate performance is poor and the blue emission is difficult to achieve high efficiency and high color purity at the same time. Researchers continue to design new molecular structures in order to synthesize new high-efficiency blue light materials. It is found that different molecular structures have different effects on the performance of OLED devices. In the design and synthesis of blue-light materials, various light-emitting groups are often used to regulate the stability, singlet-third-line state of the target molecule energy level difference, excited state lifetime, aggregation state structure, electricity luminescent color and its OLED performance, etc. The introduction of different light-emitting groups into the blue light material greatly improves the performance of the material. This paper mainly reviews the research status of blue organic electroluminescent materials in the past five years from different molecular structures, further discusses the photoelectric properties of each compound and the properties of devices based on this material, and briefly analyzes the advantages of molecular design and device production. And finally discusses the improvement methods of blue OLED light-emitting materials in order to provide a reference for future research.
