Abstract:The paper aimed that analyzing the fat composition and the differences of fatty acids composition and content appear in different walnut varieties kernel by the method of gas chromatography(GC).The results showed that the fat contents were about 66% in all of the walnut kernel.12 kinds of fatty acids,including Tetradecanoic(C14∶0),Palmitic(C16∶0),Palmitoleic(C16∶1n7),Heptadecanoicn(C17∶0),Cis-10-Heptadecenoic Heptadecanoicn(C17∶1n7),Stearic(C18∶0),Oleic(C18∶1n9c),Linoleic(C18∶2n6c),α-linolenic(C18∶3n3),Arachidic(C20∶0),Cis-11-Eiscosenoic(C20∶1),Docosanoic(C22∶0)were detected in the six walnut varieties kernels.The carbon numbers of the fatty acids were mainly between 16 and 18.The fatty acids in walnut kernel mainly included Polyunsaturated fatty acid and Monounsaturated fatty acid,less saturated fatty acid.The varieties of Qinglin and Yuanlin had the highest and the lowest Linoleic acid contents,reached to 42.19 g/100g and 36.12 g/100g,respectively.

Abstract:Objective:To compare and analyse the chemical compositions and their relative contents of volatile oils from Citrus Bergamot extracted by steam distillation method and supercritical fluid extraction(SFE) method.Methods:Gas chromatography and mass spectrometry(GC-MS) combining computer retrieval were used for separating and identifying the chemical compositions of volatile oils from Citrus Bergamot.Chromatographic peak area normalization method was used for calculating their relative content of compositions.Results:18 chemical compositions were obtained from Bergamot volatile oils by steam distillation method and 16 chemical compositions were identified by SFE method.The main components isolated by both methods were D-limonene.The steam distillation method showed its content was 57.87%and the SFE method reported 81.18%.In addition to D-limonene,the steam distillation also identified 25.12%(+)-2-carene,but it was not obtained by SFE method.Conclusion:The results of the two extraction methods varied,however both identified the main component as D-limonene.The percentage of D-limonene was found to be higher with the SFE method.

Abstract:The seed of Chinese torreya(Torreya grandis var.merriii) is a special rare native nut in China.This research focused on the fatty acid and unsaponifiable matter composition of its seed oil determined by GC/MS.Results showed that linoleic acid and oleic acid were most abundant with mass fraction of 39.60% and 35.40%,followed by palmitic acid(10.24%) and sciadonic acid(all-cis-5,11,14-eicosatrienoic acid,8.65%).Sciadonic acid is an unusual fatty acid,which is first reported in Torreya seed oil in China.In other side,β-sitosterol and β-tocopherol were main unsaponifiable components with respective contents of 1.10 mg/g and 0.51 mg/g.These data would be helpful for the further development and utilization of Chinese torreya seed oil as functional food.
Analysis of Lipids in Meat Products by Iatroscan TLC/FID

Abstract:Objective:the present study was to investigate the lipid contents and compositions of the common available flosses and canned-meats in Hangzhou using Iatroscan TLC/FID. Methods: we purchased 4-brand pork flosses and canned-meat from different supermarket in Hangzhou. The lipids were extracted by chloroform-methanol(2∶1,V/V),followed by separation and purification. Lipid classes were separated and identified by Iatroscan TLC/FID by comparison with lipid standard. Results were calculated using response factors derived from chromatograph peak area. Total lipids content of the pork flosses was ranged from 9.6%(Feng Cheng)to 20.7%(Wei Xin)(P=0.002,ANOVA). In the analyzed pork floss samples,more than 90% of lipids were triacylglycerol,and there was significant difference between the samples(P<0.001,ANOVA). There were no significant differences on phospholipid content between pork floss samples. In the canned-meats, total lipids content was ranged from 13.7%(stewed beef)to 35.3%(boiled pork)(P<0.0001,ANOVA). Triacylglycerol was significant difference between all the samples of the canned-meat(P<0.0001 ANOVA). Stewed beef contained lowest total lipids in all canned meat, however, its phospholipid content was higher than others(P<0.01,t-test). The present results indicated that Iatroscan TLC/FID is powerful tool for food lipid analysis. It is a good method with fast,brief,accurate and low amount of reagent. The contents of total lipid,phospholipids and triacylglycerols in the analyzed samples were varied between brands.

Abstract:The fatty acid composition in muscle of Misgurnus anguillicaudatus was determined by gas chromatograph to know the nutritional value of Misgurnus anguillicaudatus.The results showed that there were 5 saturated fatty acids and 6 unsaturated fatty acids in muscle of Misgurnus anguillicaudatus,the mass fraction of saturated fatty acid and unsaturated fatty acid accounted for 31.81% and 68.15% of total fatty acid mass fraction respectively,the mass fraction of monounsaturated fatty acid and polyunsaturated fatty acid accounted for 34.46% and 33.69% respectively,the fatty acid in muscle of Misgurnus anguillicaudatus was mainly composed of C18:2n-6,C18:1 and C16:0,and the C18:2n-6 content was the highest in three main fatty acids.There is a certain difference in fatty acid composition between Misgurnus anguillicaudatus and other fishes.
Fatty acid content and nutritional evaluation of Yunnan purple kernel walnut

Abstract:Comparing with Yunnan sigillate walnut,the fatty acid compositions of twenty-eight purple kernel walnuts samples were analysed.The results showed that the contents of palmitic acid,palmitoleic acid,stearic acid,oleic acid,linoleic acid,linolenic acid,arachidic acid and arachidonic acid were3.70%-7.68%,0.02%-0.48%,0-2.80%,15.80%-43.16%,44.67%-67.80%,4.10%-10.40%,0-0.29% and 0-0.22%,respectively.The analysis results of variation,correlation and principal component of the fatty acid content showed that the greatest variation was arachidic acid,and the less variations were palmitic acid and linoleic acid; oleic acid had great negative correlation with linoleic acid and linolenic acid; the accumulative contribution of the first three principal components reached 75.028%,which almost included the main information of all the eight fatty acids contents; the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation on fatty acid contents and nutritional characteristics of purple kernel walnut was carried out,and the fatty acid contents and nutritional values of twenty-seven purple kernel walnuts samples were higher than those of sigillate walnut.

Abstract:Walnuts have high oil content in their kernels, and they have attracted considerable attention in the food, beverage, nutrient, and health fields because of their delicious taste and potential health benefits. Fatty acid profiles of kernels vary depending on walnuts species, ontogenic variations, and planting environments. To determine the key indicators that can be used to distinguish different walnuts using chemometric analyses, the fatty acid compositions and contents of 72 walnut samples were measured and evaluated. Three fatty acids, oleic acid (21.66%), linoleic acid (56.40%), and linolenic acid (10.50%), were the most common fatty acid components in the kernels. Palmitic acid and linolenic acid in kernels were found to be indicators to rank the walnuts into five levels. Three groups were identified based on of several chemometrics. Oleic acid in kernels was typical fatty acid that could be used to distinguish three walnut groups based on the results of discriminant analysis, while oleic acid and linoleic acid were key differential fatty acids on the discrimination of each group based on the result of orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis. This study provides information on how to classify walnuts from different geographical locations based on kernel fatty acid profiling and provides an approach to identify possible adulterations in walnuts on the markets. Moreover, the results are potentially relevant to quality assessments of walnuts.

Abstract:Abstract This article presents findings from a qualitative study concerning drug injectors' constructs of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) risk behavior. Analysis of data obtained from in-depth interviews (some with a vignette) of drug injectors found that when individuals needed an injection of drugs and were experiencing drug withdrawal they were more likely to take drug injecting risks. This was often discussed within an overall preoccupation with drug use. The substantive focus of the analysis goes on to explore drug injectors' desire to think about the consequences of HIV risk behavior at a later point in time. These exploratory findings highlight how further research needs to be undertaken in order to improve understanding of the temporal issues concerning drug injecting HIV risk behavior.

Abstract:Walnut is a precious marketed nut characterised by kernels containing more than 60% of oil. Gas chromatography (GC) is the most used method to analyse oils; nonetheless, polyunsaturated (PUFA)s and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA)s were not separated sufficiently. Therefore, our study is based on the employment of two GC systems with different columns. However, for determination of PUFAs and MUFAs composition, 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) seems to be a promising technique by showing the resonance for each unsaturated fatty acids (UFA)s in olefinic region, and also for saturated fatty acids (SFA) in the aliphatic region. 13C NMR was able to distinguish between fatty acid isomers such as oleic (C18:1 Δ9) and vaccenic (C18:1 Δ11) acid. In addition, different fatty acid length with same position of unsaturated carbon were distinguished and determined by 13C NMR, for instance between vaccenic (C18:1 Δ11) and eicosenoic (C20:1 Δ11) acid. NMR quantification takes the advantages of chemical shifts to accurately calculate fatty acid contents for both saturated and unsaturated one. Besides providing the full profile of fatty acids, this study adds information regarding quantitative and qualitative composition of walnut oil. This can expand the analytical methods used to improve the knowledge of nutritional values of oil and food products.Graphical abstract

Abstract:A simple and rapid methyl esterification technique for edible oils and a high-throughput procedure for the separation and quantification of fatty acid methyl esters including cis/trans isomers by fast GC using a highly polar ionic liquid column have been established. The developed method was successfully applied to the determination of trans fatty acid contents in commercially available edible oils, such as margarine, fat spread, shortening, olive oil, rapeseed oil, salad oil, and sesame oil. Combining the developed methyl esterification and fast GC techniques reduced the time required for the analysis of one edible oil specimen to less than 30 min; thus, the analysis time was shortened substantially to less than one-third that required in the existing official methods such as those of the American Oil Chemists’ Society and Japanese Oil Chemists’ Society. The contents determined by the developed method agreed with those determined by the existing official methods, thus confirming the reliability of the fast GC method.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To analyze and identify fatty acids in the seeds of Sterculia lychnophora.METHOD:The compositions was isolated and determined by GC-MS technique, and area normalization method was used to make quantitative analyze of the content of compositions.RESULTS:21 Fatty acids and 5 other compositions were isolated and determined.CONCLUSION:The major fatty acids are 9,12(Z,Z)-octadecadienoic acid(37.96%), hexadecanoic acid(24.77%), 9-(Z)-octadecenoic acid(19.77%) and octadecanoic acid(5.01%).

Abstract:Almond trees are the most cultivated nut tree in the world. The production of almonds generates large amounts of by-products, much of which goes unused. Herein, this study aimed to develop a green chemistry approach to identify and extract potentially valuable compounds from almond by-products. Initially, a screening was performed with 10 different Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (NADESs). The mixture lactic acid/glycerol, with a molar ratio 1:1 (1:50 plant material to NADES (w/v) with 20% v/v of water) was identified as the best extraction solvent for catechin, caffeoylquinic acid, and condensed tannins in almond hulls. Subsequently, a method was optimized by a Design of Experiment (DoE) protocol using a miniaturized extraction technique, Microwave-Assisted Extraction (MAE), in conjunction with the chosen NADESs. The optimal conditions were found to be 70 °C with 15 min irradiation time. The optimal extraction conditions determined by the DoE were confirmed experimentally and compared to methods already established in the literature. With these conditions, the extraction of metabolites was 2.4 times higher, according to the increase in total peak area, than the established literature methods used. Additionally, by applying the multiparameter Analytical Greenness Metric (AGREE) and Green Analytical Process Index (GAPI) metrics, it was possible to conclude that the developed method was greener than the established literature methods as it includes various principles of green analytical chemistry.

Abstract:Almonds ( Prunus dulcis Mill.) are consumed worldwide and their geographical origin plays a crucial role in determining their market value. In the present study, a total of 250 almond reference samples from six countries (Australia, Spain, Iran, Italy, Morocco, and the USA) were non-polar extracted and analyzed by UPLC-ESI-IM-qToF-MS. Four harvest periods, more than 30 different varieties, including both sweet and bitter almonds, were considered in the method development. Principal component analysis showed that there are three groups of samples with similarities: Australia/USA, Spain/Italy and Iran/Morocco. For origin determination, a random forest achieved an accuracy of 88.8 %. Misclassifications occurred mainly between almonds from the USA and Australia, due to similar varieties and similar external influences such as climate conditions. Metabolites relevant for classification were selected using Surrogate Minimal Depth, with triacylglycerides containing oxidized, odd chained or short chained fatty acids and some phospholipids proven to be the most suitable marker substances. Our results show that focusing on the identified lipids (e. g., using a QqQ-MS instrument) is a promising approach to transfer the origin determination of almonds to routine analysis.

Abstract:Rationale: Various medium formulations contain essential fatty acids at concentrations ranging from 10 to 100 mg/L. Accurate and precise lipid measurement in media is crucial for monitoring media quality and conducting studies on lipids in the context of cell culture. This study employed two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC × GC) analyses to offer enhanced resolution, sensitivity, and separation performance compared to GC. Methods: Quantification of fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) in a medium was conducted using GC × GC combined with a high-resolution mass spectrometer and flame ionization detector, considering potential interference from nonionic surfactant Tween 80, which was precipitated and removed by optimizing the concentration of cobalt thiocyanate (CTA) solution during pretreatment. This advanced analytical approach enabled identification of cis and trans isomers of identical molecular weights and determination of the location and number of double bonds in the same carbon number structure. Results: Our analysis identified 36 FAMEs within the C6-C24 region, and a 5% CTA solution was optimal for efficient removal of Tween 80 during lipid extraction. Additionally, this advanced method minimized FAME contamination and loss during pretreatment, thereby significantly reducing the sample volume required to detect trace levels of FAMEs. This improvement led to a fatty acid recovery rate of 106% while maintaining the average relative standard deviation for the target FAMEs of about 3%. Conclusions: Our research paves the way for future investigation into medium quality control and the role of fatty acids in cell culture. This offers the possibility for economical and effective trace quantification of fatty acids in complex media.

Abstract:Processing is a traditional pharmacy technology based on traditional Chinese medicine theory. The traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) ingredients should be processed before being used as a medicine. Processed bitter almonds are widely used in the clinic in TCM for the treatment of cough and asthma. In this work the amygdalin profile of three producing areas in China was determined, with respect to three differently processed bitter almond products: raw, stir-fried and scalded. Identification of the compounds was done by using high performance liquid chromatography coupled to electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS/MS). Results indicated that amygdalin, neoamygdalin and amygdalin amide were identified in the different processed bitter almonds. Meanwhile, amygdalin was used as a standard to calculate the quantification of amygdalin and the concentration ratio of neoamygdalin and total amygdalin by HPLC-DAD. The data suggested that composition of amygdalin isomers in bitter almonds was influenced by the processing method. It also gives a new understanding of the processing principle of bitter almonds. Moreover, the classification of different processed bitter almonds can be achieved on the basis of amygdalin isomers levels.

Abstract:Fatty acids (FAs) are carboxylic acids with long aliphatic chains that may be straight, branched and saturated or unsaturated. Most of the naturally occurring plant FAs contains an even number of carbon (C4-C24). FAs are used in food and pharmacological industries due to their nutritional importance. In addition, FAs are considered as a promising alternative for the production of biodiesel from terrestrial plant biomass. To establish commercial applications, more reliable analytical methods are needed for the identification, quantification, and composition determination of FAs. Here, we describe a relatively rapid and sensitive method for the extraction, identification, and quantification of FAs from a small quantity of plant tissue. The method includes steps of lipid extraction, conversion of lipid to fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) by transmethylation, identification and quantification of FAMEs using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). In this protocol, an internal standard is added prior to GC-MS analysis. The amount of each FA is calculated from its peak area relative to the peak area of the internal standard.

Abstract:The effects of three sample pretreatment methods,i.e.the solvent extraction(SE),the solid-phase microextraction(SPME)and the microwave-assisted solid-phase microextraction(MAE-SPME)were investigated on the analysis of strawberry volatiles with the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS)method.By MAE-SPME,85 volatile components were detected,of which,53 components were esters and the rest were aldehydes,ketones,alcohols,organic acids,ethers,alkenes,aromatics,heterocyclic compound and so on.Meanwhile,26 and 16 volatile components were detected with SE and SPME respectively.The results indicated that MAE-SPME is a better method for extracting aroma components from fruist.
