Abstract:The traditional Chinese concept of heaven and earth was that the heaven was spherical whereas earth was square, and that China, as a nation of high civilization, dwelled in center of heaven and earth, thus leading to Sino-centrism. Such concept was impacted when western missionaries brought western calendar and geography to China in later Ming and early Qing dynasties, but it was far from uprooted. As a result, false and self-conceited ideas and such conservative thoughts as those putting old traditional Chinese ideas into new western bottle arose. The astrology and geography introduced from west around Opium War was more revolutionary: on one hand, it regarded both heaven and earth and man as result of universal evolution — not only earth has no center, but universe as well, with man as outcome of long evolution of universe; on other hand, it brought medieval theological teleology to an end and gave a boost to development of democratic ideas. Therefore, introduction of astrology and geography hereafter helped democratic ideas burgeoning in late Ming and early Qing dynasties to become main stream. From publication of An Illustrated Gazetteer of Maritime Countries and A Brief Introduction to Countries in World, we can see influence of introduction of European astrology and geography after capitalist revolution and industrial revolution on Chinese academic circles.
