Abstract:Digital media,represented by computing and the web,have brought about a transformation in Chinese literature through irresistible technological force while restricting and limiting the connotations of this transformation,playing a dual role of “enlightenment” and “destruction” in the historical evolution of Chinese literature.The new media have brought about a fundamental change in the aesthetic structure,system of expression and space-time concepts of literature and have harmed and even alienated the inheritance of literary tradition.The former is manifested by the fact that using the narrative style of the ordinary people has prompted literature to turn towards a “new folk writing” style,using technological means to win more freedom for art,and bringing about in-depth conceptual readjustments in literature through the new concepts of “word thought” and “entertaining others by entertaining oneself.” The latter is expressed in the fact that technology destroys the characteristics of literature and reduces the responsibility of writers as a body and that technological reproduction weakens faith in classical literature.At the turn of the new century,Chinese literature has to hold to its original humanistic spirit,voluntarily fulfill its promises with regard to literary values,and improve the reliance of literature on technology through regulation and self-discipline,so that the challenge that digital media present to tradition will become an opportunity for a literary renascence and the new media will become a powerful driver and effective resource for Chinese literature in the new century.
