Abstract:Real-time 3-D acoustical imaging technique is a key advance to broaden the scope and enhance the feasibility of underwater missions. In this paper, a real-time 3-D underwater acoustical imaging system to handle the actual tasks under a narrowband excitation is presented. The system consists of three parts: a transmitter, a receiving hydrophone array, and a signal processor. In this system, a distributed and parallel subarray (DPS) beamforming algorithm is proposed to process the acquired signals from a scene placed in the far field. The DPS beamforming algorithm is an approximate method for the sonar signal processing with an advantageous computational efficiency. The direct method (DM) and fast Fourier transform (FFT) beamforming are compared with DPS beamforming for the memory and computational requirements. Based on this algorithm, a prototype was developed, which has been extensively employed in the lake and sea trials. The trials demonstrate that the system can achieve the 3-D imaging of the scene and meet the real-time requirement of the underwater operations.

Abstract:Underwater acoustic communication is one of the key technologies in various important research fields, such as ocean geography, offshore oil industry and defense. However, conventional system design can not achieve desirable results, since the underwater channel suffers a lot from multipath propagation and Doppler Effect. In this paper, we aim to introduce a type of coherent underwater acoustic communication system, which combine the joint synchronization and equalization scheme and the joint iterative equalization and decoding technique to combat the severe underwater environment mentioned above. The platform belongs to the physical layer and can take various high layer applications. The proposed system is tested in computer simulated scenarios and experimental data, both of which demonstrate good performance.

Abstract:The invention discloses an underwater cross-medium communication and water surface target detection and tracking integrated system. The system carries out detection and tracking on a water surface target according to the echo intensity while sensing the weak vibration of a water surface through the echo phase change of a frequency-modulated continuous wave radar for cross-medium communication. Thesystem comprises an underwater acoustic transducer used for transmitting modulated communication underwater acoustic signals underwater, and a millimeter wave radar system used for detecting a watersurface target in the air. Sound waves emitted by the underwater acoustic transducer can generate weak vibration on the water surface, modulation signals carried by the sound waves can be extracted byutilizing the weak change of the phase of echo signals reflected by the radar water surface, and corresponding communication signals can be obtained through modulation processing. While underwater cross-medium communication is carried out, the echo intensity of the radar in other areas is utilized to detect and track the water surface target, and the method is suitable for the field of radar communication integration.

Abstract:With the need of AUV research, we have made a sonar image processing system which is equipped in Chinese 'Explorer' AUV. Based on TMS320C30 high speed DSP, the system is used to realize sonar image compression and underwater object detection including obstacle recognition in real time. Pool and sea testing have been finished and shown good performance. In this paper, the system algorithm, software and hardware are introduced and the experimental results are given.

Abstract:This paper introduces the realization of a wideband MIMO underwater acoustic (UWA) communication experimental system. The system aims at the inherent characteristics of shallow sea acoustic channel with reasonable hardware design. The DT9836 and the DT9816 are used as multifunction data acquisition (DAQ) modules for transmitter and receiver respectively. The USB is used as the communication interface between the underlying hardware equipment and the host computer with QuickDAQ software. The system is verified for its reliability and practicability through the experiments in an anechoic tank and Zhoushan shallow sea area.
Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing Underwater Acoustic Communications with Time Reversal Processing

Abstract:In dispersive underwater channels where impulse responses commonly last tens of milliseconds, large symbol durations and guard intervals are needed for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) acoustic communications, which could introduce severe inter-carrier interferences and reduces effective data rate. This paper presents a scheme of OFDM transmission combined with passive time reversal processing, which has been demonstrated as a promising self-adaptive technique to compensate for multipath distortion explicitly due to its spatial focusing and temporal compressing characteristics. Using time reversal as a preprocessing step prior to OFDM, the equivalent channel impulse response is greatly shortened; moderate symbol durations and guard intervals can thus be used the same way as in conventional OFDM schemes. Moreover, to improve the robustness in harsh-environment applications, Reed Solomon channel coding is exploited for its good performance against burst errors caused by channel fading and ambient burst noise. Tradeoffs between data rate and robustness are discussed along with the transmission scheme. Finally some field experimental results are presented, which demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed approach. [Work supported by Chinese 863 high-tech program under Grant 2009AA093601]

Abstract:In order to realize the goal of underwater environment monitoring and data acquisition,this paper designs and implements a set of data acquisition and transmission system based on Autonomous Underwater Vehicle ( AUV) ,which is used in the underwater sensor network. The system adopts two MCU with distributed processing mechanism. It also adopts the suitable frame for data storage and communication and ARQ protocol to make sure the reliable data transmission and storage,which make it possible for a long time environmental and sensor working state monitoring. Several experiment results in lake show that the system not only has good stability and real time but also satisfies the demands of data acquisition and transmission,which is of great value to the mobile node design of the underwater sensor network.

Abstract:Due to cost reduction and device miniaturization, amateur drones are now widely used in numerous civilian and commercial applications. However, the abuse of amateur drones has resulted in emerging threats to personal privacy and public security. To alleviate these threats, we design an acoustic-based surveillance system, which can achieve the capacity of amateur drones detection and localization with 24/7 (24 hours per day and 7 days per week under normal circumstances) availability. In the designed system, a detection fusion algorithm and a TDOA estimation algorithm based on the Bayesian filter are applied to improve the performance of drone detection and localization. Field experiments are carried out, and the results demonstrate that the designed system can detect and locate an amateur drone in real time with high accuracy and 24/7 availability.
Experimental Studies of Time-Reversal Underwater Acoustic Communications

Abstract:Underwater acoustic communication is a key research topic in 3D ocean environmental monitoring network. This paper presents the results of an active/passive time-reversal communication experiment conducted in a waveguide tank. The results show that, in the presence of multi-path propagation, time-reversal processing achieves quite good focalization both spatially and temporally of the transmitted signal, thus efficiently mitigating inter-symbol interferences and inter-user interferences. Combining time-reversal with adaptive equalization can attain a communication performance similar to that of other popular methods, while the implementation complexity can be significantly reduced; it can also be readily implemented in a multi-user communication framework. The experimental results provide further evidences that the time-reversal technique can be a quite promising option for realizing high-speed, highly reliable data communication and multi-user communication in a complex underwater acoustic channel.

Abstract:With the development of underwater acoustic technique,the underwater warfare becomes more and more complicated.The appearance of active acoustic decoy which can simulate target echo provides very important help to the countermeasure of active acoustic torpedo and active sonar.This paper first analyzes the principle of the echo simulator working in acoustic decoy,and then a method for estimating a series of echo characteristic parameters,such as the signal pulse width,doppler frequency shift,time delay and signal broadening,target strength and maximal echo intensity,is given.And an echo signal simulation result of echo simulator which can counterwork acoustic torpedo and active sonar at the same time is given.It provides a valuable reference for studying the technology of underwater acoustic countermeasure.

Abstract:A cross-medium communication can be accomplished by using acoustic waves to induce vibrations on the water surface, which can then be detected by airborne radars. Using this method, it is possible to communicate without relay between underwater and air-borne devices, which sheds the light on a wide variety of potential applications. However, few theoretical and experimental studies on it are found. Since 2019, we have developed theoretical studies on this topic and conducted experiments in lakes, swimming pools, and anechoic pools. Further, we investigated the impact of various factors on communication from our experimental results. These factors included: the frequency, bandwidth, and modulation of the communication signals, the number and depth of underwater sources, the location and height of the radar, and water surface waves in the surrounding environment. In this paper, we describe the experimental system and based on the experimental results, analyze the impacts of the above factors on cross-medium communication. All of these studies are expected to lay a basis for future cross-medium communication applications.

Abstract:Direct acoustic communication between underwater and airborne nodes has always been considered unfeasible due to the energy loss caused by the strong surface reflection of sound waves. However, contrary to popular belief, our study demonstrates that underwater transducers can effectively transmit detectable acoustic signals in the air. To investigate this phenomenon, we conducted an experiment involving the deployment of an underwater transducer at a depth of 1 m, while an unoccupied aerial vehicle equipped with a voice recorder was positioned at various altitudes ranging from 2 to 30 m and horizontal distances of 0–30 m. Sound pressure levels were measured at 20 different positions within the frequency range of 10–20kHz, and orthogonal frequency division multiplex acoustic communication signals were recorded at specific positions. Our findings reveal the successful establishment of a direct acoustic communication link between the water and air interface, achieving a data rate of 4.565 kbps. This study opens up new possibilities for practical applications in underwater-to-air communication systems.

Abstract:Abstract Underwater acoustic communication technology is the core technology in the marine field, occupying a very important position, and has an important supporting role for underwater observation operations and military activities. Underwater acoustic technology is currently the most widely used and longest underwater wireless communication technology. With the increasing demand for development, the complexity of underwater acoustic channels, underwater environment and other factors make the communication speed, communication distance and communication stability of underwater acoustic communication greatly restricted. Despite these limitations, underwater acoustic communication is still valued by professionals from various countries and industries, and has been developed and applied to some extent. This article summarizes the basic content of underwater acoustic communication technology, leads to its general structure as a communication system, the current development of underwater acoustic communication technology, and the characteristics of underwater acoustic communication systems due to the characteristics of underwater acoustic channels. This article summarizes the development and some applications of the underwater acoustic communication system and the full text and some prospects for the future underwater acoustic communication.

Abstract:In this paper, a long-term ship-monitoring system is designed based on a vector hydrophone. It enables the detection and localization of ships at sea. This system equipped with a vector hydrophone is installed on an ocean buoy or an off-shore platform, and uses a field programmable gate array (FPGA) and a microcontroller as the control cores to automatically collect ocean noise for further analysis. The detection of ship presence or absence is achieved through sound energy calculation using the vector hydrophone signal, followed by a comparison with an adaptive threshold. Additionally, cross spectrum analysis is applied to estimate the direction of arrival (DOA) of the ship. The system's performance is evaluated through simulations and sea trials. Their results demonstrates its capability of target detection and DOA estimation. This study is expected to meet the practical requirements for intelligent ocean monitoring applications.

Abstract:Along with the development of the science, the communication technology has already developed from the traditional air to the outer space and submarine. So, the UAC is getting more and more attentions from the researchers for its business and military value. However the local hydrology environment and the weather must be considered when the actual UAC experiments are carried and the experimental cost is so expensive that it is hard to carry on enough experiments([1]). What's more, There isn't a software that can compare all these algorithms conveniently, although there are many algorithms nowadays for UAC([2]). This paper studies to construct a software which can combine many algorithms and compare them in one unified frame. Also the software can help us design actual experiment system to obtain more valuable data in limited time.

Abstract:Based on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), an acoustic logging array sonde testing system is designed to strengthen the debugging efficiency of acoustic logging tool development and field failure diagnosis. The system is applied to acoustic logging testing. By comparing and analyzing theoretical simulation data and actual measurement statistics, the testing system is found to be capable of testing the validity and consistency of the acoustic sonde receiving channels, evaluating the performance of monopole and dipole models of the acoustic transmitting sonde separately, as well as calibrating the transducer array for the reference of actual acoustic logging. This testing system mainly includes two parts: client server structure based on embedded uCLinux system and internetworking; FPGA-based acoustic transmitting and receiving devices and corresponding data processing modules. The newly-designed testing system not only allows quick check of the acoustic sonde's work state, but also improves the hierarchy and scientificity of logging tool development and maintenance processes, and logging tool debugging and diagnosing efficiency.

Abstract:Software Defined Radio(SDR) is a radio communication system where components that have been implemented in specific hardware circuits are instead implemented using software on high-speed digital signal processors,This system has some advantages like flexible,multi-mode,reconfigurable and easy to upgrade.The SDR related concepts,characters and architecture is introduced.Relying on the change of future digital battlefield,the broad application prospects of SDR in the military field have been investigated.Finally,based on the unified SDR platform developed by Tsinghua University,a waveform is conducted to realize a specialized communication system in the reconfigurable satellite communications platform.

Abstract:In recent years, ocean exploration is more and more popular in the world and underwater acoustic communication networks are becoming useful. As a result, it is important to have a research tool that is easy to learn for underwater network research. This paper introduces a kind of program architecture used for underwater network simulation. It is based on two key methods, which are discrete events and finite state machines. It can simulate main process of physical-layer communication, MAC and route protocols in network. As for communication in physical layer, signal to noise ratio (SNR) of a received signal at a node can be calculated. Furthermore, the process of two signals colliding together at a node can also be simulated and signal to interference and noise ratio (SINR) can be calculated. Process of MAC and route protocols can also be simulated, such as backoff and timing, handshaking and searching for routes.Comparing with other network simulation software, such as OPNET and NS2, the program introduced in this paper has an advantage, which is easy and testable. It can be implemented using C programming language and windows operating system. Programmer does not need to spend time to learn LINUX operating system. Programmer can monitor operation status while program running, convenient to debug. It is easy to search for the place where mistake happens.
