Abstract:The crystallographic structure and magnetic behavior of R2(Fe1−xMnx)14B have been studied, where R represents Nd, Pr, and Y. A large coercive force of up to 20 kOe has been observed at 1.5 K in as-cast bulk samples of the pseudoternary compounds. The coercivity does not depend on treatment such as milling, sintering, and annealing. It is intrinsic. The intrinsic coercive iHc shows a composition dependence. The form of the virgin magnetization curves is characterized by a propagation field Hp, indicating that the coercive force is created by domain wall pinning. Based on the magnetic measurements, the domain wall thickness of these compounds was calculated. The magnetic behavior of R2(Fe1−xMnx)14B can be understood in terms of narrow domain walls.

Abstract:The crystallographic and magnetic properties of Y2(Fe1−xAlx) 14B, where x equals 0.00, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, and 0.08, have been investigated by Mössbauer spectroscopy and magnetic measurements at room temperature and 85 K. Magnetic anisotropy and magnetization changes with aluminum substitution indicate that, because of size, the aluminum preferentially occupies the j2 site over the remaining five crystallographically nonequivalent iron sites. This preferential occupation has been confirmed by Mössbauer spectral studies, which indicate that the compositional variation of the hyperfine field for each site is related to the number of near-neighbor aluminum atoms for the site. This compositional variation is helpful in assigning the different spectral components in these alloys as well as in the related Nd2(Fe1−xCox)14B and Y2(Fe1−xCox)14B alloys. In all cases these assignments are consistent with the local symmetry and coordination environment for each site.

Abstract:Magnetic properties of Nd2(Fe1−x Mnx) 14B, where x equals 0.00, 0.10, 0.20, 0.30, and 0.40, are presented. All of these compounds crystallize in the tetragonal structure, space group P42/mnm. X-ray diffraction experiments in a temperature range from 77 to 800 K have been carried out in order to study the anomalous thermal expansion by measuring the thermal variation of the lattice parameters a and c. The effect of substituting Fe with Mn on the thermal expansion anomalies of Nd2(Fe,Mn)14B is discussed in comparison with that of Nd2(Fe,Al)14B and Nd2(Fe,Co)14B.

Abstract:We found that the nitrogen atoms can enter into the R2Fe14B structure by a proper heat treatment in nitrogen atmosphere. The crystallographic structure and magnetic properties of R2Fe14BNx, R=Nd and Y, have been investigated by using x-ray and neutron diffraction techniques as well as magnetic measurements. The neutron diffraction data show that the nitrogen atoms occupy the 4f interstices. The interstitial nitrogen atoms were found to have an effect of enhancing Curie temerature, whereas, decreasing saturation magnetization and magneto-crystalline anisotropy. The relationship of the crystal structure and the intrinsic magnetic properties of this crystal is discussed.

Abstract:Here we investigate the effects of wheel speed and heat treatment on the melt-spun ternary Y2Fe14B alloy, aiming to clarify its structure, phase precipitation and magnetic properties. For directly quenched alloys, the optimum magnetic properties can be achieved when the wheel speed is within a relatively wide range of 30-40 m/s. The Y2Fe14B alloy prepared at 36 m/s shows the highest coercivity of 149 kA/m and remanence of 0.88 T with the maximum energy product (BH)(max) of 6.8 MGOe due to the single hard magnetic phase structure. For the amorphous ribbons prepared at 50 m/s, when the annealing temperature increases from 773 to 1073 K, the alpha-Fe phase precipitates first accompanied by the appearance of Y2Fe14B phase and a small quantity of Fe-B phase. The magnetic properties of annealed samples are much lower than those of the optimized as-spun alloys. The effects of Nd substitution for Y on the structure, magnetic properties and thermal stability of (Y1-xNdx)(2)Fe14B (x = 0-1) alloys have been systematically investigated. The H-cj and (BH)(max) exhibit almost linear increase with the increasing Nd substitution. Relatively low temperature coefficients can be obtained in the Nd substituted alloys. The current results are important for exploring high performance and low cost Y-based rare earth permanent magnets with improved thermal stability.

Abstract:Thermal expansion anomalies of R2(Fe1−xMx)14B (R=Nd and Y; M=Co and Al) have been observed with x-ray powder diffraction in the range from room temperature to 1000 K. All these compounds show an abnormal thermal expansion below the Curie temperature. The substitution effect of Fe by Co and Al on the thermal expansion behavior has been investigated to determine how atomic ordering of these substituent atoms influence the Fe-Fe exchange interactions so as to alter the magnetic properties of the R-Fe-B intermetallic compounds.

Abstract:> This paper addresses the magnetic properties of Nd-Fe (Co,Al,Ga)-B permanent magneticalloys. The crystal occupations of Co,Al,Ga atoms at these alloys have been studied by meansof Mossbauer spectroscopy. The magnets were made by means of powder metallurgy methodwith magnetic properties: B r =1.19 T, iH G =1130kA/m, BH max =262kJ/m 3 , B r =0.04%/℃,T C =450-550℃. The results indicated that the Alatoms mainly occupy the j 2 site, Ga atomspreferentially occupy k 2 site and Co atoms the 8j 2 and 16 k 2 sites. The reason why the Curietemperature rises lies in the fact that the Co atoms have occupied the crystal sites in thetetragonal phase.

Abstract:Aiming to develop the rare earth-iron-boron permanent magnets with high performance/cost ratio, a systematic investigation on the phase structure, microstructure, magnetic properties, and corrosion resistance of melt-spun nanocrystalline (La1-xYx)(2)Fe14B alloys has been carried out. In La based alloys, at least 20 at% Y substitution for La is needed to form hard magnetic 2:14:1 phase. With the increase of Y content, the lattice parameters a, c of 2:14:1 phase decrease and its Curie temperature T-c increases linearly. Y substitution also can effectively enhance the inter-grain exchange coupling and the corrosion resistance of La2Fe14B alloy. The corrosion current density i(corr) decreases from 36.2 mu A/cm(2) to 10.6 mu A/cm(2) in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution with increasing x from 0.2 to 1.0, and all these values are lower than those for nanocrystalline Nd2Fe14B alloy. The hard magnetic properties with maximum energy product (BH)(max) of 2.6 MGOe, remanent polarization J(r) of 0.65 T, and intrinsic coercivity H-cj of 84 kA/m have been obtained in (La0.7Y0.3)(2)Fe14B alloys. Y2Fe14B alloy shows the highest (BH)(max) of 6.8 MGOe, J(r) of 0.88 T, and H-cj of 148 kA/m. This work suggests that La-Y-Fe-B alloys also have the potential for fabricating new and low-cost magnetic materials with performance better than hard ferrites.

Abstract:The crystal structure and magnetic properties of Nd2−xTbxFe17 and NdTbFe17−yAly compounds were studied by means of X-ray diffraction and magnetization measurements. All the samples show the rhombohedral Th2Zn17-type structure with space group R3¯m. For Nd2−xTbxFe17 compounds, the lattice parameters decrease with increasing Tb concentration, and the Curie temperature increases with the Tb content while the saturation magnetization decreases linearly at a rate of 10.54μB/f.u. per Tb atom. For NdTbFe17−yAly compounds, the substitution of Al for Fe leads to an increase in lattice parameters a, c and unit-cell volume V. The Al atoms preferentially occupy 18h site at low Al concentration whereas prefer to occupy 6c and 18f sites at high Al concentration. The Curie temperature increases with Al content up to y=3 then decreases for 3≤y≤8. X-ray diffraction of magnetically pre-aligned samples indicates that the easy magnetization direction of the samples changes from planar to c-axial with increasing aluminum concentration. The saturation magnetization of compounds decreases with increasing Al concentration.

Abstract:Tetragonal R15B7Fe78 (R=MM, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, and Y) compounds have been studied by x-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements. The lattice parameters are found to decrease with increasing atomic number of rare-earth elements, whereas the Curie temperatures TC increase monotonically, and the TC of Gd15B7Fe78 is the highest. The saturation magnetization and magnetocrystalline anisotropy were measured with a field up to 70 kOe at the temperature between 1.5 and 300 K. We found that the c axis is the easy axis of magnetization for R=Pr, Gd, and Y; the easy magnetization direction lies in the basal plane for R=Sm; and the direction of easy magnetization changes with temperature for R=Nd.
Enhanced Magnetic Properties Of Disordered Rhombohedral 2 : 17 Type Alloys

Abstract:A new disordered variant of the R2Fe17 structure (where R is a mixture of rare-earths) was recently described. It is found that more than 1/3 of the R atoms from the parent RT5 phase are replaced by Fe dumbbells, leading to a Fe-rich final composition. The Curie temperature is observed to increase with the dumbbell concentration and exceeds 600K in the best case. The formation of this variant appears to be controlled by the c/a ratio, which was originally adjusted with Si substitution for Fe and by the mixture of light and heavy rare earths. Reexamination of historic data on Y2Fe17+x shows that this structure may also be induced without Si substitution. Thus, this system (with a mixture of light rare earth and Y) shows promise for still higher Curie temperatures and remanence, since the net Fe content can be maximized. A series of alloys have been prepared by induction melting and characterized by neutron diffraction and magnetic measurements. These materials appear to be promising for practical magnet applications. Results on the (Nd0.5Dy0.5)(2-x)Fe17-ySiy and (Nd1-xYx)(2-z)Fe17-ySiy will be presented.

Abstract:The stability and magnetic properties of the R E 6 Fe 13 X compounds, as well as their preferential localization in Nd-Fe-B magnets, have been investigated by first-principles calculations. We find that the R E 6 Fe 13 X ( X = Al, Si, Zn, and Ga) have negative formation energies and are more likely to form in the triple junctions, while Nd 6 Fe 13 Cu with the formation energy of 0.73 eV tends to localize in the thin intergranular phase. These compounds contribute to the exchange decoupling of Nd 2 Fe 14 B grains and thus enhance the coercivity of Nd-Fe-B magnets. Such decoupling can be more pronounced in the cases of Nd 6 Fe 13 Cu and Nd 6 Fe 13 Zn , which exhibit antiferromagnetic ordering in the Fe sublattice according to our calculations. We propose that the partial substitution of Nd atoms with Pr can gradually reduce the formation energy of these phases and maintain their original antiferromagnetic states.

Abstract:The magnetic properties and crystallization of amorphous Nd2(Fe1−xCox)ox)23B3 alloys were studied. The Curie temperature Tc is found to increase monotonously with increasing Co concentration x, while the saturation magnetic moment μs shows a monotonous decrease. The crystalline samples were identified by X-ray diffraction. When the amorphous alloys were annealed at about 900 K, the crystallize to the metastate single-phase compounds of Nd2(Fe, Co)23B3.

Abstract:Nd2(Fe1-xMnx)14B crystallize in the tetragonal structure, space group P42/mnm, when xiHc shows a composition dependence. The magnetization and demagnetization behaviors in Nd2(Fe1-xMnx)14B can be understood in terms of narrow domain walls.

Abstract:In this study alloys with stoichiometry of R2Fe17 and R10Fe90-xSix (x = 0, 10, 15, 20) (R = Y, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er) have been prepared. Structural transition from the ordered rhombohedral (OR) Th2Zn17-type structure and the ordered hexagonal (OH) Th2Ni17-type structure to their disordered structures (DR and DH) has been observed according to the XRD patterns. The lattice parameters were obtained by Rietveld analysis and based on the changing characteristic of the parameters, these samples are divided into two categories: alloys with R = Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm and alloys with R = Y, Gd, Td, Dy, Ho, Er. The lattice parameters of the two categories show different changing behavior. For example, from R2Fe17 to R10Fe90, the lattice parameters a decrease and c increase for the latter category, whereas for the former the lattice parameters a and c nearly have no change. In addition, increase of the ratio c/a has been found with increasing Fe or Si content, indicating the introduction of extra Fe dumbbells into the crystal cells, forming the DR or DH intermetallic compounds of R2-y(Fe,Si)(17+2y). The obtained samples with disordered structure have shown better stability than the TbCu7-type metastable materials and the higher Fe concentration gives promise of higher magnetization. The mixed-rare-earth effect has also been studied in the (Ce,R)(10)Fe75Si15 alloys and transition between the DR and DH structures has been realized by changing the mixed R-type or adjusting the Ce/R ratio. As for the magnetic properties, the Curie temperatures are increased remarkably by the introduction of Si and the saturation magnetizations of R10Fe90-xSix are often higher than that of the R2Fe17 alloys.

Abstract:Permanent magnetic alloys of nanocomposite Nd_(4.5-x)Tb_xFe_(75.5)B_(20)(x=0;1) were prepared by rapid quenching and annealing treatment.The microstructures and magnetic properties of the samples were investigated by X-ray diffraction(XRD) and vibrating sample magnetometer(VSM).The results show that the annealing process affects obviously the magnetic properties of two kind of samples,and adding 1at% Tb element improves notably magnetic properties.

Abstract:The iron rich intermetallic compound YxDy1-xFe11.35Nb0.65 (x=0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0) and their carbides YxDy1-xFe11.35Nb0.65C have been investigated. By the substitution of Y for Dy, for the alloys, the spin reorientation transition temperature (T-sr1) decreases, and the saturation magnetization M(s) and the anisotropy field B-a increase. The carbide YxDy1-xFe11.35Nb0.65C has a T-c around 710 K, M(s) in the range 90 similar to 140 JT(-1)kg(-1) and mu(0)H(a) changing rapidly with Y content at room temperature.

Abstract:A series of NdDyFe/sub 17-x-y/Co/sub x/Si/sub y/ solid solutions with x = 2 and 3 and y=0.5,1.0,and 1.5 were prepared by induction melting stoichiometric amounts of high-purity elements. The postannealed samples consist of two phases belonging to the space groups R3 m and P6/sub 3//mmc. The lattice parameters and the unit cell volumes were calculated from the refinements of the magnetic and structural unit cells using the FULLPROF version of the Rietveld program. For a fixed content of Co, the maximum Curie temperatures (305/spl deg/C to 405/spl deg/C) were observed in samples with y=1 and having two phases, a disordered rhombohedral (DR) structure and a disordered hexagonal (DH) structure. An increase in the Curie temperature of 70/spl deg/C per atom of cobalt is observed in NdDyFe/sub 17-x-y/Co/sub x/Si/sub y/ with y=1 and x /spl les/ 3, suggesting that with a suitable choice of rare earths this DR phase may be a promising candidate for high-energy product permanent magnets. The magnetization versus temperature (M versus T) plots of the solid solutions, which consist of two phases, exhibit only a single magnetic ordering transition temperature.

Abstract:The effects of Nb addition on the crystallization behavior, microstructure, and magnetic properties of melt-spun Nd2Fe14B/α-Fe nanocomposite magnets have been studied. The addition of Nb can significantly improve the thermal stability of amorphous phase in as-spun alloys, narrow the range between the onset crystallization temperature and the optimal annealing temperature, restrain the initial formation and growth of α-Fe and Nd2Fe14B. A finer and more homogeneous microstructure can be obtained in the Nb-doped alloy than in the Nb-free alloy. And the Nb addition makes the grains more equiaxed shape. The Nd10Fe83Nb1B6 alloy annealed at 715 °C for 10 min exhibits the improved magnetic properties, B r = 0.90 T, i H c = 750 kA/m, (BH)max = 120 kJ/m3, the intrinsic coercivity and the maximum energy product increase by 25% and 14%, compared with the Nd10Fe84B6 alloy.
