Abstract:Mono-pile foundations have been widely used for offshore wind turbines principally due to their convenient construction and cost-effective nature. So far, little attention has been paid to large diameter "semi-rigid" piles that have distinct behaviours from flexible or ideally rigid piles. This paper presents a series of centrifuge model tests to study the deforming and bearing characteristics of a 5.9 dia. semi-rigid pile under lateral loadings in kaolin clay. For monotonic loading, a modified p-y curve analysis model considering rotational soil flow near the rotation centre of pile was proposed, highlighting the limitation of classic plane-strain based plasticity models to evaluate the ultimate lateral pile-soil resistance. For cyclic loading, a strong correlation between the degree of soil degradation and cyclic load amplitude was identified. Besides, a degradation factor model, accounting for various cyclic stress levels and soil depths, was proposed, which can be used to assess the accumulative displacement of semi-rigid piles under cyclic loadings in soft clay.
Analysis on Ultimate Bearing Capacity of Deepwater Submarine Pipe

Abstract:The submarine pipelines in deepwater sea area are subjected to more severe environmental loads than those in shallow water during the installation process,therefore the load combination could become critical and the local buckling may occur in the sagbend segment of pipelines.For ensuring pipeline safety,theoretical analysis for mechanical characteristics of deepwater submarine pipes was carried out with the assumption that the stress versus strain curve of the pipe material is elastic-perfectly plastic.The ultimate bearing capacity of pipes under the combined bending,longitudinal tension force and external hydro-static pressure was derived according to the maximum deformation energy density yield criterion.Then the formula of ultimate bearing capacity was applied to S-Lay technique to evaluate the safety of pipes.The results show that the load combination acting on the pipes increases as the water depth increases,and the ultimate bearing capacity of pipes decreases as the ratio of diameter to thickness increases.It is very convenient and effective to evaluate the safety of pipes with the derived equation.When the pipe-laying depth is larger than 3 500 m,the pipe with the ratio of diameter to thickness of 20 in the example may occur buckling failure,and the pipeline will be failure with the ratio of diameter to thickness greater than 30 for 2 000 m water depth.

Configuration of Submarine Pipeline for Deepwater S-lay Technique

Abstract:The safety of submarine pipeline has become an important problem during installation in deep water due to the combined action of high external water pressure, axial tension and bending moment. The special studies are focused on the deepwater S-lay technique in the present paper. The stiffened catenary theory is applied to establish the static equilibrium governing differential equation of a pipe element, and the solution equations of total configuration of the pipeline from a laybarge over a stinger to the seabed are completely derived. The numerical iteration method for solving pipeline configuration is presented in detail, and the corresponding program is developed by authors to carry out the analysis of effects of various parameters such as water depth, pipe diameter, thickness of concrete weighted coating layer, stinger length and control strain on pipe-laying configuration. The results show that as the inclination angle at the lower end of stinger is larger or smaller, the effects of these parameters on the configuration of pipeline are different; however, the thickness of concrete weighted coating layer has little effect on the configuration.
Semi-analytical solutions for single piles subjected to combined vertical and lateral loads by subgrade reaction method

Abstract:To intensively study the responses of single piles under combined vertical and lateral loads,the common form of the coefficient of subgrade reaction was introduced.The semi-analytical solutions were obtained by dividing the pile shaft under ground into many small segments and supposing the axial force of the pile and the coefficient of subgrade reaction corresponding to each segment to be constants.Together with the pre-existing power series solutions for the pile shaft above ground,the relevant computer program was developed by Fortran programming.The calculation results indicate that the maximum lateral displacement and bending moment increase significantly with the increase of lateral loads.The vertical load can cause the instability of the pile.The soil resistance at the ground surface and the distribution of the coefficient of subgrade reaction along depth play important roles in pile responses.The computed results obtained using solutions corresponding to a special case agree well with those obtained using pre-existing solutions,meaning that the presented solutions are dependable.

Abstract:The stability analysis methods for composite foundation improved by rigid piles under embankment are imperfect at present. The finite element method is used to analyze the damage process and failure mode of the piles under embankment. Due to the position of piles, there are significant differences between rigid piles to the contribution of embankment stability. The failure modes of piles can be divided into three categories: compression failure, bending failure and tensile failure, and the piles can be classified and partitioned according to their failure modes. Based on the principle of the limit equilibrium methods, the stability analysis method for rigid pile composite foundation under embankment considering the difference of failure modes is put forward and compared with other four kinds of stable analysis methods. It is shown that the results of this method are the closest to those of numerical analysis method, and this method is reasonable and feasible.

Abstract:Deepwater tumbler platform (DTP) is a novel semisubmersible concept in offshore industry, which utilizes double tier pontoons to improve heave performance so as to support dry tree systems, and to enable the platform stable unconditionally by installing ballast in lower tier pontoons (LTPs). However, the effectiveness of double tier pontoons on reducing heave motions has not been extensively studied, and additionally, the weight of LTPs brings in extra structural loads on the connections between the upper tier pontoons and LTPs, which make this connection the most critical one in the design of DTP. Therefore, the heave performance and the loads of the connections are the two main concerns in developing the DTP concept. In this paper, the hydrodynamic behavior of DTP and the loads of the connections are analyzed by numerical simulations as well as model tests. Good agreement of the numerical results with the experimental measurements was found and the results of both prove that the design of double tier pontoons greatly improves the heave performance. Besides, considerable amount of forces and bending moments by the motions of LTP were exerted on the connections. Finally, through a sensitivity study on the LTP depth, the relationship among LTP depth, heave performance and connection loads were discovered. This study illustrates the use of double tier pontoons in improving heave performance and provides important design guidance on the DTP design.
Investigation on mooring system design and optimization of a semi￣submersible crane vessel

Abstract:In recent years, China has witnessed a rising trend triggered by the development of semi￣submersible crane vessels, and mooring system design and optimization are one of the key issues in the design of the semi￣submersible crane vessel. In this study,coupled￣dynamic analysis of a semi￣submersible crane vessel with mooring cables was performed in the time domain to design and optimize the mooring system, in which the effects of basic parameters of the mooring system on its dynamic characteristics were evaluated. Design and optimization procedure that involves basic parameters of mooring system is presented. Particular attention was paid to the reliability of the mooring system designed in both intact and damaged conditions respectively, the characteristics of mooring system were investigated when the single cable was damaged as well. It is seen that the safety margin of the mooring system designed is well￣controlled, which can provide not only a guarantee for the survival ability of this semi￣submersible crane vessel in an extreme environmental condition but also a good concern for economy.

Abstract:In this paper, a semi-analytical method for the analysis of pile-supported embankments is proposed. The mathematic model describes the cooperative behavior of pile, pile cap, foundation soil, and embankment fills. Based on Terzaghi’s 1D consolidation theory of saturated soil, the consolidation of foundation soil is calculated. The embankments with two different types of piles: floating piles and end-bearing piles are investigated and discussed. The results of axial force and skin friction distributions along the pile and the settlements of pile-supported embankments are presented. It is found that it takes a longer time for soil consolidation in the embankment with floating piles, compared with the case using end-bearing piles. The differential settlement between the pile and surrounding soil at the pile top is larger for the embankment with end-bearing piles, compared with the case of floating piles.

Abstract:Column stabilized semisubmersible is one of the most commonly used hull systems for the design and development of drilling and production platforms used for offshore deep water operations. Recent reconfiguration and design alterations have improved its hydrodynamic behaviour in rough weather conditions and, thus, its application and functionality in ocean engineering. Semisubmersible dry-trees applications and large wind turbine foundation systems in ultra-deep waters require high payload integration for reduced motion responses in all degrees of freedom. This paper presents a review of recent industrial and academic contributions to the development of column stabilized semisubmersible hulls used for deep water operations. It also provides an overview of the motion and structural attachments of semisubmersibles. The type and formation of dry-trees semisubmersibles are discussed. The dynamic behaviour and comparative advantages of them are also explained.
Analysis of Floating Platform-Mooring System-Pile-soil Interactions under Wave Loadings: A Case Study of the Triangle-Shaped Semi-Submersible Platform

Abstract:The floating platform-mooring system-pile-soil interactions under wave loadings represent a complex yet understudied aspect of floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs). This paper presents the development and application of an Incompressible Material Point Method-Finite Element Method-Material Point Method (IMPMFEM-MPM) model to simulate these interactions for a triangle-shaped semi-submersible platform (Tri-SSP), which serves as the foundation of China's first deep-sea FOWT, named 'Fuyao.' The proposed model is validated by studying the hydrodynamic responses of the OC4-DeepCwind platform. Under regular waves, increasing wave heights lead to heightened motion amplitudes, with the Tri-SSP exhibiting distinct phase differences between surge, pitch, and heave motions. Anchor Group 1 experiences significant peak tensions, ranging from 2.26 MN to 4.47 MN, which influence soil displacement, shear forces and bending moments along the pile shaft, emphasizing the impact of wave loading on pile-soil interactions. Under 1-h irregular waves, tension in Anchor Group 1 reaches extreme levels, with tensions up to 8 MN observed, underscoring the critical role of mooring systems in mitigating wave-induced forces. The calculated maximum stress within the pile indicates the structural integrity of the DH36 steel pile under these conditions. Comparisons of hydrodynamic responses, both with and without pile-soil interactions, show minimal discrepancies in motion amplitudes, indicating a minor influence on the dynamics of the platform and mooring system. These findings contribute to the understanding of complex interactions in deep-sea FOWTs, informing design and operational strategies for enhanced stability and performance.

It also discusses the initial stability of unit with pontoon's compartment damage, finding that the damage of forward or after compartment has a great effect on initial longitudinal stability of unit in transit condition.

Abstract:The seakeeping performance of a certain ship equipped with semi-submerged bow (SSB) and bow-fins is discussed. The numerical calculations are carried out on a 600t deep-V compound archetypal ship. The results show that the compounded ship form has excellent seakeeping performance and thus it establishes the theoretical foundations for the development of monohull compounded ship form with high seakeeping performance.

Abstract:This paper introduces the study in both numerical calculation and model test of a Semi-submersible drilling platform moored along the quayside of Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. (SWS). To obtain reliable quay mooring system for a SEMI in the out-fitting condition, complicated factors, such as a barge is applied between the SEMI and the quayside, quayside has practical limited conditions, nonlinear characteristics of mooring lines and fenders, etc., are firstly discussed. Then based on several simplifications, static analysis about different environmental conditions, normal and typhoon, are carried out, in order to design the preliminary layouts. Later on, model test with the scale of 1:50 is conducted in the basin of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). Results between numerical simulation and model test are compared and the dynamic effect created by wave is investigated. Several principles for quay mooring layout of semi-submersible drilling platform have been concluded.

Abstract:Semisubmersible will work well when oil exploitation goes to ultra-deep water because of its variable load capacities, and good motion performance in extreme waves. It is considered to be a main type of platform while the water depth is more than 3000 meters. This paper establishes a multi-objective optimization model of semisubmersible for ultra-deep water, and it is solved by a multi-objective genetic algorithm-NSGA-II. The model is applied to a practical design, and Pareto results are obtained. The effectiveness of the method is verified by hydrodynamic analysis.

Abstract:In this paper, the multi-body coupled dynamic characteristics of a semisubmersible platform and an HYSY 229 barge were investigated. First, coupled hydrodynamic analysis of the HYSY 229 barge and the semisubmersible platform was performed. Relevant hydrodynamic parameters were obtained using the retardation function method of three-dimensional frequency-domain potential flow theory. The results of the hydrodynamic analysis were highly consistent with the test findings, verifying the accuracy of the multifloating hydrodynamic coupling analysis, and key hydrodynamic parameters were solved for different water depths and the coupling effect. According to the obtained results, the hydrodynamic influence was the largest in shallow waters when the coupling effect was considered. Furthermore, the coupled motion equation combined with viscous damping, fender system, and mooring system was established, and the hydrodynamics, floating body motion, and dynamic response of the fender system were analyzed. Motion analysis revealed good agreement among the surge, sway, and yaw motions of the two floating bodies. However, when the wave period reached 10 s, the motion of the two floating bodies showed severe shock, and a relative motion was also observed. Therefore, excessive constraints should be added between the two floating bodies during construction to ensure construction safety. The numerical analysis and model test results of the semisubmersible platform and HYSY 229 barge at a water depth of 42 m and sea conditions of 0°, 45°, and 90° were in good agreement, and the error was less than 5%. The maximum movement of the HYSY 229 barge reached 2.61 m in the sway direction, whereas that of the semisubmersible platform was 2.11 m. During construction, excessive constraints should be added between the two floating bodies to limit their relative movement and ensure construction safety.

Abstract:In the course of design and analysis of deepwater platform,it is restricted by other functions or capabilities when one parameter is adjusted to improve one performance.As a result,some competitions are induced between the functions and capabilities of the platform.Based on an innovative Deep Draft Multi-spar,the relationships of the platform′s structural characteristic parameters and stability performance,structural requirement,functional requirement,hydrodynamic and motion performance are discussed.The objective structural parameters involve column diameter,column height,distance of columns and location of ballast tank,etc.The results of hydrodynamic analysis and motion calculation indicate that the heave,pitch and surge RAOs of DDMS platform increase with the decrease of the draft height.In addition,the RAOs of DDMS platform are compared with those of the typical Spar and Semi platform′s RAOs.
Conceptual Design of A Deep Draft Semi-Submersible Platform with A Moveable Heave-Plate

Abstract:Based on the principle of turned mass damper (TMD) systems, the conceptual design of semi-submersible platform with a moveable heave-plate (MHS) has been put forward. The heave motion response amplitude operator (RAO) and viscous damping of the MHS platform are calculated by iteration, and the coupling stiffness between the MHS hull and the heave-plate is optimized to decrease the maximum heave motion response of the MHS hull under 10-year survival conditions in the South China Sea. The numerical results indicate that the heave motion RAO of the MHS hull can be decreased in the range of predominant wave frequencies, which may provide some reference to the heave motion control of offshore platforms.
Analysis of the hull form and sailing characters in calm water of a semi-planing wave-piercing boat

Abstract:In this paper, a semi-planing wave-piercing boat combining a hybrid tumblehome bow and a semi-planing hull, which has the features of both a wave-piercing boat and a semi-planing boat, is pro-posed to achieve the abilities of cutting through waves and decent speed. The semi-planing wave-piercing boat's freeboard has knuckles and is designed as anti-submergence. The freeboard could control submer-gence faced by a tumblehome bow, producing positive lift and extra reserve buoyancy, and improves the roll. The longitudinal angle of the anti-submergence freeboard is analyzed, and the boat's sailing characters in calm water with a chosen angle are calculated in a numerical way with dynamic mesh. The results show that anti-submergence freeboard works better with small longitudinal angles, and the boat has smaller drag and better hull gesture at high speed compared to a high-speed displacement wave-piercing boat.
