Abstract:Semisubmersible will work well when oil exploitation goes to ultra-deep water because of its variable load capacities, and good motion performance in extreme waves. It is considered to be a main type of platform while the water depth is more than 3000 meters. This paper establishes a multi-objective optimization model of semisubmersible for ultra-deep water, and it is solved by a multi-objective genetic algorithm-NSGA-II. The model is applied to a practical design, and Pareto results are obtained. The effectiveness of the method is verified by hydrodynamic analysis.
Research on Motion and Hydrodynamic Characteristics of a Deepwater Semi-Submersible by Numerical Simulation and Model Test

Abstract:In recent years,research on deepwaterr semi-submersibles has been a hotspot in the field of ocean engineering.In this paper,model test and numerical simulation are respectively carried out to analyse the motions of platform and tensions of mooring system comprehensively in different water depths,environmental conditions and wave angles.Compared with each other,results of these two methods are found very similar and can meet the corresponding needs of safety to ensure the reliability when the platform works at sea.On this basis,further researches are made on the motion and hydrodynamic characteristics of the platform in deep water,and on how the changes of water depth and environmental conditions affect the motions of platform and tensions of mooring system.Besides,the characteristics of the platform in the extreme condition are explored when one mooring line is broken,compared with the case of intact mooring system.Conclusive results of motion and tension obtained from this comparison will provide some safety reference criterions for the design of deepwater semi-submersibles in extreme cases.

Abstract:Column stabilized semisubmersible is one of the most commonly used hull systems for the design and development of drilling and production platforms used for offshore deep water operations. Recent reconfiguration and design alterations have improved its hydrodynamic behaviour in rough weather conditions and, thus, its application and functionality in ocean engineering. Semisubmersible dry-trees applications and large wind turbine foundation systems in ultra-deep waters require high payload integration for reduced motion responses in all degrees of freedom. This paper presents a review of recent industrial and academic contributions to the development of column stabilized semisubmersible hulls used for deep water operations. It also provides an overview of the motion and structural attachments of semisubmersibles. The type and formation of dry-trees semisubmersibles are discussed. The dynamic behaviour and comparative advantages of them are also explained.

Abstract:Constrain conditions of variables were defined according to the attainable information of semisubmersibles and design criterion, and a mathematic model of semisubmersible for ultra-deepwater was proposed and optimized by minimizing its heave response in head sea condition on the basis of combinatorial optimization. The result shows that the model and algorithm are reliable for optimization of semisubmersible during design.

Abstract:The seakeeping performance of a certain ship equipped with semi-submerged bow (SSB) and bow-fins is discussed. The numerical calculations are carried out on a 600t deep-V compound archetypal ship. The results show that the compounded ship form has excellent seakeeping performance and thus it establishes the theoretical foundations for the development of monohull compounded ship form with high seakeeping performance.

Abstract:Multiple Column Platform (MCP) semi-submersible is a newly proposed concept, which differs from the conventional semi-submersibles, featuring centre column and middle pontoon. It is paramount to ensure its structural reliability and safe operation at sea, and a rigorous investigation is conducted to examine the hydrodynamic and structural performance for the novel structure concept. In this paper, the numerical and experimental studies on the hydrodynamic performance of MCP are performed. Numerical simulations are conducted in both the frequency and time domains based on 3D potential theory. The numerical models are validated by experimental measurements obtained from extensive sets of model tests under both regular wave and irregular wave conditions. Moreover, a comparative study on MCP and two conventional semi-submersibles are carried out using numerical simulation. Specifically, the hydrodynamic characteristics, including hydrodynamic coefficients, natural periods and motion response amplitude operators (RAOs), mooring line tension are fully examined. The present study proves the feasibility of the novel MCP and demonstrates the potential possibility of optimization in the future study.
Hydrodynamics of Semi-Submersible Vehicle Hulls with Variable Height-Width Ratio in Deep and Shallow Water

Abstract:Semi-submersible vehicles keep most of their hulls underwater while maintaining a small platform above the water surface. These craft can find use for both naval operations and civil transportation due to special properties, including the low above-water hull profile, reduced wave drag in some speed regimes, and potentially better seaworthiness. However, hydrodynamics of these marine craft is not well studied. In this work, computational modeling is undertaken to explore steady hydrodynamic characteristics of several semi-submersible hull variations in a range of speeds in deep-water and finite-depth conditions. The validation and verification study is conducted using experimental data obtained with a Suboff model in a near-surface regime. Parametric simulations are performed for this hull and two others generated by modifying the original Suboff geometry to produce narrow and wide hull shapes with similar volumes. The computational results indicate that the narrow hull excels in deep water, having lower drag and experiencing lower downward suction force and smaller longitudinal moment. However, in shallow-water operations, the narrow hull exhibits noticeably larger resistance than other hulls with the same displacement due to smaller gap between the hull and sea floor. Main hydrodynamic characteristics of the studied hulls and illustrations of wave patterns are presented in the paper. These findings can be useful for designers of semi-submersible vehicles.

The Experimental and Numerical Analysis for a Deep-water Semi-submersible Platform

Abstract:This paper researched a truncated mooring system designed by the static-simulating principle.Taking a semi-submersible drilling platform moored in(1.5) km water depth as an example,a passive truncated model test with a truncated mooring system in 280 m water depth is run,with the model scale 1∶70,6 freedom motions and the mooring line tensions in the sea conditions are recorded.The full-depth model is studied through nonlinear time-domain coupling numerical method.Compared to the full-depth numerical results,it is concluded that static characteristics can be modeled quite well.Max values of the mooring line tensions do not quite match the full-depth's results,because of the disadvantage of dynamic simulation.As to the motion responses,the results of the truncated model test can be regarded as the forecast to the semi-submersible platform moored by the full-depth system,however,the mooring line tensions of the full-depth system should be studied with other methods(numerical analysis) together.

Abstract:For a new concept semi-submersible platform with four oblique columns above the water surface,both the model test in the deepwater offshore basin and numerical analyses were carried out to study the hydrodynamic performance.The water depth is 1.5 km and the spread mooring system has to be truncated equivalently for the model test.The hydrodynamic performance in both operational and survival conditions was investigated by analyzing the 6 DOF motions and the mooring line tensions based on the experimental and numerical results.The agreement is generally well and the good hydrodynamic performance of the new concept semi-submersible platform satisfies the design requirements.

Abstract:This paper introduces the study in both numerical calculation and model test of a Semi-submersible drilling platform moored along the quayside of Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. (SWS). To obtain reliable quay mooring system for a SEMI in the out-fitting condition, complicated factors, such as a barge is applied between the SEMI and the quayside, quayside has practical limited conditions, nonlinear characteristics of mooring lines and fenders, etc., are firstly discussed. Then based on several simplifications, static analysis about different environmental conditions, normal and typhoon, are carried out, in order to design the preliminary layouts. Later on, model test with the scale of 1:50 is conducted in the basin of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). Results between numerical simulation and model test are compared and the dynamic effect created by wave is investigated. Several principles for quay mooring layout of semi-submersible drilling platform have been concluded.

Abstract:Physical model experiments of floating facilities in deep and ultra-deepwater with full-depth mooring system present obstacles because no wave basin is sufficiently large to perform model testing in reasonable scale. Truncation of full-depth mooring system is required for model test. Based on both statics and mooring-induced damping equivalence, truncated mooring lines are designed. A model test of a semi-submersible platform with full-depth and truncated mooring system is presented in this paper. In general, good agreements between the motion responses of semi-submersible platform with full-depth and truncated mooring system are found based on the model test results.

Experimental Investigation on Motion Responses and Sectional Wave Loads of a Moored Semi-submersible in Deepwater

Abstract:The semi-submersibles are extensively employed in the offshore production but often suf-fer from extreme motion responses, internal sectional loads and mooring line tensions in harsh envi-ronments. A comprehensive experimental study was carried out to investigate the performance of a typical semi-submersible moored in South China Sea. In order to measure the wave loads in the lon-gitudinal mid-section, the semi model was divided into two parts. Three six-component force sen-sors were assembled to connect the two parts. It is revealed that the wave load transfer functions in the longitudinal mid-section reach to their peaks at the wave period of 10 s and the low-frequency long waves and the difference frequency waves seem to have little influence on the sectional loads. The influence of the wave and the combination of wave, wind and current was figured out by a com-parative study. It is noted that the wind and current have little influence on the wave-frequency mo-tions. But for the low-frequency motions, the contribution of the wind and current outweighs that of the wave. With the appearance of the wind and current, the maximum shear force, the separation force and the vertical bending moment in the longitudinal mid-section increase 127.07%, 51.87% and 45.77%, respectively. Meanwhile, the ratio (maximum mooring line tension/broken strength) reaches up to 62.3% in the most loaded line, which almost exceeds the limitation of 66.6%.

Abstract:Global strength analysis of a sixth generation deep-water semi-submersible platform is demonstrated in this paper.Wave induced loads and platform motion are calculated by means of three-dimensional diffraction method.The parameters of design wave are obtained by spectrum analysis method.Wave load prediction of 21 wave load conditions in three different situations is described.At the same time,three-dimensional FEM model is established to analyze structure general strength of the platform.Combining with wave load prediction and structure analytic results,principles of condition selection and key factors which control general strength are put forward.Such conclusions will be as some references to design,structural strength analysis,selection of typical nodes for fatigue assessment and structure optimization in the future.

Abstract:The semisubmersible platform is one of the most important equipment for the exploitation of deep-sea oil and gas. And its survival and operational capacities depend on the towing and motion performances. The present work investigates the properties of different platform component designs based on their towing and motion performances under wind and waves by using an integrated computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. The joint application of RANS and a VOF/6-DOF solver compiled in a new Fluent UDF Library is adopted for the main calculation. Numerical simulations and results demonstrate that the VOF/6-DOF solver is accurate and stable, which could achieve the same functions as the previous OpenFOAM scheme. In order to acquire a better towing performance, different shapes are suggested for the pontoon end shape, the column cross section, and the brace longitudinal section, respectively. As to the motion response, among all the three design selections, the column cross section has the greatest influence on the whole platform. The simulation results reveal that circle section increases the roll and pitch response and reduces the heave response, to which the square section is adverse.
Research on anti-collision capability for double-hull design for the column of semi-submersible by numerical simulation

Abstract:Most of the present semi-submersibles adopt single hull design for their columns. The anti-collision capability of the single hull column could fail to prevent the water pouring into the column in case of the collision accident. A double-hull design concept is proposed in the paper. The ring frame, the inner shell and the outer shell create an integrated system to undertake the collision. Three sets of finite element models are built. The nonlinear numerical simulation code, MSC. Dytran, is employed to do the simulation. Three collision scenarios are defined. The structural damages, the curves of relationship between collision force vs. penetration, and the curves of energy dissipation are obtained, to evaluate the anti-collision characteristics for the different column design and different collision scenarios. Consequently, comparisons are made, to evaluate the improvement of the anti-collision characteristic for the double-hull design, and some suggestions are also provided.

Abstract:The floating platform consisting of three interconnected semi-submersible modules deployed in shallow water with severe environmental conditions will be subject to very high environmental loads during storms and its position keeping will become a huge challenge. Therefore, it is important to investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics of the platform and design a robust mooring system to meet different demands during the service period of the platform. In this study, the hydrodynamic and motion analyses of the three-module semi-submersible platform were conducted by using both numerical simulation and experimental tests. In addition, a distinctive X-shaped mooring system was designed, which is characterized by relatively low stiffness in the direction of beam sea in which the environmental loads are the highest, and better load sharing among different mooring lines so that the extreme tension is curbed. Model tests were performed in a wave basin to acquire the platform motions and mooring tensions, and comparisons were made between the measurements and numerical predictions. The results of the study verify the feasibility of the three-module connected platform and its mooring system.
