Investigation of flowering date and fruit setting trait in different pear cultivars in Nanjing region

Abstract:【Objective】This study explored the flowering and fruit setting characteristics of different pearcultivars.【Methods】One hundred and forty –five pear cultivars in Nanjing were used to investigate theirbiological traits during the flowering and fruit setting period,such as bud germination date,floweringdate,flower number per inflorescence and fruit setting rate.【Results】The bud germination date of differ-ent varieties ranged from March 2nd to 19 th,mainly concentrating in March 5th to 8th. The first floweringdate ranged from March 16 th to 31 th. The full flowering date dispersed over March 18 th to April 1st. Thetime from first flowering to final flowering date lasted 7 to 17 days. The flower number per inflorescence ofdifferent cultivars varied from 3.67 to 9. The fruit setting rate of these cultivars differed greatly from eachother,the value ranging from 27.78 to 100% at 15 days after flowering. However,the fruit setting rate de-creased significantly at 30 days after flowering in some cultivars.【Conclusion】The bud germination dateof most cultivars mainly concentrated in the early and medium date,accounting for 72.79% of all testedcultivars. The flowering date of 145 cultivars mainly gathered in medium and late date,covering 29.08%of all the cultivars. The fruit setting rate was normally distributed,mostly concentrated in 30% to 70%.The flowering and fruiting characteristics of pear genotypes will provide the reliable basis for choosingsuitable varieties in Nanjing region and surrounding area,setting of pollinizer,cultivation management offlower and fruit,and even parental selection in breeding.
