Abstract:We report an interesting phenomenon when interacting uranyl peroxide nanoclusters U60 (Li48+mK12(OH)m[UO2(O2)(OH)]60 (H2O)n, m≈20 and n≈310) with a small amount of cationic surfactants - the cationic surfactants do not distribute evenly around the U60 clusters during the interaction as expected. Instead, a small fraction of U60 clusters attract almost all the surfactants, leading to the self-assembly into bilayer vesicular structures by using surfactant-U60 complexes as building locks, and later further aggregate and precipitate based on hydrophobic interaction; while the rest of the clusters remained unbounded soluble macroions in bulk solution. This phenomenon nicely demonstrates a unique feature of macroion solution. As Debye-Hückel approximation is no longer valid in such solutions, the competition between the local electrostatic interaction and hydrophobic interaction becomes important to regulate the solution behaviors of macroions.

Abstract:Mass Spectrometry has emerged as a valuable technique for investigating molecular cluster characteristics, including size distributions, compositions, stabilities and reactivity. In this study, we present a mass spectrometric analysis of cesium Cs mixed with sulfur hexafluoride SF6 clusters, denoted as [Cs]n[SF6]m+ , encapsulated within helium nanodroplets HNDs. Our analysis involved precise evaluation of mass spectra and calculating ion abundances taking into account the isotope patterns of ions. Additionally, we examined geometrical structures and stabilities of these molecules along with their corresponding highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy gaps. This finding sheds light on the fundamental properties and behaviour of mixed molecular clusters, offering insights into their potential applications and interactions.

Abstract:Supramolecular recognition of thymine (or its analogs) with various central cations can form magic number clusters. Dual nano-ESI via theta tip emitters was used to on-line synthesize clusters. Even thermodynamically unstable clusters can be detected by MS thanks to the very short life-time (similar to ms) of the generated microdroplets. By recording characteristic cluster distributions, isomers can be clearly differentiated in a novel "bottom-up" way. Theoretical calculations were performed to explain the MS results.
Uncovering the Pathway of Serine Octamer Magic Number Cluster Formation during Electrospray Ionization: Experiments and Simulations

Abstract:Electrospray ionization (ESI) of serine (Ser) solution generates Ser8H+ as an abundant magic number cluster. ESI clustering of most other solutes yields nonspecific stoichiometries. It is unclear why Ser8H+ dominates in the case of Ser, and how Ser8H+ forms during ESI. Even the location of Ser8H+ formation is contentious (in solution, in ESI droplets, or elsewhere). Here we unravel key aspects of the l-Ser8H+ formation pathway. Harsh ion sampling conditions promote the collision-induced dissociation (CID) of regular ESI analytes. Unexpectedly, Ser8H+ was seemingly resistant against CID during ion sampling, despite its extremely low tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) stability. This unusual behavior reveals that Ser8H+ forms during ion sampling. We propose the following pathway: (1) Nonspecific Ser clusters are released when ESI droplets evaporate to dryness. These initial clusters cover a wide size range, from a few Ser to hundreds or thousands of monomers. (2) The clusters undergo dissociation during ion sampling, mostly via successive loss of neutral monomers. For any source activation voltage, there is a subpopulation of clusters for which this CID cascade tends to terminate at the octamer level, culminating in Ser8H+-dominated product distributions. Mobile proton molecular dynamics simulations were used to model the entire pathway. Ser8H+ structures formed in these simulations were consistent with ion mobility experiments. The most compact structures resembled the model of [Scutelnic, V. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2018, 140, 7554-7560], with numerous intermolecular salt bridges and H-bonds. Our findings illustrate how the interplay of association and dissociation reactions across phase boundaries can culminate in magic number clusters.

Abstract:First direct experimental evidence for clathrate structures of (H2O)nH+ (n=20,21) is reported based on a technique allowing the number of nonhydrogen‐bonded surface hydrogens to be counted. Neutral clusters (H2O)n⋅((CH3)3N)m, prepared in a pulsed nozzle supersonic expansion, are ionized by multiphoton ionization and investigated with a reflectron time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry technique. The magic numbers (n,m) in the ion intensity distributions of (H2O)n⋅((CH3)3N)m⋅H+ studied under various experimental conditions are well correlated to the stable hydrogen‐bonding structures. For the mixed cluster ion (H2O)20⋅((CH3)3N)m⋅H+, the intensity distribution displays an abrupt intensity drop after the magic number at (20,11), while for (H2O)21⋅((CH3)3N)m⋅H+ the magic number appears at (21,10). Detection of the critical micelle concentration of cationic and anionic surfactants based on aggregation-induced emission property of hexaphenylsilole derivatives

Abstract:We report a fluorescence “turn-on” method to detect the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of surfactants. This method works well for both cationic and anionic surfactants. It employs an unprecedented mechanism (aggregation-induced emission, or AIE) to determine the CMC values, and the results are consistent with the data obtained by the classical techniques. In addition, this method renders the convenient detection of the CMC values. Any large and professional instruments are unnecessary, instead, a portable UV lamp and an ultrasonic generator are enough to carry out the detection in an ordinary laboratory. Considering that micelles are interesting entities and have found applications in many important fields such as emulsion polymerization, template of nanosized materials synthesis, controllable drug delivery and macromolecular self-assembling. Our experimental results may offer a facile, sensitive and promising method to detect the formation of micelles constructed by the new amphiphilic molecules and macromolecules.

Abstract:Establishing a general model of heterogeneous ice nucleation has long been challenging because of the surface water structures found on different substrates. Identifying common water clusters, regardless of the underlying substrate, is one of the key steps toward solving this problem. Here, we demonstrate the presence of a common water cluster found on both hydrophilic Pt(111) and hydrophobic Cu(111) surfaces using scanning tunneling microscopy and non-contact atomic force microscopy. Water molecules self-assemble into a structure with a central flat-lying hexagon and three fused pentagonal rings, forming a cluster consisting of 15 individual water molecules. This cluster serves as a critical nucleus during ice nucleation on both surfaces: ice growth beyond this cluster bifurcates to form two-dimensional (three-dimensional) layers on hydrophilic (hydrophobic) surfaces. Our results reveal the inherent similarity and distinction at the initial stage of ice growth on hydrophilic and hydrophobic close-packed metal surfaces; thus, these observations provide initial evidence toward a general model for water-substrate interaction.

Abstract:Events taking place during electrospray ionization (ESI) can trigger the self-assembly of various nanoclusters. These products are often dominated by magic number clusters (MNCs) that have highly symmetrical structures. The literature rationalizes the dominance of MNCs by noting their high stability. However, this argument is not necessarily adequate because thermodynamics cannot predict the outcome of kinetically controlled reactions. Thus, the mechanisms responsible for MNC dominance remain poorly understood. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations can provide atomistic insights into self-assembly reactions, but even this approach has thus far failed to provide pertinent answers. The current work overcomes this limitation. We focused on salt clusters formed from aqueous NaCl solutions during ESI. The corresponding mass spectra are dominated by the Na14Cl13+ MNC. Simulations of ESI droplets showed nonspecific association of Na+ and Cl-, culminating in gaseous clusters via solvent evaporation to dryness (charged residue mechanism). These nascent clusters did not show any preference for MNCs. In mass spectrometry experiments, analyte ions undergo in-source activation prior to detection. We emulated in-source activation by heating nascent clusters in our MD runs. Heating triggered structural fluctuations and dissociation events, generating MNC-dominated product distributions. Why are MNCs preferred after in-source activation? Thermally excited clusters frequently adopt structures consisting of a preformed MNC and a stringlike protrusion that contains the surplus ions. Facile separation of these protrusions releases the MNC (Clusterhot → MNC-protrusion → MNC + protrusion). This work marks the first time that MD simulations were able to capture cluster self-assembly with subsequent "molecular pruning", generating MNC-dominated product distributions that agree with experiments.

Abstract:The growth of cyclodextrin inclusion complexes (ICs) on oil/water interfaces represents a beautiful example of spontaneous pattern formation in nature. How the supramolecules evolve remains a challenge because surface confinement can frustrate microcrystal growth and give rise to unusual phase transitions. Here we investigate the self-assembly of ICs on droplet surfaces using microfluidics, which allows directly visualizing packing, wetting and ordering of the microcrystals anchored on the surface. The oil guests of distinct molecular structures can direct the assembly of the ICs and largely affect anchoring dynamics of the ICs microcrystals, leading to a range of behaviors including orientating, slipping, buckling, jamming, or merging. We discuss the behaviors observed in terms of the flexibility of the building blocks, which offers a new degree of freedom through which to tailor their properties and gives rise to a striking feature of anchoring patterns that have no counterpart in normal colloidal crystals.

Abstract:Abstract The formation and diffusion energies of atomic clusters on Mg surfaces determine the surface roughness and formation of faulted structure, which in turn affect the mechanical deformation of Mg. This paper reports first principles density function theory (DFT) based quantum mechanics calculation results of atomic clustering on the low energy surfaces {0001} and $$\{\bar{1}011\}$$ { 1 ¯ 011 } . In parallel, molecular statics calculations serve to test the validity of two interatomic potentials and to extend the scope of the DFT studies. On a {0001} surface, a compact cluster consisting of few than three atoms energetically prefers a face-centered-cubic stacking, to serve as a nucleus of stacking fault. On a $$\{\bar{1}011\}$$ { 1 ¯ 011 } , clusters of any size always prefer hexagonal-close-packed stacking. Adatom diffusion on surface $$\{\bar{1}011\}$$ { 1 ¯ 011 } is high anisotropic while isotropic on surface (0001). Three-dimensional Ehrlich–Schwoebel barriers converge as the step height is three atomic layers or thicker. Adatom diffusion along steps is via hopping mechanism, and that down steps is via exchange mechanism.

Abstract:Nanometer-scale clusters form from vapor-phase precursors and can subsequently grow into nanoparticles during atmospheric nucleation events. A particularly interesting set of clusters relevant to nucleation is hybrid iodine pentoxide-iodic acid clusters of the form (I2O5)(x)(HIO3)(y) as these clusters have been observed in coastal region nucleation events in anomalously high concentrations. To better understand their properties, we utilized ion mobility-mass spectrometry to probe the structures of cluster anions of the form (I2O5)(x)(HIO3)(y)(IO alpha)(-) (x = 0-7,y = 0-1, alpha = 1-3), similar to those observed in coastal nucleation events. We show that (I2O5)(x)(HIO3)(y)(IO alpha)(-) clusters are relatively stable against dissociation during mass spectrometric measurement, as compared to other clusters observed in nucleation events over continental sites, and that at atmospherically relevant relative humidity levels (65% and less) clusters can become sufficiently hydrated to facilitate complete conversion of iodine pentoxide to iodic acid but that water sorption beyond this level is limited, indicating that the clusters do not persist as nanometer-scale droplets in the ambient.
Heterogeneous Clusters of Phthalocyanine and Water Prepared and Probed in Superfluid Helium Nanodroplets

Abstract:Superfluid helium nanodroplets comprised of thousands to millions of helium atoms can serve as a reactor for the synthesis of heterogeneous molecular clusters at cryogenic conditions. The cluster synthesis occurs via consecutive pick-up of the cluster building blocks by the helium droplet and their subsequent coalescence within the droplet. The effective collision cross section of the building blocks is determined by the helium droplet size and thus exceeds by orders of magnitude that of a reactive collision in the gas phase. Moreover, the cryogenic helium environment (at 0.38 K) as a host promotes the formation of metastable cluster configurations. The question arises as to the extent of the actual involvement of the helium environment in the cluster formation. The present study deals with clusters of single phthalocyanine (Pc) molecules with single water molecules. A large fluorophore such as Pc offers several sites where the water molecule can attach. The resulting isomeric variants of the Pc-H2O complex can be selectively identified by electronic spectroscopy. We compare the experimental electronic spectra of the Pc-H2O complex generated in superfluid helium nanodroplets with the results of quantum-chemical calculations on the same cluster but under gas-phase conditions. The number of isomeric variants observed in the helium droplet experiment comes out the same as that obtained from our gas-phase calculations.
Laser-Induced Patterned Photonic Crystal Heterostructure for Multimetal Ion Recognition

Abstract:In this work, a new method of direct laser writing patterned photonic crystal heterostructure on a glass surface is proposed. A multi-heterostructure photonic crystal (MHPC) is predeposited on the glass surface and then the laser spot is focused on it and moves according to the set program, leading to the formation of patterned MHPC. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and finite element simulation show that the patterning is caused by the local thermal annealing of the polymer colloidal spheres through the thermal conduction effect of the substrate on the laser energy. The patterned area presents a function of the water confinement effect and can be used as a high-performance droplet analysis chip. By integrating the patterned MHPC array and seven fluorescent dyes, nine metal ions can be successfully recognized and discriminated. This approach is quite facile and fast for designing colloidal photonic crystals with controllable patterns. Formation of heterogeneous clusters in superfluid helium nanodroplets: phthalocyanine and water

Abstract:Clusters consisting of a single phthalocyanine molecule and a single water molecule are investigated by means of electronic spectroscopy in superfluid helium droplets. A recent spectroscopic study of those clusters [J. Fischer, F. Schlaghaufer, E.-M. Lottner, A. Slenczka, L. Christiansen, H. Stapelfeldt, M. Karra, B. Friedrich, T. Mullan, M. Schütz and D. Usvyat, J. Phys. Chem. A, 2019, 123, 10057-10064] which all exhibit a water induced electronic shift to the red is now complemented by the corresponding clusters exhibiting a water induced shift to the blue. These clusters will be analyzed by means of fluorescence excitation spectra, dispersed emission spectra, and additional experimental observations made feasible by helium droplets as cryogenic reactor. Together with the blue shifted clusters a total number of at least 6 isomeric variants could be identified in helium droplets. This contrasts to a number of only three isomeric variants obtained from quantum chemical calculations [J. Fischer, F. Schlaghaufer, E.-M. Lottner, A. Slenczka, L. Christiansen, H. Stapelfeldt, M. Karra, B. Friedrich, T. Mullan, M. Schütz and D. Usvyat, J. Phys. Chem. A, 2019, 123, 10057-10064] disregarding the helium environment and to a single isomer identified in a molecular beam experiment [J. Menapace and E. Bernstein, J. Chem. Phys., 1987, 87, 6877-6889]. The discrepancy in the number of isomers provides evidence of a profound involvement of helium in clustering. Moreover, the discrepancies between the gas phase experiment and quantum chemical calculations similarly reveal the influence of the dynamics of cluster formation on the population of global and local minima that are accessible as isomeric variants.

Abstract:Electron impact mass spectra have been recorded for helium nanodroplets containing water clusters. In addition to identification of both H+(H2O)n and (H2O)n+ ions in the gas phase, additional peaks are observed which are assigned to He(H2O)n+ clusters for up to n=27. No clusters are detected with more than one helium atom attached. The interpretation of these findings is that quenching of (H2O)n+ by the surrounding helium can cool the cluster to the point where not only is fragmentation to H+(H2O)m (where m⩽n−1) avoided, but also, in some cases, a helium atom can remain attached to the cluster ion as it escapes into the gas phase. Ab initio calculations suggest that the first step after ionization is the rapid formation of distinct H3O+ and OH units within the (H2O)n+ cluster. To explain the formation and survival of He(H2O)n+ clusters through to detection, the H3O+ is assumed to be located at the surface of the cluster with a dangling O–H bond to which a single helium atom can attach via a charge-induced dipole interaction. This study suggests that, like H+(H2O)n ions, the preferential location for the positive charge in large (H2O)n+ clusters is on the surface rather than as a solvated ion in the interior of the cluster.

Abstract:Halide ions have emerged as important surface active species that regulate the growth of nanomaterials and concomitant physicochemical properties. However, there are very few reports concerning anion exchange of halide ions for the growth and conversion of nanocrystals or nanoclusters. Herein, we present the transformations of silver(I) chalcogenide clusters induced by doping halide ions, which are particularly of interest because of individual pathways controlled by ion species and amounts. Based on the cluster transformation, we further developed a luminescent turn-on sensor with high selectivity, detecting Cl- and Br-. This work opens a new way of understanding the growth of clusters and developing their luminescent sensing applications.

Microsolvation of LiI and CsI in Water: Anion Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Ab Initio Calculations.

Abstract:In order to understand the microsolvation of LiI and CsI in water and provide information about the dependence of solvation processes on different ions, we investigated the LiI(H2O)n(-) and CsI(H2O)n(-) (n = 0-6) clusters using photoelectron spectroscopy. The structures of these clusters and their corresponding neutrals were investigated with ab initio calculations and confirmed by comparing with the photoelectron spectroscopy experiments. Our studies show that the structural evolutions of LiI(H2O)n and CsI(H2O)n clusters are very different. The Li-I distance in LiI(H2O)n(-) increases abruptly at n = 3, whereas the abrupt elongation of the Li-I distance in neutral LiI(H2O)n occurs at n = 5. In contrast to the LiI(H2O)n(-) clusters, the Cs-I distance in CsI(H2O)n(-) increases significantly at n = 3, reaches a maximum at n = 4, and decreases again as n increases further. There is no abrupt change of the Cs-I distance in neutral CsI(H2O)n as n increases from 0 to 6. Water molecules interact strongly with the Li ion; consequently, water molecule(s) can insert within the Li(+)-I(-) ion pair. In contrast, five or six water molecules are not enough to induce obvious separation of the Cs(+)-I(-) ion pair since the Cs-water interaction is relatively weak compared to the Li-water interaction. Our work has shown that the structural variation and microsolvation in MI(H2O)n clusters are determined by the delicate balance between ion-ion, ion-water, and water-water interactions, which may have significant implications for the general understanding of salt effects in water solution.

Abstract:Many sequences of [(SiO2)(n) X](-) clusters are found under XeCl excimer laser ablation of several condensed state SiO2-based materials in the negative channel of the time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The unique roles of the network structure and surface-active groups in laser energy absorptance, transfer and the cluster formation mechanism also have been discussed.
