Abstract:Salt cluster ions produced by electrospray ionization are used for mass calibration and fundamental investigations into cluster stability and charge separation processes. However, previous studies have been limited to relatively small clusters owing to the heterogeneity associated with large, multiply-charged clusters that leads to unresolved signals in conventional m/z spectra. Here, charge detection mass spectrometry is used to measure both the mass and charge distributions of positively charged clusters of KCl, CaCl 2 , and LaCl 3 with masses between ~1 and 10 MDa by dynamically measuring the energy per charge, m/z, charge, and mass of simultaneously trapped individual ions throughout a 1 s trapping time. The extent of remaining hydration on the clusters, determined from the change in the frequency of ion motion with time as a result of residual water loss, follows the order KCl < CaCl 2 < LaCl 3 , and is significantly lower than that of a pure water nanodrop, consistent with tighter water binding to the more highly charged cations in these clusters. The number of ion emission events from these clusters also follows this same trend, indicating that water at the cluster surface facilitates charge loss. A new frequency-based method to determine the magnitude of the charge loss resulting from individual ion emission events clearly resolves losses of +1 and +2 ions. Achieving this individual charge state resolution for ion emission events is an important advance in obtaining information about the late stages of bare gaseous ions formation. Future experiments on more hydrated clusters are expected to lead to a better understanding of ion formation in electrospray ionization.

Mesophase Formation Stabilizes High-Purity Magic-Sized Clusters

Abstract:Magic-sized clusters (MSCs) are renowned for their identical size and closed-shell stability that inhibit conventional nanoparticle (NP) growth processes. Though MSCs have been of increasing interest, understanding the reaction pathways toward their nucleation and stabilization is an outstanding issue. In this work, we demonstrate that high concentration synthesis (1000 mM) promotes a well-defined reaction pathway to form high-purity MSCs (greater than 99.9 percent). The MSCs are resistant to typical growth and dissolution processes. Based on insights from in-situ X-ray scattering analysis, we attribute this stability to the accompanying production of a large, hexagonal organic-inorganic mesophase (greater than 100 nm grain size) that arrests growth of the MSCs and prevents NP growth. At intermediate concentrations (500 mM), the MSC mesophase forms, but is unstable, resulting in NP growth at the expense of the assemblies. These results provide an alternate explanation for the high stability of MSCs. Whereas the conventional mantra has been that the stability of MSCs derives from the precise arrangement of the inorganic structures (i.e., closed-shell atomic packing), we demonstrate that anisotropic clusters can also be stabilized by self-forming fibrous mesophase assemblies. At lower concentration (less than 200 mM or greater than 16 acid-to-metal), MSCs are further destabilized and NPs formation dominates that of MSCs. Overall, the high concentration approach intensifies and showcases inherent concentration-dependent surfactant phase behavior that is not accessible in conventional (i.e., dilute) conditions. This work provides not only a robust method to synthesize, stabilize, and study identical MSC products, but also uncovers an underappreciated stabilizing interaction between surfactants and clusters.

The Reliability of Nipple Aspirate and Ductal Lavage in Women at Increased Risk for Breast Cancer—a Potential Tool for Breast Cancer Risk Assessment and Biomarker Evaluation

Abstract:Purpose: Ductal lavage, a technique used to sample epithelial cells from breast ducts, has potential use in risk assessment and biomarker evaluation among women at increased risk for breast cancer. However, little is known about the reliability of the procedure. Methods: We evaluated the reliability of nipple aspirate (NAF) and ductal lavage at two time points 6 months apart in women at increased risk for breast cancer. Eligible women had a 5-year Gail risk ≥1.66% or lifetime risk of >20%, and/or a family history or personal history of breast cancer. All ducts that produced NAF were cannulated. The κ statistic was used to evaluate reliability of NAF production, cellular yield, and cytologic diagnosis. Results: Sixty-nine women (mean age, 47 years) were enrolled over 35 months. Forty-seven returned for a second visit. At baseline, 65% of premenopausal and 41% of postmenopausal women produced NAF (P = 0.05), of which 72% underwent successful lavage of at least one duct. Samples of inadequate cellular material for diagnosis were significantly more likely in postmenopausal women than in premenopausal women (P = 0.04). Of the women who returned for a second visit, 18 of 24 who produced NAF had at least one duct successfully cannulated. Twenty-four ducts in 14 women were lavaged twice. Among these ducts, cellular yield for the two time points was inconsistent (κ = 0.33 ± 0.13), and only fair cytologic agreement was observed (κ = 0.32 ± 0.15). Ductal lavage was associated with moderate discomfort. Conclusion: Currently, the use of ductal lavage is limited by technical challenges in duct cannulation, inconsistent NAF production, a high rate of inadequate cellular material for diagnosis, fair cytologic reproducibility, and low participant return rates. Molecular Dynamics Studies Of The Kinetics Of Freezing Of (Nacl)(108) Clusters

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations adopting the Born-Mayer-Huggins potential function were performed on a series of (NaCl)(108) clusters to observe their properties during heating and cooling and to monitor their nucleation events during freezing. Melting was found to be considerably sharper than that of clusters of softer materials whose solid form, unlike that of salt, is well-wetted by the melt. The resulting liquid clusters were observed to be greatly distorted from a spherical shape by capillary waves. The freezing of highly supercooled liquid clusters was found to be in qualitative accord with the classical theory of homogeneous nucleation. Moreover, the interfacial free energy parameter sigma(sl) inferred via nucleation theory, namely, 117.7, 117.6, and 119.6 mJ/m(2) at 500, 525, and 550 K, respectively, was close to the value predicted by the empirical Turnbull relation and in crude agreement with an experimental value determined at a much lower degree of supercooling and derived on a very different basis. Nevertheless, the thickness of the interface between the liquid and solid implied by Granasy's diffuse interface theory and by density functional calculations was so large in comparison with the radius of the critical nucleus according to the classical theory as to cast considerable doubt about the quantitative applicability of that theory to the present clusters. On the other hand, the MD nucleation rates, taken together with the prior and somewhat speculative experimental result, indicate that the classical theory performs better than the diffuse interface theory. Calculations and possible experiments to clarify the situation are outlined.
Ionic Liquid Clusters Generated from Electrospray Thrusters: Cold Ion Spectroscopic Signatures of Size-Dependent Acid-Base Interactions

Abstract:We determine the intramolecular distortions at play in the 2-hydroxyethylhydrazinium nitrate (HEHN) ionic liquid (IL) propellant, which presents the interesting case that the HEH+ cation has multiple sites (i.e., hydroxy, primary amine, and secondary ammonium groups) available for H-bonding with the nitrate anion. These interactions are quantified by analyzing the vibrational band patterns displayed by cold cationic clusters, (HEH+)n(NO3-)n-1, n = 2-6, which are obtained using IR photodissociation of the cryogenically cooled, mass-selected ions. The strong interaction involving partial proton transfer of the acidic N-H proton in HEH+ cation to the nitrate anion is strongly enhanced in the ternary n = 2 cluster but is suppressed with increasing cluster size. The cluster spectra recover the bands displayed by the bulk liquid by n = 5, thus establishing the minimum domain required to capture this aspect of macroscopic behavior.
Cluster Formation induced by local dielectric saturation in Restricted Primitive Model Electrolytes

Abstract:Experiments using the Surface Force Apparatus (SFA) have found anomalously long ranged charge-charge underscreening in concentrated salt solutions. Meanwhile, theory and simulations have suggested ion clustering to be the possible origin of this behaviour. The popular Restricted Primitive Model of electrolyte solutions, in which the solvent is represented by a uniform relative dielectric constant, $\varepsilon_r$, is unable to resolve the anomalous underscreening seen in experiments. In this work, we modify the Restricted Primitive Model to account for local dielectric saturation within the ion hydration shell. The dielectric constant in our model locally decreases from the bulk value to a lower saturated value at the ionic surface. The parameters for the model are deduced so that typical salt solubilities are obtained. Our simulations for both bulk and slit geometries show that our model displays strong cluster formation and these give rise to long-ranged interactions between charged surfaces at distances similar to what has been observed in SFA measurements. An electrolyte model wherein the dielectric constant remains uniform does not display similar clusters, even with $\varepsilon_r$ equal to the saturated value at ion contact. Hence, the observed behaviours are not simply due to an enhanced Coulomb interaction.

Is the Local Ion Density Sufficient to Drive NaCl Nucleation from the Melt and Aqueous Solution?

Abstract:Even though nucleation is ubiquitous in different science and engineering problems, investigating nucleation is extremely difficult due to the complicated ranges of time and length scales involved. In this work, we simulate NaCl nucleation in both molten and aqueous environments using enhanced sampling all-atom molecular dynamics with deep learning-based estimation of reaction coordinates. By incorporating various structural order parameters and learning the reaction coordinate as a function thereof, we achieve significantly improved sampling relative to traditional ad hoc descriptions of what drives nucleation, particularly in the aqueous medium. Our results reveal a one-step nucleation mechanism in both environments, with reaction coordinate analysis highlighting the importance of local ion density in distinguishing solid and liquid states. However, while fluctuations in the local ion density are necessary to drive nucleation, they are not sufficient. Our analysis shows that near the transition states, descriptors such as enthalpy and local structure become crucial. Our protocol proposed here enables robust nucleation analysis and phase sampling, and could offer insights into nucleation mechanisms for generic small molecules in different environments.

Stability of Two-Dimensional Ionic Clusters at Solid–Liquid Interfaces

Abstract:The stability of two-dimensional clusters (2DCs) at the interface between ionic crystals and their solutions was investigated by molecular dynamics simulations. We found that 2DCs show a remarkable feature of odd–even alternation in stability. In NaCl and NaBr systems, the clusters containing an odd number of ions are more stable than those with an even number of ions, while in KCl systems, it is the other way round. Accordingly, the stability of water molecules in the first hydration shell of 2DCs also shows an odd–even alternation, which is consistent with the associated 2DCs. The odd–even alternation is discussed based on a competition mechanism between two factors: the Coulomb repulsion in charged 2DCs and the interaction between charges and water dipoles. Homogeneous nucleation mechanism of NaCl in aqueous solutions

Abstract:In this study, molecular dynamic simulations are employed to investigate the nucleation of NaCl crystal in solutions. According to the simulations, the dissolved behaviors of NaCl in water are dependent on ion concentrations. With increasing NaCl concentrations, the dissolved Na$^+$ and Cl$^-$ ions tend to be aggregated in solutions. In combination with our recent studies, the aggregate of dissolved solutes is mainly ascribed to the hydrophobic interactions. Thermodynamically, no barrier is needed to overcome in the formation of the solute aggregate. This is different from the two-step nucleation mechanism. In comparison with the classical nucleation theory (CNT), due to the aggregate of dissolved solutes, this lowers the barrier height of nucleation, and affects the nucleation mechanism of NaCl crystal in water.

Abstract:The magic number silica clusters [(SiO(2))(n)O(2)H(3)](-) with n = 4 and 8 have been observed in the XeCl excimer laser (308 nm) ablation of various porous siliceous materials. The structural origin of the magic number clusters has been studied by the density functional theoretical calculation at the B3LYP/6-31G** level, with a genetic algorithm as a supplementary tool for global structure searching. The DFT results of the first magic number cluster are parallel to the corresponding Hartree-Fock results previously reported with only small differences in the structural parameters. Theoretical calculation predicts that the first magic number cluster (SiO(2))(4)O(2)H(4) and its anion [(SiO(2))(4)O(2)H(3)](-) will most probably take pseudotetrahedral cage-like structures. To study the structural properties of the second magic number cluster, geometries of the bare cluster (SiO(2))(8), the neutral complex cluster (SiO(2))(8)O(2)H(4), and the anionic cluster [(SiO(2))(8)O(2)H(3)](-) are fully optimized at the B3LYP/6-31G** level, and the corresponding vibrational frequencies are calculated. The DFT calculations predict that the ground state of the bare silica octamer (SiO(2))(8) has a linear chain structure, whereas the second magic number complex cluster (SiO(2))(8)O(2)H(4) and its anion [(SiO(2))(8)O(2)H(3)](-) are most probably a mixture of cubic cage-like structural isomers with an O atom inside the cage and several quasi-bicage isomers with high intercage interactions. The stabilization of these structures can also be attributed to the active participation of the group of atoms 2O and 4H (3H for the anion) in chemical bonding during cluster formation. Our theoretical calculation gives preliminary structural interpretation of the presence of the first and second magic number clusters and the absence of higher magic numbers.
Spontaneous Formation of KCl Aggregates in Biomolecular Simulations: A Force Field Issue?

Abstract:Realistic all-atom simulation of biological systems requires accurate modeling of both the biomolecules and their ionic environment. Recently, ion nucleation phenomena leading to the rapid growth of KCl or NaCl clusters in the vicinity of biomolecular systems have been reported. To better understand this phenomenon, molecular dynamics simulations of KCl aqueous solutions at three (1.0, 0.25, and 0.10 M) concentrations were performed. Two popular water models (TIP3P and SPC/E) and two Lennard-Jones parameter sets (AMBER and Dang) were combined to produce a total of 80 ns of molecular dynamics trajectories. Results suggest that the use of the Dang cation Lennard-Jones parameters instead of those adopted by the AMBER force-field produces a more accurate description of the ionic solution. In the later case, formation of salt aggregates is probably indicative of an artifact resulting from misbalanced force-field parameters. Because similar results were obtained with two different water parameter sets, the simulations exclude a water model dependency in the formation of anomalous ionic clusters. Overall, the results strongly suggest that for accurate modeling of ions in biomolecular systems, great care should be taken in choosing balanced ionic parameters even when using the most popular force-fields. These results invite a reexamination of older data obtained using available force-fields and a thorough check of the quality of current parameters sets by performing simulations at finite (>0.25 M) instead of minimal salt conditions.

Abstract:In this work, we use large-scale molecular dynamics simulations coupled to free energy calculations to identify for the first time a limit of stability (spinodal) and a change in the nucleation mechanism in aqueous NaCl solutions. This is a system of considerable atmospheric, geological, and technical significance. We find that the supersaturated metastable NaCl solution reaches its limit of stability at sufficiently high salt concentrations, as indicated by the composition dependence of the salt chemical potential, indicating the transition to a phase separation by spinodal decomposition. However, the metastability limit of the NaCl solution does not correspond to spinodal decomposition with respect to crystallization. We find that beyond this spinodal, a liquid/amorphous separation occurs in the aqueous solution, whereby the ions first form disordered clusters. We term these clusters as "amorphous salt." We also identify a transition from one- to two-step crystallization mechanism driven by a spinodal. In particular, crystallization from aqueous NaCl solution beyond the spinodal is a two-step process, in which the ions first phase-separate into disordered amorphous salt clusters, followed by the crystallization of ions in the amorphous salt phase. By contrast, in the aqueous NaCl solution at concentrations lower than the spinodal, crystallization occurs via a one-step process as the ions aggregate directly into crystalline nuclei. The change of mechanism with increasing supersaturation underscores the importance of an accurate determination of the driving force for phase separation. The study has broader implications on the mechanism for nucleation of crystals from solutions at high supersaturations.
Metallic clusters on a model surface: quantum versus geometric effects

Abstract:We determine the structure and melting behavior of supported metallic clusters using an ab initio density-functional-based treatment of intracluster interactions and an approximate treatment of the surface as an idealized smooth plane yielding an effective Lennard-Jones interaction with the ions of the cluster. We apply this model to determine the structure of sodium clusters containing from 4 to 22 atoms, treating the cluster-surface interaction strength as a variable parameter. For a strong cluster-surface interaction, the clusters form two-dimensional (2D) monolayer structures; comparisons with calculations of structure and dissociation energy performed with a classical Gupta interatomic potential show clearly the role of quantum shell effects in the metallic binding in this case, and evidence is presented that these shell effects correspond to those for a confined 2D electron gas. The thermodynamics and melting behavior of a supported Na_20 cluster is considered in detail using the model for several cluster-surface interaction strengths. We find quantitative differences in the melting temperatures and caloric curve from density-functional and Gupta treatments of the valence electrons. A clear dimensional effect on the melting behavior is also demonstrated, with 2D structures showing melting temperatures above those of the bulk or (at very strong cluster-surface interactions) no clear meltinglike transition.
Atomic scale insights into NaCl nucleation in nanoconfined environments

Abstract:In this work we examine the nucleation from NaCl aqueous solutions within nano-confined environments, employing enhanced sampling molecular dynamics simulations integrated with machine learning-derived reaction coordinates. Through our simulations, we successfully induce phase transitions between solid, liquid, and a hydrated phase, typically observed at lower temperatures in bulk environments. Interestingly, nano-confinement serves to stabilize the solid phase and elevate melting points. Our simulations explain these findings by underscoring the significant role of water, alongside ion aggregation and subtle, anistropic dielectric behavior, in driving nucleation within nano-constrained environments. This letter thus provides a framework for sampling, analyzing and understanding nucleation processes under nano-confinement.

Electric Field’s Dueling Effects through Dehydration and Ion Separation in Driving NaCl Nucleation at Charged Nanoconfined Interfaces

Abstract:Investigating nucleation in charged nanoconfined environments is crucial for many scientific and engineering applications. Here we under electric fields is essential for the design of materials. We study the nucleation of NaCl from aqueous solution near charged surfaces using machine-learning-augmented enhanced sampling molecular dynamics simulations. Our simulations successfully drive phase transitions between liquid and solid phases of NaCl. The solid phase is stabilized under electric fields, particularly at an intermediate surface charge density. We examine which physical characteristics drive the nucleation of NaCl from aqueous solutions and find that the removal of solvent water from Cl- at the solid precursor surface plays a more critical role than the accumulation of ions. Our simulations reveal the competing effects of electric fields on nucleation processes: they facilitate the removal of water, promoting nucleation, but also promote the separation of ion pairs thereby hindering nucleation. This work provides a framework for studying nucleation processes in nanoconfined environments under electric fields and physical insights for the design of electrochemistry materials.

Abstract:The nature of the interface between the solute and the solvent in a colloidal solution has attracted attention for a long time. For example, the surface of colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) is specially designed to impart colloidal stability in a variety of polar and nonpolar solvents. This work focuses on a special type of colloids where the solvent is a molten inorganic salt or organic ionic liquid. The stability of such colloids is hard to rationalize because solvents with high density of mobile charges efficiently screen the electrostatic double-layer repulsion, and purely ionic molten salts represent an extreme case where the Debye length is only similar to 1 angstrom. We present a detailed investigation of NC dispersions in molten salts and ionic liquids using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), atomic pair distribution function (PDF) analysis and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Our SAXS analysis confirms that a wide variety of NCs (Pt, CdSe/CdS, InP, InAs, ZrO2) can be uniformly dispersed in molten salts like AlCl3/NaCl/KCl (AlCl3/AlCl4-) and NaSCN/KSCN and in ionic liquids like 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium halides (BMIM+X-, where X = Cl, Br, I). By using a combination of PDF analysis and molecular modeling, we demonstrate that the NC surface induces a solvent restructuring with electrostatic correlations extending an order of magnitude beyond the Debye screening length. These strong oscillatory ion-ion correlations, which are not accounted by the traditional mechanisms of steric and electrostatic stabilization of colloids, offer additional insight into solvent-solute interactions and enable apparently "impossible" colloidal stabilization in highly ionized media.

Abstract:The generation of magic number silica clusters [(SiO2)(n)O2H3](-) with n = 4 and 8 by XeCl laser (308 nm) ablation of porous siliceous materials is reported. The production of magic cluster [(SiO2)(4)O2H3](-) can be enhanced by sample selection and experimental optimization so that it becomes the most prominent species in silica clusters. To study the structure of the magic cluster [(SiO2)(4)O2H3](-), we performed structural optimization for the neutral bare cluster (SiO2)(4), the neutral complex cluster (SiO2)(4)O2H4, and the anionic cluster [(SiO2)(4)O2H3](-) at the HF/6-31G** level. It was found that the ground state of the bare silica tetramer has a linear chain structure whereas a pseudotetrahedral cage-like structural isomer of Sq symmetry is most stable for the complex cluster (SiO2)(4)O2H4 The stabilization of the three-dimensional (3D) structure can be attributed to the active participation of the O2H4 group in chemical bonding during cluster formation. Our theoretical calculation and bonding analysis indicate that the magic number anionic cluster [(SiO2)(4)O2H3](-) might also take a pseudotetrahedral structure similar to (but with a different symmetry) that of the neutral precursor (SiO2)(4)O2H4 as the ground state in which the valence, coordination, and bonding characteristics of all the constituent atoms are nearly fully satisfied.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics(MD) simulations are carried out on the nucleation and recrystallization of(KCl)256,(KCl)500,and(KCl)864clusters with Born-Mayer-Huggins interaction potential.The melting temperatures,heats of fusion,average ionic diffusion coefficients,nucleation rates,solid-liquid interfacial free energies,and critical nucleus sizes are estimated and discussed based on the results of MD simulations and classical nucleation theory.On the other hand,solid state recrystallization from twin crystal(KCl)864cluster is observed during the thermal annealing process in MD simulations.The nucleation rates of recrystallization of(KCl)864 are derived within 250-400 K.
