Abstract:In a certain magnetic field, spin exchange collision is one of the limiting factors for coherence preserving in atomic magnetometers, which directly affects the detection sensitivity that the magnetometer can achieve. The light narrowing effect can be used to reduce the resonance linewidth caused by spin-exchange collisions. Previous observations of the light narrowing effect arc based on atomic magnetometers with continuous pumped laser and radio frequency field, which have additional effects on the atomic resonance linewidth. Based on a pulse-pumped atomic magnetometer, the effects of atomic destructive collisions and magnetic field inhomogeneity on resonance linewidth arc greatly reduced, and a direct experimental observation and verification of the light narrowing effect arc realized. As pulse-pumped mode is beneficial to the realization of high atomic polarization, the study of light narrowing effect is of great importance for exploring the sensitivity limit of pulse-pumped atomic magnetometers.
The Spin Hall Effect of Light and In-Plane Spin Separation of Light

Abstract:When a spatially limited light beam is reflected and refracted at an interface, its two spin components or the left- and right-circularly polarized beams acquire opposite transverse displacements perpendicular to the plane of incidence. Recently, this novel spin Hall effect of light has attracted much attention. We review the research in this field, focusing especially on the measurement of the separation on the nanometer scale. We have also observed the spin separation of light in the plane of incidence when a line- arly polarized beam is reflected and refracted at a planar dielectric interface. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:We theoretically and experimentally demonstrate that it is possible to directly observe the resolvable spin separation in the spin Hall effect of light at an air-glass interface by choosing optimal parameters. When a P-polarized light with a beam waist of 10 μm is incident around Brewster's angle, the two spin components of the reflected beam can be completely separated by eliminating the influence of the in-plane wavevector spread. This not only obviously reveals the strong impacts of the polarization state, the incident angle, the beam waist, and the in-plane wavevector spread, but also intuitively visualizes the observation of the spin Hall effect of light.

Abstract:In the spin Hall effect of light (SHEL) with an incident linear polarization, the left circularly polarized (LCP) and the right circularly polarized (RCP) spin components are transversely shifted to opposite sides of the incident plane. We find that each spin component of the reflected or the refracted light is actually the coherent superposition of a pair with the same handedness. The two parts in a pair are generated by both the incident LCP and RCP components, respectively, and have different transverse shifts. Their weighted shifts lead to the overall displacement of the corresponding spin component. This perspective can successfully elucidate the dependence of the SHEL spin separations on the angle of polarization of the incident electric field.

Abstract:We report on the observation of the spin separation of light in the plane of incidence when a linearly polarized beam is reflected or refracted at a planar dielectric interface. Remarkably, the in-plane spin separation reaches hundreds of nanometers, comparable with the transverse spin separation induced by the well-known spin Hall effect of light. The observation is properly explained by considering the in-plane spread of wave-vectors. This study thus offers new insights on the spinoptics and may provide a potential method to control light in optical nanodevices.

Abstract:Light carries spin angular momentum, which, in the free space, is aligned to the direction of propagation and leads to intriguing spin Hall phenomena at an interface. Recently, it was shown that a transverse-spin (T-spin) state could exist for surface waves at an interface or for bulk waves inside a judiciously engineered metamaterial, with the spin oriented perpendicular to the propagation direction. Here, we demonstrate the spin Hall effect for transversely spinning light—a T-spin–induced beam shift at the interface of a metamaterial. It is found that the beam shift takes place in the plane of incidence, in contrast to the well-known Imbert-Fedorov shifts. The observed T-spin–induced beam shift is of geometrodynamical nature, which can be rendered positive or negative controlled by the orientation of T-spin of the photons. The unconventional spin Hall effect of light found here provides a previously unexplored mechanism for manipulating light-matter interactions at interfaces.

Abstract:Using the sensitivity of atomic transitions on the polarizations of pump fields in multi-Zeeman-sublevel atomic systems, we show the polarization-direction-dependent anisotropic susceptibility of atoms that yields the strong coupling between the spin and the transverse momentum of light, i.e., spin–orbit interaction (SOI). Moreover, we also show that the spin-Hall effect of light can be obtained due to SOI. It can be controlled via the orientation of the anisotropy and frequency of light, and substantially enhanced up to several micrometers, which could be easily observed in experiment.

Abstract:We propose an optical means to realize a spin hall effect (SHE) in neutral atomic system by coupling the internal spin states of atoms to radiation. The interaction between the external optical fields and the atoms creates effective magnetic fields that act in opposite directions on "electrically" neutral atoms with opposite spin polarizations. This effect leads to a Landau level structure for each spin orientation in direct analogy with the familiar SHE in semiconductors. The conservation and topological properties of the spin current, and the creation of a pure spin current are discussed.

Abstract:In many areas of physics, the propagation of wave packets carrying intrinsic angular momentum is generally influenced by spin-orbit interactions. This is the main mechanism behind spin Hall effects, which result in wave packets following spin-dependent trajectories. Spin Hall effects have been observed in several experiments for electrons in condensed matter systems and for light propagating in inhomogeneous optical media. Similar effects have also been predicted for wave packets propagating in inhomogeneous gravitational fields. We give a brief introduction to gravitational spin Hall effects, emphasizing the analogies with the spin Hall effect of light in optics. Furthermore, we review the most promising astrophysical avenues that could lead to experimental observations of the gravitational spin Hall effect.

Abstract:We theoretically and experimentally study the spin Hall effect of reflected light at an air-uniaxial crystal interface. The spin-dependent nanometer-sized displacements depend not only on the incident polarization and the incident angle of the light beam, but also on the orientation of the crystal optic axis. The experimental results are in perfect agreement with theoretical predictions for the vertical and horizontal polarization incidence.

Abstract:We report the realization of tunable spin-dependent splitting in intrinsic photonic spin Hall effect. By breaking the rotational symmetry of a cylindrical vector beam, the intrinsic vortex phases that the two spin components of the vector beam carries, which is similar to the geometric Pancharatnam-Berry phase, is no longer continuous in the azimuthal direction, and leads to observation of spin accumulation at the opposite edge of the beam. Due to the inherent nature of the phase and independency of light-matter interaction, the observed photonic spin Hall effect is intrinsic. Modulating the topological charge of the vector beam, the spin-dependent splitting can be enhanced and the direction of spin accumulation is switchable. Our findings may provide a possible route for generation and manipulation of spin-polarized photons, and enables spin-based photonics applications.

Abstract:We theoretically and experimentally study the spin separations of femtosecond laser pulses reflected from an air–glass interface. Due to the broad spectral bandwidths, the displacements induced by the spin Hall effect of light and the in-plane spin separation of light are dependent on the pulse durations. Their lower frequency components acquire larger separations. To accurately measure the separations, the intensity distribution of the pulses and the spectral responsivity of the detector should be taken into account.

Abstract:The interaction between light's spin and orbital angular momentum under nonparaxial conditions not only facilitates many fundamental sciences but also underpins a variety of applications. Such a strong coupling between the two separable dimensions normally occurs when light propagates through nanoscale inhomogeneous media or under tight focusing. In this regard, subwavelength scrutinizing the spatial distribution of such light attributes is of utmost importance. Here, we demonstrate a nanointerferometric scheme to map light's spin and orbital angular momentum with a subwavelength resolution via the interferometric scattering signal from a plasmonic nanohole. Abstract:Optical bound states in the continuum (BICs) are exotic topological defects in photonic crystal slabs, carrying polarization topological vortices in momentum space. The topological vortex configurations not only topologically protect the infinite radiation lifetime of BICs, but also intrinsically contain many unexploited degrees of freedom for light manipulation originating from BICs. Here, we theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate the spin Hall effect of light in photonic crystal slabs via momentum-space topological vortices around BICs. The strong spin-orbit interactions of light are induced by using the topological vortices around BICs, introducing both wave-vector-dependent Pancharatnam-Berry phase gradients and cross-polarized resonant phase gradients to the spinning light beam, which lead to spin-dependent in-plane-oblique lateral light beam shifts. Our work reveals intriguing spin-related topological effects around BICs, opening an avenue toward applications of BICs in integrated spin-optical devices and information processing.

Abstract:The spin Hall effect of a light beam is essentially a product of circular birefringence but is rarely demonstrated. Here, we provide a scheme for initiating off-axis circular birefringence based on the spin-dependent wave vector bifurcation of Bessel beams via a single liquid crystal Pancharatnam–Berry phase element. The tilted Bessel beam shows a detectable photonic spin Hall effect. By introducing the nonlinear propagation trajectories, the spin Hall effect is greatly enhanced. More surprisingly, the two spin states exactly propagate along the scaled trajectories, enabling flexible control of the spin separation. This phenomenon is also applicable to other Bessel-like beams with nonlinear trajectories, which have been already reported.

Abstract:Transverse spin splitting is a novel optical phenomenon which stems from the spin-orbit interaction of light. In this paper, we reveal the perfect transverse spin splitting in the scattered far-field of a single particle with bianisotropy. It is the result of the polarization twist effect caused by the omega-type bianisotropy of the structure in which the magnetic and electric fields interact in an unusual way and form a transverse spin dipole moment. Based on the dipole model, we conducted a detailed theoretical analysis of the relationship between the magnetoelectric coupling and the polarization state of the scattered far field. Our method reveals a physical mechanism of splitting the spin state of incident light which is regarded as a kind of giant spin Hall effect. Moreover, this perfect transverse spin splitting can also be understood by the separation of far-field polarization singularities. Our results provide a new platform for manipulating the spin state in the scattered far field and open an avenue for designing the spin structure.

Controllable spin-Hall and related effects of light in an atomic medium via coupling fields

Abstract:We show the existence of spin-Hall effect of light (SHEL) in an atomic medium which is made anisotropic via electromagnetically induced transparency. The medium is made birefringent by applying an additional linearly polarized coupling light beam. The refractive index and the orientation of the optics axis are controlled by the coupling beam. We show that after transmitting the atomic medium, a linearly polarized probe light beam splits into its two spin components by opposite transverse shifts. With proper choice of parameters and atomic density of about $2.5times10^{17},mathrm{m}^{-3}$, the shifts are about the order of wavelength and can be larger than the wavelength by increasing the atomic density. We propose a novel measurement scheme based on a balanced homodyne detection (BHD). By properly choosing the polarization, phase, and transverse mode of the local oscillator of the BHD, one can independently measure (i) the SHEL shifts of the two spin components; (ii) the spatial and angular shifts; (iii) the transverse and longitudinal shifts. The measurement can reach the quantum limit of precision by detecting signals at the modulation frequency of the electro-optic modulator used to modulate the input probe beam. The precision is estimated to be at the nanometer level limited by the quantum noise.

Abstract:The displacements for |P> polarization (electric field parallel to the plane-of-incidence) and |S> polarization (electric field perpendicular to the plane-of-incidence) induced by the spin Hall effect of light reflected from a magnetic cobalt thin film have been investigated. The significant differences from those of an air-glass interface are attributed to the special complex permittivity and refractive index of the cobalt film. The real part of the complex refractive index has more influence on displacements for |P> polarization than for |S> polarization. There also exists a particular incident angle corresponding to the zero displacement for |P> polarization. It shifts from 52° to 76° when the real part rises from 1.0 to 4.0. For both |P> and |S> polarizations, the maximal displacements rapidly rise with the decrease of the imaginary part. Our simulations further demonstrate that polarization-insensitive spin separations can be realized by choosing the medium with an optimal permeability.
