Abstract:The key to further elucidate and enrich the academic concept or discourse of “socialist eco-civilization” lies in that it cannot be simplified or falsified in reality as a public policy of ecological environment governance, but be separated from the grander and more important background and context of “socialist modernization with Chinese characteristics” and “socialist theory with Chinese characteristics.” More specifically, the discourse and politics of “socialist eco-civilization,” compared with various forms of “eco-centrism” or “eco-capitalism,” can (or should) represent the essence or goal of contemporary China’s eco-civilization construction strategy. Therefore, the theory of “social-ecological transformation” (SET) advocated and promoted by the “green-left” academic circles in the Western countries, as well as other radical transformation theories in other areas of the world, may not eventually lead to a “great transformation” or even a “socialist transformation” of contemporary capitalist society, but it does provide us some enlightenments on methodology (discourse) and politics of constructing a socialist eco-civilization in China today.

Abstract:Under a particular context of China' eco-civilization construction in the New Era after the 18th national congress of CPC, an interesting question is that the discourse of socialist eco-civilization and its practice can to what an extent reshape or change the relationship among eco-capital, green technology and public participation in achieving a better environmental governance. A field-study in Fuzhou City, Jiangxi Province, shows clearly that there are both great hope for a radical reconstruction and multitudinous difficulties and challenges in front of the pioneering Green enterprises and the pilot areas of eco-civilization construction.

Abstract:This book introduces the concept of Eco-civilization, highlights the construction and development of eco-cities in China, and assesses the achievements and shortcomings of China’s eco-city construction projects. As both China and Western countries face an impending ecological crisis, responding to that crisis is a common challenge for all human beings. There is an overwhelming consensus among Chinese scholars that in order to successfully address the ecological crisis successfully we must establish an eco-civilization, and one important step toward accomplishing that goal is to plan and construct eco-cities.

Abstract:Ecological civilization (shengtai wenming ) has been written into China’s constitution as the ideological framework for the country’s environmental policies, laws and education. It is also increasingly presented not only as a response to environmental degradation in China, but as a vision for our global future. In this article, scholars from the disciplines of media science, anthropology and sinology analyse media representations of eco-civilization in order to explore which values and visions this highly profiled state project actually entails. The article argues that eco-civilization is best understood as a sociotechnical imaginary in which cultural and moral virtues constitute key components that are inseparable from the more well-known technological, judicial, and political goals. The imaginary of eco-civilization seeks to construct a sense of cultural and national continuity, and to place China at the center of the world by invoking its civilization’s more than 2000 years of traditional philosophical heritage as a part of the solution for the planet’s future. It is constructed as a new kind of Communist Party led utopia in which market economy and consumption continue to grow, and where technology and science have solved the basic problems of pollution and environmental degradation.

Abstract:Eco-civilization, as a civilizational discourse led by China, implies the next stage of civilization after industrial civilization, the essence of which is to respect, conform to, and protect nature. Although the international community is paying more attention to eco-civilization, the existing literature still lacks a systematic discussion of which theories and practices underpin the construction of eco-civilization. Due to the ambiguity of eco-civilization, some even criticize it as being a form of purely partisan politics in China. By systematically reviewing its theoretical pillars, practical actions, and major achievements, this perspective paper argues that China's eco-civilization is not a partisan politics, but rather a legitimate, imperative pathway to global sustainable development rooted in complementary theory and practice, i.e., theories guide practices, and practices enrich theories. We highlight that the theoretical basis and practical actions of eco-civilization constitute a continual improvement process that permits diverse viewpoints and understanding, and any action exploring how to achieve a harmonious coexistence between humans and nature is consistent with the values of eco-civilization.

Abstract:Research of ecological Marxism reminds us that ecological problems are to a large extent caused by the expanding and deepening of social relations and natural relations in capitalist society, and thus the real way to o-vercome ecological problems lies in the gradual elimination of social relations and nature relations of capitalism. Its implications to ecological civilization construction in China are:first, we need to adhere to the socialist goals and direction of constructing ecological civilization;and second, we need to keep a prudent attitude and try to transcend the world′s dominant order and framework.In this regard, contemporary China has a huge potential in its construction of a socialist ecological civilization,which has not yet received enough attention from either theory elite or practice innovators.

Abstract:While identifying the emerging features of China's economy as a growth economy, this chapter argues that the real ecological threat is the increasing dependence of Chinese economy and society on economic growth itself, and that building socialist ecological civilisation, or a new pattern of eco-socialism, may function as a greener and more fruitful political ecology to resist or reverse this tendency. After 30 years of carrying out the reform and openness policy, in the author's observation, China is standing at a crucial crossroad: not very much in terms of the stages of its economic growth, but whether or not it can move forward to a sustainable future.

Abstract:The construction of ecological civilization in China is not only a discourse, but also a practical strategy. At the same time, it is also a Marxist response put forward by China in the process of promoting its own economic and social practice. This response has concentrated on achieving "the harmonious coexistence of humanity and nature." What exactly is ecological civilization (<i>shengtai wenming</i>)? This is the first theoretical issue that needs clarification. Furthermore, why is ecological civilization popular in China, but not ecological modernization theory, organic Marxism, ecological Marxism, or something else? At present, China's ecological environment is facing enormous challenges and pressures, and it also presents corresponding opportunities and factors of change. This seems to explain why there is a wave of ecological civilization construction in China. In this context, China needs to adjust its strategy and make some changes, including focusing on the quality of urbanization and strengthening of urban and rural integration, promoting public participation in environmental governance, building a green economy and strengthening ecological legislation to truly move towards ecological civilization.

Abstract:The idea of a socialist ecological civilization with Chinese characteristics is based on the latest provisions of Marxist theory applied to China’s current ecological environment. Responsible attitude contributes to the continuing formation of people’s awareness of the need for ecological protection, which in turn leads to the expansion of ecological practical activities; this shows that the idea of socialist ecological civilization with Chinese characteristics has very high theoretical and practical value. China’s ecological civilization has created an advanced national development strategy and now it is gradually putting it into practice. China is actively transforming its economic development mode, reducing energy and material consumption, limiting obsolete production capacity, insisting on collaborative innovation, and promoting sustainable economic development. Under the guidance of Xi Jinping’s ecological civilization thought, the society is consciously striving to respect and protect nature. In this paper, the authors analyze China’s Ecological Civilization from the historical point of view, explain the conceptual framework of China’ Ecological Civilization Thoughts and describe the primary steps of China’s ecological civilization development.

Abstract:This article explores the concept of sustainability in a postsocialist context through an analysis of official discourses relating to sustainability in more than 700 articles published in the Chinese‐language newspaper People's Daily in 2015. The Chinese conception of sustainability, which emerges as a top‐down model built upon traditional ideologies and Chinese socialist legacies, inclusive of economic growth, environmental sustainability, social justice and quality of life. This Chinese official discourse of sustainability places less emphasis on individuals' rights and more on the state's interests, and is encompassed in the Chinese concept of the “ecological civilization.” This article argues that if we are to build a full picture of the internationalized idea of sustainability we need to adopt a more international approach to thinking about the issue, drawing upon the sustainability‐related discourses constructed from different national contexts using local languages and rhetoric.
