Abstract:In this paper, a novel diamine ligand of 2-(pyridin-2-yl)-5-p-tolyl-1.3.4-oxadiazole (PTO) and its corresponding Cu(I) complex of [Cu(PTO)(PPh3)2]BF4 with triphenylphosphine (PPh3) as the auxiliary ligand are synthesized. Single crystal analysis confirms its identity. Its photophysical properties, including UV–vis absorption, emission spectrum, and luminescence decay dynamics, are measured and studied. The room temperature luminescence is a yellow one with long excited state lifetime of 64.4μs under pure nitrogen atmosphere. Combined with density functional calculation on the cation of the Cu(I) complex, the yellow emission is assigned as a phosphorescent character of metal-to-ligand-charge-transfer, whose excited state is expected to be sensitive towards molecular oxygen. [Cu(PTO)(PPh3)2]BF4 is then doped into a silica supporting matrix of MCM-41 to construct an oxygen-sensitive probe of [Cu(PTO)(PPh3)2]BF4/MCM-41, which shows a maximum sensitivity (luminescence intensity in O2 medium/intensity in N2 medium) of 5.95 towards oxygen with short response time of 10s. This sensing system shows a good photodurability upon continuous excitation radiation.

Abstract:Binuclear complex [Cu2 (mu-I)2 (phen)2] x CH3CN(1)(phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) was synthesized under solvothermal conditions and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectrum, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that complex 1 is monoclinic, space group P2(1/n), and the cell parameters are: alpha = 10.505 A, b = 23.628 A, c = 10. 676 A, alpha = 90, beta = 91.40 degrees and gamma = 90 degrees. The authors have studied the luminescence property of 1, Complex 1 has blue-purple luminescence in solutions of DMSO with emission bands at 369, 380 and 460sh nm; and has red luminescence in the solid state at room temperature with a broad emission band at 650-678 nm. These all can be attributed to the pi* --> pi transition based on the ligand. In the solid state, the emission frequencies for complex 1 are red-shifted about 280 nm compared with their emission maximum peaks in solutions of DMSO. This red-shift of emission energy from solution to solid is likely to be caused by the intermolecular pi--pi packing interaction in the solid state which effectively decreases the energy gap. The fluorescence decay curve of complex 1 indicated that the processes of decay consists of two components, whose corresponding lifetimes are tau1 = 1.36 micros and tau2 = 5.98 micros, corresponding factors are 50.21% and 49.79% in DMSO solutions, and tau1 = 1.42 micros, tau2 = 8.85 micros, corresponding factors are 51.15% and 48.85% in the solid state.

Abstract:A series of five-coordinated 2,6-bis(imino)pyridyl Cu(II) complexes, [2,6-(ArN=CMe)(2)C(5)H(3)N-CuCl(2)center dot nCH(3)CN] (Ar = 4-MeC(6)H(4), n = 0.5, Cu1; Ar = 2,6-Et(2)C(6)H(3), n = 1, Cu2; Ar = 2,4,6-Me(3)C(6)H(2), n = 1, Cu3; Ar = 2,6-Me(2)C(6)H(3), n = 0, Cu4; Ar = 2-MeC(6)H(4), n = 1, Cu5), were synthesized in acetonitrile by reactions of the corresponding bis(imino)pyridine ligands with CuCl(2)center dot 2H(2)O, respectively. The structures of five complexes were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In all complexes, the metal center is tridentately chelated by ligand and further coordinated by two chlorine atoms, resulting in distorted trigonal-bipyramidal geometry for Cu1, Cu3, Cu4, and Cu5, respectively, and approximately square-pyramidal geometry for Cu2. At 298 K in dichloromethane solution, all complexes exhibit blue-green luminescent emissions at about 478-499 nm, which could be attributed to ligand-centered pi* -> pi transitions. However, fluorescent emission of complexes Cu1-Cu5 is significantly weaker than those of ligands, which could be attributed to fluorophore-quencher interactions via paramagnetic Cu(II) center. Abstract:A cationic phosphorescent iridium complex 1 was synthesized, which can selectively detect Cu2+ confirmed by the luminescence spectra titration. In the presence of Cu2+, the obvious decrease of the luminescence intensity at 600nm was investigated. The complex has been shown to display high selectivity for Cu2+ over other metal ions. The strong selective coordination interaction with Cu2+ is responsible for the significant change of the luminescence spectra, which is further confirmed by ESI-MS.

Abstract:Copper ions (Cu2+) play an indispensable role in both human body and eco-environment, so it is crucial to create simple, highly sensitive and selective sensors to recognize Cu2+ ions. In this work, three efficient iridium(III) complexes, [(L1)2Ir(Czdtc)] (Ir1, L1 = 6-phenylnicotinaldehyde), [(L2)2Ir(Czdtc)] (Ir2, L2 = 6-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)nicotinaldehyde) and [(L3)2Ir(Czdtc)] (Ir3, L3 = 6-(4-methoxyphenyl)nicotinaldehyde) comprising a four-membered Ir-S-C-S ring backbone with 9H-carbazole-9-carbodithioate(Czdtc) as ancillary ligands, were synthesized within 10 minutes at room temperature, and developed as efficient chemical sensors to detect Cu2+ ions. Ir1–Ir3 exhibited broad emission bands peaking between 575 and 593 nm with PLQY in the range of 0.34–0.70 and lifetimes ranging from 1.3 to 1.8 μs. In acetonitrile solution, they showed sensitive response to Cu2+ ions with low detection limit on the order of 10–7 M with a stoichiometric ratio of 1: 1, and distinct colorimetric changes (from red to yellow) were observed by naked eye. Nanofibrous film decorated with these complexes fabricated by electrospinning technology could realize on-site detection of Cu2+ ions, based on obvious contrasting luminescence color different from background under 365 nm UV lamp. The fastly synthesized Ir1–Ir3 decorated in nanofibrous film could be used as solid-phase sensing devices with low-cost, high efficiency, and portability, providing a promising prospect for the detection of Cu2+ ions in the environment.

Abstract:A novel Eu3+ complex coordinated by polymers with beta-diketone pendant groups (Eu3+-PDKMA) has been synthesized for Cu2+ cation and acid-base vapor detections. Its sensitive and selective response to Cu2+ is confirmed by fluorescence quenching of characteristic emission of Eu3+ at 612 nm wavelength. The fluorescence intensity of Eu3+-PDKMA obeys linear relationship at the presence of Cu2+ with the concentration in the order of 10(-7) mol L-1. The detection limit of Cu2+ is as low as 2.0 x 10(-8) mol L-1 at natural pH, which makes Eu3+-PDKMA an excellent luminescent sensor. Portable strips containing Eu3+-PDKMA can be easily prepared to detect Cu2+ in aqueous solution. Moreover, the same strips can also be used to recognize and sense acidic and basic environments by naked eye. The red emission can be switched "off" and "on" when the strips contact acid and base vapors, respectively. The produced strips exhibit relatively fast response time less than 10 s, and good reusability over 10 times. The Eu3+-PDKMA materials are promising in biological and environmental applications.

Abstract:A novel efficient luminescent chemosensor based on a 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (cyclen)-tethered Ru(bpy)(3)(2)+ derivative (Ru-cyclen) has been synthesized and characterized. It displays an ON-OFF-type luminescence change with excellent selectivity towards Cu(II) amongst 16 metal ions in 100% aqueous solution. The binding stoichiometry of Ru-cyclen with Cu2+ was established by Job plot analysis and mass spectral evidence. Furthermore, the in situ generated Ru-cyclen-Cu ensemble recovered luminescence in the presence of S-2(-), indicating an 'OFF-ON'-type sensing process. Similar phenomena were not observed with other common anions and biothiols, making it a high selective sulfide probe. Finally, the sensing mechanism is confirmed to be displacement approach by NMR, mass and emission spectrometry.

Abstract:Eight neutral iridium(III) complexes (Ir1–Ir8) containing an electron-withdrawing pentafluorosulfanyl (−SF5) group on cyclometalated ligands with different ancillary ligands were synthesized and investigated. 2-(3/4-(Pentafluorosulfanyl)phenyl)pyrimidine (for Ir1 and Ir2), 1-(3/4-(pentafluorosulfanyl)phenyl)isoquinoline (for Ir3 and Ir4), and 2-(3/4-(pentafluorosulfanyl)phenyl)pyridine (for Ir5–Ir8) were chosen as cyclometalated ligands and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylheptane-3,5-dione (for Ir1–Ir4), tetraphenylimidodiphosphinate (for Ir5 and Ir6), and bis(diphenylphorothioyl)amide (for Ir7 and Ir8) were used as ancillary ligands. The crystal structures of Ir1, Ir3, Ir4, Ir6, and Ir8 also confirmed the identities of these complexes. Complexes Ir1, Ir2, and Ir5–Ir8 exhibit sky blue to green emissions (480–533 nm) with high photoluminescence quantum efficiency yields up to 94.7% in CH2Cl2 solution at room temperature. Complexes Ir3 and Ir4 are red phosphors (λmax = 607 nm, Φ = 76.8% for Ir3 and λmax = 627 nm, Φ = 49.2% for Ir4, respectively). Theoretical calculations were carried out to provide a further study of the orbital distributions and electronic states of eight Ir(III) complexes. Additionally, ion detection studies reveal that Ir2 has the potential for detecting Hg2+ ion.
Two phosphorescent iridium(III) complexes containing simple l-alanine ligands as efficient sensors for Cu 2+ ions

Abstract:Two neutral iridium complexes Ir1 and Ir2 were synthesized using 2-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)pyridine (tfmppy) and 1-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)isoquinoline (tfmpiq) as cyclometalated ligands and l -alanine as ancillary ligand. The emission peaks of Ir1 and Ir2 are located at 518 nm and 610 nm and they exhibit intense green and red luminescence in acetonitrile solution with quantum efficiencies of 0.51 and 0.20. The effect of the modification of cyclometalated ligands on the spectral properties of the complexes was discussed in detail by theoretical calculation. After the addition of Cu 2+ ions, the luminescence intensities of Ir1 and Ir2 were quenched by 90 % and 89 % respectively due to the paramagnetic effect formed by the combination of iridium complexes and Cu 2+ ions. According to the titration experiment, a good linear relationship was found between the intensity at the emission peak and Cu 2+ ions concentrations in the range of 0 μM to 15 μM, and the calculated detection limits were 0.54 μM and 0.59 μM. Moreover, the recognition of Cu 2+ ions by Ir1 and Ir2 exhibits high interference and good reversibility. Therefore, complexes Ir1 and Ir2 containing simple amino acid as ancillary ligands can be used as "turn-off" phosphorescence sensors toward Cu 2+ ions.

Abstract:A series of phosphorescent zwitterionic iridium(III) complexes, with 4-carboxy-2, 2'-bipyridine-4'-carboxylate (Hdcbpy) as ancillary ligand, Ir(C(wedge)N)(2)(Hdcbpy) (C(wedge)N = 1-phenylpyrazole (ppz), 1-phenyl-pyridine (ppy), 2-(4',6'-difluoro-phenyl)pyridine (dfppy), 1-phenyl-isoquinoline (piq), dibenzo[f,h]quinoxaline (dbq)), were prepared and characterized. Their photophysical properties were studied, and intense luminescence emissions were observed based on metal-to-ligand-charge-transfer ((3)MLCT), ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer ((3)LLCT), ligand-centered transitions ((3)LC, i.e., (3)pi --> pi*), or intraligand-charge-transfer ((3)ILCT) excited states, which were confirmed by theoretical calculations. The quantum yield of Ir(dfppy)(2)(Hdcbpy) is as high as 0.106 in aqueous solution. With Hdcbpy as a hydrophilic part, their amphiphilic structures as further confirmed by X-ray single crystal data endow them with different solubilities in phosphate buffer solution (PBS, pH 7.0). The compounds were successfully applied as luminescent dyes for cell imaging in aqueous solution. Their different stain ability in cell imaging was fairly well supported by the experimental data based on the measurement of oil/water partition coefficients and encapsulation/release with liposomes.
Enhanced emission and analyte sensing by cinchonine iridium(III) cyclometalated complexes bearing bent diphosphine chelators

Abstract:Ir(III) complexes of cyclometalating ligands derived from the natural product cinchonine and bent (4,6-bis(diphenylphosphino)phenoxazine (Nixantphos), 4,5-bis(diphenylphosphino)-9,9-dimethybcanthene (Xantphos)) and planar diphosphine ligands (1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)benzene (dppb)) exhibit good luminescence with quantum efficiencies higher than those of their parent congeners. Steric hindrance by both the bulky cinchonine-derived ligand and bent diphosphine could limit nonradiative energy transfer. The cinchonine-derived and parent complexes cover a broad emission range from 472 to 569 nm with quantum efficiencies up to 0,38 and lifetimes from 0.01 to 0.46 mu s in degassed CH(2)C1(2) solution at room temperature. DFT calculations on selected examples are in good agreement with solid-state structures determined crystallographically and accurately predict wavelengths of emission by excited electron decay from a quinoline-centered orbital to an Ir 5d-phenyl molecular orbital. The complex [(pcn)(2)Ir-(Nixantphos)][PF6] (2; pcn = 2'-phenyl-9-O-benzyl-10,11-dihydrocinchonine-C-2,N) exhibits the highest quantum yield and could detect electron-deficient aromatic species at ppm levels.

Abstract:Cyclometalated Ir(iii) complexes [Ir(tpy)(bbibH2)Cl][PF6] (1·PF6) and [Ir(tpy)(bmbib)Cl][PF6] (2·PF6), and the control complex [Ir(tpy)(mbib)Cl][PF6] (3·PF6) were synthesized at 135 °C for 10 hours for the former two complexes, while at 190 °C for 24 hours for the latter complex, in which the cyclometalated ligands bbibH2-, bmbib- and mbib- incorporate one or two N-methylbenzoimidazole/benzimidazole units in order to explore the influence of the molecular structures of these complexes on their synthesis conditions and luminescence behaviors. The 1H NMR and crystal structure measurements indicate that both 1·PF6 and 2·PF6 contain intramolecular ππ stacking interactions between the non-coordinated N-methylbenzoimidazole/benzimidazole unit and the tpy ligand, but there are no such ππ interactions in 3·PF6. At room temperature, these complexes in CH3CN reveal an emission with a combination of 3MLCT and 3LC characteristics, occurring at 534 nm with a quantum yield Φ = 39.5% and a lifetime τ = 2.39 μs for 1·PF6, 536 nm with Φ = 66.4% and τ = 2.94 μs for 2·PF6, and 558 nm with Φ = 27.0% and τ = 1.75 μs for 3·PF6. Moreover, both 1·PF6 and 2·PF6 exhibit a TFA-induced luminescence decrease. Based on the comparison among 1·PF6, 2·PF6 and 3·PF6, we discuss the influence of intramolecular ππ interactions and Nimidazole-H/Nimidazole-CH3 units in 1·PF6 and 2·PF6 on their syntheses and luminescence.

Abstract:A new ratiometric fluorescent sensor for Cu(2+), WLN, has been developed via integrating a 1,8-naphthalimide fluorophore with 8-aminoquinoline. WLN exhibits a highly selective ratiometric response to Cu(2+) over other transition metal ions in aqueous media. Moreover, its practical ratiometric imaging ability for intracellular Cu(2+) has been confirmed in human breast adenocarcinoma cells (MCF-7 cells) using a confocal microscope.

Abstract:Ferric ion (Fe3+) is a biologically abundant and important metal ion. We developed several cyclometalated iridium complex‐based molecular sensors (1, ppy‐1, 1‐phen, 1a, and 1‐OMe) for the detection of Fe3+ using an acetal moiety as the reaction site. The acetal moiety in iridium complexes undergoes Fe3+‐catalyzed hydrolysis and subsequent formation of a formyl group, resulting in turn‐off photoluminescent and electrochemiluminescent responses. Sensor 1 showed excellent selectivity toward Fe3+ over other biologically important metal ions. Furthermore, we compared the performance of the sensors based on the structural differences of the iridium complexes, and revealed a relationship between the structure and chemical properties through electrochemical experiments and computational calculations.
