Abstract:Chlorinated compounds are widely used in the chemicals manufacturing industry. They have high toxicity and good stability, leading to the persistent pollution and damage of the ecological environment. In this study, pchlorophenol (p-CP) was selected as the model, and a new dechlorination system was developed, that is, tannic acid (TA) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) were used together to activate persulfate (PS). The effect of TA, NaOH, PS, and temperature on the degradation of chlorophenol was investigated. When 200 mg/L of TA, 0.4 M of NaOH and 100 mM of persulfate were used, the degradation efficiency of p-chlorophenol (50 mg/L) can reach 99 wt.%. There is no significant change in degradation efficiency when the reaction temperature is changed from 20 C to 40 C. The mechanism on the co-activation of persulfate with tannic acid and NaOH was proposed. The hydroxyl radicals and superoxide radicals play an important role in the degradation of p-CP. The dechlorination system showed excellent degradation performance for the chlorinated compounds, making it to be a potential oxidant for treatment of the contaminated groundwater.

Abstract:TiO2 loaded on the honeycomb ceramic was tentatively introduced into dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) in a radial-flow configuration, for plasma-induced photocatalytic degradation of a model organic pollutant thiamethoxam in water. The solution was made to flow as a film over the surface of the honeycomb ceramic, whose hydrophilic force kept the water surface undisturbed by the electrical discharge. This characteristic enabled a reduction of the discharge gap. The results indicated that rate constant of thiamethoxam degradation, energy utilization efficiency of thiamethoxam removal and TOC removal were significantly enhanced due to the synergy effect between the plasma discharge and the TiO2 photocatalysis. The system could adapt to a wide range of liquid conductivity. The TiO2 film was calcined at 500 degrees C and the crystal structure of the TiO2 showed no change after use. Higher concentration of H2O2 and[GRAPHICS]were obtained.
Phenol Degradation by TiO2 Photocatalysts Combined with Different Pulsed Discharge Systems.

Abstract:Films of TiO2 nanotubes distributed over the inner surface of a discharge reactor cylinder (CTD) or adhered to a stainless steel electrode surface (PTD) in a discharge reactor were compared with a single-discharge (SD) system to investigate their efficiencies in phenol degradation. Morphology studies indicated that the TiO2 film was destroyed in the PTD system, but that there was no change in the CTD system after discharge. X-ray diffraction results revealed that the anatase phase of the original sample was preserved in the CTD system, but that an anatase-to-rutile phase transformation occurred in the PTD system after discharge. The highest efficiencies of phenol degradation and total organic carbon (TOC) mineralization were observed in the CTD system, and there was no decrease in phenol degradation efficiency upon reuse of a TiO2 film, indicating high catalysis activity and stability of the TiO2 photocatalysts in the combined treatment. TiO2 photocatalysts favored the formation of hydrogen peroxide and disfavored the formation of ozone. A greater degree of oxidation of intermediates and higher energy efficiency in phenol oxidation were observed with the TiO2-plasma systems, especially in the CTD system, compared to those with the SD system.

Abstract:Phenol degradation was studied in a novel electrochemical system with TiO2/activated carbon fiber as anode and graphite as cathode. The removal of phenol was investigated in terms of various parameters namely: cathode and anode gap, pH, current density, initial phenol concentration and addition of Na2SO4. At the same time, percentages of phenol degradation and COD removal were observed at different electrodes. The results showed that, at the phenol concentration of 100 mg/L, cathode and anode gap of 2 cm, current density of 7.14 mA/cm(2), solution pH 6.20 and 0.0750 mol/L Na2SO4, degradation of 83.26% phenol and removal of 47.03% COD after 1 h electrolysis can be achieved with TiO2/ACF-graphite as anode, while 67.72% phenol and 35.78% COD achieved with ACF/graphite as anode. Under the same conditions mentioned above, no phenol can be detected in 105 min at the initial phenol concentration of 10 mg/L with TiO2/ACF-graphite as anode. The electrochemical oxidation reaction of phenol obeyed pseudo-first order kinetic. The mass adsorbed hydroxyl radicals were generated on the TiO2/ACF electrode due to its three-dimensional space, high oxygen evolution potential and the catalysis of TiO2. With the formation of hydroxyl radicals, the phenol was oxidized to produce hydroquinone, pyrocatechol and benzoquinone during electrochemical process. The concentrations of these three aromatic compounds achieve peak values after 3 h, 2 h and 1 h, respectively. Then, they gradually diminished and were degraded to form ring-opened products such as formic and maleic acids, which were oxidized to CO2 and H2O finally. (C) 2014 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:Using TiO2/Ni thin film electrode prepared by dip-coating technique as working electrode, the photoelectrocatalytic system with three kinds of electrodes is built. The advantages of combining photocatalysis with electrochemistry, by applying positive potentials (versus SCE) across the photoelectrode, are confirmed. And it is found that pH value of solution, initial phenol concentration, number of film layers and voltage of electrical bias applied have obvious influence on the degradation of phenol. Meanwhile, types of dissolved gas and inorganic ions do not significantly affect on the degradation of phenol.

Abstract:A trinity interaction model of 4,4′-biphenol photodegradation in TiO2 suspension containing cyclodextrin was proposed in this work. Both direct and indirect degradation should be taken into account. It would be beneficial to have a depth-in mechanism of CD effect on reactant's photodegradation in TiO2 suspension that would probably lead to a high efficiency and selectivity for the photodegradation of pollutants.

Abstract:Novel nanocomposites have been prepared by intercalating TiO2 nanoparticles into talc. The nanocomposites have been verified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) from the appearance of a characteristic diffraction peak of TiO2. Thermal behavior of the prepared samples is examined by thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), which have shown no TiO2 particles on the surface of the talc. The TiO2 particles are found in the layers of talc by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method, which have shown the increase of specific surface areas and total pore volumes and the decline of average pore diameters. As the strong adsorption ability of talc can intensify the power of photon absorption and capture-recombination carriers, more than 99.5% of 2,4-dichlorophenol can be degraded in 1h by the nanocomposite under an ultraviolet lamp in neutral solution and room temperature after reaching adsorption equilibrium, and the result of adsorbance is in accord with the first-order kinetic. The degradation rate was maintained at about 99% after 20 times. Therefore, the prepared talc/TiO2 nanocomposite is an efficient, stable, and recyclable material for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Ti-base CeO2/beta-PbO2 composite electrodes were prepared by using electro-deposition and its morphology and crystal structure and electrochemical characterization of composite electrodes were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), cyclic voltammetry and the accelerated life testing. The efficiency of electrocatalytic degradation of 4,4'-(propane-2,2diyl) diphenol (BPA) by using composite electrodes as anode were examined as a function of initial solution pH, applied voltage and supporting electrolyte concentration were investigated. The results showed that CeO2/beta-PbO2/Ti electrode had an excellent corrosion resistance and excellent catalytic performance higher catalytic activity in electro-chemical degradation of 4, 4'-(propane-2, 2- diyl) diphenol in water. The removal efficiency of CODCr could be reached 95.7% after 1.5 h electrolysis at NaCl concentration of 0.020 mol/L, 4,4'-(propane-2,2- diyl) diphenol initial concentration of 20 mg/L, applied voltage of 20 V, electrode spacing of 7 cm and electrolyte pH of 5. The reaction mechanism and kinetics of CeO2/beta-PbO2/Ti composite electrodes electrochemical degradation 4, 4'-(propane- 2, 2diyl) diphenol mainly caused by the OH radical attacking parent molecules and the degradation followed pseudo-first-order kinetics.
Degradation Performance of 4-Chlorophenol as a Typical Organic Pollutant by a Pulsed High Voltage Discharge System

Abstract:Degradation of aqueous 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) with air bubbling was experimentally investigated in a multipoint-plate pulsed high voltage reactor. Several important parameters, including electrode distance, liquid conductivity, gas flow rate, and initial concentration, were investigated for 4-CP removal and energy efficiency. After discharge for 90 min, more than 95% of 4-CP was removed at the electrode distance of 1.5 cm, liquid conductivity of 1.06 mu S/cm, gas flow rate of 0.75 m(3)/h, and initial concentration of 60 ppm with specific energy density of 450 J/mL. The energy efficiency of 4-CP was about 2.15 x 10(-9) mol/J, and the mineralization of total organic carbon (TOC) reached to 55.8%. Hydrogen peroxide, ozone, nitrite, and nitrate were observed in the liquid phase. 4-chlorocatechol, hydroquinone, 5-chloro-3-nitropyrocatechol, chloride ion, formic, and acetic and oxalic acids were the main byproducts during 4-CP degradation. The degradation pathways were deduced including hydroxylation, N atom attack, and oxygen/ozone oxidation. A kinetic model was established to predict the degradation pathway, and the experimental data were fitted to the developed mathematical model well.
Radiolytic Degradation and Mechanism Study of Electron Beam-Irradiated Solutions of 4-Tert-octylphenol

Abstract:In this study, we have investigated the degradation and primary radiolytic degradation mechanism of 4-tert-octylphenol (4-t-OP) by using of electron beam (EB) -irradiation. The results show that at an absorbed dose of 10 kGy and an initial concentration of 25 mg.L-1, the degradation of 4-t-OP in a methanol/water reduction system is higher than in a acetonitrile/water oxidation system by 19.4% and higher than in an acetone/water system by 26.8%, which is due to both of center dot OH and e(aq)(-) playing an important role in the decomposition of 4-t-OP, although the latter is more effective. The degradation rate of 4-t-OP will decrease with increment of absorbed dose in a methanol/water solution, and increase with decrement of initial concentration at a constant absorbed dose. The degradation efficiency will also decrease with the addition of anions and H2O2 into the solution. A system saturated with N-2 will make an increment in the degradation of 4-t-OP. The pH value of solution has been also found to affect the degradation efficiency, while the degradation is more efficient in alkaline conditions. Finally, the initial products involved in degradation reaction have been determined to be ethylbenzene, styrene, bicyclo[4.2.0]octa-1,3,5-triene, 2,2,4-trimethylpentane and p-tert-butyl-phenol, which may arise from e(aq)(-) attack at the position of the alkyl side chain of 4-t-OP molecule. The results have been revealed that EB irradiation is a promising method for degradation of 4-t-OP, and e(aq)(-) may be main reactive species to attack at the position of the alkyl side chain of 4-t-OP.
Photodegradation of 4-Chloronitrobenzene in the Presence of Aqueous Titania Suspensions in Different Gas Atmospheres

Abstract:The photocatalytic degradation of 4-chloronitrobenzene (4-CNB) was carried out using Degussa P25 TiO2 as photocatalyst in three different gas atmospheres: nitrogen, oxygen, and ozone. The total organic carbon (TOC) and inorganic anions including chloride, nitrite, and nitrate anions were measured to monitor the mineralization processes, while the degradation of 4-CNB and the formation of intermediates were followed by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC/MS). Results showed that the photocatalytic efficiency followed the order of TiO2/UV/N2 < TiO2/UV/O2 < TiO2/UV/O3, which was further proved by evaluating the reaction activities using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spin trapping technique. Chlorine atom, nitro group and hydrogen atom of the benzene ring could be displaced by hydroxyl radical (•OH) leading to the formation of chloride, nitrite (III) anions and a variety of phenols, then the nitrite (III) anions were further oxidized to nitrate (V) anions. 4-Nitrophenol and 5-chloro-2-nitrophenol were identified and quantified in both of the TiO2/UV/N2 and TiO2/UV/O2 processes while no aromatic intermediates were monitored in the process of TiO2/UV/O3.
The cooperative electrochemical oxidation of chlorophenols in anode-cathode compartments

Abstract:By using a self-made carbon/polytetrafluoroethylene (C/PTFE) O2-fed as the cathode and Ti/IrO2/RuO2 as the anode, the degradation of three organic compounds (phenol, 4-chlorophenol, and 2,4-dichlorophenol) was investigated in the diaphragm (with terylene as diaphragm material) electrolysis device by electrochemical oxidation process. The result indicated that the concentration of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was 8.3 mg/L, and hydroxyl radical (HO) was determined in the cathodic compartment by electron spin resonance spectrum (ESR). The removal efficiency for organic compounds reached about 90% after 120 min, conforming to the sequence of phenol, 4-chlorophenol, and 2,4-dichlorophenol. And the dechlorination degree of 4-chlorophenol exceeded 90% after 80 min. For H2O2, HO existed in the catholyte and reduction dechlorination at the cathode, the mineralization of organics in the cathodic compartment was better than that in the anodic compartment. The degradation of organics was supposed to be cooperative oxidation by direct or indirect electrochemical oxidation at the anode and H2O2, HO produced by oxygen reduction at the cathode. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) allowed identifying phenol as the dechlorination product of 4-chlorophenol in the cathodic compartment, and hydroquinone, 4-chlorocatechol, benzoquinone, maleic, fumaric, oxalic, and formic acids as the main oxidation intermediates in the cathodic and anodic compartments. A reaction scheme involving all these intermediates was proposed.
Non-thermal Plasma-Induced Photocatalytic Degradation of 4-Chlorophenol in Water.

Abstract:TiO2 photocatalyst (P-25) (50mgL−1) was tentatively introduced into pulsed high-voltage discharge process for non-thermal plasma-induced photocatalytic degradation of the representative mode organic pollutant parachlorophenol (4-CP), including other compounds phenol and methyl red in water. The experimental results showed that rate constant of 4-CP degradation, energy efficiency for 4-CP removal and TOC removal with TiO2 were obviously increased. Pulsed high-voltage discharge process with TiO2 had a promoted effect for the degradation of these pollutants under a broad range of liquid conductivity. Furthermore, the apparent formation rates of chemically active species (e.g., ozone and hydrogen peroxide) were increased, the hydrogen peroxide formation rate from 1.10×10−6 to 1.50×10−6Ms−1, the ozone formation rate from 1.99×10−8 to 2.35×10−8Ms−1, respectively. In addition, this process had no influence on the photocatalytic properties of TiO2. The introduction of TiO2 photocatalyst into pulsed discharge plasma process in the utilizing of ultraviolet radiation and electric field in pulsed discharge plasma process enhanced the yields of chemically active species, which were available for highly efficient removal and mineralization of organic pollutants.
Electrochemical Degradation of 4-Chlorophenol Using a Novel Pd/C Gas-Diffusion Electrode

Abstract:Pd/C catalyst was prepared by hydrogen reduction method and used for the Pd/C gas-diffusion electrode. It was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) techniques. The electrochemical degradation of 4-chlorophenol was investigated in a diaphragm electrolysis device, by two different feeding gas modes, using the Pd/C gas-diffusion electrode and the carbon/polytetrafluoroethylene (C/PTFE) gas-diffusion electrode as a cathode, respectively. The results indicated that Pd particles with an average size of 4.0nm were highly dispersed in the activated carbon with an amorphous structure; Pd content on the surface of the Pd/C catalyst reached 1.3 at.%. Furthermore, feeding with hydrogen gas firstly and then with air was in favor of improving 4-chlorophenol removal efficiency. The Pd/C gas-diffusion cathode can not only reductively dechlorinate 4-chlorophenols by feeding hydrogen gas, but also accelerate the two-electron reduction of O2 to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) by feeding air. Therefore, the removal efficiency of 4-chlorophenol by using the Pd/C gas-diffusion cathode was better than that of the C/PTFE gas-diffusion cathode. And both the removal efficiency and the dechlorination degree of 4-chlorophenol reached about 100% after 60min, and the average removal efficiency of 4-chlorophenol in terms of chemical oxygen demand (COD) exceeded 70% after 120min. The analysis of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) identified that phenol was the dechlorination product, and hydroquinone, benzoquinone, maleic, fumaric, crylic, malonic, oxalic, acetic and formic acids were the main oxidation intermediates. A reaction pathway involving all these intermediates was proposed.

Abstract:Electrochemical oxidation of 4-chloro-3-methyl phenol (CMP) was examined using Ti/SnO(2)-Sb/PbO(2) anodes. The physicochemical properties of the electrodes were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrochemical measurements. The degradation was studied by monitoring the total organic carbon (TOC) removal of CMP, and variation of the concentration of intermediates by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), ion chromatography (IC) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The mineralization of CMP is confirmed to be controlled by mass transfer or by both chemical reaction and mass transfer. Hydroxyl radicals (OH) and active chlorine on the electrode surface had a dominant role in the electro-oxidation process. The chloride element in CMP was immediately driven away from parent substance by OH attack, and then accelerated the ring cleavage of methyl-p-benzoquinone, which was formed during the anodic oxidation of CMP. Ultimately, the chlorine of CMP was mainly transformed to hypochlorite and chloride ion in aqueous solution. Additionally, formic acid and acetic acid were relatively stable products that were not electro-oxidized efficiently in our experiments. The degradation pathway of CMP is proposed on the basis of these results.

Abstract:The characteristic and mechanism of parachlorophenol (4-CP) degradation in an internal electrolysis system were investigated. The degradation rate of 4-CP was higher in acid solution than that of in neutral or alkaline solution. Addition of activated carbon could make 4-CP easier be degraded by the surface contact catalysis. The dissolved oxygen in solution could take part in the electrode reaction and intensify the degradation of 4-CP. By the analysis of intermediates of degradation of 4-CP, it could be conferred that 4-CP was broken through the bond beside hydroxy firstly, then the bond beside chloride was broken and the chloride was dechlorinated simultaneously. Most intermediate products were glycerine, ethane diacid and acetic acid, while very few 1, 4-butanedial and alcohols were found.

Abstract:The combined application of TiO2 photocatalyst and pulsed high-voltage electrical discharge process for the degradation of organic pollutant parachlorophenol (4-CP) in aqueous solution was tentatively investigated. The optimum conditions for 4-CP removal were applied voltage at 14 kV, electrode distance at 2 cm, pH at 6.5 (close to neutral solution), TiO2 concentration at 50 mg/L, gas source O2 at 100 L/h, and hybrid corona-streamer discharge mode. Introduced TiO2 into pulsed discharge plasma process under such optimum condition, the rate constant of 4-CP degradation (k cp) was greatly promoted, from 1.56×10−3 to 2.81×10−3 s−1, and energy efficiency for 4-CP removal was greatly enhanced by approximately one time, and it was attributed to more amounts of chemically active species (e.g., ozone and hydrogen peroxide, especially hydroxyl radicals) produced in pulsed discharge plasma process in combination with TiO2 photocatalyst.
