Abstract:ABSTRACTCore‐sheath structured electrospun fibers with styrene‐butadiene‐styrene (SBS) block copolymer as a rubbery core and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) as a hard sheath were prepared by coaxial electrospinning, and used to improve the toughness of epoxy resin. The surface of the fibers was aminated by reacting PAN with diethylenetriamine to improve the interfacial interaction between the fibers and epoxy. Scanning and transmission electron microscopies confirm the core‐sheath structure of the PAN/SBS fibers. The Charpy impact energy is increased by the addition of electrospun fibers. When the content of aminated core‐sheath fibers is 4 wt %, the Charpy impact energy is increased by 150%. Dynamic mechanical analysis shows that the glass transition temperature of epoxy is not decreased by the addition of core‐sheath fibers. The high impact resistance is attributed to the rubbery core of the fibers that can absorb and dissipate impact energy, and the chemical bonding between the fibers and epoxy. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Mixed Hyperbranched Poly(aryl Ether Ketone) Results in High Toughness and Excellent Thermal Resistance in Epoxy Resin

Abstract:Epoxy resins are well used in many fields, but their problem of poor toughness restricts the further expansion of their applications. Facing this problem, this study successfully prepared high toughness epoxy resins using hydroxyl-terminated hyperbranched poly(aryl ether ketone) (HBPAEK-OH) as a toughening agent. Firstly, HBPAEK-OH was synthesized based on molecular structure design, combined with the optimized conditions of heat resistance and solubility. Then HBPAEK-OH was mixed with bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (DGEBA) to prepare a series of epoxy resins (HBP/DGEBA-n) with superior thermal properties, whose glass transition temperature (Tg) can reach 113.9 degrees C, which is about 38 degrees C higher than that of HBP/DGEBA-0. The tensile strength, flexural strength, impact strength, and elongation at break of HBP/DGEBA-n showed a tendency to increase and then decrease with the increase of HBPAEK-OH content, and the highest values reached 86.43 MPa, 128.50 MPa, 57.03 kJ/m2, and 7.15 %, respectively. Among them, the impact strength and elongation at break increased by 179.3 % and 87.2 %, indicating that the toughness of HBP/DGEBA-n was significantly improved. This study explores a new method for toughening epoxy resins, which improves their toughness and heat-resistant properties and provides new possibilities for their expansion in different applications.

Abstract:In this study, a novel hyperbranched benzoxazine (HB-PED230) was synthesized from the reaction of Jeffamine D230, 1,1,1-tris(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethane and paraformaldehyde through the simple one-step Mannich condensation reaction. The characteristic structure of oxazine ring in HB-PED230 was confirmed by FTIR, 1H and 13C NMR and the corresponding degree of branching (DB) was calculated to be 0.51. The effects of HB-PED230 on the copolymerization behavior, thermal stability and mechanical properties of epoxy resin were studied. Compared with the neat epoxy resin, the flexural modulus of modified thermosets decreased obviously by increasing the amount of HB-PED230, indicating that the HB-PED230 had plasticization effect on epoxy resin and reduced its brittleness. Simultaneously, the flexural strength of copolymer was enhanced. More importantly, the impact strength of modified thermoset with the incorporation of 12 wt% HB-PED230 was improved by 247.4%, implying the great improvement of toughness for epoxy resin. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) imagines showed that no phase separation appeared in the thermosets, also revealing the evidence of increased toughness after addition of HB-PED230.

Abstract:To improve the low-temperature toughness of epoxy resins, in this study, an epoxy-terminated hyperbranched polysiloxane (EPTS-12) was synthesized and introduced into the epoxy resin as a toughener. The structure of EPTS-12 was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR), and the fractured surfaces of the modified resins were observed by a scanning electron microscope (SEM). With the content of EPTS-12 at 5 wt%, under room temperature (RT) and − 72 °C, the maximum values of elongation at break were 14.19% and 16.06%, increasing by 35.66% and 74.19% respectively. The test results of dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) also showed that the toughness of the modified epoxy resins was improved. The SEM images of the fractured surfaces of the modified resins were used to investigate the toughening mechanism of the toughener (EPTS-12). With the virtue of a simple synthesis process, low cost, and good reproducibility, this toughener can further expand the application of epoxy resins.

Abstract:The strength and toughness of thermoset epoxy resins are generally mutually exclusive, as are the high performance and rapid recyclability. Experimentally determined mechanical strength values are usually much lower than their theoretical values. The preparation of thermoset epoxy resins with high modulus, high toughness, ultrastrong strength, and highly efficient recyclability is still a challenge. Here, novel hyperbranched epoxy resins (Bn, n = 6, 12, 24) with imide structures by a thiol-ene click reaction. Bn shows an excellent comprehensive function in simultaneously improving the strength, modulus, toughness, low-temperature resistance, and degradability of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA). All the mechanical properties first increase and then decrease with minimization of the free volume properties. The improvement is attributable to uniform molecular holes or free volume by a molecular mixture of linear and hyperbranched topological structures. The precise measurement and controllability of the molecular free volume properties of epoxy resins is first discovered, as well as the imide structure degradation of crosslinked epoxy resins. The two conflicts are successfully resolved between strength and toughness and between high performance during service and high efficiency during degradation. These findings provide a route for designing ultrastrong, tough, and recyclable thermoset epoxy resins. This work demonstrates the preparation of high-performance epoxy thermosets from hyperbranched epoxy, overcoming the two conflicts between strength and toughness and between high performance and highly efficient degradation. The in-situ simultaneous reinforcing and toughening mechanism is well investigated, being attributed to a synergistic effect of high crosslinking density, minimization of free volume, narrow free volume distribution, and hyperbranched structure.image

Abstract:Hyperbranched polymers (HBPs) have received much attention for years due to their unique chemical and physical properties. In this review, the advancement in controlling the HBPs chemistry and the applications of HBPs in such thermoset resins as epoxy, bismaleimide, vinylester-urethane hybrid were summarized. HBPs can improve the toughness of the cured resins with little decrease on glass transition temperature or Young's module, which make HBPs have the most promising application in the thermoset resins. Currently, the use of HBPs in thermoset resins is not industrialized, therefore, there is a greater need for further study in addition to understand the exact toughening mechanism of HBPs. In this paper, the popular toughening mechanisms of HBPs in the thermoset resins were reviewed, and the future works of HBPs as modifiers for the thermoset resins were anticipated.

Abstract:The synthesis and characterization of a new type of hyperbranched polyester with a flexible ethoxylated Bisphenol-A structure and terminal hydroxyl groups is reported. The influence of the hyperbranched polyester on the curing and thermomechanical properties of both unfilled and silica filled epoxy-novolac systems was studied. The curing behavior was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and rheolometry. The addition of the hyperbranched polyester to the formulation reduced the contraction on curing of both unfilled and filled systems, while Tg of the cured samples dropped down with the increase of polyester content due to the flexible backbone structure of the modifier. SEM microscopy on the fractured surface of cured samples revealed a homogeneous morphology and a possible effect of polyester as a toughness enhancer.
High-Impact Epoxy Resins with Superior Hydrophobicity Toughened by Epoxy Functionalized Poly(olefin-alt-maleimide) Derivatives

Abstract:The inherent disadvantages of low toughness and high brittleness severely limit the widespread applications of epoxy resins (EPs), and it is highly desirable to toughen EPs while maintaining their rigidity and thermal properties. Herein, a type of epoxy functionalized poly[1-hexene-alt-N-(2-methoxymethyl oxirane)maleimide] (PHMIEP) was specially designed and synthesized by the self-stabilized precipitation polymerization (2SP) of 1-hexene and maleic anhydride, followed by imidization, hydroxymethylation, and epoxidation. Due to the presence of both rigid cyclic maleimide units and flexible pendant butyl groups, epoxy functionalized PHMIEP can serve as an effective toughening modifier for EPs. With 4,4-diaminodiphenylmethane as the curing agent, the EPs with 5 phr PHMIEP showed a record-high impact strength and tensile strength of 54.04 kJ/m2 and 95.84 MPa, which were 121 and 23% higher than the neat EPs, respectively. Moreover, the PHMIEP-modified EPs exhibited similar thermal stability and glass-transition temperature to those of the neat EPs. More impressively, the resultant EPs showed superior hydrophobicity in comparison to the unmodified EPs due to the incorporation of hydrophobic imide and alkyl segments. Furthermore, in order to reduce the preparation cost, complex olefinic mixtures derived from the cracking product of raffinate oil were used directly to replace 1-hexene. The EPs modified with poly[cracked raffinate oil-alt-N-(2-methoxymethyl oxirane)maleimide] (PRMIEP) also showed excellent comprehensive properties. Due to the highly enhanced toughness, higher strength, and comparable thermal stability, the PHMIEP/PRMIEP-toughened EPs demonstrate great potential as a high-performance resin matrix for application in the fields of electronic packaging, coating, and engineering plastics.
Facile synthesis of hyperbranched epoxy resin for combined flame retarding and toughening modification of epoxy thermosets

Abstract:Concurrently enhancing the flame retardancy and toughness without sacrificing strength, thermal decomposition temperature, and glass transition temperature ( T g ) of epoxy thermosets is still challenging. Herein, a new phosphorus/nitrogen-containing hyperbranched epoxy resin (HPITT) was synthesized from itaconic anhydride, 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide, piperazine, and triglycidyl isocyanurate by a facile method. The HPITT was then utilized for synergistic flame retarding and toughening modification of epoxy thermosets. Upon the introduction of 10 wt% HPITT, the epoxy thermosets reached a limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 31.5 % and UL-94 V-0 rating. Meanwhile, the peak heat release rate (PHRR) and total smoke production (TSP) decreased by 32.3 % and 27.7 % when compared to neat epoxy thermosets, respectively. Moreover, the synergistic flame retarding functions of phosphaphenanthrene, piperazine and isocyanurate segments in HPITT were demonstrated by combined gas and char phase residue analyses. Compared to neat epoxy, features such as the impact strength, tension strength, and flexural strength of the modified epoxy thermosets increased by respectively 53.9 %, 29.2 %, and 58 % owing to intramolecular cavities, rigid segments, and high crosslinking density supplied by HPITT. Moreover, the modified epoxy thermosets still maintained excellent T g and thermal decomposition temperature. In sum, an attractive strategy for concurrently enhancing flame retardancy and toughness of epoxy thermosets was proposed, useful for future advanced applications in adhesives, coatings, and composite materials.

Abstract:Polyurethane is widely used to toughen epoxy resins due to its excellent comprehensive properties and compatibility. However, some demerits of polyurethanes limit their applications, such as the harsh storage condition of isocyanate-terminated polyurethane (ITPU), the limited amount of ITPU in epoxy resin, and using solvents during the preparation of polyurethane-modified epoxy resins. To address these issues, in this study, we reported a facile and green approach for preparing epoxy-terminated polyurethane (EPU)-modified epoxy resins with different EPU contents. It was found that the toughness of the epoxy resin was significantly improved after the addition of EPU. When the EPU content was 30 wt%, the elongation at break and toughness were improved by 358.36% and 73.56%, respectively. In comparison, the toughening effect of EPU outperformed that of ITPU. Moreover, the high content of EPU did not significantly decrease the glass transition temperature and had little effect on the thermal stability of the epoxy resin.
Diphenolic Acid-Derived Hyperbranched Epoxy Thermosets with High Mechanical Strength and Toughness

Abstract:Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) is a kind of widely used epoxy resin, but its thermosets normally show high brittleness and poor impact resistance due to the intrinsic rigid aromatic rings, which limit its application greatly. To avoid this drawback, we proposed a method to prepare a series of hyperbranched epoxies (HBEPs) with different molecular weights. After HBEPs were cured with methyl tetrahydrophthalic anhydride (MTHPA), characterizations were carried out to evaluate the properties of the cured HBEP samples. Testing results indicate that the hyperbranched thermosets can achieve excellent mechanical strength and toughness (tensile strength: 89.2 MPa, bending strength: 129.6 MPa, elongation at break: 6.1%, toughness: 4.5 MJ m-3, and impact strength: 6.7 kJ m-2), which are superior to those of the thermosets of commercial DGEBA (tensile strength: 81.2 MPa, bending strength: 108.2 MPa, elongation at break: 3.0%, toughness: 1.5 MJ m-3, and impact strength: 4.2 kJ m-2). In addition, HBEP with the highest molecular weight and degree of branching shows the best comprehensive mechanical properties. All hyperbranched thermosets exhibit high glass-transition temperatures (T g) and thermostability, which further illustrates the potential application value of HBEPs.

Abstract:Hyperbranched polymer(HBP) was one of the most promising materials for modification of thermoset resins.HBP was synthesized with trimethylolpropane(TMP) and dimethylol propionic acid(DMPA) as the reagents by a one-pot synthesis procedure.The effect of HBP content on the mechanical performance of the bisphenol-A epoxy was investigated,and the thermal property of the cured resin was also studied by employing differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) and thermal gravimetric analysis(TGA).The results indicated that both the impact strength and the bending strength were enhanced to 153% and 19.3% respectively,with HBP loadings of 15%.The thermal property of the HBP modified epoxy was also increased to some extent.It proved that HBP was a potential modifier for epoxy resin.

Abstract:In this work, a novel hyperbranched poly (urethane-phosphine oxide) (HPUPO) was facilely synthesized from 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate and trihydroxymethylphosphine oxide at room temperature. When HPUPO was incorporated, flame retardancy and toughness of epoxy resin are improved with maintained Tg and increased modulus and strength. The gas and condensed phase flame retardant mechanisms and toughening mechanisms are provided. The poor compatibility of epoxy resin/HPUPO hybrids determines the unchanged Tg of epoxy matrix phase. The tensile modulus and strength and storage modulus of modified epoxy thermosets are raised due to more rigid skeleton of HPUPO and hydrogen bond interaction. Moreover, the reactivity of epoxy resin curing systems containing HPUPO is elevated for the catalytic effect of its hydroxyl. The surface hydrophilicity of epoxy resin composites is decreased resulting from their increased surface roughness and the hydrophobicity of HPUPO. And the thermal decomposition temperature of epoxy resin hybrids is depressed. The epoxy resins modified by HPUPO with simple synthesis and preparation can be used for various high-performance applications in industries.

Abstract:Aiming at the problem of phase separation between thermoplastic toughener and epoxy after curing, which leads to the reduction of mechanical properties, in this paper we improve the compatibility of the two phases by introducing reactive groups into the molecular chain of thermoplastic resins, thus improving the impact strength of the epoxy system. Phenolphthalein polyether sulfone (C‐PESC) with designable and controllable carboxyl group content was prepared via SN2 nucleophilic substitution copolymerization. Further C‐PESC was evaluated for epoxy toughening, and the effects of carboxyl group content of C‐PESC on mechanical properties and thermal stability of the resin system were investigated. The results show that C‐PESC resin has good compatibility with E51 epoxy resin. Carboxyl group accelerates the dissolution rate of thermoplastic resins in epoxy and also participates in the curing reaction with epoxy to enhance the interfacial bonding ability between the toughening component and the matrix resin. The reactive toughener C‐PESC can not only improve the impact properties of E51 epoxy, but also maintain the high Tg and thermal properties of the resin system. Among them, the addition of 5 PHR of C‐PESC3 increased the impact strength of the modified resin by 45%, with uniform fracture surface and tough fracture shape.

Abstract:In order to reveal the effect of curing reaction and such physical state as gelation and vitrification on the microstructure and the resulting thermo-mechanical properties, a series of epoxidized hyperbranched polyurethane (EHPU) modified benzoxazine resin (BZ) blends (BE) were fabricated. The curing reaction between BZ and EHPU was investigated by nonisothermal DSC, FTIR and isothermal rheology. The self-polymerization or the copolymerization of BZ and EHPU was successfully realized via tuning its curing cycle at different curing temperature. The ether cross-link was realized from the copolymerization between oxazine ring and epoxy groups, which can dilute the rich benzene ring of BZ and weaken the hydrogen bonding of pure BZ. As for BE with 10 wt% of EHPU, both a high cross-link density and an excellent thermomechanical property can be obtained with the curing cycle of entering the vitrification state in the initial stage and then transferring it into the post-curing. As thus, the study provides a novel strategy in fabricating a dense network via tuning the curing reaction and physical state.

Abstract:Multifunctional epoxy resins are inherently brittle due to the extremely high cross‐linking density, thus the enhancement in the toughness is rather important for the industrial application. In this work, a reactive poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate)‐b‐poly(propylene glycol)‐b‐poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA‐PPG‐PHEMA) is synthesized by using an atom transfer radical polymerization to toughen trifunctional diglycidyl 4,5‐epoxy cyclohexane‐1,2‐dicarboxylate (TDE‐85). A controllable system is constructed, in which the reaction temperature of TDE‐85 with the hydroxyl of PHEMA‐PPG‐PHEMA is lower than with the curing agent. As a result, both heterogeneous and homogeneous structures can be formed in composites through controlling reaction temperature. It is found that the toughness of composites with the heterogeneous structure is effectively improved without sacrificing the tensile strength, tensile modulus, and glass transition temperature. Specifically, the mode‐1 critical stress intensity factor and critical strain energy release rate of TDE‐85/10 wt% PHEMA‐PPG‐PHEMA are increased to 0.77 MPam1/2 and 146 J/m2, respectively, which are effectively enhanced by 32.8% and 70.3%. This can be ascribed to combined toughening effects from the cavitation of the PHEMA‐PPG‐PHEMA phase, the matrix shear yielding, and the enhanced interface bonding strength due to the reaction between TDE‐85 and PHEMA‐PPG‐PHEMA. Thus, this study paves a novel strategy to improve the toughness of epoxy resin by controlling the curing reaction.

However, certain inherent limitations severely impede further applications of these advanced materials, such as poor fatigue resistance, low impact resistance, hard to recycle, and a “seesaw” between toughness and strength. Here, we especially focused on the recent progress in toughening methods and associated mechanisms for these epoxy resins and analytic techniques for characterizing toughness, which highlighted the applicable approaches to generate homogeneous structures. As a typical homogeneous toughness material, hyperbranched polymers, especially hyperbranched epoxy resins (HERs), are ideal candidates to solve the knotty problem of EPs because HERs can homogeneously reinforce and toughen diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA), promoting the degradation of DGEBA, as well exhibiting strong interfacial interactions among components, due to their excellent compatibility, wettability and low viscosity. Last but not least, we advance the objectives and challenges of epoxy resins in the future. Overall, this review presents an up-to-date overview of toughening methods and mechanisms for EPs, and guidance of emerging research on the sustainable development of EPs in versatile high-tech fields.

The effect of amino-terminated hyperbranched polymers on the impact resistance of epoxy resins

Abstract:A novel amino-terminated hyperbranched polymer (ATHBP) was synthesized through the end-capping reaction between hyperbranched polymer with hydroxyl group (HBPH) and diethylenetriamine. The chemical structure of ATHBP was characterized by attenuated total internal reflectance infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR) and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR). The effect of ATHBP content (0–30 wt%) on the impact resistance and glass transition temperature (Tg) of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A epoxy resin was studied. The toughness mechanism was discussed by observing the fracture surface morphologies of epoxy thermosets using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The results showed that the degree of branching of ATHBP was 0.56. And the introduction of ATHBP could favorably improve the impact strength but not sacrifice the Tg of epoxy resin. For example, the impact strength of 25 wt% formulation was 60.7 % higher than that of the neat epoxy thermoset. FESEM analysis indicated that the toughening mechanism may be attributed to plastic deformation mechanism.

Abstract:Novel epoxide-terminated hyperbranched polyurethanes (EHPU) with different epoxy values were prepared through functionalization of hyperbranched polyurethane with glycidol. Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance analyses were conducted and confirmed the successfully synthesis of EHPU. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements were carried out for thermal and kinetic studies of EHPU and benzoxazine (BZ) hybrid. Specifically, through kinetic study using advanced isoconversional method, it was found that EHPU can catalyze the polymerization of BZ oligomers when degree of curing is below 0.7 with the apparent activation energy dropped 8.3 kJ/mol. Whereas, the epoxide groups of EHPU can join the curing reaction of BZ at 180 °C, which was further confirmed by FTIR analysis.
Simultaneously improving the flame retardancy and toughness of epoxy composites with hyperbranched phosphorus-containing polysiloxane functionalized halloysite nanotubes

Abstract:Development of high-performance thermosets with simultaneously improved flame retardancy, toughness and strength but unaffected glass transition temperature (Tg) has been a great challenge. In this work, hyperbranched phosphorus-containing polysiloxane functionalized halloysite nanotubes (HBPPSi-HNTs) were synthesized to prepare flame-retarding, mechanically-strong and tough epoxy composites. The tensile and impact strengths of the composites with 5.0phr HBPPSi-HNTs were improved by 23.7 % and 48.8 % respectively compared with the neat epoxy resin. The epoxy composites also exhibited excellent flame-retardancy due to the instantaneous gas-phase and condensed-phase flame retardant behavior of HBPPSi-HNTs. The composite with 10.0phr HBPPSi-HNTs passed UL-94V-0 rating, with an LOI value as high as 42.6 %. And compared with neat epoxy resin, the peak of heat release rate (PHRR), total heat release (THR), total smoke production (TSP) and CO generated per second (COY) were reduced by 50.1 %, 32.6 %, 30.1 % and 39.5 %, respectively. This work presented a general approach to prepare epoxy composites with simultaneously improved flame retardancy and mechanical properties without sacrificing the glass transition temperature.
