Abstract:AbstractIt is highly desirable to develop electroactive organic materials and their derivatives as green alternatives of cathodes for sustainable and cost‐effective lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) in energy storage fields. Herein, compact two‐dimensional coupled graphene and porous polyaryltriazine‐derived frameworks with tailormade pore structures are fabricated by using various molecular building blocks under ionothermal conditions. The porous nanosheets display nanoscale thickness, high specific surface area, and strong coupling of electroactive polyaryltriazine‐derived frameworks with graphene. All these features make it possible to efficiently depress the dissolution of redox moieties in electrolytes and to boost the electrical conductivity of whole electrode. When employed as a cathode in LIBs, the two‐dimensional porous nanosheets exhibit outstanding cycle stability of 395 mAh g−1 at 5 A g−1 for more than 5100 cycles and excellent rate capability of 135 mAh g−1 at a high current density of 15 A g−1.

Abstract:The electrode materials with hollow structure and/or graphene coating are expected to exhibit outstanding electrochemical performances in energy-storage systems. 2D graphene-wrapped hollow C/Fe3 O4 microspheres are rationally designed and fabricated by a novel facile and scalable strategy. The core@double-shell structure SPS@FeOOH@GO (SPS: sulfonated polystyrene, GO: graphene oxide) microspheres are first prepared through a simple one-pot approach and then transformed into C/Fe3 O4 @G (G: graphene) after calcination at 500 °C in Ar. During calcination, the Kirkendall effect resulting from the diffusion/reaction of SPS-derived carbon and FeOOH leads to the formation of hollow structure carbon with Fe3 O4 nanoparticles embedded in it. In the rationally constructed architecture of C/Fe3 O4 @G, the strongly coupled C/Fe3 O4 hollow microspheres are further anchored onto 2D graphene networks, achieving a strong synergetic effect between carbon, Fe3 O4 , and graphene. As an anode material of Li-ion batteries (LIBs), C/Fe3 O4 @G manifests a high reversible capacity, excellent rate behavior, and outstanding long-term cycling performance (1208 mAh g(-1) after 200 cycles at 100 mA g(-1) ).

Abstract:Organic carbonyl compounds have been widely investigated as a promising candidate for graphite anodes in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of their high capacity, low cost, and diverse structure. Here, a multicarbonyl polyimide derivative bearing an anhydride with benzoquinone was designed and synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. Integrating flexible structural design with careful regulation of polymerization conditions, the polyimide derivative exhibits an unprecedented three-dimensional microsphere-like superstructure constructed by interconnected two-dimensional nanosheets, which is beneficial to trigger interfacial energy storage and improve storage capacity. When explored as an anode material for LIBs, the polyimide derivative delivers an outstanding reversible capacity (992 mAh/g at 100 mA/g), good rate capability (268 mAh/g at 2 A/g), and excellent cycle stability (465 mAh/g after 150 cycles at 0.5 A/g). Based on density functional theory calculations and experimental results, a 24 Li-storage mechanism with a five-step lithiation/delithiation process is proposed.

Abstract:Organic cathode materials have owned wide range of research interests for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) owing to their higher theoretical storage capacities, safety advantage, desirable fabrication at molecular level and significant sustainability. However, the dissolution of active materials into electrolyte results in short cycle life and low rate capacity which are inevitable obstacles to the industrialization. The organic species in carbon materials like active carbon, carbon nanotubes and graphene, cannot be stabilized in electrolytes due to their weak interactions. Here, we report a novel organic cathode design to fabricate long-cycle life LIBs. The organic cathode relies on the ionic interactions between positively charged N, N'-bis(2-N, N-dimethylaminoethyl)-3,4,9,10-perylenebis(dicarboximides) (PDI) and negatively charged graphene oxide (GO). In this design, the carbon matrices can load significant amount of organic molecules and can develop the interactions with electrolytes for a long time. The exclusive design can assemble the organic PDI LIBs with reversible capacity higher than 81 mA h g(-1) with excellent cyclability at 25 mA g(-1). Moreover, the reversible capacity is sustained up to 28.4mA h g(-1) at a higher current rate 500mA h g(-1). The current investigations confirmed that the proposed strategy can be effective for hundreds of organic materials which have been ignored in past owing to their poor cyclability, and now these can be reinvestigated under the consideration of ionic interactions. Abstract:Despite the fascinating Li storage properties of organic carbonyl compounds, e.g., high therotical capacity and fast kinetics, it is still lack of a facile and effective way that capable of large‐scale producion of advanced carbonyl cathodes for Li‐ion batteries (LIBs). Here, a generic strategy is proposed by combining sonication and hydrothermal techniques for scalable synthesis of high performance organic carbonyl cathodes for LIBs. A series of commercialized vat dyes with abundant electroactive conjugated carbonyl groups are confined in between the graphene layers, forming a compatible 3D hybrid architecture. The unique structure affords good Li+ ions accessibility to the electrode and short Li+ ions diffusion length. Meanwhile, each sandwiched graphene layer functions as a miniature current collector, ensuring fast electron transport throughout the entire electrode. Consequently, the cathodic performances of LIBs using the composites as electrodes, for example, Vat Green 8/graphene, Vat Brown BR/graphene, and Vat Olive T/graphene, possess high specific capacity, exceptional cycling stability, and excellent rate capability. The effect of vat dye content on the morphology, structure, and the final electrochemical performance of the composites is investigated as well. This work provides a versatile and low‐cost platform for large‐scale development of advanced organic‐based electrodes toward sustainable energy fields.
High-performance lithium-ion batteries based on polymer/graphene hybrid cathode material

Abstract:Organic and carbon-based lithium-ion batteries possess abundant resources, nontoxicity, environmental friendliness, and high performance, and they have been widely studied in the past decades. However, it remains a challenge to construct such batteries with high capacity, high cycling stability, and high conductivity simultaneously. Here, we elaborately design and integrate organic polymer (p-FcPZ) with graphene network to create a hybrid material (p-FcPZ@G) for high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The bi-polar polymer p-FcPZ containing multiple redox-active sites endows p-FcPZ@G with both remarkable cycling stability and high capacity. The porous conductive graphene network with a large surface area facilitates rapid ions/electrons transportation, resulting in superior rate performance. Therefore, the half-cell based on p-FcPZ@G cathode exhibits simultaneously high capacity (∼250 mA h g −1 at 50 mA g −1 ), excellent cycling stability (retention of 99.999% per cycle for 10,000 cycles at 2,000 mA g −1 ) and superior rate performance. Additionally, the graphene-based full cell assembled with p-FcPZ@G cathode and graphene anode also demonstrates comprehensively high electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Electroactive acid anhydride with multicarbonyl is highly promising for electrochemical energy storage because of its high specific capacity and environmental benignity. Its low electrical conductivity and high dissolution in organic electrolyte, however, result in poor cycling and rate capabilities. Here, we report a naphthalene polyimide derivative (NPI) synthesized by using anhydride under condensation polymerization conditions, along with its composite with graphene (NPI-G) fabricated via in situ polymerization. The composite delivers a high reversible capacity and outstanding cycling stability and rate capability as a cathode for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) owing to the formation of a polymer, the improvement in the electrical conductivity brought about by the highly dispersed graphene sheets, and the enhancement of structural stability resulting from the π-π stacking interaction between the phenyl groups of NPI and the six-member carbon rings of graphene. This investigation sheds light on the development, design, and screening of next-generation organic electrode materials with high performance for SIBs.

Abstract:Aromatic polyimides have been considered promising organic cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their excellent solvent resistance, superior electrochemical capability and highly designable structure. However, the inferior intrinsic conductivity and limited redox-active sites lead to their suboptimal comprehensive electrochemical performance and restrict their applications in LIBs. Herein, a novel conjugated diketone-based polyimide (PTN) cathode material with multiple carbonyl redox sites is proposed and prepared for LIBs. The integration of electron-withdrawing pi-conjugated diketone with naphthimide can effectively regulate the electronic structure and elevate the working potential of the polyimide-based cathode, and improve its comprehensive electrochemical performance. The PTN-based cathode delivers a high specific capacity of 213.4 mAh g(-1), excellent cycling stability (97.3% capacity retention after 2000 cycles at 2000 mA g(-1)) and high rate performance (78.2% capacity retention at 2000 mA g(-1) vs. 50 mA g(-1)), high gravimetric energy density (380 Wh kg(-1)) at a high power density (4417 W kg(-1)) simultaneously. This comprehensive electrochemical performance is among the best results of reported polyimide cathode materials and suggests that PTN has great potential in energy storage applications.
A Graphene-Wrapped Silver–porous Silicon Composite with Enhanced Electrochemical Performance for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:A graphene-wrapped silver-porous silicon composite has been prepared and used as the anode material in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Porous silicon (pSi) prepared through a magnesiothermic reduction of mesoporous silica MCM-41 was surface-modified by Ag nanoparticles formed via the thermal decomposition of AgNO3 and then graphene nanosheets (GNS) generated through the thermal reduction of graphene oxide. The obtained Ag-pSi/GNS composite exhibits a distinctly high reversible specific capacity, long cycling performance and super rate capability. An initial capacity as high as 3531 mA h g(-1) is delivered at 0.1 A g(-1), whereas at a current density of 32 A g(-1), a specific capacity of 1241 mA h g(-1), more than three times higher than the theoretical capacity of the graphite anode, is still retained for 50 cycles. The superior electrochemical performance demonstrates that this Ag-pSi/GNS composite is a promising electrode material for high-performance LIBs.

Abstract:Organic electrode materials have promising application prospects in energy storage, but issues including rapid capacity fading and poor power capacity restrict their practical applications. Herein, nanoporous fluorinated covalent quinazoline networks (F-CQNs) were constructed by condensation of fluorinated aromatic aminonitrile precursors via an ionothermal pathway. Precise control of the reaction parameters afforded F-CQN-1-600 material featuring high surface area, permanent porosity, high nitrogen content (23.49 wt %), extended π-conjugated architecture, layered structure, and bipolar combination of benzene and tricycloquinazoline. Abstract:The development of environment-friendly electrode materials is highly desired for the clean and sustainable Li-ion batteries (LIBs) system. Organic cathode materials that involve conducting polymers, organic carbonyl/sulfur compounds are expected to be promising candidates for future LIBs with a concept of “green and sustainable”. However, their battery performances are relatively worse than that of inorganic counterparts due to their low electronic conductivity and unwanted dissolution reactions occurring in electrolytes. Aimed to alter their performances, we herein focuses on the preparation of upgraded organic materials by chemical engineering of graphene oxide (GO) and the systematic study of their electrochemical performance as positive electrodes for LIBs. The obtained decarboxylated GO and carbonylated/hydroxylated GO electrodes show significantly enhanced electrochemical performance compared with that of the GO electrode. Our results demonstrate that the manipulation of oxygen functional groups on GO is an effective strategy to greatly improve the Li storage property of GO-based materials for advanced LIBs cathodes.

Abstract:Currently, organic electrode materials have shown promising prospects in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the practical application of organic electrode materials is severely hindered by the intrinsic low electrical conductivity and poor cycle stability. Herein, we present a novel polyimide (NBI-PI) which contains extended π-conjugated naphthalene ring and Schiff-base structure as an anode material. The NBI-PI has abundant active sites and crystallized nature. The organic anode based on NBI-PI for LIBs exhibit good reversible capacity of 627.8 mA h g−1 at 0.25 A g−1 after 200 cycles, and display reasonable rate performance of 217 mA h g−1 at 2 A g−1. When the batteries are cycled at 2 A g−1, capacity retention of 85.7% is attained after 1600 electrochemical cycles. This work demonstrates a facile and practical strategy to develop high-performance organic anode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:As a new class of materials, graphene-based materials exhibit unique properties such as high surface area, lightweight, good electrical conductivity, compatibility with other materials, and controlled pore size distribution. A combination of extraordinary electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties makes graphene sheets not only attractive as atom-thick components in nanoelectronic devices, but also excellent molecular building blocks for assembling new macroscopic materials, ideal for energy storage devices. We are committed to develop high throughput material processing for high quality graphene sheets and create assembly of graphene based composite materials. These materials will act as active components in electrical energy storage, such as supercapacitors and batteries. We have designed a simple method by combining GO reduction and Sn oxidation in one step by using just GO and SnCl2 as reagents to yield SnO2-nanocrystal/graphene-nanosheets composites. The electrochemical experiments showed that the cycle performance of composites was greatly enhanced and might pave a way to commercialize the composites electrode because of the simplicity. We also designed a facile and reliable method for the synthesis of LiFePO4 (LFP) nanoparticles loaded on graphene with sucrose as a linker. These graphene composites could significantly facilitate the liquid electrolyte to pass through their surface, so that more surface sites would be accessible for lithium ions. The electrochemical experiments showed that the composites almost deliver approaching theoretical capacity and good cycling performance.
Design of Linear-Polymer-Coated Graphene Nanosheets with π-Conjugated Structure and Multi-Active-Center for Long-Lifespan and High-Rate Li-Storage Performance

Abstract:Organic material holds immense potential for Li-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their eco-friendly nature, high structural designability, abundant sources, and high theoretical capacity. However, the limited redox-active sites, low electronic conductivity, sluggish ionic diffusion, and high solubility hinder their practical application. Here, we reported the use of a linear polymer called poly(naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride-pyrene-4,5,9,10-tetraone)-coated graphene nanosheets (NPT/rGO) as a cathode material for LIBs. The NPT polymer has a rotation angle of approximately 63° between each plane, which helps in exposing the active sites and preventing structural pulverization during cycling. The highly conjugated skeleton of the polymer, along with graphene, forms a synergistic effect through a π-π interaction. This combination enhances the conductivity and restricts solubility. Additionally, the linear structure of NPT and the two-dimensional rGO substrates work together to enhance charge transfer and ion diffusion rates, resulting in faster reaction kinetics. Consequently, NPT/rGO exhibits excellent electrochemical performance in terms of high capacity, superior cyclic stability, and good rate capability for LIBs. Moreover, through the combination of experimental investigations and theoretical simulations, a multiple electron reaction mechanism, an efficient Li-ion storage behavior, and a reversible dynamic evolution have been revealed. This study introduces a rational molecular design approach to enhance the electrochemical performance of polyimide derivatives, thereby contributing to the advancement of cutting-edge organic electrode materials for LIBs.

Abstract:Organic electrode materials show promise for application in rechargeable batteries due to their potential for high capacity, tunable structures, flexibility, and sustainability. However, the serious dissolution problem in organic electrolytes and the inferior intrinsic conductivity of organic electrode materials limit their performance and practical applications in LIBs. Herein, a novel carbonyl-enriched polymer (PDABQ) was designed and synthesized from tetraaminobenzoquinone (TABQ) and chloranil (TCBQ). The integration of low molecular weight −NH– with quinone units can effectively improve the theoretical specific capacity and extend the conjugated structure. Meanwhile, the hydrogen bonds between CO and −NH– and intermolecular π–π interactions further enhance the solvent resistance and the charge transfer rate of the PDABQ cathode. Therefore, the PDABQ cathode shows long-term cycling stability (88.8% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 2 A g–1), high reversible specific capacity (234.2 mA h g–1 at 0.1 A g–1), and outstanding rate performance (161.2 mA h g–1 at 2 A g–1, 75.9% capacity retention versus 0.1 A g–1). This work offers an effective and convenient molecular structure design strategy for high-performance organic carbonyl polymer cathode materials.

Covalent Organic Framework@graphene Composite As a High-Performance Electrode for Li-ion Batteries

Abstract:As emerging candidates for the electrode materials of next-generation rechargeable batteries, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have large charge capacity, wide ion diffusion paths and low potential range. However, organic electrodes generally suffer from low conductivity. Graphene (G) possesses great strength, flexibility and has been widely used as a type of conductive additive due to its remarkable electrical conductivity. Here we propose a composite constructed by a certain kind of COF and a pristine G sheet (COF@G), the characteristics of which have been systematically investigated based on density functional theory calculations and molecular dynamics simulations. Results indicate that the COF@G (COF/G, COF/COF/G, COF/G/G) can exhibit good electronic conductivity and ultrahigh capability, which can be used as high-performance electrodes of Li-ion batteries. For Li-ions (Li+), they can provide strong adsorption sites and smooth diffusion channels leading to high specific capacity and good rate capability. More importantly, the coupling interaction of the COF and the G can greatly inhibit the structure changes of the COF during the lithiation process, and the volumetric change rate is less than 23%. Among them, the COF/G is the most suitable for Li+ adsorption and corresponding theoretical capacity can reach 353 mAh/g.

Abstract:A facile strategy to synthesize the novel composite paper of graphene nanosheets (GNS) coated Co3O4 fibers is reported as an advanced anode material for high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The GNS were able to deposit onto Co3O4 fibers and form the coating via electrostatic interactions. The unique hybrid paper is evaluated as an anode electrode for LIBs, and it exhibits a very large reversible capacity (similar to 840 mA h g(-1) after 40 cycles), excellent cyclic stability and good rate capacity. The substantially excellent electrochemical performance of the graphene/Co3O4 composite paper is the result from its unique features. Notably, the flexible structure of graphenic scaffold and the strong interaction between graphene and Co3O4 fibers are beneficial for providing excellent electronic conductivity, short transportation length for lithium ions, and elastomeric space to accommodate volume varies upon Li+ insertion/extraction.
