Abstract:Here we reported the fabrication of efficient polymer solar cells from regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT):fullerene derivative [6,6]-phenyl-C-61 butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) mixtures, in which solution-processed vanadium oxide (VOx) was used as a hole-extracting layer (HEL). The obtained devices exhibited a high power conversion efficiency of 3.96%, and can be enhanced to 4.06% and 4.16%, respectively, when two types of PEDOT:PSS with different conductivities were used in conjunction with the VOx layer. All the VOx-based devices showed a high fill factor (FF) over 70%, which was ascribed to efficient hole extracting efficiency associated with the solution-processed VOx hole-extracting layer. The origins of the improvement were also studied by transmission spectra, atomic force microscope (AFM), and capacitance-voltage characteristics.

Abstract:In this study, we report the utilization of low-temperature solution-processed Cs-doped VOX thin films as the hole extraction layers (HELs) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). It is found that the VOX:yCs (where y is the mole ratio of Cs versus V and y = 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5) thin films possess better electrical conductivities than that of the pristine VOX thin film. As a result, the PSCs incorporated with the VOX:yCs HEL exhibit large fill factors and high short-circuit currents, with consequently high power conversion efficiencies, which is more than 30% enhancement as compared with pristine VOX HEL. Our studies provide a facial way to enhance the electrical conductivity of the hole extraction layer for boosting device performance of perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:Here we employed a simple solution-processed method to prepare MoSx films as hole-transport layers (HTLs) in polymer solar cells (PSCs). Impressive performance was achieved with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7.50%, which is comparable to those of the conventional devices with PEDOT: PSS HTLs. The surface and optoelectronic characteristics of MoSx films obtained from different conditions were investigated. The results reveal that the annealing temperature of MoSx is one of the most important factors on determining the device performance. PSCs based on MoSx films exhibited much better device stability compared to the counterpart based on PEDOT: PSS, suggesting that the MoSx film is a promising alternative HTL for PSCs.

Abstract:Simple and low cost vanadyl oxalate (VOC2O4) has been identified as efficient hole transporting layer (HTL) in organic solar cells to facilitate high efficiency and stability. The robust VOC2O4 HTL can be fabricated with wide conditions, especially annealing at 200 °C and treated with UV‐ozone affording a top efficiency of 18.94% with a fill factor of 80% in binary OSCs. Organic solar cells (OSCs) with the conventional configuration usually use polyethylenedioxythiophene:polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) as the hole‐transporting layer (HTL); however, its acidity tends to affect the performance and long‐term stability of the devices. Therefore, replacing PEDOT:PSS with other more stable HTLs is essential for realizing the practical applications of OSCs. To achieve this goal, a simple and low‐cost vanadyl oxalate (VOC2O4) is identified as a HTL to facilitate high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs), good stability, and high thickness tolerance to be achieved in OSCs. The VOC2O4 thin film can be easily prepared by spin‐coating from its aqueous solution onto ITO/glass substrate and thermally annealed at 100 °C to exhibit high transmittance, conductivity, and work function. It can be applied as a robust HTL with wide processing conditions, especially after being heated at 200 °C and treated with UV‐ozone (UVO) to afford a very high PCE of 18.94% in OSCs. This value is among the highest PCEs obtained for binary OSCs. In addition, the derived OSCs exhibit high thickness tolerance and better stability than those based on PEDOT:PSS as HTL. These results reveal that VOC2O4 is an excellent HTL for OSCs, having great potential for large‐area device applications.

Abstract:In this study, we report the use of ultra-thin VOx film deposited by low temperature (50 °C) atomic layer deposition (ALD) as a hole transport layer (HTL) for perovskite solar cells (PSCs). High efficient PSCs with a power conversion efficiency of 11.53% are achieved with a ∼1 nm VOx layer. It is found that compared to the pristine ALD-VOx films, UV post-treatment significantly enhances the hole transportation ability of the VOx films. To understand the hole transporting mechanism in the VOx films, the ALD-VOx films grown on fluorine-doped tin oxide are investigated by photoelectron spectroscopy. Our investigation confirms that the defect states below the Fermi level of the VOx facilitate hole extractions, and that a greater V5+ oxidation state ratio is found in the UV-treated VOx films. This work shows the potential of using low temperature inorganic VOx films as the HTLs for the application of flexible and large-area PSCs.

Abstract:The hole extraction layer (HEL) plays a critical role in determining the charge extraction in inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) besides affecting the perovskite crystallization. Herein, we demonstrate efficient inverted perovskite solar cells based on solution-processed kesterite Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) as the HEL for the first time. We achieved CZTS HEL with desired phase purity and optimal film coverage by optimizing the spin-coating process. Moreover, photoluminescence (PL) studies indicate that the CZTS HEL developed in this work provides superior hole extraction in comparison with the widely reported NiOx. This ultimately results in a respectable power conversion efficiency of 13.75% for the proof-of-concept device, reaching a level that is comparable to that of the NiOx-based device.

Aqueous Solution‐Processed Vanadium Oxide for Efficient Hole Injection Interfacial Layer in Organic Light‐Emitting Diode

Abstract:Solution‐processing techniques have effectively promoted low‐cost and large‐scale manufacturing of organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs). An ecofriendly process is demonstrated here to obtain aqueous solution‐processed vanadium oxide (s‐VOx) for effective hole injection interfacial layer (HIL) by using commercial V2O5 powders. Atomic force microscopy and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements show that s‐VOx exhibits superior film morphology and non‐stoichiometry with slight oxygen deficiency which account for exceptional electronic properties in tailoring hole injection. With tris(8‐hydroxy‐quinolinato)aluminum as emitter, s‐VOx‐based OLED gives a maximum luminous efficiency of 6.4 cd A−1 and power efficiency of 4.1 lm W−1, which are comparable to those (6.1 cd A−1 and 3.6 lm W−1) of vacuum thermally deposited VOx‐based counterpart. The current versus voltage characteristics and impedance spectroscopy of hole‐only devices elucidate that s‐VOx possesses robust hole injection capacity and thereby promotes the OLED performance. Our results pave an alternative approach for broadening VOx application with solution process and accelerating OLED development.

Abstract:An inverted planar heterojunction perovskite solar cell (PSC) is one of the most competitive photovoltaic devices exhibiting a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) and nearly free hysteresis in the voltage–current output. However, the band alignment between the transport materials and the perovskite absorber has not been optimized, resulting in a lower open-circuit voltage (V oc) than that of regular PSCs. To address this issue, we tune the band alignment in perovskite photovoltaic architecture by introducing bilayer structured transport materials, e.g., the hole transport material poly(ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)/V2O5. In this study, solution processed inorganic V2O x interlayer is incorporated into PEDOT:PSS for achieving improved film surface properties as well as optical and electrical properties. For example, the work function (WF) was changed from 5.1 to 5.4 eV. A remarkably high PCE of 17.5% with nearly free hysteresis and a stabilized efficiency of 17.1% have been achieved. Electronic impedance spectra (EIS) demonstrate a significant increase in the recombination resistance after introducing the interlayer, associated with the high V oc output value of 1.05 V. Transient photocurrent and photovoltage measurements indicate that a comparable charge transport process and an inhibited recombination process occur in the PSC with the introduction of the V2O x interlayer.

Abstract:A solution-processed CuOx film has been successfully integrated as the hole-transporting layer (HTL) for inverted planar heterojunction perovskite solar cells (PVSCs). The CuOx layer is fabricated by simply spin-coating a copper acetylacetonate (Cu(acac)(2)) chloroform solution onto ITO glass with high transparency in the visible range. The compact and pinhole-free perovskite film with large grain domains is grown on the CuOx film. The inverted PVSCs with the structure of ITO/CuO(x)iMAPbI(3)/PC61BM/ZnO/Al are fabricated and show a best PCE of 17.43% under standard AM 1.5G simulated solar irradiation with a V-OC of 1.03 V, a J(sc) of 22.42 mA cm(-2), and a fill factor of 0.76, which is significantly higher and More stable than that fabricated from the often used hole-transporting material PEDOT:PSS (11.98%) under the same experimental conditions. The enhanced performance is attributed to the efficient hole extraction through the CuOx layer as well as the high-quality CH3NH3PbI3 films grown on the CuOx. Our results indicate that low-cost and solution-processed CuOx film is a promising HTL for high performance PVSCs with better stability. Enhanced Organic Photovoltaic Performance Through Promoting Crystallinity of Photoactive Layer and Conductivity of Hole-Transporting Layer by V2O5 Doped PEDOT:PSS Hole-Transporting Layers

Abstract:The fill factor (FF) as an important photovoltaic parameter is related to the property of transport layers and active layers for organic solar cells (OSCs). Herein, we propose a simple method to improve FF by using inorganic-organic composite hole transport layer (HTL) in OSCs. Through incorporating inorganic metal oxide, vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) nanoparticles into PEDOT:PSS, the morphology and conductivity of the composite HTL are improved, due to V2O5 nanoparticles can fill the pinholes in PEDOT:PSS and expose more PEDOT chains to the surface core-shell structure. The PTB7-Th:PC71BM-based OSCs with different HTLs were prepared. The power conversion efficiency and FF of the OSCs for the composite HTL can be greatly improved compared with the traditional HTL, which can reach up to 9.44% and 70.14%, respectively. The results of water contact angle and grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering show that the hydrophobicity of the composite HTL is improved, which can not only improve the physical contact but also greatly affect the subsequent active layer formation, thus increasing the crystallinity of PTB7-Th:PC71BM. These results demonstrate that V2O5:PEDOT:PSS has good application prospects as a HTL to realize high-efficient OSCs.
Efficient Hole Transport Layer for Organic Solar Cell Based on Exfoliated-MoS 2 Doped PEDOT

Abstract:We report an efficient hole transporting layer (HTL) for organic solar cell (OSC) based on solution-processed organic-inorganic hybrid composed of ultrasonic-exfoliated MoS2 nanosheets and dopamine-copolymerized poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) derivative (DA-P). The OSCs based on this new hybrid HTL show a marked performance improvement over those with single-component HTLs, and they retain up to 80% of their original power conversion efficiency after 35 days. Our investigations reveal that the boost in performance is due to a synergistic effect that improves both hole transport and extraction ability. This effect is mainly due to the doping of exfoliated-MoS2 nanosheets on DA-P. We employ a comprehensive range of spectroscopies to uncover that the dopant is derived from the oxidation products of MoS2 nanosheets during the ultrasonic exfoliation. Our work demonstrates an efficient hybrid HTL and offers new insights into the interaction of exfoliated-MoS2 nanosheets and the PEDOT derivatives.

Abstract:Antimony selenide (Sb2Se3) is a promising light absorber material for solar cells because of its superior photovoltaic properties. However, the current performance of the Sb2Se3 solar cell is much lower than its theoretical value (∼32%) due to its low open-circuit voltage (VOC ). In this paper, we have demonstrated inorganic vanadium oxides (VOx) as a hole transport layer (HTL) for Sb2Se3 solar cells to enhance efficiency through the VOC improvement. Here, a solution-processed VOx through the decomposition of the triisopropoxyvanadium (V) oxide is deposited on the Sb2Se3 absorber layer prepared by close-spaced sublimation (CSS). With VOx HTL, the built-in voltage (Vbi) is significantly increased, leading to improved VOC for the Sb2Se3 solar cell devices. As a result, the efficiency of the device increases from an average efficiency of 5.5% to 6.3% with the VOx.

Abstract:The hole transport layer (HTL) affects the device performance and stability of organic solar cells. In this work, a stable molybdenum oxide (MoO x ) hole transport layer with low cost was prepared by adjusting the state of the precursor solution with an alcoholic solution of molybdenum acetylacetonate through an oxidant. The MoO x transport layer has good transmittance with a work function of 5.07 eV and higher surface energy. The PM6:Y6 devices using MoO x HTL achieve a high efficiency of 16.8%. MoO x HTL exhibits good applicability with excellent performance in both ternary and all-polymer systems. Air storage stability T 80 of the all-polymer device using MoO x HTL was over 600 h, much higher than 70 h of the PEDOT:PSS-based device, and its thermal stability at 85 °C and operational stability under light show better stability than that of the PEDOT:PSS hole transport layer. This work provides a facile and low-cost method to fabricate HTL for organic solar cells, which is beneficial to improve their efficiency and stability.
Efficient and stable perovskite solar cells through electrochemically polymerized porphyrin-based hole-transporting materials

Abstract:The hole-transporting layer (HTL), a pivotal component of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), can significantly improve device performance. The unique light-harvesting and charge-transport capabilities of porphyrin derivatives have facilitated their adoption in solar cell applications, showcasing their potential as hole-transporting materials for PSCs. This study introduces an electrochemical polymerization method to deposit thin films of three distinct porphyrins as HTLs in PSCs. These polymerized films demonstrate exceptional thermal stability, with nickel-centered porphyrin films highly enhancing the power conversion efficiency, attributed to optimal energetic alignment and effective contact properties. Crucially, devices utilizing this approach exhibit outstanding long-term stability, maintaining 88% of their initial efficiency after 2200-hour storage under ambient conditions. This performance highlights the considerable promise of porphyrin-based materials in photovoltaic applications, suggesting that electrochemical polymerization could lead the way in developing efficient and durable PSCs. The innovative use of electrochemical polymerization represents a noteworthy contribution to the field, opening new avenues for the development of efficient and stable PSCs.

Molecular Design of Hole Transport Materials to Immobilize Ion Motion for Photostable Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:Poor operational stability is a crucial factor limiting the further application of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Organic semiconductor layers can be a powerful means for reinforcing interfaces and inhibiting ion migration. Herein, two hole-transporting molecules, pDPA-SFX and mDPA-SFX, are synthesized with tuned substituent connection sites. The meta-substituted mDPA-SFX results in a larger dipole moment, more ordered packing, and better charge mobility than pDPA-SFX, accompany with strong interface bonding on perovskite surfaces and suppressed ion motion as well. Importantly, mDPA-SFX-based PSCs exhibit an efficiency that has significantly increased from 22.5% to 24.8% and a module-based efficiency of 19.26% with an active area of 12.95 cm2. The corresponding cell retain 94.8% of its initial efficiency at maximum power point tracking (MPPT) after 1,000 h (T95 = 1,000 h). The MPPT T80 lifetime is as long as 2,238 h. This work illustrates that a small degree of structural variation in organic compounds leaves considerable room for developing new HTMs for light stable PSCs.

Abstract:Poly(9-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) is an attractive hole transport layer (HTL) for high efficiency perovskite solar cells (PSCs). But there is still some room for improvement in energy level alignment between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of PVK and the perovskite layer. In this work, the solvent of PVK-based HTL was optimized to adjust the energy level of HTLs by changing the volume ratio of chlorobenzene (CB) in dimethylformamide (DMF). Experimental results shows that 20% is the optimal ratio of CB in DMF, based on which the HOMO level of HTL was lifted from -5.62 eV to -5.44 eV. Meanwhile, the morphology of perovskite layer with larger grain size and lower trap density was obtained. As a result, the V-OC and J(SC) of PSCs was enhanced, leading to the increase of PCE from 15.41% to 18.27%. This work paves the way to realize high-efficiency PSCs based on PVK HTL.

Abstract:Nickel oxide (NiOx) has exhibited great potential as a hole transport layer (HTL) for fabricating efficient and stable perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, it has been greatly limited by its fabrication and manipulation process. In this work, a simple processing method on an ultrathin electrochemical mesoporous NiOx film manipulated by controllable ultraviolet/ozone (UVO) treatmentis employed; the duration of UVO treatment on the NiOx film significantly affects the photovoltaic properties of the PSCs. When the exposure duration increases, the wettability, electrical conductivity, nonstoichiometry, and valence band energy of the NiOx film are improved with varying degrees. Besides, the perovskite grain size, recombination resistance at the perovskite/NiOx interface, and build‐in potential of the device also increase, resulting in higher short‐circuit current density (JSC) and open‐circuit voltage (VOC). Combining these factors together, an optimal exposure time of UVO treatment on the NiOx film has been achieved at 5 min, which results in a significantly high performance with an efficiency of 19.67%, large VOC (>1.1 V), and JSC (>23 mA cm−2). Furthermore, the experimental results are coincide well with simulation results on the different corresponding subjects. Hopefully, this work could facilitate material manipulation toward scalable, high efficiency, and stable solar cells.
