Abstract:Near-infrared (NIR) long persistent phosphors have potential applications in medical imaging, anti-counterfeiting signs, and night vision surveillance. It is very important to obtain NIR long persistent phosphors with bright intensity and longer persistent time. In this article, Nb5+ ions are introduced into the NIR phosphor MgGa2O4: Cr3+ and the luminescence properties are investigated. The phosphors exhibit NIR long persistent emission peaking at 706 nm. After codoping with Nb5+, the afterglow intensity is increased 4 times and the photoluminescence (PL) intensity is improved 2.34 times. Thermoluminescence tests demonstrate that the trap density can be enriched and the distribution of traps has been adjusted via codoping Nb5+. Therefore co-doping Nb5+ can significantly improve the afterglow performance. This article might provide reference for designing new near-infrared long persistent phosphors.

Abstract:Recently, near-infrared phosphors have received a lot of attention due to their wide application in the field of detection and analysis, and it is urgent to develop efficient broadband NIR phosphors. In this paper, a conventional high-temperature solid-phase method was used to prepare a novel near-infrared phosphor CaGa4O7:Cr3+, Cr4+, which provides two emission bands ranging from 600 to 1000 nm and 1100–1600 nm. Although there are only four and five coordination sites in the CaGa4O7 (CGO) lattice, the doping of the Cr3+ ions in the CGO causes the Ga–O tetrahedral distortion into an octahedron, providing a favorable environment for the emission of the Cr3+ ions. Under blue light excitation, Cr3+ emits luminescence in the NIR I region from 600 to 1000 nm with a half-height width of up to 148 nm. With increasing Cr ion concentration, more and more Cr4+ preferentially occupy the four coordinated Ga3+ sites, and the intensity of the ultra-broad emission band in the NIR II region (1100 nm–1600 nm) increases with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 262 nm. To further optimize the emission spectrum, Yb3+ was codoped into CGO: Cr3+, Cr4+, the energy transfers from Cr3+ to Yb3+ in CGO was found, thus filling the gap between 1000 and 1100 nm in the CGO emission spectrum and obtaining a more complete ultra-wide spectrum. Moreover, the luminescence mechanism, energy transfer efficiency, and quantum yield are also studied in detail, and the ability of CaGa4O7:Cr3+, Cr4+, and Yb3+ luminescent materials to achieve ultra-broadband efficient near-infrared emission was demonstrated.

Abstract:In the K2LiGaF6:Mn4+,Cr3+ phosphor, the luminescence intensity of Cr3+ is enhanced by 129% due to the energy transfer between Mn4+ and Cr3+ ions. Notably, the PL internal quantum efficiency increases from 82.5% to 90.0%. The prepared NIR pc‐LED2 exhibits a photoelectric conversion efficiency of 15.3%, indicating promising applications in the fields of night vision monitoring and medical imaging. In this study, Cr3+‐doped and Mn4+‐Cr3+ co‐doped double perovskite fluoride phosphors K2LiGaF6 are prepared using a simple hydrothermal method. High‐efficiency near‐infrared (NIR) emission near 762 nm is obtained under blue‐light excitation, and the co‐doping effect of Mn4+ on the NIR luminescence properties of Cr3+ is studied. Compared with the Cr3+ single‐doped phosphor, Mn4+, and Cr3+ co‐doped K2LiGaF6 exhibit a sharp increase of 129% in NIR emission, an enhancement in the internal quantum efficiency from 82.5% to 90.0%, and an enhancement in the thermal stability at 425 K from 85.0% to 90.7%. The encapsulated NIR phosphor‐converted light‐emitting diode device at 300 mA exhibits a photoelectric conversion efficiency of 15.3%. These values exceed most previously reported results. This study provides a new approach for enhancing the luminescence properties of Cr3+‐doped fluoride NIR phosphors.

Abstract:Ce3+/Cr3+ co-doped LaAlO3 for near-infrared (NIR) long lasting phosphors were synthesized through solid-state reaction. Incorporation of Ce3+ ions into Cr3+-doped LaAlO3 significantly enhanced the NIR persistent luminescence by more than one order of magnitude compared with LaAlO3 doped with Cr3+. Detailed analysis of the photoluminescence, photoluminescence excitation, and Thermo-luminescence spectra, as well as the persistent decay behavior of Ce3+/Cr3+ co-doped LaAlO3, indicated that the improvement of NIR persistent luminescence at around 735 nm (Cr3+: E-2 ->(4)A(2) transition) is not only originated from a persistent energy transfer process from Ce3+ ions to Cr3+ ions, but also attributed to the extra efficient traps created by incorporation of Ce3+ ions. Abstract:The long persistent luminescence near-infrared (NIR) phosphors Zn3Ga2Ge2O10: x % Cr3+(x=0.1, 0.5, 2.5) were synthesized by solid-state reaction method. The microstructure and luminescence properties of the obtained samples were studied systemically. The results demonstrate that the luminescent intensity and afterglow time of the sample can be regulated by changing Cr3+ doping concentration and the calcine process. The afterglow mechanism of the samples were investigated and we found a method to balance the emission intensity and afterglow decay time. Specifically, Zn3Ga2Ge2O10: 2.5% Cr3+ samples show highest initial phosphorescence intensity but decay faster than other samples. Meanwhile, the host material obtained at 1300°C (with pre-sintering) can luminesce more than 40h after stoppage of the 365nm ultraviolet light irradiation. This new developed NIR long-persistent phosphor may have significant potential to be applied in many fields such as in vivo bio-imaging technology.

Abstract:Garnet-type Y3Sc2Ga3O12:Cr3+ phosphor has been synthesized by a solid-state reaction. XRD result revealed the successful phase formation and Cr3+ doping in Y3Sc2Ga3O12. The excitation spectrum at about 260, 450, and 630 nm corresponded to three spin-allowed Cr3+ d-d intra-transitions of 4A2-4T1 (4P), 4A2-4T1 (4F), and 4A2-4T2 (4F), respectively, among which the near infrared (NIR) emission peak at around 740 nm is identified. Moreover, the phosphorescence emission property, thermoluminescence and related luminescence mechanisms are discussed as well. The fabricated NIR phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (pc-LEDs) suggest its potential of Y3Sc2Ga3O12:Cr3+ phosphor for non-visible light source application.

High‐Performance Tunable Near‐Infrared Emitters of Cr3+‐Activated Garnet Phosphor Enabled by Chemical Unit Co‐Substitution

Abstract:Through a chemical unit co‐substitution strategy, the narowband‐emitting Lu3Ga5O12:6%Cr3+ is transformed into a broadband‐emitting Lu2CaGa4GeO12:6%Cr3+. Simultaneously, the internal quantum efficiency is increased to 80.7% while maintaining good thermal stability (I423 K = 80.4%). Ultimately, a prototype NIR pc‐LED with Lu2CaGa4GeO12:6%Cr3+ is fabricated and exhibited superior electro‐optical conversion efficiency (13.31%@100 mA). The escalating demand for portable near‐infrared (NIR) light sources has posed a formidable challenge to the development of NIR phosphors characterized by high efficiency and exceptional thermal stability. Taking inspiration from the chemical unit co‐substitution strategy, high‐performance tunable (Lu3‐xCax)(Ga5‐xGex)O12:6%Cr3+ (x = 0–3) phosphors are designed with an emission center from 704 to 780 nm and a broadest full width at half maximum (FWHM) of up to 172 nm by introducing Ca2+ and Ge4+ ions into the garnet structure. In particular, Lu3Ga5O12:6%Cr3+ demonstrates an anti‐thermal quenching phenomenon (I423K = 113.1%). Compared to Lu3Ga5O12:6%Cr3+, Lu2CaGa4GeO12:6%Cr3+ exhibits significantly improved FWHM and IQE by 108 nm and 25.5%, respectively, while maintaining good thermal stability (I423K = 80.4%). Finally, Lu2CaGa4GeO12:6%Cr3+ phosphor is combined with a 465 nm blue LED chip to fabricate NIR LED devices, exhibiting a NIR electroluminescence efficiency of 13.31%@100 mA and demonstrating successful applications in nocturnal illumination and biomedical imaging technology. This work offers a fresh perspective on the design of highly efficient NIR garnet phosphors.

Abstract:The Gd3Ga5O12 garnet exhibits a typical cubic structure in the HAADF‐STEM image, with Gd and Ga atoms arranged uniformly. The Ga3+ site is replaced by Cr3+, which shows suitable luminescence for plant lighting, with excitation at 450 nm and emission at 700–760 nm. The high efficiency of the phosphors and LED devices enables extended applications in the field of photophysiotherapy. Cr3+‐activated Gd3Ga5O12 garnet (GGG:Cr3+) near‐infrared (NIR) phosphors have shown promising applications in regulating plant growth. However, the low external quantum efficiency (EQE) results in a wall‐plug efficiency (WPE) of phosphor‐converted light‐emitting diodes (pc)‐LEDs of only ≈15%. Herein, an easy strategy to improve the luminescent properties of the GGG:Cr3+ phosphor is reported. Through optimization of the synthesized technology, the EQE is enhanced to 43.6%. Remarkably, the fabricated pc‐LEDs achieve a WPE as high as 34.3%. These results demonstrate a significant advancement in the development and applications of NIR phosphor materials and NIR pc‐LED devices.

Abstract:With the increasing application demand of near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy in security, agriculture, medical and other fields, people have been pursuing efficient and intelligent NIR light sources. Herein, Cr3+ doped Ca3Sc2Ge3O12 (CSGG) broadband NIR phosphors were successfully synthesized. Under the excitation of 480 nm, the emission peak of CSGG:Cr3+ locates at 785 nm, and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) is 106 nm. Low photoluminescence spectra (7 K and 77 K) support the broadband NIR emission comes from two Cr3+ luminescence centers occupying ScO6 and CaO8 sites, respectively. CSGG:Cr3+ shows excellent thermal stability (97%@100 °C), but low internal quantum efficiency (IQE = 22%). The introduction of Ce3+ leads to the enhancement of IQE from 22% to 61% due to the following two reasons: the energy transfer from Ce3+ to Cr3+ and the lattice distortion which improves the parity forbidden transition of Cr3+. The mechanism of excellent luminescence thermal stability is revealed from perspectives: thermal activation energy, Huang-Rhys factor and thermal ionization effect. Benefiting from the excellent performance of CSGG:Cr3+, Ce3+ NIR phosphors, the combination with blue light chips demonstrates its potential applications in night vision, biological imaging, and nondestructive testing.

Abstract:Cr3+ doped phosphor shows great potential for near-infrared (NIR) light-emitting diodes (LED), but it suffers from low quantum efficiency and poor thermal stability. Herein, a novel Cr3+ doped broadband NIR garnet Ca3Sc2Ge3O12 phosphor was developed. The multisite structure of the emission band is investigated by site-selective spectroscopy and is attributed to the octahedral Cr3+ perturbed by defects. Moreover, we propose different strategies to enhance the luminescence of the phosphor, including enhancement of crystallinity and elimination of defects. Compared with the initial sample, the emission intensity of the optimized phosphor is improved for 8.6 times. The optimal Ca3Sc2Ge3O12: 0.06Cr3+ phosphor exhibits excellent thermal stability. At 423 K, the integral emission intensity of the optimal sample remains 94.7% of that at room temperature. Finally, high-performance NIR LED was fabricated using a blue LED and the title phosphor. The packaged LED lamp has high radiance (109.3 mW@300 mA) and photoelectric efficiency (15.96%@40 mA). Our study not only provides a boulevard for enhancing the luminescence of Cr doped NIR phosphor, but also gives a new perspective for understanding the multisite luminescence of Cr3+ in garnet host.

Achieving the potential multifunctional near-infrared materials Ca3In2- x Ga x Ge3O12:Cr3+ using a solid state method

Abstract:Near-infrared spectroscopy is developing rapidly in the fields of human detection and food analysis due to its fast response and non-invasive characteristics. Herein, we report the novel near-infrared garnet-type Ca3In2Ge3O12:xCr3+ and Ca3In2-x Ga x Ge3O12:0.07Cr3+ phosphors, in which there are two crystallographic sites (CaO8, InO6) that can be substituted by Cr3+, and cation regulation engineering for In3+ is utilized to tune the luminescence properties. Under the 480 nm excitation, the Ca3In2Ge3O12:xCr3+ phosphor emits a broad spectrum at 650-1150 nm, which matches well with the first biological window. The concentration quenching mechanism and luminescence mechanism of Ca3In2Ge3O12:xCr3+ were studied and the site assignment of the two luminescence centers was discussed using low temperature spectra and fluorescence decay curves. The application performance of the phosphor was improved by introducing Ga3+ to substitute for In3+, and the blue shift of nearly 50 nm was explained by crystal field and nephelauxetic effects. At the same time, a 24% increase in the activation energy of thermal quenching of phosphors was obtained, which has been analyzed using the mechanism of phonon transition and the change of structural rigidity. Thus, the near-infrared emitting Ca3In0.2Ga1.8Ge3O12:0.07Cr3+ phosphor was obtained, which has lower cost, higher emission intensity, and much better thermal stability, spreading the application of phosphors in plant far red light illumination, human body detection, and spectral conversion technology of silicon-based solar cells. Simultaneously, an example of a near-infrared plant illumination experiment is given, demonstrating that a cation substitution strategy based on crystal field control could be applied to tune spectral distribution and develop novel potential phosphors for practical optical application.

Abstract:The near-infrared (NIR) long persistent phosphors LiGa5O8:Cr3+ have attracted considerable attention owing to the potential applications in medical imaging. A series of novel LiGa5O8:Cr3+ phosphors with different Sn4+ concentrations were successfully prepared by a high temperature solid-state reaction. The influence of codoping Sn4+ on photoluminescence, long persistent luminescence and thermoluminescence properties were systematically investigated. The results showed the persistent luminescence performance of phosphors was significantly enhanced after the incorporation of Sn4+ ions. Thermoluminescence spectra indicated that the incorporation of Sn4+ contributes to the formation of defects and increase the traps density, thus improving the persistent luminescence properties of LiGa5O8:Cr3+ phosphors.

Abstract:Upon excitation with UV/blue light, the sample exhibited strong emission bands in the range 600–1200 nm peaking at 937 nm. In addition, efficient infrared laser‐promoted photostimulated luminescence implies potential application in optical storage. Recently, long persistent phosphors (LPPs) have attracted significant attention as promising candidates for biomedical applications. However, the serious decrease in luminescence intensity in tissue still remains a major challenge. Therefore, exploring more competitive LPPs and achieving reproducible tissue imaging is crucial. In this study, a new series of near‐infrared (NIR) phosphors La3Ga5Sn1‐xO14:xCr3+ (x = 0.005–0.05) were synthesized using a high‐temperature solid‐state method. The as‐synthesized samples were characterized using X‐ray diffraction, diffuse/photoluminescence spectroscopy, fluorescence decay curves, and thermoluminescence spectroscopy. Upon excitation with ultraviolet light, strong emission bands were observed in the range 600–1200 nm with an optimal doping concentration of x = 0.02 mol. Moreover, La3Ga5SnO14:Cr3+ exhibits persistent luminescence due to the presence of suitable energy traps, which prompted the phosphor to emit NIR light even after the removal of the excitation source.

Abstract:Near-infrared phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (NIR pc-LEDs) are compact light sources of great interest for NIR spectroscopy applications. Beyond typical Cr3+-activated NIR-emitting phosphors, there exists a strong demand for Cr3+-free alternatives with high efficiency and broadband emission to rich the landscape of NIR luminescent materials and extend their range of application fields. Here, we report a series of Fe3+-activated Ca3Ga2Sn3O12 garnet-type phosphors exhibiting broadband NIR emission in the 650-1000 nm range attributed to 4T1(G)-->6A1(S) transition, with a maximum at 754 nm and a FWHM of 89 nm upon UV excitation. The spectroscopic results were analyzed according to the Tanabe-Sugano theory from which the crystal field parameter Dq and Racah parameters B and C were obtained for the octahedrally coordinated Fe3+ ion. Notably, the NIR persistent luminescence lasting over 1 h was detected following UV or X-ray irradiation. The possible mechanism involving electron traps was proposed to explain the observed persistent luminescence. Furthermore, a NIR pc-LED was fabricated by coating synthesized phosphor on a UV chip, and its performance was evaluated to assess its potential suitability as a NIR light source. Our discovery of novel type of nontoxic Fe3+-activated broadband NIR luminescence phosphors with efficient NIR persistent luminescence paves the way for discovering Cr3+-free multifunctional NIR luminescence materials, thereby expanding their application possibilities.

Abstract:Here, a "chemical unit co-substitution" method is used to improve the near-infrared (NIR) emission of phosphors, using [Zn2+-Ge4+] to co-substitute [Ga3+-Ga3+] sites to reduce crystal field splitting to affect the structure of gallium oxide. A series of broadband NIR phosphors are synthesized by a high-temperature solid-phase method, and their phase structures, crystal structures, morphologies, diffuse reflectance spectra, and luminescence lifetimes are investigated. The Ga1.68(Zn-Ge)0.3O3:0.02Cr3+ (GZGOC) phosphor exhibits NIR wide-band emission, with a peak wavelength of 766 nm and a half-width of 138 nm. Meanwhile, the quantum yield of photoluminescence can reach 81.2%. The phosphor has good thermal stability. When the temperature reaches 373 K, its emission intensity still remains at 73.4% of that at room temperature. A 460 nm LED chip and this phosphor are used to fabricate a phosphor-converted light emitting diode (pc-LED) device which can be used as a NIR light source. All these results show the application potential of the as-prepared phosphor in NIR imaging.
Photoluminescence and afterglow tuning in ultra-broadband near-infrared Mg3Y2Ge3O12:Cr3+ phosphor via cation substitution

Abstract:Broadband near-infrared (NIR) long-persistent phosphors with adjustable optical property have been urgently demanded for practical applications in bio-imaging and plant cultivation. Herein, Cr3+ doped Mg3Y2Ge3O12 garnet phosphors with ultra-broadband NIR emissions (600−1200 nm) peaked at 776 nm were prepared via a high-temperature solid-state reaction method, and the cation sites for Cr3+ were well identified and assigned based on the Rietveld refinement and time-resolved emission spectra (TRES). Under the excitation at 436 nm, wide-range modulations in intensity, wavelength (763−834 nm) and bandwidth (143−227 nm) of 4T2→4A2 (4F) transition were achieved via Zn2+/Ca2+ substitution, which completely covers the maximum absorption ranges (715−1050 nm) of bacteriochlorophyll from anaerobic photosynthetic bacteria (PSB). According to the classic Tanabe-Sugano theory, the crystal field parameters around different Cr3+ centers were calculated to explain the spectral tailoring effect. Meanwhile, the afterglow duration was greatly improved from 2 min to 66 and 240 min after co-doping Zn2+/Ca2+, and the trap distribution and mechanism was elaborately explored via thermos-luminescence (TL) experiments. Above results provide an effective strategy for designing NIR-emitting phosphors with desired optical and afterglow performance, which well meets the light requirements of diverse applications especially in plant growth.
