Abstract:In recent years, tremendous progresses have been achieved for solution processed organic solar cells (OSCs). The strategy of adding a third component to fabricate ternary solar cells has emerged as an effective method to enhance the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of devices. Furthermore, small molecules feature as lower viscosity and excellent repeatability which facilitate the effective morphology control during fabrication process for enhanced photovoltaic performance. Herein, we report a series of ternary solar cells based on a liquid crystal molecule BTR and two electron acceptors of PC71BM and Y6. These molecules show complementary absorption to broaden spectra coverage and form energy levels cascade for efficient charge transfer. Meanwhile, thanks to the improved molecular packing and formed efficient charge transport network in the ternary blend film, the optimal ternary device possesses the improved charge dynamics and suppressed charge recombination. Thus, ternary solar cells deliver the highest PCE of 11.82% with simultaneously enhanced parameters of JSC, VOC and FF. This finding further illustrates the important roles of synergistic effect of fullerenes and non-fullerene acceptors in fabricating highly efficient ternary solar cells.

Abstract:We prepared ternary organic solar cells (OSCs) by incorporating the medium wavelength absorption polymer PSEHTT into the PM6:L8-BO binary system. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) is improved from 15.83% to 16.66%. Although the fill factor (FF) is slightly reduced, the short-circuit current density (JSC) and open-circuit voltage (VOC) are significantly increased at the same time. A small amount of PSEHTT has a broad absorption spectrum in the short wavelength region and has good compatibility with PM6, which is conducive to fine-tuning the photon collection and improving the JSC. In addition, the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level of PSEHTT is deeper than that of PM6, which broadens the optical bandgap. This study provides an effective method to fabricate high-performance ternary OSCs by using a lower concentration of PSEHTT with PM6 as a hybrid donor material, which ensures a better surface and bulk morphology, improves photon collection, and broadens the optical bandgap.

Abstract:Ternary organic solar cells (OSCs) provide a convenient and effective means to further improve the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of binary ones via composition control. However, the role of the third component remains to be explored in specific binary systems. Herein, we report ternary blend solar cells by adding the narrow-bandgap donor PCE10 as the mediator into the PBDB-T:IDTT-T binary blend system. The extended absorption, efficient fluorescence resonance energy transfer, enhanced charge dissociation and induced tighter molecular packing of the ternary blend films enhance the photovoltaic properties of devices and deliver a champion PCE of 10.73% with an impressively high open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 1.03 V. Good miscibility and similar molecular packing behavior of the components guarantee the desired morphology in the ternary blend films, leading to solar cell devices with over 10% PCEs at a range of compositions. Our results suggest ternary systems with properly aligned energy levels and overlapping absorption amongst the components hold great promises to further enhance performance of corresponding binary ones.

Abstract:Diketopyrrolopyrrole-ethynylene-bridged porphyrin dimers are capped with electron-deficient 3-ethylrhodanine (A2) via a π-bridge of phenylene ethynylene, affording two new acceptor-donor-acceptor structural porphyrin dimers (DPP-2TTP and DPP-2TP) with strong absorption in ranges of 400-550 nm (Soret bands) and 700-900 nm (Q bands). Their intrinsic absorption deficiency between the Soret and Q bands could be perfectly compensated by a wide-bandgap small molecule DR3TBDTTF (D*) with absorption at 500-700 nm. Impressively, the optimal ternary device based on the blend films of DPP-2TPP, DR3TBDTTF (20 wt %), and PC71BM shows a PCE of 11.15%, whereas the binary devices based on DPP-2TTP/PC71BM and DPP-2TP/PC71BM blend films exhibit PCEs of 9.30 and 8.23%, respectively. The high compatibility of the low bandgap porphyrin dimers with the wide-bandgap small molecule provides a new threesome with PC71BM for highly efficient panchromatic ternary organic solar cells.

Abstract:A new strategy for designing ternary solar cells is reported in this paper. A low-bandgap polymer named PTB7-Th and a high-bandgap polymer named PBDTTS-FTAZ sharing the same bulk ionization potential and interface positive integer charge transfer energy while featuring complementary absorption spectra are selected. They are used to fabricate efficient ternary solar cells, where the hole can be transported freely between the two donor polymers and collected by the electrode as in one broadband low bandgap polymer. Furthermore, the fullerene acceptor is chosen so that the energy of the positive integer charge transfer state of the two donor polymers is equal to the energy of negative integer charge transfer state of the fullerene, enabling enhanced dissociation of all polymer donor and fullerene acceptor excitons and suppressed bimolecular and trap assistant recombination. The two donor polymers feature good miscibility and energy transfer from high-bandgap polymer of PBDTTS-FTAZ to low-bandgap polymer of PTB7-Th, which contribute to enhanced performance of the ternary solar cell.
Ternary Organic Solar Cells with a Phase-Modulated Surface Distribution Via the Addition of a Small Molecular Luminescent Dye to Obtain a High Efficiency over 10.5%

Abstract:Incorporation of a ternary organic component is an effective strategy to enhance the performance of bulk heterojunction (BHJ) organic solar cells (OSCs). In this study, a small molecule luminescent dye, C545T, was first doped into blends of PTB7-Th/PC71BM and PTB7/PC71BM as a third component to fabricate ternary OSCs. It is demonstrated that C545T can disrupt the severe vertical distribution in the binary blend and effectively modulate the novel surface chemical configuration by improving the self-assembly process of the polymer donor, as a result of the good miscibility among the active layer materials and the π-π interactions between PC71BM and C545T. The obtained homogeneously bicontinuous BHJ with numerous interpenetrating nanofibers optimizes the domain size of exciton diffusion and the length of charge transfer. The energy transfer between C545T and polymers changes the transmission path of photo-generated excitons, which together improve the exciton dissociation process and reduce the recombination loss. Champion power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 10.69% and 9.42% were achieved by the ternary blends of PTB7-Th/C545T/PC71BM and PTB7/C545T/PC71BM, respectively, which correspond to a nearly 20% enhancement over their binary counterparts.

Abstract:High‐performance ternary organic solar cells with a decreased bandgap and increased open‐circuit voltage are fabricated with the small‐molecule donor BTID‐2F featuring a higher highest occupied molecular orbital energy level than PM6 as the third component in the PM6:Y6 system. Significant improvements in ternary device performance are realized, and an impressive power conversion efficiency of 18.52% is obtained.Ternary architecture is a promising strategy to further boost the performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). Reducing the bandgap of the active layer materials not only widens the absorption wavelength range and enhances the short‐circuit current (Jsc) of the OSC, but also decreases the open‐circuit voltage (Voc) of the device, leading to a trade‐off situation for the optimization of the material system. Herein, a small‐molecule donor BTID‐2F, featuring a narrower bandgap than that of PM6, is introduced into a PM6:Y6 based system. The redshift in external quantum efficiency indicates the narrower bandgap and better aggregation in the ternary blends than those of binary ones. Interestingly, lower energy disorder and energy loss are also attained for the ternary devices, leading to higher Voc. Furthermore, owing to the suppressed recombination and morphological optimization, a simultaneous enhancement in the Jsc and fill factor boosts the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of ternary OSC to 17.9% compared to 16.62% for the binary device. Likewise, replacing the acceptor with the L8‐BO molecule further improves the ternary PCE to 18.52%. This work indicates an emerging approach for fabricating high‐performance ternary OSCs with a decreased bandgap and increased Voc.

Abstract:Ternary strategy is one of the most effective methods to further boost the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs). In terms of high-efficiency PM6:Y6 binary systems, there is still room to further reduce energy loss (Eloss) through regulating molecular packing and aggregation by introducing a third component in the construction of ternary OPVs. Here we introduce a simple molecule BR1 based on an acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A) structure with a wide bandgap and high crystallinity into PM6:Y6-based OPVs. It is proved that BR1 can be selectively dispersed into the donor phase in the PM6:Y6 and reduce disorder in the ternary blends, thus resulting in lower Eloss, non-rad and Eloss. Furthermore, the mechanism study reveals well-develop phase separation morphology and complemented absorption spectra in the ternary blends, leading to higher charge mobility, suppressed recombination, which concurrently contributes to the significantly improved PCE of 17.23% for the ternary system compared with the binary ones (16.21%). This work provides an effective approach to improve the performance of the PM6:Y6-based OPVs by adopting a ternary strategy with a simple molecule as the third component.

Abstract:Ternary bulk heterojunction (BHJ) blends have been demonstrated as a promising approach to increase the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of organic solar cells. Currently, most studies of ternary organic solar cells are based on blends of two donors and one acceptor, because of the limitation in acceptor materials. Here, we report that high-performance ternary solar cells have been fabricated with a wide-bandgap polymer donor (PDBT-T1) and two acceptor materials, phenyl-C70-butyric acid methyl ester (PC70BM), and nonfullerene acceptor (ITIC-Th). The addition of ITIC-Th into the BHJ blends dramatically increases the light absorption. Consequently, the champion ternary solar cell shows a high PCE of similar to 10.5%, with an open-circuit voltage (V-oc) of 0.95 V, a short-circuit current (J(sc)) of 15.60 mA/cm(2), and a fill factor (FF) of 71.1%, which largely outperforms their binary counterparts. Detailed studies reveal that the ternary solar cells work in a parallel-like device model (ITIC-Th and PC70BM form their own independent transport network) when ITIC-Th loading is >30% in the ternary blends. The results indicate that the combination of fullerene derivative and appropriate nonfullerene acceptor in a ternary blend can be a new strategy to fabricate high-performance ternary organic solar cells.

Abstract:Ternary strategy is an effective method to optimize photovoltaic process and improve device performance. In this work, a benzobisoxazole-based conjugated polymer PBBO was designed and employed as the guest component for PM6:BTP-eC9 based devices. The polymer PBBO shows a large band gap of 2.16 eV and strong photoluminescence property, with efficient energy transfer observed between PBBO and PM6. The ternary blends not only form a cascaded energy level distribution, but also an alloy-like structure, which can effectively promote the exciton dissociation, charge transfer and efficiently suppress charge recombination. As a result, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the ternary device is substantially improved from 17.50% to 18.66% with the incorporation of PBBO guest component. Meanwhile, the ternary device shows good stability with retaining 86% of initial efficiency after storage for 2000 hours. This research demonstrates that the polymer PBBO would be an excellent photovoltaic material to optimize the performance of polymer solar cells.

Abstract:In this work, a ternary blend strategy based on PBDB-T and two small molecular acceptors (IDTT-OB and IDT-PDOT-C6) is demonstrated to simultaneously improve the photocurrent and reduce the voltage loss in organic solar cells (OSCs). The improved photocurrent is partially due to a broad absorption spectrum of the active layer. In addition, we find that the ternary system possesses a higher degree of crystallinity, smaller domain size, higher domain purity, and higher and more balanced charge-carrier mobilities in comparison with the two corresponding binary systems. The reduced voltage loss in the ternary device is mainly due to a lower energy loss (Eloss) of charge carriers. We achieve a Eloss of only 0.50 eV, which is one of the lowest values reported for the ternary nonfullerene OSCs. Abstract:Herein, efficient organic solar cells (OSCs) are realized with the ternary blend of a medium band gap donor (poly[(2,6-(4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl)-benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene))-alt-(5,5-(1',3'-di-2-thienyl-5',7'-bis(2-ethylhexyl)benzo[1',2'-c:4',5'-c']dithiophene-4,8-dione)] (PBDB-T)) with a low band gap acceptor (2,2'-((2Z,2'Z)-(((2,5-difluoro-1,4-phenylene)bis(4,4-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-4H-cyclopenta[2,1-b:3,4-b']dithiophene-6,2-diyl))bis(methanylylidene))bis(5,6-difluoro-3-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-indene-2,1-diylidene))dimalononitrile (HF-PCIC)) and a near-infrared acceptor (2,2'-((2Z,2'Z)-(((4,4,9,9-tetrakis(4-hexylphenyl)-4,9-dihydro-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b']dithiophene-2,7-diyl)bis(4-((2-ethylhexyl)oxy)thiophene-5,2-diyl))bis(methanylylidene))bis(5,6-difluoro-3-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-indene-2,1-diylidene))dimalononitrile (IEICO-4F)). It is shown that the introduction of IEICO-4F third component into PBDB-T:HF-PCIC blend increases the short-circuit current density (Jsc) of the ternary OSC to 23.46 mA cm-2, with a 44% increment over those of binary devices. The significant current improvement originates from the broadened absorption range and the active layer morphology optimization through the introduction of IEICO-4F component. Furthermore, the energy loss of the ternary cells (0.59 eV) is much decreased over that of the binary cells (0.80 eV) due to the reduction of both radiative recombination from the absorption below the band gap and nonradiative recombination upon the addition of IEICO-4F. Therefore, the power conversion efficiency increases dramatically from 8.82% for the binary cells to 11.20% for the ternary cells. This work provides good examples for simultaneously achieving both significant current enhancement and energy loss mitigation in OSCs, which would lead to the further construction of highly efficient ternary OSCs.
Improved photon-to-electron response of ternary blend organic solar cells with a low band gap polymer sensitizer and interfacial modification

Abstract:Incorporating two polymer donors with different bandgaps to compose a ternary blend bulk heterojunction (BHJ) is proved to be an effective approach to improve the device performance of BHJ polymer solar cells (PSCs). Here, we demonstrate an efficient ternary PSC consisting of a polythieno[3,4-b]-thiophene/benzodithiophene (PTB7):[6,6]-phenyl C-71 butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) host blend sensitized by a low band gap (LBG) polymer poly[2,7-(5,5-bis-(3,7-dimethyloctyl)-5H-dithieno[3,2-b:20,30-d]pyran)-alt-4,7-(5,6-difluoro-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)] (PDTP-DFBT). The addition of the PDTP-DFBT sensitizer remarkably extended the PSC photon to electron response from 750 to 900 nm, which increased the J(sc) from 15.12 to 16.27 mA cm(-2), and the device performance from 8.08% to 8.63%. A study on the morphology involving the atomic force microscopy mapping and grazing incident X-ray diffraction showed that the incorporation of PDTP-DFBT improved the crystallinity of the PTB7 film with most of the sensitizers associated with the PTB7 domains when blending with a PC71BM film. This observation, together with the unchanged V-oc of the ternary PSC, implies a sensitizing mechanism with addition of PDTP-DFBT. After further interfacial modification with a capronic acid self-assembling monolayer (C3-SAM), a higher PCE of 9.06% was achieved, which is among the highest values of efficient ternary PSCs. Our work suggests that a sensitizing mechanism of ternary blends compensates for the light absorbing limitation of binary blend PSCs for high device performance.

Abstract:Research has shown that ternary strategy is an effective tool for improving the performance of organic solar cells (OSCs) and simple-structured small molecules with low-cost and wide bandgap which broadens the scope of the choice in third components recently attracted the attention of researchers. Herein, a small molecule with benzo [1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene (BDT) core named BR-C12 which mixed well with PM6 has been designed and synthesized. Incorporating BR-C12 as third component into PM6:Y6, BR-C12 exhibits a complementary absorption with PM6 and Y6, promoted exciton dissociation and charge collection, reduced bimolecular recombination, resulting in more ordered molecular packing. The PM6:Y6:BR-C12 (1:1.2:0.1, weight ratio) OSC shows an improved power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.02% in comparison to host binary devises (16.42%). In addition, by employing BR-C12 as third component into PM6:L8-BO, the ternary device based on PM6:L8-BO:BRC12 also achieves significant enhancement in device photovoltaic performance with a PCE of 18.26%. In addition, BR-C12-added ternary devices exhibit improved stability than binary ones. This work presents a method for constructing high-performance ternary OSCs and enriches the abundance of materials for the third components.

Abstract:Ternary strategy is one of the most effective methods for improving the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs). The selection of the third component is very important for improving device performance. In this study, we demonstrated a simple and effective copolymer, PBDTDTzT, which is based on a benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene donor unit and 2,5-di(thiazol-2-yl)thiophene acceptor unit, as the third component in the PM6:Y6 system. An optimal ternary device based on PM6:PBDTDTzT:Y6 (w/w = 1:0.1:1.1) achieved an impressive PCE of 17.0%. Detailed studies revealed that the loading of PBDTDTzT into the PM6:Y6 blend can not only optimize the ladder-type arrangement of energy levels but can also further optimize the morphology of the blend film, leading to balanced charge transport and reduced charge recombination simultaneously. Enhanced device performance is a result of the strong crystallization of PBDTDTzT and good compatibility between PBDTDTzT and PM6:Y6 blends. The results indicate that PBDTDTzT is a promising third component of high-efficiency ternary OSCs.

Abstract:Ternary blend is proved to be a potential contender for achieving high efficiency in organic photovoltaics, which can apparently strengthen the absorption of active layer so as to better harvest light irradiation. Much of the previous work in ternary polymer solar cells focuses on broadening the absorption spectrum; however, a new insight is brought to study the third component, which in tiny amounts influents the small‐molecule acceptor‐based device performance. Without contributing to complementing the absorption, a minute amount of fullerene derivative, Bis‐PC70BM, can effectively play an impressive role as sensitizer in enhancing the external quantum efficiency of the host binary blend, especially for polymeric donor. Detailed investigations reveal that the minute addition of Bis‐PC70BM can realize morphology modification as well as facilitate electron transfer from polymeric donor to small molecule acceptor via cascade energy level modulation, and therefore lead to an improvement in device efficiency.

Abstract:A ternary strategy is viable to minimize the trade-off between short-circuit current density (Jsc) and open-circuit voltage (Voc) in organic solar cells. Generally, the ternary OSCs can achieve a higher PCE than the binary counterparts by subtly utilizing the particular photoelectric properties of the third material. In this regard, we choose BTP-CC with a higher-lying LUMO level based on a fused TPBT (dithienothiophen[3.2-b]-pyrrolobenzothiadiazole) central framework and CC (2-(6-oxo-5,6-dihydro-4H-cyclopenta [b]thiophen-4-ylidene) malononitrile) flanking groups as the third component to broaden the light-absorption spectrum, regulate the bulk heterojunction (BHJ) morphology, improve the Voc, and reduce the charge recombination in OSCs. In addition, BTP-CC demonstrates intense intermolecular energy transfer to Y6 by fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) pathway, which is due to the photoluminescence (PL) spectrum of BTP-CC covering the absorption region of Y6. The PM6:Y6:BTP-CC based ternary OSC achieves a champion PCE of 17.55%. Further investigation indicates that introduction of BTP-CC could reduce the trap states in OSCs, leading to an increased charge carrier density. Moreover, the incorporation of BTP-CC could improve the device stability. These results demonstrated that BTP-CC is important in improving the photovoltaic performance of ternary OSCs, and this work also provides a guideline for constructing ideal ternary OSCs in the future.

Abstract:Integrating a third component into the binary system is considered to be one of the most effective strategies to further enhance the power conversion efficiency (PCE) in organic solar cells (OSCs). Here, a novel perylene diimide (PDI) derivative featuring 3D structure, TPA-4PDI, with tetraphenyladamantane central core is developed as a guest electron acceptor to be incorporated into the PM6:Y6 binary system. The champion PCE of ternary OSC is recorded to be 18.29% by adding 7.5 wt.% of TPA-4PDI in the ternary blend, which photovoltaic performance is enhanced with synergistically increased open-circuit voltage (V-oc) of 0.849 V, short-circuit current density (J(sc)) of 27.55 mA cm(-2), and fill factor (FF) of 78.21%. TPA-4PDI exhibits a complementary absorption band with PM6 and Y6 while its lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy level falls between the two host materials. The addition of TPA-4PDI can effectively suppress the recombination behavior, inhibit the excessive aggregation of Y6 and improve the morphology of PM6:Y6 blend. All these effects function synergistically and then lead to the enhancement of V-oc,V- J(sc), and FF in ternary OSCs. This study suggests that developing PDI derivatives as the third component is an effective method to further improve the performance of ternary OSCs.
