Abstract:This paper presents the design of a <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\mathrm{4} \times \mathrm{4}$</tex> elements circularly polarized microstrip patch array at millimeter-wave band. The sequential rotation method and series-parallel feed network are employed in the power distribution circuit for antenna performance improvement. The feed network is integrated on the same substrate layer of the antenna array in order to facilitate processing and manufacturing, and the total size of the design is <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\mathrm{10} \text{mm}\times \mathrm{12} \text{mm}\times \mathrm{0.127} \text{mm}$</tex> . The simulated return loss exhibits an impedance bandwidth of 7%, and the 3-dB axial ratio bandwidth of 10% with respect to 78.5 GHz is obtained. Besides, the maximal gain is 17.6dBi at 78.5GHz.

Abstract:A broadband high-gain planar array antenna is proposed for 60 GHz wireless communication applications. It consists of two layers to achieve a compact topology through a standard PCB fabrication process. The wideband substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) feeding network is placed in the bottom layer while the radiating patches are on the top layer. A novel feeding structure is proposed to widen the bandwidth in terms of impedance matching and gain. Measured results of the fabricated array show about 14.6% of reflection coefficient bandwidth (S11<;-10dB) in the frequency band 57~66 GHz. The gain fluctuates less than 1.5 dB within the same band. Good agreement between the simulated and measured results validates our design.

Abstract:In this invited paper, several W-band high-efficiency and high-gain integrated antenna arrays based on MEMS bulk micromachining technology are introduced. They are W-band high-efficiency high-gain wideband integrated array antenna and W-band high-efficiency high-gain two-dimensional low SLL integrated array antenna. Owing to the characteristics of high-gain and compact configuration, these types of antenna arrays can be excellent candidates for W-band wireless applications.

Abstract:Novel designs of planar aperture antenna (PAA) arrays are proposed in this article, which achieve dual-polarized and high-gain performances in the 60 GHz unlicensed band. In order to achieve high gain, the original PAA is expanded to its two-dimensional array form, and the two linear polarizations share the same apertures. The two polarizations are realized by using orthogonal coupling slots excited by substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) power dividers below. Two array prototypes with 8 x 8 and 16 x 16 radiation cells are designed and manufactured based on low-temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) technology for ease of integration. The simulated results show that the two antennas have -10 dB impedance bandwidth and 3 dB gain bandwidth of 57.5-65 and 57-64 GHz, respectively, with stable, no-squint, and symmetrical beams in band, which is verified by measurements. Compared with other reported high-gain and dual-polarized millimeter-wave antennas, the proposed antennas feature a low-profile, simple structure while keeping high aperture efficiency. The proposed antennas are very suitable for integration and are promising in 60 GHz short-range communication applications.

Abstract:This communication addresses the cost challenges with implementing high-gain antennas in the millimeter-wave band. The designed antenna exhibits a favorable broadband of 32.9% and achieves an aperture efficiency of up to 79.5%. This proposed array is constructed from five stacked layers of printed circuit boards (PCBs), with four layers composed of FR-4 boards. The idea of air filling is widely used in this design to mitigate high dielectric loss of FR-4 boards. The array adopts a sandwich construction approach to realize air-filled high-efficiency radiation cavities, with the radiation elements sandwiched by the feeding structure. The feeding structure utilizes a hybrid network that combines a substrate integrated gap waveguide (SIGW) and microstrip (MS) lines. The air-filled SIGW (AF-SIGW) is improved to minimize dielectric loss, and the MS lines are terminated with loads to broaden the bandwidth. Particularly, to the best of authors' knowledge, this is the first reported instance of AF-SIGW utilization for planar array design in the available literature. A prototype of an array is implemented and tested, showing a good agreement between simulations and measurements.

Abstract:An innovative approach to designing millimeter-wave wideband high-gain large-scale antenna arrays is proposed with the use of waveguide T-junctions with multiple reflection nulls for building an H-type full-corporate feed network. By collaboratively optimizing the properties of the reflection nulls, the undesirable in-phase superposition of small reflections in the feed network can be weakened, thus improving the bandwidth of the array. The method of synthesizing wideband iris-loaded H-plane stepped waveguide T-junctions with three reflection nulls is investigated. A $16 \times 16$ horn array in the Ka-band is designed based on the presented approach and manufactured by employing metallic 3-D printing technology. Excellent performance, including a wide bandwidth of 48.4%, a gain of up to 34.5 dBi, and symmetrical and stable radiation patterns in both the E- and H-planes, are experimentally verified. This work is feasible and convenient for the implementation of high-gain wideband antenna arrays, which is valuable to emerging millimeter-wave applications.

Abstract:A novel wideband high-gain air-filled waveguide fed antenna array is presented for millimeter-wave applications. A design scheme based on the optimized multistage phase cancellation with low complexity is investigated, which is able to weaken the undesirable in-phase superposition of small reflections in the array geometry, and thus significantly improving the achievable bandwidth of the large-scale array. The phase delay required for the proposed design method is obtained by introducing U-shaped bended waveguides in the feed network. Wideband 1 × 2 sub-arrays and E-plane waveguide T-junctions are also designed to build the array. A 16 × 16 array in the Ka-band is manufactured by employing metallic three-dimensional (3D) printing technology, which realizes excellent operating characteristics, including a bandwidth of 51.5%, a gain of up to 34.6 dBi, and stable unidirectional radiation patterns with cross polarization of less than -40 dB. The operating band of the proposed array covers multiple bands for 5G simultaneously, including n257, n258, n260 and n261. The proposed design method and antenna array would be attractive for emerging millimeter-wave applications.

Abstract:A terahertz band (0.1–10 THz) has the characteristics of rich spectrum resources, high transmission speed, strong penetration, and clear directionality. However, the terahertz signal will suffer serious attenuation and absorption during transmission. Therefore, a terahertz antenna with high gain, high efficiency, and wide bandwidth is an indispensable key component of terahertz wireless systems and has become a research hotspot in the field of antennas. In this paper, a high-gain broadband antenna is presented for terahertz applications. The antenna is a three-layer structure, fed by a grounded coplanar waveguide (GCPW), using polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) material as the dielectric substrate, and the metal through-hole of the dielectric substrate forms a substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) structure. The metal fence structure is introduced to reduce the coupling effect between the radiation patches and increase the radiation bandwidth and gain. The center frequency is 0.6366 THz, the operating bandwidth is 0.61–0.68 THz, the minimum value of the voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) is 1.00158, and the peak gain is 13.14 dBi. In addition, the performance of the designed antenna with a different isolation structure, the length of the connection line, the height of the substrate, the radius of the through-hole, and the thickness of the patch is also studied.

High-Gain Multi-Linear Polarization Reconfigurable Antenna in the Millimeter-Wave Band

Abstract:High-gain polarization-reconfigurable antennas in the millimeter-wave (mm-wave) band are of high importance for 5G and future wireless platforms. This paper reports an innovative mm-wave antenna that accomplishes multi-linear polarizations (LPs) with high gains. It employs a TM 510 -mode cavity etched with a circular slot array on its top surface as the base excitation. A two-layer copper-cladded main substrate is introduced above the base cavity to produce a high gain beam with a low cross-polarization level. Moreover, five reconfigurable LPs can be attained by rotating the main substrate at a 36° interval. Simulated characteristics were validated by measuring the prototyping multi-LP cavity-backed antenna. The measured overlapped −10-dB impedance bandwidth ranges from 28.58 to 28.99 GHz for the five LPs. Within this bandwidth, measured realized gains vary between 15.5 and 16.8 dBi.

Abstract:In this communication, a planar antenna array is proposed in millimeter-wave bands by using a modified bulk silicon micromachining technology. The proposed antenna array is designed and fabricated based on air-filled microstrip line structures. By periodically blocking the microstrip line, fringing electric fields along the microstrip lines are excited in phase, which contributes to achieving high gain performance with a relatively compact feeding structure. Moreover, the proposed antenna array is designed and fabricated by a modified bulk silicon micromachining technology. The process is quite suitable for designing low loss antennas in millimeter-wave bands. In the process, the silicon wafers are deeply etched and gold-plated. As a result, microstrip line structures in the proposed antenna array are filled with air medium, which mitigates dielectric loss and improves radiation efficiency. A prototype of the proposed antenna array is fabricated and tested to verify the design strategy. The dimension of the antenna array is 49.40 × 20.00 × 0.75 mm 3 . The simulated -10 dB bandwidth is 58.8-59.7 GHz and the measured bandwidth is 58.8-59.5 GHz. In the operating band, the maximum simulated gain of the proposed antenna is 19.8 dBi and the minimum simulated gain is 18.3 dBi. The measurement results illustrate that the maximum gain of the proposed antenna array is 18.8 dBi and the minimum gain is 17.0 dBi.

Abstract:A millimeter wave dual linearly polarized microstrip antenna array is proposed for ultra-wideband communications. To achieve the dual linear polarization, the microstrip antenna unit is fed by a two-port slit coupling. The bandwidth of the antenna is expanded by loading parasitic patches. By reasonably designing the feed network of the antenna array, the isolation is improved while realizing efficient feeding. The antenna achieves dual linearly polarized radiation at 33–37 GHz with a maximum gain of 11 dBi and more than 15 dB isolation.

Abstract:In this paper, a planar antenna structure‐based compact high gain wideband antenna array is presented for 5G millimeter wave applications. The proposed array uses a 1‐to‐8 power divider to feed eight antenna elements arranged linearly. To enhance the gain, multiple slits and I‐slots are placed on the ground plane and feeding network, respectively. To further improve the gain of the design, an L‐shaped metallic reflector is positioned at the optimum distance. With a large 10 dB bandwidth of 35.93% from 22.6 to 32.5 GHz, the proposed antenna array operates in the two 5G bands of 26 GHz and 28 GHz. The proposed antenna array’s measured gain varies from 9.18 to 13.22 dBi which is higher than the gain of 6.60–10.45 dBi of the unmodified array for the entire operating range. The antenna array shows a narrow beamwidth of 6.25° in its E ‐plane and radiates in end‐fire direction. The overall dimension of the proposed antenna array is 57 mm × 25.978 mm × 0.787 mm, which features a simple, compact design. This antenna can be used for millimeter wave application as it fulfills all the requirements of future 5G applications at 26 and 28 GHz bands.

Abstract:A novel substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) multibeam antenna based on the parabolic reflector principle is proposed and implemented at 37.5 GHz, which takes the advantages of low loss, low profile, high gain, and mass producible. A prototype of the proposed antenna with seven input ports generating a corresponding number of output beams is fabricated in a standard PCB process. The measurements are in good agreement with the simulations, and the results demonstrate that this type of printed multibeam antenna is a good choice for communications applications where mobility and high gain are simultaneously required.

Abstract:Antenna-in-Package has been widely applied for millimeter-wave systems that integrate the MMIC chip and antenna into one package. For organic substrate Antenna-in-Package solutions, probe feeding and aperture-coupled feeding patches are generally used as radiation units. In this work, a patch antenna is proposed using coupled resonation; a wideband, high-gain and compact 3-D antenna package integration is realized. Equivalent circuit model is analysed for the coupled structure. $\boldsymbol {\lambda }\mathrm {/\mathbf {4}}$ coupled line is adopted for impedance matching, the whole antenna is designed on the same thick radiation patch substrate, with less organic substrate lamination layers. For millimeter-wave Antenna-in-Package structures, vias are generally used for vertical interconnections, which function well in the lower millimeter-wave frequency range. For operation frequency higher than 100 GHz, design difficulties may be encountered for via interconnection, with performance degeneration on impedance matching and transmission loss. In our work a H-shaped slot is integrated instead of vias on an organic substrate, realizing a high frequency and wideband mm-wave transition. An interconnection structure is also adopted to convert a microstrip line to differential microstrip line in the feeding network. Antenna prototype with $2\times 4$ radiation array is designed for verification purpose at 20 GHz frequency range with simulated bandwidth of 23%. The prototype is fabricated with separate PCB boards assembled with screws; measured antenna gain is 12.7 dBi - 13.5 dBi. The proposed structure provides a wideband and low-loss solution for potential higher frequency mm-wave Antenna-in-Package applications.

Abstract:A simple and successful design for 1-D and 2-D multibeam antenna on a single substrate is presented at 30 GHz based on the eight-port hybrid. They can generate 4 beams in one plane and 2 x 2 beams in two orthogonal planes, respectively. Substrate integrated waveguide is applied in the construction of these circuits by normal printed circuit board process. The measurements demonstrate good performances of these on-substrate multibeam antennas. They also take the advantages of low loss, low cost, compact size, mass producibility, high reliability, and easily integration, which are very important in the development of millimeter-wave system-on-substrate.

Abstract:The design method of a high gain planar antenna element and array for Ku band applications was presented.The antenna is realized by stacking two substrate layers with coaxial cable and placing the top one quarter-wavelength from the lower one.This simple structure reduces the dimension markedly and has a good overall performance: wide band,high gain,and low backward radiation level.A 64-element array was optimized and successfully implemented.The measured results validate the design methods.This antenna has the potential application in satellite communication,microwave radio relay communication,WPAN,etc.

Abstract:In this paper, a planar high-gain millimeter-wave (mmW) slotted substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) cavity antenna array with low sidelobe and grating lobe levels is proposed. The antenna consists of a slotted SIW resonator and an SIW transmission line (TL). To achieve a high gain and simplify the structure of the antenna element, the slotted SIW cavity is resonated in high-order mode. Then, a high-gain antenna array is implemented with only four such elements. By analyzing the pattern multiplication principle of the antenna array and accurately adjusting the element spacing, the high grating lobe level caused by the large spacing of the high-order mode resonator is considerably reduced. In addition, a one-four unequal amplitude power divider is introduced to further reduce the antenna array's sidelobe levels (SLLs). Finally, the proposed antenna array is fabricated for verification. The measured peak gain is 21.4 dBi at 27.3 GHz. The measured grating lobe level in the E-plane is reduced to −17.9 dB, and the measured SLLs are lower than −19.1 dB.

Abstract:Significant advances in the development of millimeter-wave and terahertz (30-10 000 GHz) technologies have been made to cope with the increasing interest in this still not fully explored electromagnetic spectrum. The nature of electromagnetic waves over this frequency range is well suited for the development of high-resolution imaging applications, molecular-sensitive spectroscopic devices, and ultrabroadband wireless communications. In this paper, millimeter-wave and terahertz antenna technologies are overviewed including the conventional and nonconventional planar/nonplanar antenna structures based on different platforms. As a promising technological platform, substrate-integrated circuits (SICs) attract more and more attention. Various substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) schemes and other synthesized guide techniques have been widely employed in the design of antennas and arrays. Different types of substrate-integrated antennas and beamforming networks are discussed with respect to theoretical and experimental results in connection with electrical and mechanical performances.
