Abstract:This paper presents the design of a <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\mathrm{4} \times \mathrm{4}$</tex> elements circularly polarized microstrip patch array at millimeter-wave band. The sequential rotation method and series-parallel feed network are employed in the power distribution circuit for antenna performance improvement. The feed network is integrated on the same substrate layer of the antenna array in order to facilitate processing and manufacturing, and the total size of the design is <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\mathrm{10} \text{mm}\times \mathrm{12} \text{mm}\times \mathrm{0.127} \text{mm}$</tex> . The simulated return loss exhibits an impedance bandwidth of 7%, and the 3-dB axial ratio bandwidth of 10% with respect to 78.5 GHz is obtained. Besides, the maximal gain is 17.6dBi at 78.5GHz.

Abstract:This communication addresses the cost challenges with implementing high-gain antennas in the millimeter-wave band. The designed antenna exhibits a favorable broadband of 32.9% and achieves an aperture efficiency of up to 79.5%. This proposed array is constructed from five stacked layers of printed circuit boards (PCBs), with four layers composed of FR-4 boards. The idea of air filling is widely used in this design to mitigate high dielectric loss of FR-4 boards. The array adopts a sandwich construction approach to realize air-filled high-efficiency radiation cavities, with the radiation elements sandwiched by the feeding structure. The feeding structure utilizes a hybrid network that combines a substrate integrated gap waveguide (SIGW) and microstrip (MS) lines. The air-filled SIGW (AF-SIGW) is improved to minimize dielectric loss, and the MS lines are terminated with loads to broaden the bandwidth. Particularly, to the best of authors' knowledge, this is the first reported instance of AF-SIGW utilization for planar array design in the available literature. A prototype of an array is implemented and tested, showing a good agreement between simulations and measurements.

Abstract:We have developed a 1 times 4 wideband array structure for multiple wireless applications. The utilized single element is a wide-slot antenna and has demonstrated ultra-wideband operation characteristics. The proposed antenna system associated with feeding network and antenna elements can be integrated in a single substrate. Consequently, such a design is with low fabrication and assembly cost and compact size. The bandwidth of this wideband antenna array is from 2.0 GHz to 6.0 GHz and the radiation pattern is bidirectional. The performance of the antenna array is investigated both numerically and experimentally.

Abstract:Antenna-in-Package has been widely applied for millimeter-wave systems that integrate the MMIC chip and antenna into one package. For organic substrate Antenna-in-Package solutions, probe feeding and aperture-coupled feeding patches are generally used as radiation units. In this work, a patch antenna is proposed using coupled resonation; a wideband, high-gain and compact 3-D antenna package integration is realized. Equivalent circuit model is analysed for the coupled structure. $\boldsymbol {\lambda }\mathrm {/\mathbf {4}}$ coupled line is adopted for impedance matching, the whole antenna is designed on the same thick radiation patch substrate, with less organic substrate lamination layers. For millimeter-wave Antenna-in-Package structures, vias are generally used for vertical interconnections, which function well in the lower millimeter-wave frequency range. For operation frequency higher than 100 GHz, design difficulties may be encountered for via interconnection, with performance degeneration on impedance matching and transmission loss. In our work a H-shaped slot is integrated instead of vias on an organic substrate, realizing a high frequency and wideband mm-wave transition. An interconnection structure is also adopted to convert a microstrip line to differential microstrip line in the feeding network. Antenna prototype with $2\times 4$ radiation array is designed for verification purpose at 20 GHz frequency range with simulated bandwidth of 23%. The prototype is fabricated with separate PCB boards assembled with screws; measured antenna gain is 12.7 dBi - 13.5 dBi. The proposed structure provides a wideband and low-loss solution for potential higher frequency mm-wave Antenna-in-Package applications.

Abstract:A novel wideband high-gain air-filled waveguide fed antenna array is presented for millimeter-wave applications. A design scheme based on the optimized multistage phase cancellation with low complexity is investigated, which is able to weaken the undesirable in-phase superposition of small reflections in the array geometry, and thus significantly improving the achievable bandwidth of the large-scale array. The phase delay required for the proposed design method is obtained by introducing U-shaped bended waveguides in the feed network. Wideband 1 × 2 sub-arrays and E-plane waveguide T-junctions are also designed to build the array. A 16 × 16 array in the Ka-band is manufactured by employing metallic three-dimensional (3D) printing technology, which realizes excellent operating characteristics, including a bandwidth of 51.5%, a gain of up to 34.6 dBi, and stable unidirectional radiation patterns with cross polarization of less than -40 dB. The operating band of the proposed array covers multiple bands for 5G simultaneously, including n257, n258, n260 and n261. The proposed design method and antenna array would be attractive for emerging millimeter-wave applications.

Abstract:An innovative approach to designing millimeter-wave wideband high-gain large-scale antenna arrays is proposed with the use of waveguide T-junctions with multiple reflection nulls for building an H-type full-corporate feed network. By collaboratively optimizing the properties of the reflection nulls, the undesirable in-phase superposition of small reflections in the feed network can be weakened, thus improving the bandwidth of the array. The method of synthesizing wideband iris-loaded H-plane stepped waveguide T-junctions with three reflection nulls is investigated. A $16 \times 16$ horn array in the Ka-band is designed based on the presented approach and manufactured by employing metallic 3-D printing technology. Excellent performance, including a wide bandwidth of 48.4%, a gain of up to 34.5 dBi, and symmetrical and stable radiation patterns in both the E- and H-planes, are experimentally verified. This work is feasible and convenient for the implementation of high-gain wideband antenna arrays, which is valuable to emerging millimeter-wave applications.

Abstract:A ${W}$ -band large-scale substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) cavity-backed slot array for high-gain applications is presented in this communication. The proposed antenna consists of a compact 16-way power divider and a $32times33$ slot array. The 16-way power divider at the bottom-layer PCB provides equal-amplitude and alternative-phase excitation for 32 SIWs on the top layer PCB, and each of them supports 33 radiation slots. The loss along with the complexity of the feeding network is reduced by the implementation of alternative-phase excitation. To demonstrate the proposed slot array, a $4times 33$ slot array excited by a two-way power divider is designed first. Then, the $4times33$ slot array is extended to a $32times33$ slot array by a 16-way power divider. To verify the proposed slot array, the designed array is fabricated and measured. The measured peak gain, radiation, and aperture efficiencies are 30.88 dBi, 42%, and 22.8% at 93.2 GHz, respectively. The proposed high-gain antenna is an excellent candidate for the high-frequency millimeter-wave (mm-wave) wireless system.

Abstract:An electronically steerable dielectric helical antenna phased array for millimeter wave applications is designed in this paper. The phased array consists of three dielectric helical antenna units, a coaxial probe feed port and two grounding ports with tunable capacitor. Its center frequency is 29.7 GHz, effective axial ratio bandwidth is 660 MHz, peek gain is 10.3 dBi, radiation efficiency is over 90% In addition, the phased array has beam scanning function of +/- 20 degrees at the center frequency. The simulation results show that the electronically steerable phased dielectric helical antenna array can be used in millimeter wave wireless communication system.

Abstract:This paper introduces a novel, small-sized, highly integrated, circularly polarized wide-angle scanning antenna using substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) technology at millimeter-wave frequencies. The antenna unit addresses requirements for high data transmission rates, wide spatial coverage, and strong interference resistance in communication systems. By integrating radiating square waveguides, circular polarizers, filters, and matching loads, the antenna enhances out-of-band suppression, eliminates cross-polarization, and reduces manufacturing complexity and costs. Utilizing this antenna unit as a component, a 4 × 4 phased array antenna with a two-dimensional ±60° scanning capability is designed and simulated. The simulation and measurement results confirm that the phased array antenna achieves the desired scan range with a gain reduction of less than 3.9 dB.

Abstract:In this article, a millimeter-wave bidirectional active integrated coplanar waveguide slot antenna with ball grid array (BGA) interconnection is proposed. Symmetric multistage step impedance resonator matching network and tapered shaped structures are utilized to ultrawideband compensate the reactance behavior of the vertical BGA transition, which can be employed to reduce the interconnection length among different modules. By gradually changing the width of the semielliptic slot, an ultrawideband radiation behavior is achieved with a small impedance variation from one resonate mode to another. The proposed 1 $\times $ 4 passive antenna array can operate from 25 to 40 GHz with a gain of 13.1 dB. Compared with the conventional active integrated antenna structures, good advantages of wide bandwidth and high gain are obtained with the proposed technique. The prototype of the presented active antenna array is fabricated and measured with a wide impedance bandwidth of 29.1–40 GHz and can be more suitable for high-solution radar sensor.
Novel Broadband Reflectarray Antenna with Two-Type Elements for Millimeter-Wave Application

Abstract:A novel broadband millimeter-wave microstrip reflectarray antenna with square-annular patches and combined patches has been presented, aiming to solve the problem of how to obtain a full 360° range of phase shifts for single-layer. The choice of these two-type elements can make the phase shift smoother and increased up to 360°, leading to broader bandwidth. Based on this technique, a single-layer microstrip reflectarray antenna operating at 94 GHz has been designed. The computed results demonstrate the agreement of the main beam steering with the design requirement, and a 1-dB gain bandwidth close to 10% is obtained. The simulation results verify the feasibility of this design.

Abstract:In this paper, a planar antenna structure‐based compact high gain wideband antenna array is presented for 5G millimeter wave applications. The proposed array uses a 1‐to‐8 power divider to feed eight antenna elements arranged linearly. To enhance the gain, multiple slits and I‐slots are placed on the ground plane and feeding network, respectively. To further improve the gain of the design, an L‐shaped metallic reflector is positioned at the optimum distance. With a large 10 dB bandwidth of 35.93% from 22.6 to 32.5 GHz, the proposed antenna array operates in the two 5G bands of 26 GHz and 28 GHz. The proposed antenna array’s measured gain varies from 9.18 to 13.22 dBi which is higher than the gain of 6.60–10.45 dBi of the unmodified array for the entire operating range. The antenna array shows a narrow beamwidth of 6.25° in its E ‐plane and radiates in end‐fire direction. The overall dimension of the proposed antenna array is 57 mm × 25.978 mm × 0.787 mm, which features a simple, compact design. This antenna can be used for millimeter wave application as it fulfills all the requirements of future 5G applications at 26 and 28 GHz bands.

Abstract:<p>A broadband high‐gain slot grid array antenna (SGAA) is proposed in this paper. Based on the electromagnetic complementarity principle, the metal elements in the traditional microstrip grid array antenna (GAA) are replaced by a wide slot element. Compared with the GAA, the proposed SGAA achieves broadband and high‐gain performance. In order to demonstrate this concept, a prototype with 9‐element SGAA is designed using wide slot radiation elements and fabricated on Rogers 5880 printed circuit board (PCB) substrates, which is fed by a 50 Ω coaxial probe. The measured and simulated results show a good agreement. The proposed SGAA achieves a measured peak gain of 14.8 dBi at 26.0 GHz, a 10‐dB impedance bandwidth from 22.2 to 28.5 GHz with a fractional bandwidth of 24.9%. These results indicate that the SGAA is with high performance and it is suitable for the fifth‐generation (5G) millimeter wave (mmW) wireless communication system.</p>

Abstract:In this paper, a wide-band, low-profile antenna is presented for a high-integration phased array system. The proposed antenna, implemented using a tightly coupled array, operates over roughly the X-K frequency band and is performant at 8 GHz–18.5 GHz. The antenna can scan to ±60 degrees in both the E- and H-planes. Compared to previous tightly coupled antennas with smaller element spacing, the antenna in this paper reaches 9.4 mm, which corresponds to 0.58 λ of high frequency, suitable for engineering application conditions in production. The antenna can be soldered to BGA T/R chips in this space. Additionally, to facilitate flexible assembly for large arrays, the antenna is manufactured modularly using four elements and its parasitic radiation is analyzed. Then, a method for repressing parasitic radiation is presented. Finally, the antenna is fabricated and measured in a microwave chamber, exhibiting an excellent pattern and scanning radiation. The measured performance agrees with the full-wave finite array simulations.

Abstract:In this paper, a compact substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) cavity-backed slot antenna array with high gain, broadband, and dual-polarization performances is proposed for 60-GHz applications. An enhanced 17.1% impedance bandwidth was achieved by cutting semi-circle edges on the conventional slot radiator. A simplified SIW feed network is aperture-coupled vertically and constructed on a double-layered structure to implement the dual-polarization operation. By adopting innovative techniques on both radiating element and double-layered SIW feed networks, a high-gain, broadband, and dual-polarized 8 x 8 antenna array was designed on three-layered printed circuit board that allows for mass production. This configuration also resolves the trade-off between the bandwidth and gain of the existing 60-GHz dual-polarized antenna array. Its feasibility is proved by obtaining a measured gain in the range of 19.7-22.3 dB and an enhanced impedance bandwidth of 17.1% over 55.7-66.1 GHz for both horizontal and vertical polarizations. With advantages of high-gain, broadband, and dual-polarization performances in a low-cost low-profile structure, the proposed antenna array is a promising candidate for millimeter-wave wireless systems.

Abstract:A terahertz band (0.1–10 THz) has the characteristics of rich spectrum resources, high transmission speed, strong penetration, and clear directionality. However, the terahertz signal will suffer serious attenuation and absorption during transmission. Therefore, a terahertz antenna with high gain, high efficiency, and wide bandwidth is an indispensable key component of terahertz wireless systems and has become a research hotspot in the field of antennas. In this paper, a high-gain broadband antenna is presented for terahertz applications. The antenna is a three-layer structure, fed by a grounded coplanar waveguide (GCPW), using polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) material as the dielectric substrate, and the metal through-hole of the dielectric substrate forms a substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) structure. The metal fence structure is introduced to reduce the coupling effect between the radiation patches and increase the radiation bandwidth and gain. The center frequency is 0.6366 THz, the operating bandwidth is 0.61–0.68 THz, the minimum value of the voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) is 1.00158, and the peak gain is 13.14 dBi. In addition, the performance of the designed antenna with a different isolation structure, the length of the connection line, the height of the substrate, the radius of the through-hole, and the thickness of the patch is also studied.

Abstract:A novel millimeter-wave (mmWave) ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna covered from 24.25 GHz to 50 GHz is proposed in this letter. Different from previous broadband antennas that use a single resonant mode or radiating structure, the proposed antenna demonstrates a hybrid-mode resonance including microstrip line, slot, patches, and quasi-monopole modes with stable radiation patterns. The antenna is fed by a microstrip line with an open terminal, and the energy is coupled through the slot to the top patches, quasi-monopoles, and shorting strips. The overall thickness of the antenna element is only about 1 mm. An antenna element is designed, fabricated, and measured as verification. Measured results show that the proposed antenna can realize a -10 dB impedance fractional bandwidth (FBW) of more than 69.4%. The 3-dB gain bandwidth of the antenna element covers from 24.25 GHz to 47.9 GHz with a peak gain of 6.97 dBi. With the UWB, low profile, and stable radiation characteristics, the proposed antenna can be a good candidate for many mmWave applications, such as N258 (24.25 – 27.5 GHz), N257 (26.5 – 29.5 GHz), N260 (37 – 40 GHz), N259 (39.5 – 43.5 GHz) and IEEE802.11aj (42.3 – 48.4 GHz) .etc.

Abstract:This article presents a novel continuous transverse stub (CTS) array antenna based on gap waveguide (GW) technology, where all components are integrated within a multiple-layer stacked parallel plate GW (PPGW). Furthermore, a stepped pin electromagnetic band gap (EBG) unit is proposed to enable low-loss interconnection of stacked PPGW, thereby enhancing the bandwidth and efficiency of the entire array. This architecture offers a simple assembly solution for all-metal cooperate-feed CTS arrays. For experimental verification, a W-band 32-slot CTS array is designed based on the proposed architecture. Low sidelobe level (SLL) in both E- and H-planes is attained through the combined utilization of a nonuniform cooperate-feed network and pillbox beamformers. A prototype is manufactured and tested to validate its performance. The measured impedance bandwidth covers the entire W-Band (75–110 GHz, 37.8%), and the measured peak gain is 32.3 dBi at 110 GHz. SLL in both E- and H-planes remains below −18.5 dB across the entire operating band. Furthermore, the mean radiation efficiency stands at 76.3%. The proposed architecture and design methodology are well-suited for broadband, high-efficiency, and large-scale array antennas at a low cost, which particularly appeals to upper millimeter-wave applications.

Abstract:This communication presents a dual-band aperture-shared high gain antenna for millimeter-wave (mm-wave) multi-beam and sub-6 GHz applications by integrating transmitarray into Fresnel zone plate (FZP) lens. The transmistarray consists of two sets of unit cells (UCs), which can provide high transmission magnitude and [$-\pi $ , $\pi $ ] phase tuning at the mm-wave frequency band. Meanwhile, they show distinct transmission features at the sub-6 GHz band (one set of UC allows the electromagnetic (EM) wave to pass while the other prohibits the EM wave from passing). Then, by properly arranging the two kinds of UCs into the transparent and opaque region of the FZP lens respectively, the sub-6 GHz FZP lens and the mm-waveband transmitarray are integrated into the same aperture seamlessly. A waveguide-integrated patch antenna is adopted as the feed. The patch antenna operates at the sub-6 GHz band and three open waveguide antennas are used for the mm-wave multi-beam radiation. The proposed antenna achieves high gain at both bands with a reused radiating aperture. Mm-wave multi-beam radiation is obtained without an extra feeding network. For demonstration purposes, the central frequencies of the sub-6 GHz and the mm-wave bands are selected at 6 and 27 GHz, respectively. An antenna prototype is fabricated and experimentally verified.

Abstract:In this communication, a planar antenna array is proposed in millimeter-wave bands by using a modified bulk silicon micromachining technology. The proposed antenna array is designed and fabricated based on air-filled microstrip line structures. By periodically blocking the microstrip line, fringing electric fields along the microstrip lines are excited in phase, which contributes to achieving high gain performance with a relatively compact feeding structure. Moreover, the proposed antenna array is designed and fabricated by a modified bulk silicon micromachining technology. The process is quite suitable for designing low loss antennas in millimeter-wave bands. In the process, the silicon wafers are deeply etched and gold-plated. As a result, microstrip line structures in the proposed antenna array are filled with air medium, which mitigates dielectric loss and improves radiation efficiency. A prototype of the proposed antenna array is fabricated and tested to verify the design strategy. The dimension of the antenna array is 49.40 × 20.00 × 0.75 mm 3 . The simulated -10 dB bandwidth is 58.8-59.7 GHz and the measured bandwidth is 58.8-59.5 GHz. In the operating band, the maximum simulated gain of the proposed antenna is 19.8 dBi and the minimum simulated gain is 18.3 dBi. The measurement results illustrate that the maximum gain of the proposed antenna array is 18.8 dBi and the minimum gain is 17.0 dBi.
