Abstract:The N boolean AND N boolean AND N-tridentatc metal complexes, LMCl2 (M = Fe or Co; L represents a ligand of 2-(benzimidazol-2-yl)-l, 10-phenanthrolines), were synthesized and fully characterized with spectroscopic and elemental analysis. The single-crystal X-ray crystallographic analyses revealed complex 1a with a distorted octahedron geometry due to incorporating one methanol molecule, and complexes 5a and 9b with a distorted trigonal-bipyramidal geometry. Upon activation with modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO), these complexes showed good to high catalytic activities toward ethylene oligomerization. The detailed investigations were carried out to disclose the influences of various reaction conditions and nature of ligands on their performing activities of metal complexes. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:A family of rare earth metal bis(amide) complexes bearing monoanionic amidinate [RC(N-2,6-Me(2)C(6)H(3))(2)](-) (R = cyclohexyl (Cy), phenyl (Ph)) as ancillary ligands were synthesized and characterized. One-pot salt metathesis reaction of anhydrous LnCl(3) with one equivalent of amidinate lithium [RC(N-2,6-Me(2)C(6)H(3))(2)]Li, following the introduction of two equivalents of NaN(SiMe(3))(2) in THF at room temperature afforded the neutral and unsolvated mono(amidinate) rare earth metal bis(amide) complexes [RC(N-2,6-Me(2)C(6)H(3))(2)]Y[N(SiMe(3))(2)](2) (R = Cy (1); R = Ph (2)), and the "ate" mono(amidinate) rare earth metal bis(amide) complex [CyC(N-2,6-Me(2)C(6)H(3))(2)]Lu[N(SiMe(3))(2)](2)(μ-Cl)Li(THF)(3) (3) in 61-72% isolated yields. These complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, NMR spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, and X-ray single crystal diffraction. Single crystal structural determination revealed that the central metal in complexes 1 and 2 adopts a distorted tetrahedral geometry, and in complex 3 forms a distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry. In the presence of AlMe(3), and in combination with one equimolar amount of [Ph(3)C][B(C(6)F(5))(4)], complexes 1 and 2 showed high activity towards isoprene polymerization to give high molecular weight polyisoprene (M(n) > 10(4)) with good cis-1,4 selectivity (>90%).

Abstract:Three new patterns of reactivity of rare-earth metal methylidene complexes have been established and thus have resulted in access to a wide variety of imido rare-earth metal complexes [L3Ln3(μ2-Me)3(μ3-Me)(μ-NR)] (L = [PhC(NC6H3iPr2-2,6)2](-); R = Ph, Ln = Y (2 a), Lu (2 b); R = 2,6-Me2C6H3, Ln = Y (3 a), Lu (3 b); R = p-ClC6H4, Ln = Y (4 a), Lu (4 b); R = p-MeOC6H4, Ln = Y (5 a), Lu (5 b); R = Me2CHCH2CH2, Ln = Y (6 a), Lu (6 b)) and [{L3Lu3(μ2-Me)3(μ3-Me)}2(μ-NR'N)] (R' = (CH2)6 (7 b), (C6H4)2 (8 b)). Complex 2 b was treated with an excess of CO2 to give the corresponding carboxylate complex [L3Lu3(μ-η(1):η(1)-O2CCH3)3(μ-η(1):η(2)-O2C-CH3)(μ-η(1):η(1):η(2)-O2CNPh)] (9 b) easily. Complex 2 a could undergo the selective μ3-Me abstraction reaction with phenyl acetylene to give the mixed imido/alkynide complex [L3Y3(μ2-Me)3(μ3-η(1):η(1):η(3)-NPh)(μ3-C≡CPh)] (10 a) in high yield. Treatment of 2 with one equivalent of thiophenol gave the selective μ3-methyl-abstracted products [L3Ln3(μ2-Me)3(μ3-η(1):η(1):η(3)-NPh)(μ3-SPh)] (Ln = Y (11 a); Lu (11 b). All new complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, NMR spectroscopy, and most of the structures confirmed by X-ray diffraction.

Abstract:The rare-earth metal dialkyl complexes ( κ 2 -L 1 )RE(CH 2 SiMe 3 ) 2 (THF) 2 [RE = Lu( 1a ), Yb( 1b ), Er( 1c ), Y( 1d ), Dy( 1e )] ( L 1 = 1-(2-N-C 5 H 10 NCH 2 CH 2 )-3-(2,6- i Pr 2 C 6 H 3 N=CH)-C 8 H 4 N) and the rare-earth metal monoalkyl complexes ( κ 2 - L 1 ) 2 RE(CH 2 SiMe 3 )(THF) n [n = 0, RE = Lu( 2a ), Yb( 2b ); n = 1, Er( 2c ), Y( 2d ), Dy( 2e )], ( κ 2 - L 2 ) 2 RE(CH 2 SiMe 3 )(THF) [RE = Yb( 3a ), Er( 3b ), Y( 3c ), Dy( 3d ), Gd( 3e )] ( L 2 = 1-(2-N-C 5 H 10 NCH 2 CH 2 )-3-(AdN=CH)-C 8 H 4 N) (Ad = adamantyl, C 10 H 15 ) have been synthesized and fully characterized. These complexes features chelate ligands having a conjugated system (-C=C-C=N) with an sp 2 carbon with an sp2 carbon, which enables both electrophilic and nucleophilic carbon centres to be directly connected to the highly electrophilic rare-earth metal ions. The reactions of these complexes with different pyridine derivatives have been systematically investigated with the discovery of reactivity patterns distinct from those of previously reported transition metal complexes. These unusual reactivity patterns include consecutive C-H activation/1,1-migratory insertion/C-N and C-H activation, C-H activation/1,1-migratory insertion/C-N bond activation, C-H activation/1,1-migratory insertion, and homolytic redox reactions. DFT calculations results together with experimental evidences support the key mechanistic proposal that the indol-2-yl carbon of the ligands exhibits electrophilic carbene character accounting for the subsequent 1,1-migratory insertion reaction after C-H activation.

Syntheses, Structures, and Reactivities of Homometallic Rare-Earth-Metal Multimethyl Methylidene and Oxo Complexes

Abstract:Unsolvated, trinuclear, homometallic, rare-earth-metal multimethyl methylidene complexes [{(NCN)Ln(mu(2)-CH3)}(3)(mu(3)-CH3)(mu(3)-CH2)] (NCN=L=[PhC{NC6H4(iPr-2,6)(2)}(2)](-); Ln=Sc (2a), Lu (2b)) have been synthesized by treatment of [(L)Ln{CH2C6H4N(CH3)(2)-o}(2)] (Ln=Sc (1a), Lu (1b)) with two equivalents of AlMe3 in toluene at ambient temperature in good yields. Treatment of 1 with three equivalents of AlMe3 gives the heterometallic trinuclear complexes [(L)Ln (AlMe4)(2)] (Ln=Sc (3a), Lu (3b)) in good yields. Interestingly, 2 can also be generated by recrystallization of 3 in THF/toluene, thereby indicating that the THF molecule can also induce C-H bond activation of 2. Reaction of 2 with one equivalent of ketones affords the trinuclear homometallic oxo trimethyl complexes [{(L)Ln-(mu(2)-CH3)}(3)(mu(3)-CH3)(mu(3)-O)] (Ln=Sc-(4a), Lu(4b)) in high yields. Complex 4b reacts with one equivalent of cyclohexanone to give the methyl abstraction product [{(L)Lu(mu(2)-CH3)}(3)(mu(3)-OC6H9)(mu(3)-O)] (5b), whereas reaction of 4b with acetophenone forms the insertion product [{(L)Lu(mu(2)-CH3)}(3){mu(3)-OCPh(CH3)(2)}(mu(3)-O)] (6b). Complex 4a is inert to ketone under the same conditions. All these new complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, NMR spectroscopy, and confirmed by X-ray diffraction determination.

Abstract:Synthesis and structural characterization of half-sandwich rare-earth metal tris(trimethylsilylmethyl) anionic complexes bearing one 1-phenyl-2,3,4,5-tetrapropylc-yclopentadienyl ligand are achieved. These soluble anionic compounds show good reactivity in the stoichiometric reaction with dibenzoylmethane (DBM) to give the salt-free half-sandwich complex bearing two chelate DBM ligands. More importantly, they can serve as excellent and general catalyst precursors for the addition of different types of amines including primary aromatic amines (ArNH2), acyclic (RR'NH, ArRNH, and ArAr'NH; R, R' = Alkyl group, Ar, Ar' = Aromatic group), or cyclic secondary aliphatic amines to carbodiimides yielding efficiently guanidines. Acyclic secondary amines of the general formula ArAr'NH and ArRNH cannot be achieved efficiently by the previous rare-earth catalysts because of their weak nucleophilicity and steric hindrance. Our results show clearly the reactivities of anionic trialkyl precursors are comparable with the corresponding neutral alkyl complex in the stoichimetric reaction but exhibit better catalytic activity than the known catalysts.
Synthesis and Characterization of Dinuclear Rare Earth Complexes Bearing N-heterocyclic Olefin Moieties

Abstract:The oxygen-bridged dinuclear rare earth complexes (Ln = Nd (1), Y (2)) bearing N-heterocyclic olefin moieties were synthesized by treating the imidazolidinium salt [SIMes-H]Br with potassium amide and rare earth bis(trimethylsilyl)amides. Complex 1 was characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis and complex 2 was characterized by H-1 NMR spectroscopy. Both complexes were characterized by elemental analysis. Crystal data of complex 1: C74H138O2N8Si8Nd2, M-r = 1685.12, orthorhombic, space group Pbca, a = 25.1105(7), b = 11.9188(2), c = 29.6151(7) angstrom, V= 8863.4(4) angstrom(3), Z = 4, D-c = 1.263 g.cm(-3), mu = 1.311 mm(-1), F(000) = 3544, the final R = 0.0418 and wR = 0.0770 for all data. The ring-opening of tetrahydrofuran molecule was proven, the possible mechanism for the formation of N-heterocyclic olefin (NHO)-rare earth complexes was speculated and the electronic and steric properties of SIMes and rare earth amides were discussed. This work provides a better understanding of N-heterocyclic carbene rare earth chemistry.
C-H Acidity and Arene Nucleophilicity As Orthogonal Control of Chemoselectivity in Dual C-H Bond Activation

Abstract:We discovered a cooperative gold/silver catalysis mechanism in the oxidative cross-coupling reaction between 1,2,4,5-tetrafluorobenzene and N-TIPS-indole, using DFT calculations. A silver(I)-catalyzed CMD mechanism is responsible for the C-H activation of 1,2,4,5-tetrafluorobenzene, and C-H acidity determines the chemoselectivity. A gold(III)-catalyzed S(E)2Ar mechanism is responsible for the C3-H activation of N-TIPS-indole, and arene nucleophilicity determines the chemo- and regioselectivity. The orthogonal chemoselectivity control provides a mechanistic guide for dual C-H activation reactions.

Abstract:Two monoguanidinate rare‐earth metal aminobenzyl enolate complexes LRE(CH2C6H4NMe2‐o)(OCH=CH2)(THF) (L = (PhCH2)2NC(NC6H3iPr2‐2,6)2; RE = Y (1a), Lu (1b)) were synthesized via two pathways of the ring‐opening of THF, and their reactivities with some molecules were also explored. Reaction of complex 1a with iPrNCNiPr gave the insertion product LY[(NiPr2)2CCH2C6H4NMe2‐o](OCH=CH2)(THF) (2). Whereas, in the case of PhNCS, LY[SC(CH2C6H4NMe2‐o)NPh](OCH=CH2)(THF) (3) and the ligands redistribution binuclear yttrium enolate complex [LY(µ‐OCH=CH2)(OCH=CH2)]2 (4) were obtained. The protonolysis products LY(NHPh)(OCH=CH2)(THF)2 (5), LY(NHPh)2(THF)2 (6) and LY(NPh2)(OCH=CH2)(THF)2 (7) were achieved by reaction of 1a with arylamine. Moreover, the THF ring‐opening insertion products with unique structures {LY[O(CH2)4PPh2][µ‐O(CH2)4PPh2]}2 (8) and {LY(SCH2C6H4NMe2‐o)[µ‐O(CH2)4SCH2C6H4NMe2‐o]}2 (9) were afforded through reactions of complex 1a with diphenylphosphine and elemental sulfur. It was the first example of THF activation promoted by rare‐earth metal thiolate complex. And some interesting chemical transformations were observed in our work. Complexes 1 could also serve as efficient initiators in the ring‐opening polymerization of rac‐lactide.

Abstract:Two new trinuclear (3)-bridged rare-earth metal phosphinidene complexes, [{L(Ln)(-Me)}(3)((3)-Me)((3)-PPh)] (L=[PhC(NC(6)H(4)iPr(2)-2,6)(2)](-), Ln=Y (2a), Lu (2b)), were synthesized through methane elimination of the corresponding carbene precursors with phenylphosphine. Heating a toluene solution of 2 at 120 degrees C leads to an unprecedented orthoCH bond activation of the PhP ligand to form the bridged phosphinidene/phenyl complexes. Reactions of 2 with ketones, thione, or isothiocyanate show clear phospha-Wittig chemistry, giving the corresponding organic phosphinidenation products and oxide (sulfide) complexes. Reaction of 2 with CS2 leads to the formation of novel trinuclear rare-earth metal thione dianion clusters, for which a possible pathway was determined by DFT calculation.

Abstract:The preferential substitution of oxo ligands over alkyl ones of rare-earth complexes is commonly considered as "impossible" due to the high oxophilicity of metal centers. Now, it has been shown that simply assembling mixed methyl/oxo rare-earth complexes to a rigid trinuclear cluster framework cannot only enhance the activity of the Ln-oxo bond, but also protect the highly reactive Ln-alkyl bond, thus providing a previously unrecognized opportunity to selectively manipulate the oxo ligand in the presence of numerous reactive functionalities. Such trimetallic cluster has proved to be a suitable platform for developing the unprecedented non-redox rare-earth-mediated oxygen atom transfer from ketones to CS2 and PhNCS. Controlled experiments and computational studies shed light on the driving force for these reactions, emphasizing the importance of the sterical accessibility and multimetallic effect of the cluster framework in promoting reversal of reactivity of rare-earth oxo complexes.

Abstract:Palladium, iridium, and rhodium complexes of 2-methyleneimidazolines have been synthesized by selective phosphine-assisted activation of the 2-methyl C-H bonds in 2-methylimidazolium compounds. Metallacycles of various sizes were obtained in the reaction of phosphine-tethered 2-methylimidazolium compounds and [{M(cod)X}(2)] (M = Rh or Ir; cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene; X = alkoxyl or Cl). Representative complexes were characterized by X-ray crystallography. The selectivity for aliphatic C(sp(3))H versus aromatic C(sp(2))H activation could be adjusted by means of the steric bulk of the OR ligand, whereby a bulky OR group favors activation of the 2-methyl C(sp(3))-H bond. Experimental results confirmed that a methyl C-H activation product (a seven-membered iridacycle) is the kinetic product, while the aryl C-H activation product (a six-membered iridacycle) is the thermodynamic product.

Abstract:A series of phenylenediamidinate rare earth metal complexes 1,4-C6H4[C(NR)(2)Ln(o-CH2C6H4NMe2)(2)](2) (R = 2,6-Pr-i(2)-C6H3, Ln = Y (2a), Lu (2b), Sc (2c)) were synthesized by deprotonation of 1,4-C6H4[C(NR)(NHR)](2) (1) with two equivalents of n-BuLi followed by reacting with two equivalents of anhydrous LnCl(3) and subsequently four equivalents of Li(o-CH2C6H4NMe2), or by protolysis of [Ln(o-CH2C6H4NMe2)(3)] with 0.5 equivalent of 1 in THF or toluene. Treatment of complexes 2a and 2b with four equivalents of phenyl isocyanate and phenyl isothiocyanate gave the corresponding insertion products 1,4-C6H4[C(NR)(2)Ln{OC(CH2C6H4NMe2-o)NPh}(2)(THF)](2) (Ln = Y (3a), Lu (3b)) and 1,4-C6H4[C(NR)(2)Ln{SC(CH2C6H4NMe2-o)NPh}(2)](2) (Ln = Y (4a), Lu (4b)), respectively. The structures of 1, 3b, and 4a were established by X-ray diffraction studies. Complexes 2 show high activity for rac-lactide and e-caprolactone polymerization; for the former a synergistic effect between two metal centers is observed.

Abstract:While the reductive coupling of two nitriles mediated by transition metals has been widely studied in the past ten years, the analogous process promoted by rare-earth metals remains elusive. Herein, we report the selective C-C coupling of two nitriles by rare-earth metal reduced naphthalene complexes to assemble the first authentic rare-earth diazametallacyclopentadienes. Mechanistic studies reveal that the reaction proceeds through the insertion-release-insertion sequence, which is different from the known oxidative cyclometallation process for transition metals. This provides an alternative mechanism for metal-mediated reductive coupling of two nitriles. Furthermore, reactivity investigation indicates that diazascandacyclopentadiene exhibits distinct 1,4-hydrogenation and insertion reactions toward H-2, isothiocyanate, isocyanide, and W(CO)(6) to give diversified rare-earth metallacycles. These results indicate that rare-earth diazametallacyclopentadienes present unique chemistry, which is different from that of group 4 diazametallacyclopentadienes.

Abstract:Herein, an unprecedented bimetallic bis-NHC Cp*Ir complex 1 bearing 2-arylbenzo[d]oxazolyl and NHC ligands is reported. A significant increase in activity was observed for N-methylation of amines and reduction of aldehydes with MeOH catalyzed by 1 compared to the monometallic analogues (2-11). Under the optimal conditions, it showed to be highly effective in N-methylation of nitroarenes with MeOH as both Cl and H-2 source. Substrates, including aromatic amines, ketones, and nitro compounds with various functional groups, can be well-tolerated. Mechanistic studies and DFT calculation highlight the significance of bimetallic centers cooperativity.
