Abstract:Bisphenol A (BPA) is the main precursor in the synthesis of epoxy resins. However, because of its toxic and nonrenewable nature, BPA is unsuitable in the sustainable preparation of epoxy resins. In contrast, Diphenolic acid (DPA) is renewable but its carboxyl group limits its applications in bio-based thermosets. In this study, we report a novel amidation route to tailor DPA to produce epoxide monomers that present epoxy resins with a high performance. The diphenolic amides exhibited very low toxicities when compared with that of BPA, and also provided an unexpected autocatalytic effect on the curing reactions when succinic anhydride (SA) was used as the hardener. Dynamic mechanical analyses (DMA) and tensile test results confirmed the remarkable thermo-mechanical properties of the cured epoxy resins, which may be attributed to the increased cross-linking density and enhanced hydrogen bonding by the amide groups. Among the SA-cured epoxy resins, diglycidyl ether of diphenolic ethylamide exhibited the best performance, which included a high T-g of 114 ?degrees C, char yield (CY) of 20%, tensile strength of 60.2 MPa, and toughness value of 185 MPa. In addition, the DPA-derived epoxy resins have great potential in the preparation of bio-based composites because they act as excellent interfaces between the resin and cotton fibers (CoFs). Our study presents a new strategy to prepare bio-based epoxy resins with a high performance, emphasizing the greater potential of amidated DPA derivatives to replace BPA in the epoxy resin market.
Diphenolic Acid-Derived Hyperbranched Epoxy Thermosets with High Mechanical Strength and Toughness

Abstract:Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) is a kind of widely used epoxy resin, but its thermosets normally show high brittleness and poor impact resistance due to the intrinsic rigid aromatic rings, which limit its application greatly. To avoid this drawback, we proposed a method to prepare a series of hyperbranched epoxies (HBEPs) with different molecular weights. After HBEPs were cured with methyl tetrahydrophthalic anhydride (MTHPA), characterizations were carried out to evaluate the properties of the cured HBEP samples. Testing results indicate that the hyperbranched thermosets can achieve excellent mechanical strength and toughness (tensile strength: 89.2 MPa, bending strength: 129.6 MPa, elongation at break: 6.1%, toughness: 4.5 MJ m-3, and impact strength: 6.7 kJ m-2), which are superior to those of the thermosets of commercial DGEBA (tensile strength: 81.2 MPa, bending strength: 108.2 MPa, elongation at break: 3.0%, toughness: 1.5 MJ m-3, and impact strength: 4.2 kJ m-2). In addition, HBEP with the highest molecular weight and degree of branching shows the best comprehensive mechanical properties. All hyperbranched thermosets exhibit high glass-transition temperatures (T g) and thermostability, which further illustrates the potential application value of HBEPs.
Mixed Hyperbranched Poly(aryl Ether Ketone) Results in High Toughness and Excellent Thermal Resistance in Epoxy Resin

Abstract:Epoxy resins are well used in many fields, but their problem of poor toughness restricts the further expansion of their applications. Facing this problem, this study successfully prepared high toughness epoxy resins using hydroxyl-terminated hyperbranched poly(aryl ether ketone) (HBPAEK-OH) as a toughening agent. Firstly, HBPAEK-OH was synthesized based on molecular structure design, combined with the optimized conditions of heat resistance and solubility. Then HBPAEK-OH was mixed with bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (DGEBA) to prepare a series of epoxy resins (HBP/DGEBA-n) with superior thermal properties, whose glass transition temperature (Tg) can reach 113.9 degrees C, which is about 38 degrees C higher than that of HBP/DGEBA-0. The tensile strength, flexural strength, impact strength, and elongation at break of HBP/DGEBA-n showed a tendency to increase and then decrease with the increase of HBPAEK-OH content, and the highest values reached 86.43 MPa, 128.50 MPa, 57.03 kJ/m2, and 7.15 %, respectively. Among them, the impact strength and elongation at break increased by 179.3 % and 87.2 %, indicating that the toughness of HBP/DGEBA-n was significantly improved. This study explores a new method for toughening epoxy resins, which improves their toughness and heat-resistant properties and provides new possibilities for their expansion in different applications.

Abstract:ABSTRACTIn some applications, homopolymerized epoxies, which offer better biocompatibility and lower water absorption than amine‐ and anhydride‐cured epoxy, are more preferable; however, using homopolymerized epoxy as matrix in composites still remains a challenge. Herein, homopolymerized bisphenol A diglycidyl ether curing systems with simultaneously improved tensile strength, impact strength, and glass transition temperature (Tg) were achieved by addition of small amounts of tetra‐functional epoxies (TFTEs) with different spacer lengths. Effects of spacer length in TFTE on thermal and mechanical properties were investigated. Results indicated that TFTE with the longest spacer length shows the best mechanical performance. In addition, effects of TFTE loading on thermal and mechanical properties were discussed. Compared with neat bisphenol A diglycidyl ether, addition of 5% tetraglycidyl‐1,10‐bis(triphenylmethane) decane leads to simultaneous improvements in tensile strength, impact strength, and Tg. Effects of thermal cycling on the mechanical properties were also reported. Results suggest that the modified homopolymerized epoxy shows good performances and could be used as matrix materials and possibly in some dental applications. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Abstract:Hyperbranched epoxy resin (HERs) have attracted increasing attention from scientists and engineers, due to their excellent functionalities in homogenously reinforcing and toughening diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) without phase separation. However, it remains a great challenge to control the topological structures of HERs and to discover the effect of microstructure on the properties of epoxy resins. Here, we report the synthesis of NP skeleton epoxy hyperbranched polymer (NMHEP-n) with a controllable degree of branching (DB) and topological structures by a thiol-ene click reaction. The DB of NMHEP-n can be tuned readily with a ratio of designed branched and linear monomers from 0 to 1.0, which can determine the topological structure from linear rod-like chains to ellipsoidal, further to spherical molecular chains. With the increase of DB from 0 to 1.0, a root-mean-square z-average radius of gyration (R g ), hydrodynamic radius (R h ) and shape factor (ρ = R g/R h) decrease, being an agreement with the variation from linear to spherical shape. Performance of NMHEP-n/DGEBA composites, including cold resistance, tensile, flexural, and impact strengths, are significantly improved with an increase in DB and content, and the maximum value appears at 12 wt% NMHEP-0.5 in composites. The simultaneous improvement on various properties is attributed to a homogeneous reinforcing and toughening mechanism, which can be rationalized and substantiated by DMA, AFM, SEM, and Raman techniques. These results render an applicable approach to prepare high-performance thermosets and composites.

Abstract:In this work, a novel hyperbranched poly (urethane-phosphine oxide) (HPUPO) was facilely synthesized from 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate and trihydroxymethylphosphine oxide at room temperature. When HPUPO was incorporated, flame retardancy and toughness of epoxy resin are improved with maintained Tg and increased modulus and strength. The gas and condensed phase flame retardant mechanisms and toughening mechanisms are provided. The poor compatibility of epoxy resin/HPUPO hybrids determines the unchanged Tg of epoxy matrix phase. The tensile modulus and strength and storage modulus of modified epoxy thermosets are raised due to more rigid skeleton of HPUPO and hydrogen bond interaction. Moreover, the reactivity of epoxy resin curing systems containing HPUPO is elevated for the catalytic effect of its hydroxyl. The surface hydrophilicity of epoxy resin composites is decreased resulting from their increased surface roughness and the hydrophobicity of HPUPO. And the thermal decomposition temperature of epoxy resin hybrids is depressed. The epoxy resins modified by HPUPO with simple synthesis and preparation can be used for various high-performance applications in industries.
A hydroxyl-containing hyperbranched polymer as a multi-purpose modifier for a dental epoxy

Abstract:Despite the high cure shrinkage, inadequate degree of cure, and toxicity, dimethacrylate dental resins have remained the dominant matrices for dental composites. Bisphenol-A free cycloaliphatic epoxy resins have lower shrinkages due to the ring-opening nature; however, its mechanical strength needs to be improved. In order to reduce cure shrinkage and toxicity simultaneously improve mechanical strength, which has long been a challenge, a hydroxyl-containing hyperbranched polymer (HBP-OH) was synthesized and used as a multi-purpose modifier for a cycloaliphatic dental epoxy system. Results show that cure shrinkage of neat dental epoxy (3.46%) is about half of that of the dimethacrylate dental resin (7.65%); HBP-OH modified epoxy further reduces shrinkage to ca. 2%. Addition of HBP-OH also reduces cytotoxicity and increases the flexural strength. Addition of 7 wt% HBP-OH increases the flexural strength of the dental epoxy from 90.8 to 109.8 MPa. In addition, effects of HBP-OH addition on the reactivity, glass transition temperature, and water uptake were also reported. Results suggest that HBP-OH shows great potentials as a multi-purpose modifier for dental epoxy resins.
Biobased Epoxy Resin with Low Electrical Permissivity and Flame Retardancy: From Environmental Friendly High-Throughput Synthesis to Properties

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed significant advances in biobased epoxy resins to replace their petroleum-based counterparts, especially diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A type epoxy resin (DGEBA). However, for meeting a great variety of the requirements, long-standing challenges include environmentally friendly preparation of epoxy resin with few toxic byproducts and improving their properties. Herein, we report a facile method to synthesize new silicone-bridged difunctional epoxy monomers in high yield. They are derived from naturally occurring eugenol by introducing the methylsiloxane and phenylsiloxane linkers of different chain lengths into their molecular backbones. These synthesized liquid epoxy monomers have definitive molecular structure with high purity. These silicone-bridged difunctional epoxy monomers exhibit much lower viscosity (<2.5 Pa s) than commercial DGEBA epoxy (10.7 Pa s) suitable for composites and prepregs. After curing, they exhibit a dielectric permittivity as low as 2.8 and good intrinsic flame retardancy with LOI value higher than 31, far outperforming DGEBA. All these advantages are stemmed from their siloxane-contained segments characterized by low polarity, very high dissociation energy, helical molecular structure, and high molecular volume. Overall, this work provides a very facile and scalable route access to a family of the multifunctional eugenol-based epoxy monomers with low dielectric constant and enhanced flame retardancy.

Constructing nano SiO2‐anchored hyperbranched polymer hybrid architectures for thermosetting epoxy systems with outstanding mechanical property

Abstract:A hybrid architecture system was prepared via in situ formation of SiO2 nanoparticles in the cavities of COOH‐terminated hyperbranched aromatic polyester. The hybrid system could endow epoxy resins with outstanding mechanical property. A hybrid architecture system was developed via in situ formation of SiO2 nanoparticles in the cavities of COOH‐terminated hyperbranched aromatic polyester (CHBPE). Results show that SiO2 nanoparticles can be successfully anchored in the cavities of CHBPE owing to the hyperbranched structure of CHBPE. The resulting CHBPE‐SiO2 system is applied to epoxy (EP) resins using 4,4′‐diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) as curing agent. Because –COOH groups in CHBPE‐SiO2 system can react with epoxy groups, the conversion of epoxy groups in EP/CHBPE‐SiO2 systems can be improved, and the strong interface interaction between EP matrix and CHBPE‐SiO2 can be realized. The resulting EP/CHBPE‐SiO2 composites have excellent mechanical property. When the contents of CHBPE‐SiO2 are 8%–20%, the impact strengths, the flexural strengths and the tensile strengths of EP/CHBPE‐SiO2 composites can reach 24–46 kJ/m2, 121–165 MPa and 57–71 MPa, respectively, which are 16.1–31.9‐fold, 4.0–5.9‐fold and 8.9–11.3‐fold higher than those of pure EP, respectively. EP/16%CHBPE‐SiO2 composites have the optimal comprehensive mechanical property. The initial thermal decomposition temperature at 5 wt% weight loss (Tdi) and glass‐transition temperature (Tg) of EP composites can increase by 70–84°C and 30–43°C, respectively, after introducing 8%–20% CHBPE‐SiO2. Moreover, the dielectric constants of EP composites with 8%–20% CHBPE‐SiO2 decrease by 3%–11% as compared to pure EP. The high dispersion of SiO2 in EP/CHBPE‐SiO2 composite and the strong interface interaction between EP matrix and CHBPE‐SiO2 can contribute to the outstanding comprehensive property of EP/CHBPE‐SiO2 composite.

Abstract:The combination of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets and polymer matrix provides an opportunity to synthesize polymer composites with excellent engineering application performance. However, the preparation of high-performance GO-based composites is difficult because the nano-scaled GO is easily agglomerated, and the weak interface bonding force between the GO and polymer. Herein, a simple and effective method for preparing GO-based composites via hyperbranched polymer (HPB) grafting is presented. The resulting HPB-GO has uniformly dispersed in the epoxy resin (EP) matrix and combines with the matrix through chemical bonds, which has a strong interfacial acting force and improves the load transfer efficiency of the matrix to HPB-GO. Thus, the resultant EP/HPB-GO nanocomposite exhibited superior mechanical properties with a dramatic increase with only 0.2 wt% HPB-GO loading, the impact strength, the tensile strength, and the compression strength, i.e., 58.53%, 83.29%, and 57%, respectively, when compared to pure epoxy resin. Meanwhile, the nanocomposite exhibits an 80% increase in thermal conductivity (0.32 W m−1 K−1). Moreover, outstanding electrical insulation performance is obtained. The ultra-low content of HPB-GO significantly improves the performance of epoxy resin, which provides an economical and effective method to broaden the application of epoxy resin in engineering.

Abstract:The synthesis and characterization of a new type of hyperbranched polyester with a flexible ethoxylated Bisphenol-A structure and terminal hydroxyl groups is reported. The influence of the hyperbranched polyester on the curing and thermomechanical properties of both unfilled and silica filled epoxy-novolac systems was studied. The curing behavior was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and rheolometry. The addition of the hyperbranched polyester to the formulation reduced the contraction on curing of both unfilled and filled systems, while Tg of the cured samples dropped down with the increase of polyester content due to the flexible backbone structure of the modifier. SEM microscopy on the fractured surface of cured samples revealed a homogeneous morphology and a possible effect of polyester as a toughness enhancer.
Bridging solvent-free polyamic acid and epoxy resin by Si-O-C hyperbranched polymer for enhanced compatibility, toughness and self-lubrication performance

Abstract:Despite the great application potential of epoxy resin (EP) modified with polyamic acid (PAA), the large amount of high-boiling-point non-protonic polar solvents used to promote their compatibility cannot be completely eliminated, which affects the fabrication and application of epoxy composites in practical engineering. Herein, PAA was prepared by solvent-free ball milling method, and then the primary amine hyperbranched polysiloxane (HSiNH 2 ) was prepared by "one-pot" method as the "bridging structure" to improve the compatibility between PAA and EP. Compared to neat EP, the flexural, impact and tensile shear strength of the epoxy composite are increased by 22.2 %, 30.0 % and 23.2 %, while the average friction coefficient and volume wear rate are reduced by 26.5% and 20.6% under the contents of PAA and HSiNH 2 are 1.50 wt% and 2.0 wt%, respectively. Moreover, the material exhibits excellent thermal properties. By comprehensively analyzing the structure and properties of the epoxy composite, it is mainly ascribed to the fact that HSiNH 2 with a large number of reactive groups acted as a "bridging structure" to enhance the compatibility of PAA and EP, which results in the epoxy composite having excellent mechanical, tribological and thermal properties. This research also lays the theoretical foundation for the development of high-performance epoxy composites in aerospace.

Abstract:ABSTRACTHigh performance epoxy resins have attracted much research interest in the last decades. Herein, two novel epoxy monomers containing cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon, 1,4‐bis(4‐(N,N‐diglycidylamino)phenoxy)cyclohexane (CyhEP) and 1,3‐bis(4‐(N,N‐diglycidylamino)phenoxy)adamantane (AdaEP) were synthesized and characterized. They were cured with 4‐methylhexahydrophthalic anhydride (MHHPA) to prepare the highly crosslinked thermosets. Both epoxy resins show good thermal stability (Td5 > 300 °C), high glass transition temperature (> 200 °C), and high storage modulus (> 3.2 GPa) due to their highly crosslinked structure. Itaconic acid-based hyperbranched polymer toughened epoxy resins with rapid stress relaxation, superb solvent resistance and closed-loop recyclability

Abstract:It is challenging for transesterification based epoxy vitrimers to achieve rapid stress relaxation, robust toughness, excellent solvent resistance and environmentally friendly recycling simultaneously. In this work, an itaconic acid-based hyperbranched polymer (IAHBP) was synthesized and incorporated as curing agent for diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) to prepare epoxy vitrimers. The tensile strength, flexural strength and impact strength of DGEBA/IAHBP reached 91.0 MPa, 121.8 MPa and 18.4 KJ•m-2 respectively. The hyperbranched topological structure of IAHBP promoted the dynamic transesterification and DGEBA/IAHBP exhibited outstanding malleability, shape reconfiguration and reprocessibility. DGEBA/IAHBP showed shape memory behavior with high shape memory fixity (Rf∼97%) and recovery ratio (Rr∼99%) over ten shape memory cycles, which was capable of complex motions, such as blooming of a flower, grasping and loosening an object, and 3D butterfly-shaped objects. Benefiting from the increased free volume and crosslinking density, DGEBA/IAHBP presented fascinating solvent resistance. DGEBA/IAHBP can be efficiently decomposed using sodium hydroxide aqueous solution without any organic solvents. The degraded epoxy residue can be reused to cure DGEBA for form new epoxy vitrimers. The recycled epoxy vitrimers presented similar mechanical properties and Tg as the original samples. This work demonstrated a convenient fabrication approach for epoxy vitrimers with excellent overall properties, promising potential for application in structural materials.

High-Performing and Fire-Resistant Biobased Epoxy Resin from Renewable Sources

Abstract:Epoxy resins with high thermal and mechanical performance as well as good resistance to fire are difficult to synthesize. In this work, a high-performance intrinsically flame-retardant epoxy resin (diglycidyl ether of daidzein (DGED)) was synthesized from renewable daidzein using an efficient one-step process, without the addition of additional flame retardants. The structure of DGED was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), 1H NMR, and 13C NMR before it was cured with 4,4′-diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM). A commercial diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) was cured with the same curing agent. Results indicated that the cured DGED/DDM system possessed glass transition temperature (T g) of up to 205 °C (172 °C for DGEBA/DDM), and tensile strength, tensile modulus, flexural strength, and flexural modulus of 83, 2972, 131, and 2980 MPa, respectively, all much higher than those of cured DGEBA/DDM. The cured DGED/DDM system demonstrated excellent flame-retardant properties, showing a residual char of 42.9% at 800 °C, limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 31.6%, and flammability rating of V-0 in UL94 test. This work provides us an efficient method to prepare high-performance epoxy resin from renewable resource.

Abstract:The preparation of bio-based epoxy resin with excellent thermal properties and flame retardant properties from green renewable resources had attracted extensive attention in recent years. Starting from the driving structural properties, the purpose of this study is to prepare multifunctional triglycidylester- diphenolic acid- bio-based epoxy (TDBE) with diphenolic acid (DPA), triglycidyl isocyanurate (TGIC), and 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphophenanthrene 10 oxide (DOPO) as raw materials. TDBE/DDM and bisphenol A epoxy resin curing agent (DGEBA/DDM) was prepared with 4,4 '- diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM) as curing agent. TDBE/DDM has excellent fire safety. LOI value rose from 24.5 to 42.0%, and the UL-94 test level passes V-0 level. In the cone calorimeter test, the peak heat release rate (pHRR) is decreased by 69.3%. Besides, the lap shear TDBE adhesive strength was 42.9 MPa, which increased by 62.5%. This new multifunctional bio-based flame retardant epoxy resin provides a broader application prospect for high-performance materials.

A Sustainable, Eugenol-Derived Epoxy Resin with High Biobased Content, Modulus, Hardness and Low Flammability: Synthesis, Curing Kinetics and Structure–property Relationship

Abstract:To develop functional sustainable epoxy resins, we report a novel epoxy resin (DEU-EP) with high net biobased content (70.2 wt%) derived from renewable eugenol. We comparatively study DEU-EP with a commercial bisphenol A epoxy resin.(DGEBA) in the presence of a diamine curing agent, 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl methane (DDM). Differential scanning calorimetry reveals that DEU-EP can be sufficiently cured by DDM at a slower rate than DGEBA. By applying an autocatalytic reaction kinetic model we adequately simulate the curing rate of DEU-EP/DDM, and reveal its detailed kinetic mechanisms from model-free isoconversional analysis. Dynamic mechanical analysis shows that DEU-EP/DDM takes the higher storage modulus up to similar to 97 degrees C than does DGEBA/DDM with the glass temperature of 114 degrees C. Nanoindentation and thermogravimetric analyses demonstrate that compared with DGEBA/DDM, DEU-EP/DDM exhibits a 20%, 6.7% and 111% increase in Young's modulus, hardness and char yield, respectively. Microscale combustion calorimetry data show that DEU-EP/DDM expresses 55% and 38% lower heat release rate and total heat release than does DGEBA/DDM, respectively. The horizontal burning test approves DEU-EP/DDM can self-extinguish in a short time. Our results demonstrate that the eugenol building blocks and their arrangement greatly affect the cure behaviors of DEU-EP/DDM, and contribute significantly to its enhanced mechanical properties, high-temperature charring ability and chain motions at the glassy state, as well as the reduced flammability. To summarize, DEU-EP exhibits a high promise as a new sustainable epoxy monomer for fabricating high biobased content, high rigid and low flammable epoxy materials. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Replacing petroleum-derived chemicals with biobased ones to develop high-performance polymers is an important direction of sustainable development strategy. However, the current bio-based polymers suffered from complex preparation and unsatisfactory comprehensive properties. Herein, the bio-based 9,10-dihydro-10-(2,3dicarboxypropyl)-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene 10-oxide (DDP) was covalently introduced into epoxy resin (EP)/anhydride system via solvent-free, green polymerization. The resulting EP1.2 sample (phosphorus content = 1.2 wt%) achieved a UL-94 V-0 rating with a limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 32.6%, indicative of outstanding flame retardancy. The peak heat release rate and total heat release of EP(1.2 )sample were 50.5% and 22.6% lower than virgin EP. DDP featured the in -situ reinforcing and toughening actions on EP due to the pi-pi stacking of its biphenyl group. The impact strength, tensile strength and elongation at break of EP1.2 were 218.2%, 46.5%, and 98.1% higher than those of EP, indicating exceptional mechanical strength and toughness. The high transparency and thermal stability of EP1.2 were well-preserved after adding DDP. Obviously, EP1.2 outperformed many previous flame-retardant EP systems due to its ease of fabrication and great overall performance. Therefore, this work offers a feasible and green strategy for the fabrication of advanced EPs with exceptional flame retardancy, mechanical properties, optical performances, and thermal stability by bioderived, reactive flame retardants, which is conducive to the sustainable development.

Abstract:Degradable epoxy resins are designed to address the environmental pollution caused by traditional epoxy resins. However, incorporating the degradability of dynamic covalent bonds in the design of degradable resins often compromises the rigidity and heat resistance of the material, rendering it less suitable for high-temperature applications, such as those used in deep space exploration. This paper presents the creation of an innovative, entirely bio-based epoxy monomer. Its cyclic rigid dynamic bonds confer high tensile modulus (4.06 GPa), glass transition temperature (Tg=240 °C), notable creep resistance with full shape recovery at 180 °C, and remarkable degradability, dissolving entirely in a 0.1 M HCl solution in just 60 minutes at 50 °C. The preparation of the diacetal was achieved by reacting vanillin with xylitol under acidic conditions. This was followed by a reaction with bio-derived epichlorohydrin to produce bio-based, multifunctional epoxy monomers featuring hydroxyl groups and bicyclic acetal structures, marking a new strategy for eco-friendly polymer synthesis. This monomer was then cured with a hardener to create an epoxy crosslinked network. The eco-friendly raw materials are easily obtainable, and the synthesized cross-linked network structure is exceptionally high-performing. This makes it a potential material for use in deep space exploration and other tough environments, and it provides a benchmark for synthesizing chemical degradable epoxy resins suitable for extreme conditions.
