Abstract:The development of lightweight composites with desirable thermo-mechanical properties is progressively increasing. Phthalonitrile (PN) based composites have shown great potential in this regard. However, the basic thermal properties of PN composites required for engineering design are not yet fully understood. In this work, we investigated the thermal stability, thermal expansion behavior and thermal conductivity of PN composites reinforced with carbon fiber (CF) and high silicon fiberglass (HSF) via combined experimental studies and numerical simulations. The results indicated that CF/PN performs better in thermostability than HSF/PN at temperatures below 500(degrees)C. Moreover, the incorporation of CF and HSF lowered the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and thermal insulation of PN. At room temperature, the in-plane CTE of CF/PN and HSF/PN were 1.97E-6 and 9.24E-6(degrees)C(-1), respectively, while the out-plane thermal conductivities of CF/PN and HSF/PN were 0.65 and 0.34 W/(m K). It is worth noting that an excessively high fiber volume fraction would lead to poor thermal insulation and lightweight properties of the PN composites, while a low fiber volume fraction would result in poor stiffness and thermal dimensional stability. Determined via TOPSIS model, a fiber volume fraction range of 50%-60% was ideal for both composites with comprehensive optimal properties, respectively.
Establishment of regularities of influence on the specific heat capacity and thermal diffusivity of polymer nanocomposites of a complex of defining parameters

Abstract:This paper reports a series of experimental studies to establish regularities of the integrated effect exerted on the specific heat capacity of polymer nanocomposites by such factors as the temperature regime of their production, the value of the mass fraction of the filler, and the temperature of the composite material. The studies were conducted for nanocomposites based on polypropylene filled with carbon nanotubes. When obtaining composites, the method of mixing the components in the melt of the polymer was used. During the studies, the temperature of nanocomposites varied from 295 to 455 K, the mass fraction of the filler ‒ from 0.3 to 10 %. The basic parameter of the technological mode for obtaining composite materials, the value of overheating the polymer melt relative to its melting point, varied in the range of 10...75 K. It is shown that the temperature dependence of the specific heat capacity of the considered composites is sensitive to changes in the overheating of the polymer melt only in the region maximum values of the specific heat capacity. Concentration dependences of the specific heat capacity of the considered nanocomposites at different values of their temperature and the level of overheating of the polymer melt have been built. The studies have been carried out to identify the effects of the influence of the above parameters on the coefficient of thermal diffusivity of nanocomposites. It has been established, in particular, that an increase in the level of overheating the polymer could lead to a very significant increase in the coefficient of thermal diffusivity, which is all the more significant the higher the proportion of filler and the lower the temperature of the composite material. It is shown that the level of overheating the polymer melt relative to its melting point is a parameter that can be used as the basis for the creation of polymer composite materials with specified thermophysical properties.

Abstract:Classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations employing Brenner potential for intra-nanotube interactions and Van der Waals forces for polymer-nanotube interfaces are used to invetigate the thermal expansion and diffusion characteristics of carbon nanotube-polyethylene composites. Additions of carbon nanotubes to polymer matrix are found to increase the glass transition temperature Tg, and thermal expansion and diffusion coefficients in the composite above Tg. These findings could have implications in CNT composite processing, coating and painting applications.

Interface Probing by Dielectric Frequency Dispersion in Carbon Nanocomposites

Abstract:Interfaces remain one of the major issues in limiting the understanding and designing of polymer nanocomposites due to their complexity and pivotal role in determining the ultimate composites properties. In this study, we take multi-walled carbon nanotubes/silicone elastomer nanocomposites as a representative example, and have for the first time studied the correlation between high-frequency dielectric dispersion and static/dynamic interfacial characteristics. We have found that the interface together with other meso-structural parameters (volume fraction, dispersion, agglomeration) play decisive roles in formulating the dielectric patterns. The calculation of the relaxation times affords the relative importance of interfacial polarization to dipolar polarization in resultant dielectric relaxation. Dielectric measurements coupled with cyclic loading further reveals the remarkable capability of dielectric frequency dispersion in capturing the evolution of interfacial properties, such as a particular interface reconstruction process occurred to the surfactant-modified samples. All these results demonstrate that high-frequency dielectric spectroscopy is instrumental to probing both static and dynamic meso-structural characteristics, especially effective for the composites with relative weak interfaces which remains a mission impossible for many other techniques. The insights provided here based on the analyses of dielectric frequency dispersion will pave the way for optimized design and precise engineering of meso-structure in polymer nanocomposites.

Abstract:Polymer composites have a wide range of applications in frontier science and technology, such as flexible electronic packaging and thermally actuated soft robotics. However, most of the theoretical and numerical researches on the thermal properties of polymer composites have been focusing on the composites with homogenous mono-fillers. In this paper, a comprehensive study on the effective thermal conductivity of the composites containing both particulate and fibrous fillers is performed through experimental, numerical and theoretical approaches. Firstly, the PDMS composites with aluminum nitride particles and/or multiwalled carbon nanotubes are prepared. Then, a series of random digital models are constructed by the simulated annealing method and monte carlo method to characterize the microstructure of such composites. And then, the lattice Boltzmann method is used to calculate the effective thermal conductivity of the random microstructure. The present numerical results are fully verified by experiments. Finally, a phenomenological prediction model is developed by the nonlinear regression method based on the systematic numerical simulations. To show the versatility of the present model, an interesting experiment on thermal management materials is designed and performed. By virtue of this model, quantitatively controlling the temperature of electronic devices may be fulfilled.

Abstract:Polymer nanocomposites combine the merits of polymer matrices and the unusual effects of nanoscale reinforcements and have been recognized as important members of the material family. Being a fundamental material property, thermal conductivity directly affects the molding and processing of materials as well as the design and performance of devices and systems. Polymer nanocomposites have been used in numerous industrial fields; thus, high demands are placed on the thermal conductivity feature of polymer nanocomposites. In this Perspective, we first provide roadmaps for the development of polymer nanocomposites with isotropic, in-plane, and through-plane high thermal conductivities, demonstrating the great effect of nanoscale reinforcements on thermal conductivity enhancement of polymer nanocomposites. Then the significance of the thermal conductivity of polymer nanocomposites in different application fields, including wearable electronics, thermal interface materials, battery thermal management, dielectric capacitors, electrical equipment, solar thermal energy storage, biomedical applications, carbon dioxide capture, and radiative cooling, are highlighted. In future research, we should continue to focus on methods that can further improve the thermal conductivity of polymer nanocomposites. On the other hand, we should pay more attention to the synergistic improvement of the thermal conductivity and other properties of polymer nanocomposites. Emerging polymer nanocomposites with high thermal conductivity should be based on application-oriented research.
Thermal Diffusivity Mapping of Graphene Based Polymer Nanocomposites

Abstract:Nanoparticle dispersion is widely recognised as a challenge in polymer nanocomposites fabrication. The dispersion quality can affect the physical and thermomechanical properties of the material system. Qualitative transmission electronic microscopy, often cumbersome, remains as the 'gold standard' for dispersion characterisation. However, quantifying dispersion at macroscopic level remains a difficult task. This paper presents a quantitative dispersion characterisation method using non-contact infrared thermography mapping that measures the thermal diffusivity (α) of the graphene nanocomposite and relates α to a dispersion index. The main advantage of the proposed method is its ability to evaluate dispersion over a large area at reduced effort and cost, in addition to measuring the thermal properties of the system. The actual resolution of this thermal mapping reaches 200 µm per pixel giving an accurate picture of graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) dispersion. The post-dispersion treatment shows an improvement in directional thermal conductivity of the composite of up to 400% increase at 5 wt% of GNP. The Maxwell-Garnet effective medium approximation is proposed to estimate thermal conductivity that compare favourably to measured data. The development of a broadly applicable dispersion quantification method will provide a better understanding of reinforcement mechanisms and effect on performance of large scale composite structures.

Abstract:Thermal management of insulating materials plays a vital role in the performance,lifetime,and liability of electric equipment and electronic devices.In recent years,the development of electric equipment and electronic devices packaging tends to be high power density and miniaturization,thus much heat is generated within the unit volume of the equipment and devices.An excellent cooling capacity becomes the key factor to ensure long-term stable operation of the equipment and devices.Therefore,the research of high thermal conductive polymer nanocomposites has attracted much attention of researchers.We reviewed and discussed the physical properties of various thermally conductive filler and their applications in the preparation of dielectric polymer nanocomposites.Emphasis was placed on the formation of con tinuous thermally conductive networks by controlling the microstructure of nanocomposites,such as controlling the orientation of thermally conductive fillers,constructing double threshold networks and nanofiller self-assembly.Finally,it is suggested that electrospinning can be used as a powerful strategy to construct flexible polymer nanocomposites with highly through-plane thermal conductivity.The problems and future prospects of high thermal conductivity nanocomposites were also discussed.

Abstract:The interfacial thermal resistance of polymer composites is a key factor affecting their thermal conductivity. But the interfacial thermal resistance might be influenced by many interface factors, such as defects, interface bonding strength, compatibility and the interface layer, which are difficult to be distinguished individually. The thickness of interfaces between fillers and polymers is in nanometer scale, leading to the research of effect of interface layer on thermal conductivity is very difficult. Herein, inspired by the differential calculus in mathematics, the effect of interface layer on thermal conductivity was studied through a design of double-layered and triple-layered alumina/silicone rubber composites and reflected by the through-plane thermal conductivity of the composites at the same filler loading. The top and bottom layers in the composites were used to represent a matrix and a filler, respectively. The middle layer in the triple-layered composites was assumed as an interface layer. The results showed that the presence of the interface layer could increase thermal conductivity when the thermal conductivity difference between the top and the bottom layers was high. A series model was used to simulate the dependence of thermal conductivity on the interface layer at triple-layered composites and real filler/polymer interface, respectively. This work could provide a new method to study the interface thermal resistance and promote the development of polymer composites with high thermal conductivity. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:With the incorporation of microparticles in composite materials becoming increasingly widespread, it is important to study the effect of the thermophysical properties and thermal contact between individual microparticles on heat transfer in composite materials. However, studies on the heat transfer performance of single microparticles are scarce, mainly because the micrometre scale size makes the measurement difficult. Furthermore, the area of contact between microparticles is smaller than the micrometre scale, further enhancing the difficulty of heat measurements. In this study, an H-type measurement device was developed for the thermophysical characterization of single microparticles. Through experimental and theoretical analyses, we obtained the thermal conductivity and thermal resistance of single microparticles of silicon dioxide, polyethylene (PE), poly ether ketone (PEEK) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), apart from the interfacial thermal resistance between two PMMA particles. Furthermore, effective experimental methods were also developed for the study of the heat transfer mechanism of composite materials at the microscopic level.
Enhanced Thermal Conductivity by Combined Fillers in Polymer Composites

Abstract:This paper reports a new way of improving the thermal conduction property of polymer composites composed of silicone rubber and combined fillers obtained by attaching spherical alumina particles to carbon fibers using spray-drying method. The experimental results showed that the thermal conductivities of the polymer composites were 16, 28, 30, 32, and 42% higher than those of composites with untreated carbon fibers at the same content. The analysis based on effective medium theory revealed that the interface thermal resistance decreases from 1.2 x 10(-6) m(2)K/W to 8.5 x 10(-7) m(2)K/W in polymer composites. It demonstrates that the combined fillers could decrease the interface thermal resistance to improve the thermal conduction property of polymer composites, and thus are promising for the development of high-performance thermally conductive products.

Abstract:As a material possessing extremely high thermal conductivity, graphene has been considered as the ultimate filler for fabrication of highly thermally conductive polymer composites. In the past decade, graphene and its derivatives were demonstrated in many studies to be very effective in enhancing the thermal conductivity of various polymers. This paper reviews current progress in the development of graphene/polymer composites with high thermal conductivity. We began with the effects of isotopes, defects/doping, edges and substrate, polycrystallinity, functionalization, size and layer number, and folding/twisting on the thermal conductivity of graphene. We then modelled the thermal conductivity of graphene/polymer composites and, through molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, demonstrated its dependence on interfacial thermal conductance as well as size, dispersion and volume fraction of graphene. After a critique of recent studies on thermally conductive graphene/polymer composites and their potential applications, we identified several outstanding issues, new challenges and opportunities for future endeavours.

Abstract:Low thermal conductivity of polymers, which is one of the considerable drawbacks of commonly used composite structures, has been the focus of many researchers aiming to achieve high-performance polymer-based nanocomposites through the inclusion of highly thermally conductive fillers inside the polymer matrices. Thus, in the present study, a multiscale scheme using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) and finite element (FE) method is developed to explore the impact of different nano-sized fillers (carbon-nitride and graphene) on the effective thermal conductivity of polyethylene-based nanocomposites. We show that the thermal conductivity of amorphous polyethylene at room temperature using the reactive bond order (REBO) interatomic potential is nearly 0.36 0.05W/mK. Also, the atomistic results predict that, compared to the C3N and graphene nanosheets, the C2N nanofilm presents a much stronger interfacial thermal conductance (ITC) with polyethylene. Furthermore, the results indicate that the effective thermal conductivity values of C2N-polyethylene, C3N-polyethylene, and graphene-polyethylene nanocomposite, at constant volume fractions of 1%, are about 0.47, 0.56, and 0.74 W/mK, respectively. In other words, the results of our models reveal that the thermal conductivity of fillers is the dominant factor that defines the effective thermal conductivity of nanocomposites.

Structure formation and thermal conduction in polymer-based composites obtained by fused filament fabrication

Abstract:Fused filament fabrication (FFF) is widely used to obtain polymer-based composites with improved mechanical and thermal conduction properties. The effective properties of the composites are sensitive to its structure including the shape, distribution, and orientation of inclusions in the matrix and FFF-specific defects. The present work aims to study the formation of composite structure and relate it to the measured effective thermal conduction properties. Polymer flow in the hot end and the structure of printed samples are studied by metallography. The effective thermal diffusivity is measured by the laser flash method and analyzed by the Maxwell Garnett theory. Fibers in a polymer-matrix composite visualize polymer flow in the hot end of the FFF printer. In the nozzle, fibers are generally oriented parallel to the flow direction while gas bubbles may locally disturb flow and disorient fibers. Printed composite Carbon fiber/TPU inherits preferential orientation of fibers observed in the filament. Disorientation of fibers relative to the alignment direction increases after printing. In the printed Al2O3/PA composite, there is a lattice of triangle-based cylindrical pores parallel to the extrusion direction. Al2O3 particles are of irregular shape and approximately equiaxed. No segregation or agglomeration are observed. Significant anisotropy of thermal diffusivity is observed in the printed samples of 5%vol. Carbon fiber/TPU composite. The measured effective thermal diffusivity of printed Al2O3/PA composites is essentially isotropic and significantly increases with the volume fraction of inclusions. In the studied FFF-printed composites, the effective thermal diffusivity is proportional to the thermal diffusivity of polymer matrix, which is sensitive to its structure formed in non-equilibrium conditions of rapid quenching from liquid phase.

Abstract:Enhancement of thermal conductivity of natural flake graphite/polymer (NFG/polymer) composite sheets, prepared with tape casting method, was studied by adding carbon-based nano-fillers including carbon black, carbon nanotube (CNT) and graphene. The in-plane thermal conductivities of the composites, i.e., the thermal conductivities along the tape casting plane, were measured. The improvement of thermal conductivities of the composites was observed to be up to 24% by adding CNT and 31% by adding graphene at 10wt.%. Micro-structures of the NFG/polymer composites were revealed by X-ray diffraction patterns and field emission scanning electron microscopy images to delineate the mechanism of thermal conductance in the composites. From the observed structure, a new thermal conductivity model for the composites with CNT and graphene additives was constructed based on a bridging mechanism. The new model applies well to the measured thermal conductivities of the as-prepared samples. It is expected that the model could also be applied well to composites added with other homologous materials for bridging thermal contacts.
Synergistic Improvement of Dielectric and Thermal Conductivity Properties for Polymers Filled with Multifunctional Modified Nanowires

Abstract:Dielectric composites are widely used in power electronics, power systems, aerospace, and other fields due to their extremely high power density. However, if their energy density can be further increased, the application range will be greatly improved. Improving the dielectric constant of composites is one of the most effective ways to increase the energy density. In this study, a preparation method for copper calcium titanate nanowires (CCTO-NWs) with adjustable aspect ratio was investigated. Upon incorporation of these CCTO-NWs into the polymer matrix, the nanocomposites exhibit a significantly higher dielectric constant and a lower dielectric loss. In addition, a thin layer of Al2O3 with excellent thermal conductivity is coated on the surface of the CCTO-NWs to form a core-shell structure nanowire CCTO-NW@Al2O3. The introduction of the thermal conductive layer of Al2O3 not only creates a continuous heat transfer path within the dielectric composite, increasing the thermal conductivity of the composite from 0.11 W/(m·K) of pure HIPS to 1.12 W/(m·K), but also serves as a buffer layer between HIPS and CCTO-NWs, effectively alleviating the electric field distortion caused by the large difference in the dielectric constant between them, thereby optimizing the dielectric properties of the composite and reducing the dielectric permeability threshold from 30 to 20 vol %. This work provides an effective strategy for synergistically improving the dielectric constant and thermal conductivity of dielectric composites while also taking into account the good flexibility of polymer/ceramic nanocomposites.

Abstract:Polymers are usually considered as thermal insulators and their applications are limited by their low thermal conductivity. However, recent studies showed that certain polymers have surprisingly high thermal conductivity, some of which are comparable to that in poor metals or even silicon. In this review, we outline the experimental achievements and theoretical progress of thermal transport in polymers and their nanocomposites. The open questions and challenges of existing theories are discussed. Special attention is given to the mechanism of thermal transport, the enhancement of thermal conductivity in polymer nanocomposites/fibers, and their potential application as thermal interface materials.

In this review article, we aim to: 1). systematically summarize the molecular level understanding on the thermal transport mechanisms in polymers in terms of polymer morphology, chain structure and inter-chain coupling; 2). highlight the rationales in the recent efforts in enhancing the thermal conductivity of nanostructured polymers and polymer nanocomposites. Finally, we outline the main advances, challenges and outlooks for highly thermal-conductive polymer and polymer nanocomposites.

Abstract:The addition of fillers with high thermal properties to polymer matrices increases the thermal conductivity of the composites in comparison with pure polymers. In the literature, various models have been proposed for predicting the thermal conductivity of polymer composites, where, in order to agree with the experimental data, some control parameters are introduced, the physical meaning of which is sometimes in doubt. In the present paper, a new effective thermal conductivity model of polymers filled with highly conductive particles is proposed. According to this model, the structure of a polymer composite is represented as the sum of two different parts: a structure with uniformly dispersed in polymer and not in contact with each other filler particles, and a structure with randomly distributed polymer particles, completely covered by monolayers of aggregated filler particles (“shell structure”). The comparison shows good agreement between the results of the proposed model and experimental data, in contrast to the results of the Lichtenecker and Mamunya models. Based on the proposed model, the aggregation abilities of filler particles for some polymer composites have been determined.
