Abstract:Batch crystallization is widely used in fine chemicals,pharmacy and biological processes.The simulation of it is of impor- tance to product quality and process control.A mathematical model for batch cooling crystallization is setup.The model is described by a set of integro-differential equations including a hyperbolic partial equation(Population balance equation).Being strongly nonlinear, the problem does not possess an analytical solution.Numerical method is used to calculate process parameters such as the crystal densi- ty function,super saturation,nucleation rate and growth rate,and process product quality evaluation indices are defined and compu- ted.The unseeded and seeded batch cooling crystallization processes are quantitatively simulated respectively to investigate the influ- ence of crystal seeds.Competition between nucleation and growth in crystallization process is also simulated.Transient phenomena in these processes are given thorough explanation from theoretical aspect.

Abstract:The effects of initial supersaturation, cooling rate, and stirring rate on the morphology of strontium chloride hexahydrate (SrCl26H2O) crystals were investigated by batch-cooling crystallization, providing optimal operating conditions. Uniform needle-like crystals with a length of 1200.50m and a width of 100.92m on average were obtained. The corresponding aspect ratio of length to width was about 11.90. Moreover, the morphological modification of SrCl26H2O crystals using cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) was studied. When 20.30 mmol center dot L-1 of CTAC was added, the length and width of crystals were 792.71m and 233.25m, respectively, and the corresponding aspect ratio decreased to 3.40. The shape of SrCl26H2O crystal changed to granule-like, probably because of the strong interaction of CTAC with the SrCl26H2O facets with a denser distribution of Cl- ions. This study offers a simple, flexible, and highly efficient approach to regulate the morphology of SrCl26H2O crystals and opportunities for multiple applications of SrCl26H2O.

Abstract:A morphological population balance model is applied to crystallization of hen-egg white lysozyme for investigation of the effect of seed loading and cooling rate on supersaturation, and crystal size and shape distributions. Growth rates of individual faces and final crystal size and shape distributions were examined under varied seeding and cooling conditions. It was found that for growth only crystallization, desired crystal size and shape can be obtained by coordinative manipulation of the seed loading and cooling rate: low seed loading and high cooling rate lead to large crystals of low aspect ratio, but care has to be taken to avoid nucleation and major shape change such as width becoming larger than the length. The interesting results not only demonstrate the effectiveness of morphological population balance simulation for protein crystallization but also provide useful knowledge for process optimization and control.

Abstract:Batch crystallization is widely used in fine chemicals, pharmacy and biological processes. For meeting the demands of product quality control and process optimization in batch crystallization process, mathematical models of processes include phenomena such as population balance, crystal growth, the energy balance as well as the crystallization kinetics of agglomeration and/or breakage description are proposed. From a numerical point of view, the population balance models are a set of integro-differential equations. Key points of modeling and numerical methods are given in detailed discussion. Finally, the parameters values for the seeded batch cooling crystallization process are presented. Those model parameters are the basis of crystallization product quality control and process optimization. Additionally, a computer aided process system is established for crystallization process data acquisition and data analysis.

Abstract:Aim to explore the polymer crystallization during the cooling stage, a multiscale model in which macroscopic temperature and microscopic crystal morphology are related with each other is built up. On the one hand, the variation of macroscopic temperature can bring in changes of nucleation number and growth rate of crystal, and thus results in changes of microscopic crystal morphology. On the other hand, the latent heat released by crystallization can cause significant rise of temperature with the evolution of the crystallization. According to this multiscale model, the algorithm of coupling finite volume method with pixel method is proposed. The finite volume method is used on the coarse grid to calculate the macroscopic temperature and the pixel method is employed on the fine grid to capture the morphology of crystallization. A 2-D polymer melt with its boundaries experiencing the constant cooling rate operation is studied and the temperatures, relative crystallinity as well as the evolution of crystal morphology are given. In addition, the roles of cooling rate and initial temperature are also discussed. The results indicate that cooling rate is a significant factor for the temperature,relative crystallinity as well as the morphology. In the case of higher cooling rate, the plateau of temperature turns on earlier and lasts shorter, and so does the relative crystallinity; the temperature which begins with the crystallization does not change, however, the range of temperature becomes wider; due to this wider temperature change, nucleation number becomes more, thus result in the smaller average crystal size. The initial temperature only affect the time of showing up of temperature plateau and crystallization, and is almost independent on the lasted time.

Abstract:A model was proposed for modeling the non-equilibrium crystal growth of single crystals (Y. D. Shu, Y. Li, Y. Zhang, J. J. Liu and X. Z. Wang, CrystEngComm, 2018, 20, 5143-5153). It describes mathematically and digitally the non-equilibrium growth behavior of single crystals using multi-component transfer rate models, as well as considering multi-component phase equilibria, adsorption, orientation and crystallization of individual molecules on crystal faces. In this paper, the model for single crystal growth is extended to modeling a population of crystals in a crystallizer by incorporating it into morphological population balance equations. The resulting modeling approach, i.e. the multi-stage multi-component transfer rate morphological population balance equation ((MPBE)-P-3) model, is able to predict the spatial and temporal distribution of multi-components inside crystals during the course of crystallization as well as the multi-component composition of the product crystals. The new modeling approach is introduced by reference to a case study of NaNO3 batch cooling crystallization in water.

Abstract:Density change is ubiquitous in phase transformation, and it can induce melt convection which strongly influences the crystal growth. Here, an anisotropic lattice Boltzmann-phase-field method was extended to predict the dendritic growth under the shrinkage or expansion melt convection by density change induced. A novel LB equation with an anisotropic coefficient was constructed to model the advancement of ordering parameter, coupling with the passive scalar LB equation for convective and diffusive heat transfer during phase transition. We studied dendritic growth and shape selection with melt convection induced by density change in crystal growth. Results show that the melt convection induced by density change affects strongly the dendritic growth. The shrinkage flow results in a higher tip velocity while the expansion flow leads to a slower one. Predicted Péclet number with respect to the relative density change was compared with an analytical solution. Moreover, the modified selection parameter has been verified by numerical simulations.

Abstract:Cooling surface crystallization, termed scale formation, is a serious problem in suspension-type cooling crystallization. The heat transfer efficiency of the cooling surface decreases when scale formation occurs during suspension crystallization. Consequently, the productivity of the suspension crystallization process worsens. Suspension crystallization operations eventually fail to continue. Previous studies on scale formation discussed its mechanisms, focusing on supersaturation near-heat transfer surfaces, flow dynamics, surface materials, and geometrical structure of the surface. These studies showed that suspended crystals affect the scale formation dynamics. Our group has studied scale formation phenomena considering the effect of suspended particles on these phenomena. This work focuses on the effect of suspended crystal characteristics, namely, size and shape, and suspension amount (like the number of suspended crystal particles) to clarify how they affect scale formation. Cooling crystallization experiments of melt crystallization for ethylene carbonate containing 5 mass % of water show that the scale layer characteristics (e.g., thickness or density) vary depending on conditions. Small size (length in the maximum axis direction), small aspect ratio, and small number of crystals are important in suppressing scale formation and enhancing suspension cooling crystallization to improve the suspended crystal yield. A guideline example is proposed for seeding conditions in terms of suspended crystal characteristics and suspension amount.

Abstract:To overcome the short-coming in the previous tools on the simulation of composition of crystals during growth, we proposed a model based on multi-component mass transfer for modelling the growth behavior of crystals. The core of the model is a phase non-equilibrium model of a single crystal that treats the solute components equally and describes them by a set of mass transfer equations. The size, shape and composition of a crystal at a given time during the crystallization process, i.e. the size in each face direction and the area of each face, depend on the amount of each material deposited on each surface. This is unlike conventional facet growth kinetic model in which the growth rate is correlated directly to supersaturation. Such models can be applied to describe co-crystallization processes, estimate the impurity content in product and enables the prediction of stability of crystalline pharmaceuticals. The modelling method is illustrated by reference to a detailed case study of NaNO3 crystal growth in water in the presence of KNO3. The dynamic evolution of crystal composition, shape, and size is predicted in simulation runs under different initial KNO3 concentrations.

A two dimensional population balance model is applied to study the crystal shape changing behaviour in cooling crystallisation producing beta-form L-glutamic acid crystals, in the presence and without the presence of an additive, L-phenylalanine. Mathematical model of three-phase fluidized bed for solution crystallization

Abstract:Based on the population balance theory, a partial mixing series model, which integrates the kinetics of crystal growth with the hydrodynamics of characterization of the geometric properties and operating parameters of the device, was developed to describe the behaviour of three-phase fluidized bed crystallizer. With this model, the concentration distribution of the solution, size distribution of the crystals and the mean size of the products were estimated. The calculated results agreed well with the experimental data for sucrose crystallization in a three-phase fluidized bed. The fact indicates that the model is quite reasonable, practical and capable of providing a basis for the design and scale up of three-phase crystallization systems.

Abstract:The application of ultrasound is recently gaining significant interest in crystallization because of its significant impact on nucleation and growth rates, particle breakage, crystal habit, polymorphism, and crystal size distribution. Pyrazinamide, an essential drug for the treatment of mycobacterium tuberculosis, has four different polymorphic forms. The metastable δ -polymorph exhibit plate-type habit which is desirable for downstream operations compared to commercially available needle-type α -polymorph. This contribution presents a detail experimental and computational study on the effect of ultrasound and its amplitude on nucleation, growth, and breakage of crystals for unseeded batch cooling sonocrystallization of δ -polymorph of pyrazinamide from its 1,4-dioxane solution. A series of sonocrystallization experiments are conducted with different cooling rates and ultrasonic amplitudes and a bivariate population balance model involving crystal nucleation, growth, and breakage is developed and fully validated. The model simulations give important insights on time evolution of mean crystal size and aspect ratio of plate-type crystals.

Abstract:Based on the population balance equation in a batch crystallizer characteristic of seeded precipitation, a model to calculate the rate of apparent crystal growth of aluminum hydroxide from the size distribution was developed. The simulation results indicate that the rate of apparent crystal growth during seeded precipitation exhibits a manifest dependence on the crystal size. In general, there is an obvious increase in the apparent crystal growth rate with the augment in crystal size. The apparent activation energy increases with the increase of characteristic crystal size, which indicates that the growth of small crystals is controlled by surface chemical reaction; it is gradually controlled by both the surface reaction and diffusion with the augment in crystal size.

Abstract:A model based on multi-component mass transfer is proposed for modeling the non-equilibrium growth behavior of crystals during solution crystallization. The multi-component composition in crystals in any spatial location can thus be estimated at any time during a crystallization process. It can be applied to the estimation of impurity content and assessing the stability of crystalline pharmaceuticals. The multi-components are equally described by diffusion, adsorption and integration equations. The facet growth rates are estimated by the amount of materials grown on the surface divided by the material densities and the surface areas. This is unlike the conventional facet growth kinetic model in which the growth rate is correlated directly to supersaturation. The modeling method is illustrated by case studies of NaNO3 and KDP crystallization. The dynamic evolution of crystal composition and shape distribution is simulated.

Abstract:A mathematical model for dilution crystallization of spectinomycin dihydrochloride pentahydrate was established on the basis of the population and mass balance. Three operating modes, i.e., constant mass rate addition of diluent, constant mass fraction of diluent and constant size-independent growth rate, were investigated over a wide range of controlled parameters. The intrinsic characteristics of the crystallization process and the influence of operation parameters were analyzed in detail. Suitable strategy for better performance was suggested.

Abstract:Crystals experience changes in both size and shape during growth. A method is developed for the simultaneous prediction of crystal shape evolution and size distribution for solution crystallization processes by combining shape evolution modeling and population balance modeling techniques. When surface integration is the rate-controlling step and each face grows by the same mechanism (for example, the screw dislocation mechanism), the relative growth rates of crystal faces are constant, and the crystal volume can be represented by a piecewise smooth function of the crystal size. The process can then be described by a simple 1-dimensional (1-D) population balance model linked with the shape evolution model. The current method is applicable to tablet-shaped crystals with a dominant face of arbitrary initial size and shape. Such crystals can be treated as two-dimensional (2-D). A case study of succinic acid crystals grown from water illustrates the applicability and simplicity of the proposed method. (C) 2004 American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Abstract:<p>A lattice Boltzmann-finite volume scheme is proposed to numerically study the equiaxed crystal growth during binary alloy solidification. In present model, the lattice Boltzmann method is extended to numerically model the growth of equiaxed crystal coupled with solute transfer. An anisotropic lattice Boltzmann equation fitting into the lattice Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) scheme is applied to describe the liquid-solid phase changes with interfacial anisotropic effect. Solute transfer is described by the diffusion equation including an anti-trapping current term, which is solved by the finite volume scheme and coupled straightly with the anisotropic lattice Boltzmann equation. After model validation, the hybrid model is applied to numerically simulate the equiaxed crystal growth with single and multiple seeds during Al-Cu solidification. The results demonstrate that the hybrid model is an alternative approach for numerical simulations of equiaxed crystal growth during binary alloy solidification with reliable numerical accuracy and excellent computational efficiency, which has important instructional significance for understanding the underlying mechanism of alloy solidification.</p>

Abstract:To better understand the complicated phenomena in a precipitation process, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is utilized to account for reactions, crystallization, mixing, and their interactions. The moment transformations of the population balances taking into account the chemical and crystallization kinetics are integrated into a CFD solver to describe the generation and transportation of the crystal phase. The current work applies this CFD tool to simulate the reactive precipitation process in a semibatch crystallizer, which is widely used in chemical and pharmaceutical industries. BaSO4 precipitation is employed as an example system. The influence of hydrodynamics in the stirred tank, as characterized by the impeller speed and feed location, on the distribution of supersaturation and the subsequent crystal size distribution is investigated. The numerical predictions are validated with measurements and can be used as an aid in the optimization of semibatch precipitator design.

Abstract:For researching the kinetics of unseeded batch crystallization process, the KNO3-H2O system was tested and the assumption that the kinetic characteristic after spontaneous nucleation is similar to that of seeded crystallization process was proposed. Responding to the assumption, a kinetic model related to transmittance, as a variable reflecting solid phase information, was established by optical method in order to reduce the relativity between model parameters and concentration data. Using the model, the secondary nucleation and crystal growth kinetics parameters of KNO3 crystal were successfully estimated from the intermediate and final stages' experimental data, and the values of parameters appeared to be in good agreement with those of seeded crystallization process published in literature. Based on it, a quantitative design method of seed load was subsequently put forward for seeded crystallization process, and the corresponding experiment also acquired perfect effect.

Abstract:Morphological population balance (PB) models incorporate crystal shape information into PB simulations so that the shape of any crystal at any moment can be fully reconstructed. This study extended the morphological PB model by considering crystal nucleation, breakage and aggregation, which have not been previously considered in morphological PB. It was assumed that the size of a nucleus is infinitely small and that it exhibits a shape only due to facet growth and that the breakage and aggregation of crystals can result in size changes in one coordinate direction at a time. Potash alum crystallization was used as a case study to demonstrate the modelling approach.
