Abstract:We numerically report a novel THz generation method based on plasmonic metasurface consist of single layer split-ring resonators array. The terahertz generation originates from nonlinear optical rectification in meta-atoms is broadband and free from phase match conditions. The strong linear response and inherent nonlinear behaviors in plasmonic metasurface can be described by a time-domain hydrodynamic model, in which both surface and bulk contributions of nonlinearity are considered. The coupled Maxwell-hydrodynamic system capturing full-wave physics and free electron dynamics is solved with a parallel finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The proposed method is fundamentally important to design nonlinear plasmonic nanodevices, especially for efficient and broadband THz emitters.
Second-harmonic Generation Via Double Topological Valley-Hall Kink Modes in All-Dielectric Photonic Crystals

Abstract:Nonlinear topological photonics, which explores topics common to the fields of topological phases and nonlinear optics, is expected to open up a new paradigm in topological photonics. Here, we demonstrate second-harmonic generation (SHG) via nonlinear interaction of double topological valley-Hall kink modes in all-dielectric photonic crystals (PhCs). We first show that two topological frequency band gaps can be created around a pair of frequencies, omega(0) and 2(omega 0), by gapping out the corresponding Dirac points in two-dimensional honeycomb PhCs. Valley-Hall kink modes along a kink-type domain wall interface between two PhCs placed together in a mirror-symmetric manner are generated within the two frequency band gaps. Importantly, through full-wave simulations and mode dispersion analysis, we demonstrate that tunable, bidirectional phase-matched SHG via nonlinear interaction of the valley-Hall kink modes inside the two band gaps can be achieved. In particular, by using Stokes parameters associated with the magnetic part of the valley-Hall kink modes, we introduce the concept of SHG directional dichroism, which is employed to characterize optical probes for sensing chiral molecules. Our work opens up avenues toward topologically protected nonlinear frequency mixing and active photonic devices implemented in all-dielectric material platforms.

Abstract:Metasurfaces are ultrathin structured surfaces that are capable of manipulating the propagation of light in an arbitrary manner. It has been endowed with various functionalities ranging from imaging to holography. In contrast to linear optical processes, the control of wave propagation and diffraction over nonlinear optical processes such as harmonic generations had been much more limited until recently, when the concept of metasurfaces was extended from linear optics to the nonlinear optical regime for manipulating the generation of harmonic signals in an unprecedented level. The key to this recent development lies in the local control over the phase and/or the amplitude of nonlinear polarizability. This new development has led to an array of interesting optical phenomena and nonlinear optical devices that went beyond what had been achieved with traditional nonlinear optical elements. In this review, we summarize the latest progress in controlling the local phase of nonlinearity with plasmonic metasurfaces, with a focus on nonlinear geometric Berry phase and wavefront engineering, and various device applications with nonlinear metasurfaces.
Nonlinear dielectric geometric-phase metasurface with simultaneous structure and lattice symmetry design

Abstract:In this work, we utilize thin dielectric meta-atoms placed on a silver substrate to efficiently enhance and manipulate the third harmonic generation. We theoretically and experimentally reveal that when the structural symmetry of the meta-atom is incompatible with the lattice symmetry of an array, some generalized nonlinear geometric phases appear, which offers new possibilities for harmonic generation control beyond the accessible symmetries governed by the selection rule. The underlying mechanism is attributed to the modified rotation of the effective principal axis of a dense meta-atom array, where the strong coupling among the units gives rise to a generalized linear geometric phase modulation on the pump light. Therefore, nonlinear geometric phases carried by the third-harmonic emissions are the natural result of the wave-mixing process among the modes excited at the fundamental frequency. This mechanism further points out a new strategy to predict the nonlinear geometric phases delivered by the nanostructures according to their linear responses. Our design is simple and efficient, and offers alternatives for the nonlinear meta-devices that are capable of flexible photon generation and manipulation.

Plasmonic metasurfaces for controlling harmonic generations

Abstract:In this chapter, we limit our discussion to nonlinear plasmonic metasurfaces and focus on recent progress in nonlinear plasmonic metasurfaces for manipulating second harmonic generation signals. We start with the discussion of selection rules of nonlinear harmonic generation for a circularly polarized incident fundamental beam. We then proceed with the different approaches for achieving phase control in a nonlinear metasurface and the various devices based on this effect. We further discuss the nonlinear chiral effect in a metasurface with planar chirality. Finally, we conclude and give an outlook on future directions.

Abstract:Nonlinear metasurfaces and photonic crystals provide a significant way to generate and manipulate nonlinear signals owing to the resonance- and symmetry-based light-matter interactions supported by the artificial structures. However, the nonlinear conversion efficiency is generally limited by the angular dispersion of optical resonances especially in nonparaxial photonics. Here, we propose a metagrating realizing a quasi-bound-state in the continuum in a flat band to dramatically improve the third harmonic generation (THG) efficiency. A superior operating angular range is achieved based on the interlayer and intralayer couplings, which are introduced by breaking the mirror symmetry of the metagrating. We demonstrate the relation of angular dispersion between the nonlinear and linear responses at different incident angles. We also elucidate the mechanism of these off-axis flat-band-based nonlinear conversions through different mode decomposition. Our scheme provides a robust and analytical way for nonparaxial nonlinear generation and paves the way for further applications such as wide-angle nonlinear information transmission and enhanced nonlinear generation under tight focusing.

Abstract:Nonlinear Pancharatnam-Berry phase metasurfaces facilitate the nontrivial phase modulation for frequency conversion processes by leveraging photon-spin dependent nonlinear geometric-phases. However, plasmonic metasurfaces show some severe limitation for nonlinear frequency conversion due to the intrinsic high ohmic loss and low damage threshold of plasmonic nanostructures. Here, we systematically study the nonlinear geometric-phases associated with the third-harmonic generation process occurring in all-dielectric metasurfaces, which are composed of silicon nanofins with different in-plane rotational symmetries. We find that the wave coupling among different field components of the resonant fundamental field gives rise to the appearance of different nonlinear geometric-phases of the generated third-harmonic signals. The experimental observations of the nonlinear beam steering and nonlinear holography realized in this work by all-dielectric geometric-phase metasurfaces are well explained with our developed theory. Our work offers a new physical picture to understand the nonlinear optical process occurring at nanoscale dielectric resonators and will help in the design of nonlinear metasurfaces with tailored phase properties.

Abstract:Metasurface optical holography represents an important technique for developing ultrathin diffractive optical elements. Among various designs, the metasurface devices with strong chiroptical responses offer a new degree of freedom to manipulate light fields. However, in a linear optical regime, it is usually complicated to realize strong chiroptical properties with metasurfaces. Here, nonlinear chiroptical holography using the Pancharatnam–Berry phase controlled achiral metasurface is reported. The metasurface consists of mirror symmetry breaking plasmonic meta‐atoms. Under the pumping of a fundamental wave, the achiral meta‐atoms radiate second harmonic waves with strong circular dichroism and spin dependent Pancharatnam–Berry phase. Both the amplitude and phase of the second harmonic waves can be independently and simultaneously controlled at the subwavelength scale. As a proof of concept, the spin selective nonlinear chiroptical holography is experimentally demonstrated through the second harmonic process on gold plasmonic metasurfaces. The proposed nonlinear metasurface with Pancharatnam–Berry phase and chiroptical properties open new avenues for multifunctional wavefront engineering and optical information processing.

Abstract:Dielectric metasurfaces have made significant advancements in the past decade for enhancing light–matter interaction at the nanoscale. Particularly, bound states in the continuum (BICs) based on dielectric metasurfaces have been employed to enhance nonlinear harmonic generation. However, conventional nonlinear metasurfaces are typically fixed in their operating wavelength after fabrication. In this work, we numerically demonstrate tunable third harmonic generation (THG) by integrating a dielectric metasurface with the phase-change material Ge 2 Sb 2 Te 5 (GST). The hybrid phase-change metasurface can support two BICs with different electromagnetic origins, which are transformed into two high-Q quasi-BICs through the introduction of structural asymmetry. The two quasi-BICs are selectively excited by controlling the polarization of incident light, and their wavelengths are tunable due to the phase transition of GST. Notably, the efficiency of THG is significantly enhanced at the fundamental wavelengths corresponding to the two quasi-BICs, and the operating wavelength for THG enhancement can be dynamically tuned through the GST phase transition. Furthermore, the wavelength of THG enhancement can be further tuned by manipulating the polarization of pump light. Additionally, a high-Q analog of electromagnetically induced transparency is numerically achieved through the interaction between a low-Q Mie resonance and a quasi-BIC mode, which also improves the THG efficiency. The high-Q polarization-controlled hybrid phase-change metasurface holds promise for applications in dynamically tunable nonlinear optical devices.

Abstract:Nonlinear dielectric metasurfaces provide a promising approach to control and manipulate frequency conversion optical processes at the nanoscale, thus facilitating both advances in fundamental research and the development of new practical applications in photonics, lasing, and sensing. Here, we employ symmetry-broken metasurfaces made of centrosymmetric amorphous silicon for resonantly enhanced second- and third-order nonlinear optical response. Exploiting the rich physics of optical quasi-bound states in the continuum and guided mode resonances, we comprehensively study through rigorous numerical calculations the relative contribution of surface and bulk effects to second-harmonic generation (SHG) and the bulk contribution to third-harmonic generation (THG) from the meta-atoms. Next, we experimentally achieve optical resonances with high quality factors, which greatly boosts light-matter interaction, resulting in about 550 times SHG enhancement and nearly 5000-fold increase of THG. A good agreement between theoretical predictions and experimental measurements is observed. To gain deeper insights into the physics of the investigated nonlinear optical processes, we further numerically study the relation between nonlinear emission and the structural asymmetry of the metasurface and reveal that the generated harmonic signals arising from linear sharp resonances are highly dependent on the asymmetry of the meta-atoms. Our work suggests a fruitful strategy to enhance the harmonic generation and effectively control different orders of harmonics in all-dielectric metasurfaces, enabling the development of efficient active photonic nanodevices.

Abstract:The nonlinearities at terahertz (THz) frequencies have been recognized as key and promising approaches to advance the development of high-frequency THz sources via the harmonic generation process, which lies at the core of THz technology. However, the high-performance nonlinear THz materials possessing extreme conversion efficiency, high-volume on-chip integration, and room-temperature operation are still seemingly missing. Here, we propose a nonlinear metasurface for efficient THz third-harmonic generation (THG) based on the nonperturbative nonlinearity of doped silicon. By integrating aluminum grating, the significantly enhanced local field drives the intrinsic nonlinearity of silicon to the nonperturbation regime, where the conversion efficiency of THz THG approaching maximum can be achieved under moderate pump from table-top sources at ambient temperature. The measurements demonstrate that the nonlinear responses of metasurfaces are similar to 1000 times stronger than the plain silicon film. Such a platform also allows us to experimentally obtain the nonlinear susceptibilities of silicon at perturbation and nonperturbation regimes, which are crucial for understanding the essences of nonlinear THz-matter interactions but scarcely available for most materials in this part of the spectrum. Our findings may open an avenue toward CMOS-compatible, room-temperature, and efficient THz sources and nonlinear electronics.
On-chip optical wavefront shaping by transverse spin induced Pancharatanam-Berry phase

Abstract:Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) metasurfaces can be applied to manipulate the phase and polarization of light within subwavelength thickness. The underlying mechanism is attributed to the geometric phase originating from the longitudinal spin of light. Here, we demonstrate a new type of PB geometric phase derived from the intrinsic transverse spin of guided light. Using full-wave numerical simulations, we show that the rotation of a metallic nano bar sitting on a metal substrate can induce a geometric phase covering 2$\pi$ full range for the surface plasmons carrying intrinsic transverse spin. Specially, the geometric phase is different for the surface plasmons propagating in opposite directions due to spin-momentum locking. We apply the geometric phase to design metasurfaces to manipulate the wavefront of surface plasmons to achieve steering and focusing. Our work provides a new mechanism for on-chip light manipulations with potential applications in designing ultra-compact optical devices for imaging and sensing.

Abstract:Abstract Extreme terahertz (THz) science and technologies, the next disruptive frontier in nonlinear optics, provide multifaceted capabilities for exploring strong light‐matter interactions in a variety of physical systems. However, current techniques involve the need for an extremely high‐field free space THz source that is difficult to generate and has limited investigations to a rather weak and linear regime of light‐matter interactions. Therefore, new approaches are being sought for the tight confinement of THz waves that can induce nonlinear effects. Here, a nonlinear “tera‐nano” metasurface is demonstrated exhibiting extremely large THz nonlinearity and sensitive self‐modulation of resonances at moderate incident THz field strengths. A record deep‐subwavelength (≈λ/33 000) confinement of strongly enhanced ( ≈ 3200) THz field in a nano‐gap (15 nm) exhibits remarkable THz field‐tailored nonlinearity. Further, ultrafast injection of photocarriers reveals a competition between nonlinear THz field‐induced intervalley scattering and optically driven interband excitations. The results on “tera‐nano” metasurfaces enable a novel platform to realize enhanced nonlinear nano/micro composites for field‐sensitive extreme THz nonlinear applications without the need for intense THz light sources.

Intrinsic nonlinear geometric phase in SHG from zincblende crystal symmetry media

Abstract:We demonstrate that AlGaAs thin films and metasurfaces generate a distinct intrinsic nonlinear geometric phase in their second harmonic signals, differing significantly from previous studies on nonlinear dielectric, plasmonic, or hybrid metasurfaces. Unlike conventional observations, our study reveals that the second harmonic phase remains unaffected by the linear optical response at both pump and harmonic wavelengths, introducing a novel realm of achievable phase functions yet to be explored. Furthermore, we explore the interplay between this intrinsic nonlinear geometric phase and the geometric phase induced by rotations of nanoresonators within metasurface arrangements. Our findings extend the capabilities of nonlinear wavefront shaping metasurfaces, exploiting phase manipulation to uncover unique phenomena exclusive to the nonlinear regime.

Topological Photonic Phase in Chiral Hyperbolic Metamaterials

Abstract:Recently the possibility of achieving one-way backscatter immune transportation of light by mimicking the topological order present within certain solid state systems, such as topological insulators, has received much attention. Thus far however, demonstrations of non-trivial topology in photonics have relied on photonic crystals with precisely engineered lattice structures, periodic on the scale of the operational wavelength and composed of finely tuned, complex materials. Here we propose a novel effective medium approach towards achieving topologically protected photonic surface states robust against disorder on all length scales and for a wide range of material parameters. Remarkably, the non-trivial topology of our metamaterial design results from the Berry curvature arising from the transversality of electromagnetic waves in a homogeneous medium. Our investigation therefore acts to bridge the gap between the advancing field of topological band theory and classical optical phenomena such as the Spin Hall effect of light. The effective medium route to topological phases will pave the way for highly compact one-way transportation of electromagnetic waves in integrated photonic circuits.

Abstract:High-refractive-index nanostructures offer versatile opportunities for nonlinear optical effects, due to their ability to strongly confine field into a subwavelength scale. Herein, we propose a rhomboidal amorphous silicon metasurface to realize high-efficiency dual-band third-harmonic generation (THG), based on the supported dual quasi-bound states in the continuum (Q-BICs). Owing to the very large field confinement inside the metasurface empowered by Q-BICs, the THG efficiency up to 3.74 × 10−3 with the peak pump intensity of 30 MW/cm2 is observed. Meanwhile, thanks to the very high quality factor of Q-BICs, the ultra-narrow nonlinear process with the full width at half maximum less than 1 nm is also witnessed, suggesting the good monochromaticity. Interestingly, the dual-band THG is verified to be polarization-dependent and polarization-insensitive, respectively. The finite element method simulations exhibit that the polarization-dependent THG is attributed to the Q-BIC driven by the electric quadrupole characterized by a pair of anti-parallel electric dipoles along the x axis, which are only excited by the x-linearly polarized light. On the contrary, the polarization-insensitive THG is enabled by another Q-BIC governed by the magnetic dipole resonance with circular electric field vectors, which can be excited by any linearly polarized light. The polarization-controlled and polarization-independent dual-band THG enabled by the physics of Q-BICs would open possibilities for designing switchable nonlinear light sources. The proposed dual Q-BICs scheme undoubtedly can serve as a universal recipe for other nonlinear effects, including sum-frequency generation, difference-frequency generation, and high-order harmonics.

Abstract:Nonlinear wavefront control is a crucial requirement in realizing nonlinear optical applications with metasurfaces. Numerous aspects of nonlinear frequency conversion and wavefront control have been demonstrated for plasmonic metasurfaces. However, several disadvantages limit their applicability in nonlinear nanophotonics, including high dissipative loss and low optical damage threshold. In contrast, it has been shown that metasurfaces made of high-index dielectrics can provide strong nonlinear responses. Regardless of the recent progress in nonlinear optical processes using all-dielectric nanostructures and metasurfaces, much less advancement has been made in realizing a full wavefront control directly with the generation process. Here, we demonstrate the nonlinear wavefront control for the third-harmonic generation with a silicon metasurface. We use a Pancharatnam-Berry phase approach to encode phase gradients and holographic images on nanostructured silicon metasurfaces. We experimentally demonstrate the polarization-dependent wavefront control and the reconstruction of an encoded hologram at the third-harmonic wavelength with high fidelity. Further, we show that holographic multiplexing is possible by utilizing the polarization states of the third harmonic generation. Our approach eases design and fabrication processes and paves the way to an easy to use toolbox for nonlinear optical wavefront control with all-dielectric metasurfaces.

Abstract:The nonlinear responses of different materials provide useful mechanisms for optical switching, low noise amplification, and harmonic frequency generation. However, the nonlinear processes usually have an extremely weak nature and require high input power to be excited. To alleviate this severe limitation, we propose new designs of ultrathin nonlinear metasurfaces composed of patterned graphene micro-ribbons to significantly enhance third harmonic generation (THG) at far-infrared and terahertz (THz) frequencies. The incident wave is tightly confined and significantly boosted along the surface of graphene in these configurations due to the excitation of highly localized plasmons. The bandwidth of the resonant response becomes narrower due to the introduction of a metallic substrate below the graphene micro-ribbons, which leads to zero transmission and standing waves inside the intermediate dielectric spacer layer. The enhancement of the incident field, combined with the large nonlinear conductivity of graphene, can dramatically increase the THG conversion efficiency by several orders of magnitude. In addition, the resonant frequency of the metasurface can be adjusted by dynamically tuning the Fermi energy of graphene via electrical or chemical doping. As a result, the third harmonic generated wave can be optimized and tuned to be emitted at different frequencies without the need to change the nonlinear metasurface geometry. The proposed nonlinear metasurfaces provide a new way to realize compact and efficient nonlinear sources at the far-infrared and THz frequency ranges, as well as new frequency generation and wave mixing devices which are expected to be useful for nonlinear THz spectroscopy and noninvasive THz imaging applications.
