Abstract:We demonstrate that AlGaAs thin films and metasurfaces generate a distinct intrinsic nonlinear geometric phase in their second harmonic signals, differing significantly from previous studies on nonlinear dielectric, plasmonic, or hybrid metasurfaces. Unlike conventional observations, our study reveals that the second harmonic phase remains unaffected by the linear optical response at both pump and harmonic wavelengths, introducing a novel realm of achievable phase functions yet to be explored. Furthermore, we explore the interplay between this intrinsic nonlinear geometric phase and the geometric phase induced by rotations of nanoresonators within metasurface arrangements. Our findings extend the capabilities of nonlinear wavefront shaping metasurfaces, exploiting phase manipulation to uncover unique phenomena exclusive to the nonlinear regime.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper discusses a new phenomenon of nonlinear geometric phase in zinc-blend crystal materials, such as AlGaAs thin films and metasurfaces. Traditional views suggest that the phase of the second harmonic (SH) is influenced by the linear optical response of the incident light, but the study found that the SH phase of this new material is not affected by the linear optical response of the pumping light or harmonic wavelength, opening up unexplored areas of phase functions. The paper points out that although AlGaAs behaves isotropically in linear optics, the anisotropy of its nonlinear second-order tensor only affects the SH signal, generating a purely nonlinear geometric phase. Different SH phase functions can be achieved by rotating the crystal axis, enhancing phase manipulation capabilities. In addition, the study also examined the effect of rotating nanoresonators on the nonlinear geometric phase in metasurfaces, revealing a new phase function unique to the nonlinear regime. The experimental results show that when the crystal axis is rotated, the phase of SH is proportional to the rotation angle, while the conversion efficiency varies with the rotation angle. This indicates that the nonlinear wavefront shape can be controlled by adjusting the crystal axis or the arrangement of resonators, achieving unique control over nonlinear optical processes, and this method is only effective for generated nonlinear light without dependence on the pumping frequency. In summary, this paper addresses the problem of how to achieve finer wavefront manipulation in nonlinear optics using nonlinear geometric phase, proposes a new strategy different from previous methods, and demonstrates its potential in designing new applications for nonlinear metasurfaces.
