Abstract:In this paper, we describe several stationary conditions on weak solutions to the inhomogeneous Landau-Lifshitz equation, which ensure the partial regularity. For certain class of proper stationary weak solutions, a compactness result of the solutions, a finite Hausdorff measure result of the t -slice energy concentration sets and an asymptotic limit result of the Radon measures are proved. We also present a subtle rectifiability result for the energy concentration set of certain sequence of strong stationary weak solutions.

Abstract:We consider the initial-boundary value problem (IBVP) of 2D inviscid heat conductive Boussinesq equations with nonlinear heat diffusion over a bounded domain with smooth boundary. Under slip boundary condition of velocity and the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition for temperature, we show that there exists a unique global smooth solution to the IBVP for H3initial data. Moreover, we show that the temperature converges exponentially to zero as time goes to infinity, and the velocity and vorticity are uniformly bounded in time.

Abstract:We consider the weak solutions to the Euler-Fourier system describing the motion of a compressible heat conducting gas. Employing the method of convex integration, we show that the problem admits infinitely many global-in-time weak solutions for any choice of smooth initial data. We also show that for any initial distribution of the density and temperature, there exists an initial velocity such that the associated initial-value problem possesses infinitely many solutions that conserve the total energy.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the partial regularity of the solutions for the three-dimensional Boussinesq equations. We first prove a criterion of local Hölder continuous of the suitable weak solutions of the Boussinesq equations, and show that one-dimensional Hausdorff measure of the singular point set is zero. Secondly, we present a local uniform gradient estimate on the suitable weak solutions and assert that the local behavior of the solution can be dominated by some scaled quantities, such as the scaled local L3-norm of the velocity. Besides, when the initial data v0 and θ0 decay sufficiently rapidly at ∞, the distribution of the regular point set of the suitable weak solutions is also considered. Based on it, one can find that MHD equations are more similar to Navier–Stokes equations than Boussinesq equations. Finally, we give a local regularity criterion of the suitable weak solutions near the boundary.

Abstract:We study the Navier-Stokes-Darcy-Boussinesq system that models the thermal convection of a fluid overlying a saturated porous medium in a general decomposed domain. In both two and three spatial dimensions, we first prove the existence of global weak solutions to the initial boundary value problem subject to the Lions and Beavers-Joseph-Saffman-Jones interface conditions. The proof is based on a proper time-implicit discretization scheme combined with the Leray-Schauder principle and compactness arguments. Next, we establish a weak-strong uniqueness result such that a weak solution coincides with a strong solution emanating from the same initial data as long as the latter exists.

Abstract:In this paper we study the non-degenerate and partially degenerate Boussinesq equations on a closed surface Sigma. When Sigma has intrinsic curvature of finite Lipschitz norm, we prove the existence of global strong solutions to the Cauchy problem of the Boussinesq equations with full or partial dissipations. The issues of uniqueness and singular limits (vanishing viscosity/vanishing thermal diffusivity) are also addressed. In addition, we establish a breakdown criterion for the strong solutions for the case of zero viscosity and zero thermal diffusivity. These appear to be among the first results for Boussinesq systems on Riemannian manifolds.

Abstract:This paper studies solutions of the two-dimensional incompressible Boussinesq equations with fractional dissipation. The spatial domain is a periodic box. The Boussinesq equations concerned here govern the coupled evolution of the fluid velocity and the temperature and have applications in fluid mechanics and geophysics. When the dissipation is in the supercritical regime (the sum of the fractional powers of the Laplacians in the velocity and the temperature equations is less than 1), the classical solutions of the Boussinesq equations are not known to be global in time. Leray–Hopf type weak solutions do exist. This paper proves that such weak solutions become eventually regular (smooth after some time T>0$$T>0$$) when the fractional Laplacian powers are in a suitable supercritical range. This eventual regularity is established by exploiting the regularity of a combined quantity of the vorticity and the temperature as well as the eventual regularity of a generalized supercritical surface quasi-geostrophic equation.

Abstract:The continuity of the kinetic energy is an important property of incompressible viscous fluid flows. We show that for any prescribed finite energy divergence-free initial data there exist infinitely many global in time weak solutions with smooth energy profiles to both the 3D deterministic and stochastic incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. In the stochastic case the constructed solutions are probabilistically strong. Our proof introduces a new backward convex integration scheme with delicate selections of initial relaxed solutions, backward time intervals, and energy profiles. Our initial relaxed solutions satisfy a new time-dependent frequency truncated NSE, different from the usual approximations as it decreases the large Reynolds error near the initial time, which plays a key role in the construction.

Abstract:We study the global well-posedness and stability/instability of perturbations near a special type of hydrostatic equilibrium associated with the 2D Boussinesq equations without buoyancy (a.k.a. thermal) diffusion on a bounded domain subject to stress-free boundary conditions. The boundary of the domain is not necessarily smooth and may have corners such as in the case of rectangles. We achieve three goals. First, we establish the global-in-time existence and uniqueness of large-amplitude classical solutions. Efforts are made to reduce the regularity assumptions on the initial data. Second, we obtain the large-time asymptotics of the full nonlinear perturbation. In particular, we show that the kinetic energy and the first order derivatives of the velocity field converge to zero as time goes to infinity, regardless of the magnitude of the initial data, and the flow stratifies in the vertical direction in a weak topology. Third, we prove the linear stability of the hydrostatic equilibrium T(y) satisfying T′(y)=α>0, and the linear instability of periodic perturbations when T′(y)=α<0. Numerical simulations are supplemented to corroborate the analytical results and predict some phenomena that are not proved.

Abstract:This paper furthers our studies on the stability problem for perturbations near hydrostatic equilibrium of the 2D Boussinesq equations without thermal diffusion and solves some of the problems left open in Doering et al. (Physica D 376(377):144–159, 2018). We focus on the periodic domain to avoid the complications due to the boundary. We present several results at two levels: the linear stability and the nonlinear stability levels. Our linear stability results state that the velocity field (mathbf {u}) associated with any initial perturbation converges uniformly to 0 and the temperature ( heta ) converges to an explicit function depending only on y as t tends to infinity. In addition, we obtain an explicit algebraic convergence rate for the velocity field in the (L^2)-sense. Our nonlinear stability results state that any initial velocity small in (L^2) and any initial temperature small in (L^2) lead to a stable solution of the full nonlinear perturbation equations in large time. Furthermore, we show that the temperature is eventually stratified and converges to a function depending only on y if we know it admits a certain uniform-in-time bound. An explicit decay rate for the velocity in (L^2) is also ensured if we make assumption on the high-order norms of (mathbf {u}) and ( heta ).
