Abstract:We investigate a model with an extended O(2) symmetry in two and three dimensions, using the combination of extensive Monte Carlo simulations and the finite-size scaling. On this basis, we establish rich phase diagrams, which are constituted by O(2) critical lines. From various prospectives, the ordered states on the phase diagrams can be classified into intraspecies and interspecies correlated phases, quasi-long-range and long-range ordered phases, or ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases. We furthermore show that the dimensionality effect acts on not only the ordering property, but also the topological structure of the phase diagram.

Abstract:In this paper, we mainly study the dynamic properties of a class of three-dimensional SIR models. First, we use the complete discriminant theory of polynomials to obtain the parameter conditions for the topological types of each fixed point. Second, by employing the centre manifold theorem and bifurcation theory, we prove that the system may undergo transcritical, flip and Neimark–Sacker bifurcations at fixed points. Finally, we simulated all the codimension-1 bifurcations. We found that the system also has codimension-2 bifurcations, i.e. 1:2, 1:3 and 1:4 strong resonances.

Abstract:Singular cycles (homoclinic orbits and heteroclinic cycles) play an important role in the study of chaotic dynamics of dynamical systems. This paper provides the coexistence of singular cycles that intersect the switching manifold transversely at two points in a class of three-dimensional two-zone piecewise affine systems. Moreover, the switching manifold of the systems is constructed by two perpendicular planes. Different to the three-dimensional piecewise affine systems with a switching plane, the system can ensure the coexistence of two homoclinic orbits to the same one equilibrium point and two heteroclinic cycles constructing by three heteroclinic orbits. In addition, three examples with simulations of the singular cycles are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the results.

Abstract:This paper investigates a Cahn-Hilliard-Swift-Hohenberg system, focusing on a three-species chemical mixture subject to physical constraints on volume fractions. The resulting system leads to complex patterns involving a separation into phases as typical of the Cahn-Hilliard equation and small scale stripes and dots as seen in the Swift-Hohenberg equation. We introduce singular potentials of logarithmic type to enhance the model's accuracy in adhering to essential physical constraints. The paper establishes the existence and uniqueness of weak solutions within this extended framework. The insights gained contribute to a deeper understanding of phase separation in complex systems, with potential applications in materials science and related fields. We introduce a stable finite element approximation based on an obstacle formulation. Subsequent numerical simulations demonstrate that the model allows for complex structures as seen in pigment patterns of animals and in porous polymeric materials.

From bubbles to clusters: Multiple solutions to the Allen--Cahn system

Abstract:We extend previous works on the multiplicity of solutions to the Allen-Cahn system on closed Riemannian manifolds by considering an arbitrary number of phases. Specifically, we show that on parallelizable manifolds, the number of solutions is bounded from below by topological invariants of the underlying manifold, provided the temperature parameter and volume constraint are sufficiently small. The Allen-Cahn system naturally arises in phase separation models, where solutions represent the distribution of distinct phases in a multi-component mixture. As the temperature parameter approaches zero, the system's energy approximates the multi-isoperimetric profile, leading to solutions concentrating in regions resembling isoperimetric clusters. For two or three phases, these results rely on classifying isoperimetric clusters. However, this classification remains incomplete for a larger number of phases. To address this technical issue, we employ a "volume-fixing variations" approach, enabling us to establish our results for any number of phases and small volume constraints. This offers deeper insights into phase separation phenomena on manifolds with arbitrary geometry.

Abstract:We analyse a first-order dynamical phase transition that takes place in the Fredrickson--Andersen (FA) model. We construct a two-dimensional spin system whose thermodynamic properties reproduce the dynamical large deviations of the FA model and we analyse this system numerically, comparing our results with finite-size scaling theory. This allows us to rationalise recent results for the FA model, including the exponential divergence of its susceptibility at phase coexistence. We also discuss a simple interfacial model that reproduces quantitatively the behaviour of the FA model at coexistence.

Abstract:Externally injected class-B lasers are shown to be approximately described by a reversible three-dimensional flow. For critical values of the external field such a model displays symmetry-breaking bifurcations, where the structure of space changes from conservative to dissipative either in a continuous or discontinuous manner. As a consequence, the coexistence of the two behaviors is observed in suitable parameter ranges. Symmetry breaking is shown to explain the onset of the very stable periodic solutions exhibited by the physical system. Such bifurcations are then studied in the simpler context of two-dimensional flows and recognized as degenerate codimension-2 phenomena. Generic normal forms are finally introduced which describe the local bifurcation unfolding.

Abstract:Scaling, universality, and renormalization are three pillars of modern critical phenomena. According to the hypothesis of universality, continuous phase transitions fall into classes mainly determined by spatial dimensionality and symmetry of the order parameter. The latter is usually reflected by the degeneracy of the ground state of the Hamiltonian. However, for certain systems at criticality, a higher symmetry emerges in the order parameter, and the associated critical behavior may become very rich. Such emergent symmetry has been found in spin ice systems, deconfined quantum critical points, high-${T}_{c}$ superconductors, and so forth, and are often accompanied by very interesting critical phenomena. New results presented here are based on Monte Carlo simulations and finite-size scaling of a series of $q$-state Potts models on the simple cubic lattice with ferromagnetic interactions in one lattice direction and antiferromagnetic interactions in the other two directions. The staggered magnetization appears to display an emergent continuous O($n$) symmetry with $n$=$q$-1, as illustrated by two-dimensional intersections of the distribution functions. Also the estimated critical exponents are consistent with the O($n$=$q$-1) universality classes.

Abstract:We study a d-dimensional lattice model of diffusing coalescing massive particles, with two parameters controlling deposition and evaporation of monomers. The unique stationary distribution for the system exhibits a phase transition in all dimensions d greater or equal to one between a growing phase, in which the expected mass is infinite at each site, and an exponential phase in which the expected mass is finite. We establish rigorous upper and lower bounds on the critical curve describing the phase transition for this system, and some asymptotics for large or small deposition rates.

Abstract:We investigate the two-dimensional $q=3$ and 4 Potts models with a variable interaction range by means of Monte Carlo simulations. We locate the phase transitions for several interaction ranges as expressed by the number $z$ of equivalent neighbors. For not too large $z$, the transitions fit well in the universality classes of the short-range Potts models. However, at longer ranges the transitions become discontinuous. For $q=3$ we locate a tricritical point separating the continuous and discontinuous transitions near $z=80$, and a critical fixed point between $z=8$ and 12. For $q=4$ the transition becomes discontinuous for $z > 16$. The scaling behavior of the $q=4$ model with $z=16$ approximates that of the $q=4$ merged critical-tricritical fixed point predicted by the renormalization scenario.

Abstract:We investigate a generic two-field Cahn-Hilliard model with variational and nonvariational coupling. It describes, for instance, passive and active ternary mixtures, respectively. Already a linear stability analysis of the homogeneous mixed state shows that activity not only allows for the usual large-scale stationary (Cahn-Hilliard) instability of the well-known passive case but also for small-scale stationary (Turing) and large-scale oscillatory (Hopf) instabilities. In consequence of the Turing instability, activity may completely suppress the usual coarsening dynamics. In a fully nonlinear analysis, we first briefly discuss the passive case before focusing on the active case. Bifurcation diagrams and selected direct time simulations are presented that allow us to establish that nonvariational coupling (i) can partially or completely suppress coarsening and (ii) may lead to the emergence of drifting and oscillatory states. Abstract:The stability and the two-parameter bifurcation of a two-dimensional discrete Gierer–Meinhardt system are investigated in this paper. The analysis is carried out both theoretically and numerically. It is found that the model can exhibit codimension-two bifurcations ([Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text] strong resonances) for certain critical values at the positive fixed point. The normal forms are obtained by using a series of affine transformations and bifurcation theory. Numerical simulations including bifurcation diagrams, phase portraits and basins of attraction are conducted to validate the theoretical predictions, which can also display some interesting and complex dynamical behaviors.
Dynamical phase transitions in the non-reciprocal Ising model

Abstract:Non-reciprocal interactions in many-body systems lead to time-dependent states, commonly observed in biological, chemical, and ecological systems. The stability of these states in the thermodynamic limit, as well as the criticality of the phase transition from static to time-dependent states remains an open question. To tackle these questions, we study a minimalistic system endowed with non-reciprocal interactions: an Ising model with two spin species having opposing goals. The mean-field equation predicts three stable phases: disordered, ordered, and a time-dependent swap phase. Large scale numerical simulations support the following: (i) in 2D, the swap phase is destabilized by defects; (ii) in 3D, the swap phase is stable, and has the properties of a time-crystal; (iii) the transition from disorder to swap in 3D is characterized by the critical exponents of the 3D XY model, in agreement with the emerging continuous symmetry of time translation invariance; (iv) when the two species have fully anti-symmetric couplings, the static-order phase is unstable in any dimension due to droplet growth; (v) in the general case of asymmetric couplings, static order can be restored by a droplet-capture mechanism preventing the droplets from growing indefinitely. We provide details on the full phase diagram which includes first- and second-order-like phase transitions and study the coarsening dynamics of the swap as well as the static-order phases.

Quantitative analysis of phase transitions in two-dimensional XY models using persistent homology

Abstract:We use persistent homology and persistence images as an observable of three different variants of the two-dimensional XY model in order to identify and study their phase transitions. We examine models with the classical XY action, a topological lattice action, and an action with an additional nematic term. In particular, we introduce a new way of computing the persistent homology of lattice spin model configurations and, by considering the fluctuations in the output of logistic regression and k-nearest neighbours models trained on persistence images, we develop a methodology to extract estimates of the critical temperature and the critical exponent of the correlation length. We put particular emphasis on finite-size scaling behaviour and producing estimates with quantifiable error. For each model we successfully identify its phase transition(s) and are able to get an accurate determination of the critical temperatures and critical exponents of the correlation length.
