Abstract:We characterize diffeomorphisms that are C-1 away from homoclinic tangencies by using dominated splittings on the C-1 preperiodic sets. More precisely, we prove that a diffeomorphism f cannot be C-1 approximated by systems with homoclinic tangencies if and only if for all 1 less than or equal to i less than or equal to d(-1), the C-1 i-preperiodic set P-*(i) (f) of f has i-dominated splitting.

Abstract:Let f : M -> M be a C-1 diffeomorphism with a dominated splitting on a compact Riemanian manifold M without boundary. We state and prove several sufficient conditions for the topological entropy of f to be positive. The conditions deal with the dynamical behaviour of the (non -necessarily invariant) Lebesgue measure. In particular, if the Lebesgue measure is (5 recurrent then the entropy of f is positive. We give counterexamples showing that these sufficient conditions are not necessary. Finally, in the case of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms, we give a positive lower bound for the entropy relating it with the dimension of the unstable and stable sub-bundles.

Abstract:Let f:Td -> Td be an Anosov diffeomorphism whose linearization A is an element of GL(d,Z) is irreducible. Assume that f is also absolutely partially hyperbolic where a weak stable subbundle is considered as the center subbundle. We show that if the strong stable subbundle and the unstable subbundle are jointly integrable, then f is dynamically coherent and all foliations match corresponding linear foliation under the conjugacy to the linearization A. Moreover, f admits the finest dominated splitting in the weak stable subbundle with dimensions matching those for A$A$, and it has spectral rigidity along all these subbundles. In dimension 4, we also obtain a similar result by grouping the weak stable and unstable subbundles together as a center subbundle and assuming joint integrability of the strong stable and unstable subbundles. As an application, we show that for every symplectic diffeomorphism f is an element of Diff(omega)(2)(T-4) that is C-1-close to an irreducible nonconformal automorphism A is an element of Sp(4,Z), the extremal subbundles of f$f$ are jointly integrable if and only if f is smoothly conjugate to A$A$.

Abstract:We show the existence of large $\mathcal C^1$ open sets of area preserving endomorphisms of the two-torus which have no dominated splitting and are non-uniformly hyperbolic, meaning that Lebesgue almost every point has a positive and a negative Lyapunov exponent. The integrated Lyapunov exponents vary continuously with the dynamics in the $\mathcal C^1$ topology and can be taken as far away from zero as desired. Explicit real analytic examples are obtained by deforming linear endomorphisms, including expanding ones. The technique works in nearly every homotopy class and the examples are stably ergodic (in fact Bernoulli), provided that the linear map has no eigenvalue of modulus one.

Abstract:For a $C^{r}$ $(r>1)$ diffeomorphism on a compact manifold that admits a dominated splitting, this paper establishes the upper semi-continuity of the entropy map. More precisely, given a sequence of invariant measures with only positive Lyapunov exponents along a sub-bundle and non-positive Lyapunov exponents along another sub-bundle, the upper limit of their metric entropies is less than or equal to the entropy of the limiting measure.

Abstract:In this paper we study the connectedness of the level sets of integrable systems that have only non-degenerate singular points and extend complexity one $T$-spaces with proper moment maps. Our main result states that if there are no singular points with a hyperbolic block and connected $T$-stabilizer, then each level set is connected. Moreover, we prove that the above condition is necessary if either some reduced space is simply connected or the moment map for the integrable system is generic in a natural sense.

Abstract:For systems of evolutionary partial differential equations the tau-structure is an important notion which originated from the deep relation between integrable systems and quantum field theories. We show that, under a certain non-degeneracy condition, existence of a tau-structure implies integrability. As an example, we apply this principle to provide a new proof of the integrability of the Drinfeld--Sokolov hierarchy associated to an arbitrary Kac--Moody algebra and a choice of a vertex of its Dynkin diagram.

Abstract:Motivated by a paper of Bolsinov and Taimanov DG/9911193 we consider non-holonomic situation and exhibit examples of sub-Riemannian metrics with integrable geodesic flows and positive topological entropy. Moreover the Riemannian examples are obtained as "holonomization" of sub-Riemannian ones. A feature of non-holonomic situation is non-compactness of the phase space. We also exhibit a Liouvulle-integrable Hamiltonian system with topological entropy of all integrals positive.

Abstract:A bstract A remarkable result at the intersection of number theory and group theory states that the order of a finite group G (denoted |G| ) is divisible by the dimension d R of any irreducible complex representation of G . We show that the integer ratios $$ {\left|G\right|}^2/{d}_R^2 $$ G 2 / d R 2 are combinatorially constructible using finite algorithms which take as input the amplitudes of combinatoric topological strings ( G -CTST) of finite groups based on 2D Dijkgraaf-Witten topological field theories ( G -TQFT2). The ratios are also shown to be eigenvalues of handle creation operators in G -TQFT2/ G -CTST. These strings have recently been discussed as toy models of wormholes and baby universes by Marolf and Maxfield, and Gardiner and Megas. Boundary amplitudes of the G -TQFT2/ G -CTST provide algorithms for combinatoric constructions of normalized characters. Stringy S-duality for closed G -CTST gives a dual expansion generated by disconnected entangled surfaces. There are universal relations between G -TQFT2 amplitudes due to the finiteness of the number K of conjugacy classes. These relations can be labelled by Young diagrams and are captured by null states in an inner product constructed by coupling the G -TQFT2 to a universal TQFT2 based on symmetric group algebras. We discuss the scenario of a 3D holographic dual for this coupled theory and the implications of the scenario for the factorization puzzle of 2D/3D holography raised by wormholes in 3D.

On regularity and rigidity of $2\times 2$ differential inclusions into non-elliptic curves

Abstract:We study differential inclusions $Du\in \Pi$ in an open set $\Omega\subset\mathbb R^2$, where $\Pi\subset \mathbb R^{2\times 2}$ is a compact connected $C^2$ curve without rank-one connections, but non-elliptic: tangent lines to $\Pi$ may have rank-one connections, so that classical regularity and rigidity results do not apply. For a wide class of such curves $\Pi$, we show that $Du$ is locally Lipschitz outside a discrete set, and is rigidly characterized around each singularity. Moreover, in the partially elliptic case where at least one tangent line to $\Pi$ has no rank-one connections, or under some topological restrictions on the tangent bundle of $\Pi$, there are no singularities. This goes well beyond previously known particular cases related to Burgers' equation and to the Aviles-Giga functional. The key is the identification and appropriate use of a general underlying structure: an infinite family of conservation laws, called entropy productions in reference to the theory of scalar conservation laws.

Abstract:We provide a characterization of homogeneous spaces under a reductive group scheme such that the geometric stabilizers are maximal tori. The quasi-split case over a semilocal base is of special interest and permits to answer a question raised by Marc Levine on homogeneous SL$_n$-spaces. At the end, we provide an application to the local-global principles for embeddings of {é}tale algebras with involution into central simple algebras with involution.

Abstract:In this work, we mainly deal with a two-dimensional singular holomorphic distribution $\mathcal{D}$ defined on $M$, in the two situations $M=\mathbb{P}^n$ or $M=(\mathbb{C}^n,0)$, tangent to a one-dimensional foliation $\mathcal{G}$ on $M$, and whose tangent sheaf $T_{\mathcal{D}}$ is locally free. We provide sufficient conditions on $\mathcal{G}$ so that there is another one-dimensional foliation $\mathcal{H}$ on $M$ tangent to $\mathcal{D}$, such that their respective tangent sheaves satisfy the splitting relation $T_{\mathcal{D}}=T_{\mathcal{G}} \oplus T_{\mathcal{H}}$. As an application, we show that if $\mathcal{F}$ is a codimension one holomorphic foliation on $\mathbb{P}^3$ with locally free tangent sheaf and tangent to a nontrivial holomorphic vector field on $\mathbb{P}^3$, then $T_{\mathcal{F}}$ splits. Some division results for vector fields and differential forms are also obtained.

Abstract:As is well-known, there exist nonconstant holomorphic maps from the plane into the Riemann sphere $\PP^1$ minus two points, the simplest example of which is an explicit realization of the uniformization map given by applying the exponential map and then composing with a Mobius transformation taking 0 and $\infty$ to the two given punctures. Likewise, we can map the plane into the sphere minus one point by simply applying directly a Mobius transformation taking $\infty$ to this puncture. In this paper we prove two parametrized versions of this uniformization result using different methods. We first present a slightly easier version using complex analysis, which allows us to construct the uniformizing maps more or less explicitly in terms of the initial coordinates given. Then we give the more general and coordinate invariant version, which we prove by extending Kodaira's theory of the Jacobian fibration to a family of singular curves constructed via algebraic geometry. Finally, using the results obtained with the Jacobian fibration, we obtain two equivalent conditions for an complex surface nonhyperbolically fibered over a complex curve to be holomorphically dominable by $\CC^2$. In theorem \ref{thm:surf} we show that this dominability is equivalent to the apparently weaker condition of the existence of a Zariski dense image of $\CC$ and equivalent to the quasiprojectivity of the base curve together with the nonnegativity of the orbifold Euler characteristic.
