Abstract:We present explicit inverses of two Brownian--type matrices, which are defined as Hadamard products of certain already known matrices. The matrices under consideration are defined by $3n-1$ parameters and their lower Hessenberg form inverses are expressed analytically in terms of these parameters. Such matrices are useful in the theory of digital signal processing and in testing matrix inversion algorithms.

Abstract:Multidimensional matrix inversions provide a powerful tool for studying multiple hypergeometric series. In order to extend this technique to elliptic hypergeometric series, we present three new multidimensional matrix inversions. As applications, we obtain a new $A_r$ elliptic Jackson summation, as well as several quadratic, cubic and quartic summation formulas.

Abstract:It is shown that the invertibility of a Toeplitz matrix can be determined through the solvability of two standard equations. The inverse matrix can be denoted as a sum of products of circulant matrices and upper triangular Toeplitz matrices. The stability of the inversion formula for a Toeplitz matrix is also considered.

Abstract:We calculate the Hankel determinants of sequences of Bernoulli polynomials. This corresponding Hankel matrix comes from statistically estimating the variance in nonparametric regression. Besides its entries' natural and deep connection with Bernoulli polynomials, a special case of the matrix can be constructed from a corresponding Vandermonde matrix. As a result, instead of asymptotic analysis, we give a direct proof of calculating an entry of its inverse.

Explicit formulas for the inverses of Toeplitz matrices, with applications

Abstract:We derive novel explicit formulas for the inverses of truncated block Toeplitz matrices that correspond to a multivariate minimal stationary process. The main ingredients of the formulas are the Fourier coefficients of the phase function attached to the spectral density of the process. The derivation of the formulas is based on a recently developed finite prediction theory applied to the dual process of the stationary process. We illustrate the usefulness of the formulas by two applications. The first one is a strong convergence result for solutions of general block Toeplitz systems for a multivariate short-memory process. The second application is closed-form formulas for the inverses of truncated block Toeplitz matrices corresponding to a multivariate ARMA process. The significance of the latter is that they provide us with a linear-time algorithm to compute the solutions of corresponding block Toeplitz systems.

Abstract:We establish necessary and sufficient conditions for invertibility of symmetric three-by-three block matrices having a double saddle-point structure \fb{that guarantee the unique solvability of double saddle-point systems}. We consider various scenarios, including the case where all diagonal blocks are allowed to be rank deficient. Under certain conditions related to the nullity of the blocks and intersections of their kernels, an explicit formula for the inverse is derived.

Abstract:We study the inverses of block Toeplitz matrices based on the analysis of the block cyclic displacement. New formulas for the inverses of block Toeplitz matrices are proposed. We show that the inverses of block Toeplitz matrices can be decomposed as a sum of products of block circulant matrices. In the scalar case, the inverse formulas are proved to be numerically forward stable, if the Toeplitz matrix is nonsingular and well conditioned.

Abstract:In this paper, by introducing new matrix operations and using a specific inverse relation, we establish the dual forms of the orthogonality relations for some well-known discrete and continuous $q$-orthogonal polynomials from the Askey-scheme such as the little and big $q$-Jacobi, $q$-Racah, (generalized) $q$-Laguerre, as well as the Askey-Wilson polynomials. As one of the most interesting results, we show that the Askey-Wilson $q$-beta integral represented in terms of the VWP-balanced $\,_8\phi_7$ series is just a dual form of the orthogonality relation of the Askey-Wilson polynomials.

Generalizing Frobenius Inversion to Quaternion Matrices

Abstract:In this paper we derive and analyze an algorithm for inverting quaternion matrices. The algorithm is an analogue of the Frobenius algorithm for the complex matrix inversion. On the theory side, we prove that our algorithm is more efficient that other existing methods. Moreover, our algorithm is optimal in the sense of the least number of complex inversions. On the practice side, our algorithm outperforms existing algorithms on randomly generated matrices. We argue that this algorithm can be used to improve the practical utility of recursive Strassen-type algorithms by providing the fastest possible base case for the recursive decomposition process when applied to quaternion matrices.

On positive Jacobi matrices with compact inverses

Abstract:We consider positive Jacobi matrices $J$ with compact inverses and consequently with purely discrete spectra. A number of properties of the corresponding sequence of orthogonal polynomials is studied including the convergence of their zeros, the vague convergence of the zero counting measures and of the Christoffel--Darboux kernels on the diagonal. Particularly, if the inverse of $J$ belongs to some Schatten class, we identify the asymptotic behaviour of the sequence of orthogonal polynomials and express it in terms of its regularized characteristic function. In the even more special case when the inverse of $J$ belongs to the trace class we derive various formulas for the orthogonality measure, eigenvectors of $J$ as well as for the functions of the second kind and related objects. These general results are given a more explicit form in the case when $-J$ is a generator of a Birth--Death process. Among others we provide a formula for the trace of the inverse of $J$. We illustrate our results by introducing and studying a modification of $q$-Laguerre polynomials corresponding to a determinate moment problem.

Abstract:We establish new explicit connections between classical (scalar) and matrix Gegenbauer polynomials, which result in new symmetries of the latter and further give access to several properties that have been out of reach before: generating functions, distribution of zeros for individual entries of the matrices and new type of differential-difference structure. We further speculate about other potentials of the connection formulas found. Part of our proofs makes use of creative telescoping in a matrix setting$-$the strategy which is not yet developed algorithmically.

Abstract:In the present paper, we aimed to discuss certain coefficient-related problems for the inverse functions associated with a bounded turning functions class subordinated with the exponential function. We calculated the bounds of some initial coefficients, the Fekete–Szegö-type inequality, and the estimation of Hankel determinants of second and third order. All of these bounds were proven to be sharp.

Abstract:In the classical Hardy space $H^2(\mathbb{D})$, it is well-known that the kernel of the Hankel operator is invariant under the action of shift operator S and sometimes nearly invariant under the action of backward shift operator $S^{*}$. It appears in this paper that kernels of finite rank perturbations of Hankel operators are almost shift invariant as well as nearly $S^*$- invariant with finite defect. This allows us to obtain a structure of the kernel in several important cases by applying a recent theorem due to Chalendar, Gallardo, and Partington.

Abstract:Whittaker functions on non-archimedean fields were first introduced in the work of Jacquet, and they were characterized explicitly by Shintani. We obtain an explicit inversion formula and a Plancherel formula for the $p$-adic Whittaker transform on $\text{GL}_n(\mathbb{Q}_p)$. As an application, integral representations are obtained for the local factors of certain symmetric power $L$-functions.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide explicit formulas for the exact inverses of the symmetric tridiagonal near-Toeplitz matrices characterized by weak diagonal dominance in the Toeplitz part. Furthermore, these findings extend to scenarios where the corners of the near Toeplitz matrices lack diagonal dominance ($|\widetilde{b}| < 1$). Additionally, we compute the row sums and traces of the inverse matrices, thereby deriving upper bounds for their infinite norms. To demonstrate the practical applicability of our theoretical results, we present numerical examples addressing numerical solution of the Fisher problem using the fixed point method. Our findings reveal that the convergence rates of fixed-point iterations closely align with the expected rates, and there is minimal disparity between the upper bounds and the infinite norm of the inverse matrix. Specifically, this observation holds true for $|b| = 2$ with $|\widetilde{b}| \geq 1$. In other cases, there exists potential to enhance the obtained upper bounds.

Abstract:The purpose of this manuscript is to derive the Hoffman-Wielandt inequality and its most general form for quaternion matrices. Diagonalizabilty of the block companion matrix of certain quadratic (linear) quaternion matrix polynomials is brought out. As a consequence, we prove that if $Q(\lambda)$ is another quadratic (linear) quaternion matrix polynomial, then under certain conditions on the coefficients, a generalization of the Hoffman-Wielandt inequality for their corresponding block companion matrices holds. We also prove that if $P(\lambda)$ is a quaternion matrix polynomial with unitary coefficients, then any right eigenvalue $\lambda_0$ of $P(\lambda)$ lies in the annular region $\frac{1}{2} < |\lambda_0| < 2$.
