Abstract:A new approach for dealing with the structural properties of polynomial and rational matrices at infinity is presented. In this first part of the development, the attention is focused on polynomial matrices. Some fundamental notions and definitions such as the notion of homogeneous form for polynomial matrices are introduced. These enable us to define important concepts such as the cancellation at infinity, coprimeness at infinity, etc. for polynomial matrices in precisely the same way as for their finite counterparts. We demonstrate that our approach allows interesting generalizations of some important conventional concepts.
On the invertibility of matrices with a double saddle-point structure

Abstract:We establish necessary and sufficient conditions for invertibility of symmetric three-by-three block matrices having a double saddle-point structure \fb{that guarantee the unique solvability of double saddle-point systems}. We consider various scenarios, including the case where all diagonal blocks are allowed to be rank deficient. Under certain conditions related to the nullity of the blocks and intersections of their kernels, an explicit formula for the inverse is derived.

Abstract:In this research paper, structured bi-matrix variate, matrix quadratic equations are considered. Some lemmas related to determining the eigenvalues of unknown matrices are proved. Also, a method of determining the diagonalizabe unknown matrices is provided. The results are generalized to multi-matrix variate, matrix polynomial equations. Briefly generalization to tensor variate polynomial equations is discussed. It is hoped that the results lead to important contributions in "non-commutative algebra".

Abstract:Inverse Vandermonde matrix calculation is a long-standing problem to solve nonsingular linear system $Vc=b$ where the rows of a square matrix $V$ are constructed by progression of the power polynomials. It has many applications in scientific computing including interpolation, super-resolution, and construction of special matrices applied in cryptography. Despite its numerous applications, the matrix is highly ill-conditioned where specialized treatments are considered for approximation such as conversion to Cauchy matrix, spectral decomposition, and algorithmic tailoring of the numerical solutions. In this paper, we propose a generalized algorithm that takes arbitrary pairwise (non-repetitive) sample nodes for solving inverse Vandermonde matrix. This is done in two steps: first, a highly balanced recursive algorithm is introduced with $\mathcal{O}(N)$ complexity to solve the combinatorics summation of the elementary symmetric polynomials; and second, a closed-form solution is tailored for inverse Vandermonde where the matrix' elements utilize this recursive summation for the inverse calculations. The numerical stability and accuracy of the proposed inverse method is analyzed through the spectral decomposition of the Frobenius companion matrix that associates with the corresponding Vandermonde matrix. The results show significant improvement over the state-of-the-art solutions using specific nodes such as $N$th roots of unity defined on the complex plane. A basic application in one dimensional interpolation problem is considered to demonstrate the utility of the proposed method for super-resolved signals.

Abstract:We present necessary and sufficient conditions under which the sum of two group invertible elements in a ring is group invertible. As applications, we establish the existence of group inverses of certain 2 × 2 block-operator matrices over a Banach space. These generalize the known results, e.g., Zhou, Chen and Zhu ( Comm. Algebra 48 (2020), 676–690) and Benítez, Liu and Zhu ( Linear Multilinear Algebra 59 (2011), 279–289).

Abstract:A fast algorithm for calculating the inverse and group inverse and MoorePenrose inverse of a resultant matrix is presented by using the fast algorithm for finding polynomials. Only the rounding error exists when the fast algorithm is realized by computers, and only the entries in the first row of the resultant matrix is used in this algorithm, so the computing results are accurate in theory.

Abstract:The development reported in Part 1 of this series is continued by presenting a unifying theory for rational matrices at infinity. The cornerstone for the development is again the homogeneous form for polynomial and rational matrices. It is shown that when a rational matrix is factorized in matrix fraction description (MFD), redundancy at infinity may be introduced. This redundancy can be characterized precisely as the common divisor of the numerator and the denominator matrices at infinity. Moreover, when the numerator and the denominator matrices are completely coprime, the determinantal degree of the denominator is the McMillan degree of the rational matrix.

Abstract:Tian and Styan have shown many rank equalities for the sum of two and three idempotent matrices and pointed out that rank equalities for the sum P 1 + ⋯ + P k with P 1 , ... , P k be idempotent ( k > 3 ) are still open. In this paper, by using block Gaussian elimination, we obtained rank equalities for the sum of finitely many idempotent matrices and then solved the open problem mentioned above. Extensions to scalar-potent matrices and some related matrices are also included.

Sparse Polynomial Matrix Optimization

Abstract:A polynomial matrix inequality is a statement that a symmetric polynomial matrix is positive semidefinite over a given constraint set. Polynomial matrix optimization concerns minimizing the smallest eigenvalue of a symmetric polynomial matrix subject to a tuple of polynomial matrix inequalities. This work explores the use of sparsity methods in reducing the complexity of sum-of-squares based methods in verifying polynomial matrix inequalities or solving polynomial matrix optimization. In the unconstrained setting, Newton polytopes can be employed to sparsify the monomial basis, resulting in smaller semidefinite programs. In the general setting, we show how to exploit different types of sparsity (term sparsity, correlative sparsity, matrix sparsity) encoded in polynomial matrices to derive sparse semidefinite programming relaxations for polynomial matrix optimization. For term sparsity, one intriguing phenomenon is that the related block structures do not necessarily converge to the one determined by sign symmetries, which is significantly distinguished from the scalar case. For correlative sparsity, unlike the scalar case, we provide a counterexample showing that asymptotic convergence does not hold under the Archimedean condition and the running intersection property. By employing the theory of matrix-valued measures, we establish several results on detecting global optimality and retrieving optimal solutions under correlative sparsity. The effectiveness of sparsity methods on reducing computational complexity is demonstrated on various examples of polynomial matrix optimization.

Abstract:Joint block diagonalization (JBD) of a given Hermitian matrix set $\{A_i\}_{i=0}^p$ is to find a nonsingular matrix $W$ such that $W^H A_i W$ for $i=0,1,\dots, p$ are all block diagonal matrices with the same prescribed block diagonal structure. General JBD (GJBD) attempts to solve JBD without knowing the resulting block diagonal structure in advance, which is more difficult than JBD. In this paper, we reveal that GJBD of $\{A_i\}_{i=0}^p$ is strongly connected with the spectral information of the corresponding matrix polynomial $P(\lambda)=\sum_{i=0}^p\lambda^i A_i$. Under some conditions, the solutions to GJBD are characterized by the spectral information, and a necessary and sufficient condition is given for the existence of nontrivial solutions to GJBD. In addition, based on the established theory, two feasible numerical methods are proposed to solve GJBD.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is threefold. The first is to show the matrix inversion method as a joint basis for the inversion of two important transforms: the M\"obius and Laplace transforms. It is found that the M\"obius transform is related to a multiplicative operator while the Laplace transform is related to an additive operator. The second is to show that the matrix inverison method is a useful tool for inverse problems not only in statistical physics but also in applied physics by means of adding two other applications, one the derivation of the Fuoss-Kirkwood formulas for relaxation spectra in studies of anelasticity and dielectrics and the other the reconstruction of real signal in signal processing. The third is to indicate the potentiality of the matrix inversion method as a rough algorithm for numerical solution of the convolution integral equation. On the complexity of matrix Putinar's Positivstellensatz

Abstract:This paper studies the complexity of matrix Putinar's Positivstellensatz on the semialgebraic set that is given by the polynomial matrix inequality. Under the archimedeanness, we prove a polynomial bound on degrees of terms appearing in the representation of matrix Putinar's Positivstellensatz. Estimates on the exponent and constant are given. As a byproduct, a polynomial bound on the convergence rate of matrix sum-of-squares relaxations is obtained, which resolves an open question raised by Dinh and Pham. When the constraining set is unbounded (the archimedeanness fails), we also prove a similar bound for the matrix version of Putinar--Vasilescu's Positivstellensatz by exploiting homogenization techniques.
